I stopped at a local store last night that has really good prices on canned goods and, as always, time was tight. I got to the right aisle and what I needed was on the the bottom shelf..waaay in the back. No way I could just bend from the waist and reach the cans. My choices were get on the floor or find some nice young and limber stock person to help; I decided to risk the floor. I carefully bent one knee and was able to reach all the way to the back of the shelf and then I STOOD UP. I didn't have to lever myself up using the shelf or the cart; I didn't have to push myself up with my hands and my legs splayed out behind me. It amazing! Maybe not a marathon, but I c…

Any advice from self defense/martial arts/boxing people on training my core to be able to protect my lap band against a gut punch or kick? I work my abs 3 times a week at the weight room with the rest of my lifting program, and still have plenty of insulation around there. I am 10 months out of surgery, and maybe have one fill to go. Not that I am picking fights, or jumping into things. I'd just prefer the knowledge. Being big before surgery meant hits in those areas did not cause any problems. I am avoiding contact sparring and stuff like that as much as possible. Better yet, any defensive techniques to defer or block blows to the area?

I need some help getting motivated. I had a 13 week bedrest period (had stomach skin removal surgery that got infected and had another surgery to remove infection). After surgery they emptied my band to 3cc's. I was at 7cc's at time of 1st surgery. Those 2 surgeries were Sept and Oct 2011. Since, i had gallbladder removal in Apr 2012. i have gained 22lbs since. My band is at 6.8 but don't feel much restriction. I have no motivation since i have not worked out since Sept.....help!

Hi all, I do have a question about my burn calories and calories intake... Ok my question is: I do use an app to track my calories so lets say that I ate 800 cals and then went to the gym and burned 400 so, the program says 400 cals left, do that means that I do have to eat those 400 left???? Excuse my English. Thanks ????

Back story: I started this journey at 216 pounds in July of 2011. Ten months later I am 172.5, (i just had another fill today, 7cc in a 10cc band). I lost the first 38 pounds quickly but have only lost a pound a month since December. I knew i needed another fill, hence today's events, but I also know I need to step up in the exercise department. Here is the dilemma: My port is located right under my sternum. It is sewed to my abdominal muscles and even ten months out, is still a little sore. If I do any exercises that require twisting and bending at the waist, my port area is sore for the next week. I talked to my surgeon about it and he said it is just part of t…

I went to a beginner belly dancing class tonight and it was SO MUCH FUN! Everyone was friendly and non judgmental. It works the abs, thighs, hips and arms! Definitely recommend you guys try it if you get the chance. As a woman who has been heavy her entire life I've never felt especially feminine or "sexy", but the class made me feel good about myself for the first time in a long time. I wouldn't have had the confidence to even go to a belly dance class pre band so this is a NSV for me. Just wanted to share

So I've been pretty scared to try the elliptical. I've heard it referred to several times on here as a "helliptical" LOL. Yesterday though, when I was meeting with my PT, I asked her to show me how to do it, and it was surprisingly easy to work. Of course, I only lasted 3 minutes on it and thought I would die. I can do 2 miles on the treadmill now in under a half hour, but this thing killed me. Today though I made it 5 mins I like to think that if I switch up my cardio machines, it will help me break this stall that I'm in, so I'm adding that now to my work outs. Usually I will do 2 miles on the TM and 2 miles on the rec bike. Now I'll just keep adding more mins …

I normally just do my cardio on the treadmill, but i'm working on mixing it up. When I use the elliptical I notice that my feet go numb! Like, all of my toes are tingly and then numb. They go back to normal once I stop... it's very odd. Has anyone else experienced this or understand what's happening? Thanks!

Ok so I work out for the most part 5 days a week and sometimes twice a day! I've gone from 225 to 142 and have had a baby in between that! I've heard that doing 10 reps of 100 jumping (1000 total) jacks in a week will make you lose 1 pound a week ( of course with a good diet and such) I just wanted to see if any of you all have tried or heard of this! I guess it's worth a shot I did my first rep tonight!! Thanks!

Anyone use these types of work outs with success? I keep in mind, we are "special"- we consume 900-1200 calories a day, and perhaps we shouldnt be getting too "hard core"? Or is it a good idea to hit the work outs hard to burn stored fat? I'm personally at the 7 month mark, so I'm essentially "healed" and my energy is level. I work out with trainers now who are aware of my surgery and take it fairly hard (for me), we box and do a lot of heavy weights

Hi guys.. I'm a year out of surgery... lost all the weight I'm going to lose and need to lose and have been maintaining very well. I obviously didn't get the Protein in I needed too, or something because I lost a ton of muscle, especially in my upper body... I'm not weak, but I'm not near as strong as I was 110lbs ago.. My arms are the worst... I need to start adding some lean muscle (don't want to get big) - I've got some protein shots, to give me an added boost and to give me some extra protein... but I had some questions like -- when is the best time to take the protein? I've heard it's best to take 30-45 minutes before a workout.. I need to build up mus…

So I recently bought myself a professional grade spin bike. Put it in my living room so I can't ignore it Questions : How long do ur work outs last? Do you recommend ne videos? Or do u just go on ur own? Do u think I should go to a class for hints olr just web search? The gym I belong to doesn't have spin bikes, only recumbent ones, & doesn't have classes. This is why I purchased my own. I belong to anytime fitness. The local YMCA does have spin classes & I've thought about going to one if I can get in, members get priority. I'm looking forward to this new form of exercise I'm currently unable to do much right now bc I habe 11 sutures in my armpit. I h…

