Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

Has anyone seen or visited nerdfitness.com? I found it last week and it's a great website! It's very inspiring and focuses on the Paleo diet (back to basics, all natural, organic meats, fruits, veggies, nuts, etc) and strength training! This guy is really motivating and inspiring! I highly suggest you check it out. I plan on looking into strength training today at my gym! I never really thought about doing it until I did some research and seems like the best way to lose weight and keep strong muscles! I'm hoping it will help tone up my flab before it gets too bad! I'll update everyone on what I find out at my gym!

OK, I know I have mentioned I am not losing the weight like I'd like to, but for some reason my clothes are much looser and it appears I am losing inches. Don't get me wrong I like where the inches seem to be coming off from but is it possible that's what's happening? My body is playing tricks on me. I can truly see the hour glass, yippee!!!!! Does that seem to be the case with anyone else?

  6. Hello everyone! I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a migraine headache after a tough work out? I've noticed the last two weeks have been tough on me. It started after I began taking harder classes like Boot camp, Body pump and Step. I've made sure I had enough Protein before the gym and I do well with my Water but I can always up the amount. Other than that I'm not sure what else I can do other than dropping the amount of classes I take a week but I really don't want to do that. I've always been prone to migraines but this is just getting ridiculous!! Any suggestions? Any advise would help. Thanks

Why is it sometimes you can get on the treadmill and barely break a sweat and other times you get on it and you need paramedics with a defibrillator standing by??? Just an observation!!! Have a great day everyone!!

I have a pretty aggressive exercise routine and realize after my surgery I will not be able to do things right away. I am addicted to Zumba, which if you do it correctly really uses your stomach muscles. Does anyone else do it regularly and when can you get back to it. I also take step, which is not all stomach, but is alot of jumping around and moving quickly. That is what I am concerned about. Anyone else have an aggressive exercise routine in place before surgery?

WARNING, BRAGGING AHEAD So last week was a week of vacation. I goofed off, did SOME walking but skipped my usual swims. So Monday I returned to the pool, swam 120 laps (1.8 miles) in an hour, went home got the bicycle out and went out on a short 5 mile bike ride. Would of gone 10 but the sun was setting and I was getting cool. Came home and finished by 4th set of 20 bicep curls and back of the head lifts for the day. I do them at each meal and before bed. Today I'm a tad sore, not too bad, just a little bit. Gee, I wonder why? After 1 year 4 months out I have TOTALLY reinvented myself. A workout less than HALF that intense a little over a year ago and I would o…

  12. I'm officially 9 days post-op right now. As of today, I feel like I'm back to 100%. All of the internal pulling and tugging I felt is gone, no pain with bending or stretching, etc. YAY! Anyway, my surgeon said that I should wait until three weeks out to start at the gym. I'm assuming that includes C25K. How far out were you guys when you started? I was kind of hoping to start Monday, but that would put me at 2 weeks. Also, week 1 of C25K wouldn't be a HUGE strain on my body as I've always been very active prior to surgery (thanks to my retriever pup). Not sure if that makes a difference. If you don't know what this is, you can find lots of info on runforyourlife.com. It is a zombie infested 5k where you run for your life. My husband and I have NEVER been interested in something like a 5k before, but we signed up for the one coming to Austin in December. It looks like so much fun!!

  14. Started by XS-2011,

Hello Sleevers, I finally decided to go to the gym for the first time in my life. I am still nervous and dread walking in there, but I need to continue with my weight loss. Long story short, I was sleeved 10/10 and lost 70 pounds without exercising at all (I am not proud of admitting to that). I started eating bad again and gained 7-10 pounds since June 2011. I just completed the 5 day pouch test and started the Leslie Sansome "Walk away the pounds" 1 mile. My 10 week body sculpt start Monday April 9. Wish me luck, Xs-2011

So, I remember always reading about and hearing from gastric bypass patients rejoicing about how much energy they have after WLS. Is the energy just as noticeable with VSG?

  16. Hello, Spring, Summer and late Fall I am actively riding my horse (trail riding, some trotting and loping, some cattle work--but mostly trail), but I am wondering those of you that ride how soon your were able to ride, how many hours and saddle lifting, etc...your overall experience. I am not sure how I am going to get away without riding with friends for a month or more (ONLY my husband knows)...but I can blame it on other activities going on for maybe several weeks. Anyhow, please share your experience. Thanks.

  17. I've run into some family stuff (trying to help my parents get ready to move after pack-ratting in their home for 35 years- this is a HUGE HUGE HUGE job), and I haven't been able to get out for ANY runs in the last week!!! I can't see any runs coming up either....... I have a 10k race in a week and a half. Am I doomed??? on a side note, I jammed my shoulder the other day. How much impact do you figure it'll have on my running (if any)?

I had a bad month in March, I guess I was too comfortable. I gained 1.5 lbs. I know I ate all the wrong things, and didn't exercise enough. I'm almost 6 mos out from surgery and my weight loss is 49 ( I think ). I was so happy in my March weigh in for losing 10, now I gained 1.5 back. I am having a hard time getting motivated and making myself go walk. Has anyone else experienced this? I am no where near done with my weight loss. Not even half way to my goal. Any feedback is welcome! Thank you!

Hey Banders, I am so happy to be able to share in your success stories and share my own. This morning I climbed a small mountain near my home in Australia. It took my 25 minutes and I had to stop 6 times for a minute to catch my breath. This is a massive improvement from the last time I climbed Mt Coolum in August 2011; it took 45 minutes and I had to stop 20-25 times. I am so excited to be getting my fitness back and being able to partake in difficult yet fun exercises. Looking forward to getting to the 15 minute climb. Goodluck with your journeys. Cheers, Simone

I hate my arms. I feel like no matter how much weight I lose the stretch marks and sagging that I have on the inside of my arms, will never go away. I know there's so answer for stretch marks, but is there anyone who felt that same way but now feels different? If so, what exercises did you do? Do you think water intake really does make a difference? Thanks!

I have been running since 2009 - ran many, many, many 5K's. Last year I ran 2 half marathons. In October 2011 I had to have a revision to my lap band. So I did stop running after that, probably for 4 weeks? I started back slowly and was doing well again until just recently, probably since Jan/Feb. I barely can run for a min! I get so winded, it's very strange! I wasn't this winded when I first started running. I've tried everything to get back into it. I slowed my pace, decided to try the C25K again, but nothing is working! Has this happened to anyone else? I am supposed to do another half in May (yes..next month) and won't be able to run, but plan on doing it, ev…

Hey everyone, I know