For us folks just starting out on an exercise regimen, there is a nasty little surprise: Weight stall or gain. It's all over the internet. I've been on 3 very strenuous hikes and they have caused me to gain a couple pounds immediately after. I know I'm healthier, but it's disconcerting. I have been reading fitness articles like this one and the articles on the right hand side of the article below. They are all about weight gain and exercise: http://www.livestrong.com/article/378472-why-am-i-gaining-weight-with-exercise/ Now they make a very good point. We should be all about fat-loss as opposed to weight-loss. They also say in some of the other articles that the hi…

I just got the Zumba for Wii and did two of the 20 minute classes. I am in pretty decent shape so I think I gave it a mid intensity effort if the levels are low, mid, high. I went to log it on my fitness pal and there is no recognition of zumba in the program. I created a new exercise and Googled a zumba calculator. The one I went to calculated that at 175 pounds doing 40 minutes of zumba at low intensity burns 361 calories and at mid burns 417 calories. I just took the average and put 389 as my calories burned. I guess my question is: does that seem right? I did work up a sweat and was pretty well spent when finished but that seems like a lot of calories, especial…

Okay, so I've always heard that the elliptical is supposed to be better than a treadmill for being lower impact. So why is it that I can run (okay... jog...) just fine on the treadmill but literally feel like I'm going to die after two minutes on the elliptical? I tore up my knee when I was younger so I figured it would be better, but after not even a lap I feel like I ran a marathon! I know that probably means I'm getting a better workout, but I'd rather not be the still-fat girl huffing and puffing after only two minutes on the dang thing! Lol. Some people on here swear by the elliptical and can go for 30-45 minutes without stopping, or even 15-20 minutes for some peopl…

If you plan to do something strenuous like say ... hike up a mountain, make sure you get enough carbohydrates and stay hydrated. I got the worse case of muscle fatigue and cramping. I was literally in pain and couldn't move well. All I had for the day was a bit of refried Beans and some cheese, On a very low carb diet, your muscles do not have the glycogen stores to be able to sustain such activity. DUH! I went out and got some Soup and ice cream. Not shivering anymore. All better. At the counter was some apple juice. I don't drink sugar Water anymore, but was craving it like you wouldn't believe. My muscles basically needed easy to covert straight sugar. The extra fat…

Hey everyone So I chose to follow a low-carb diet while I'm in "losing mode". It was what my surgeon and his team expected and it seems to work well for me, as the weeks that I am "high-er" carbs I don't lose as well. I have recently decided to up my exercise though, and I am not sure how to adapt my diet to accommodate the extra fitness. Everywhere online says carbs, carbs, carbs. Is there a way to eat properly while exercising (or before/after) that won't completely blow my diet? I have nothing against carbs, but I still struggle to get my Protein in so I really don't want to use up any space with food that is lacking in protein. I wanted to follow the low-carb unt…

I'm a slow loser which I am fine with. I lose about a pound a week. I started Power 90 with Tony Horton about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago and while I feel good I have stopped losing weight. I'm hopeful that this is short lived. I'm working out 5 days a week alternating between strength and cardio. I can tell that I am already toning up but frustrated. Anybody else have this happen? When did the scale finally start moving again : (.

I have been doing couch to 5K and I LOVE it! I haven't run in almost 30 years and now with over 100 pounds lost I gained the courage to try running. So yesterday was a gorgeous day, blue skies, slight breeze...put my ear buds in my ears...."How you like me now" playing on my ipod and when the app says "start running" I take about 4 steps and BAM!! my achilles tendon starts to kill...I pull up lame like a race horse. It was so painful. Now, according to my trainer, I am off the track for at least a week and can only weight train. I am so frustrated. I really want to run. Wow...did I just type that???!!! Gotta love the sleeve! I went from 331 pounds to"I really w…

At the suggestion of a friend who heard my rant about crappy gyms full of mirrors where you go and zone out on treadmills and move a few weights, he recommended I look into CrossFit. This week I joined and really enjoyed the workouts, the varied activities, and the people. No mirrors... just people at different levels of experience working on the same goal... to be the most fit they can be in every area possible. I ran and didn't run out of breath. I did pullups and pushups for the first time EVER. I learned how to jumprope at the age of 27. I am very excited for this journey and the friends I will make here. Its not for everyone but is great for those who want a …

Heartbreaking story this morning on the Today Show about David Smith. 3 years ago he was all over the TV because of losing over 400 pounds. This morning on the Today show he revealed weight re-gain of over 300 pounds. So sad and scary. He talks about needing to have an strong emotional and mental foundation to sustain weight loss and how he was not able to cope with the extreme changes he went through. We can all relate to that. Thank God we have a tool in place to help us be successful. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/

Hello everyone. Right now, I am not walking, due to staples inmy stomach from being sleeved last Monday. My goal is to do the Disney Half Marathon next January. Since June, I have been walking, but sciactica has kicked my butt after 1-3 miles. So I am hoping that will go away and I can do the marathon walking. Is there a group of marathoners for WLS people? Is there a blog or website for training for the marathon? Is there a certain shoe for bigger men that you suggest? Thanks for any help.
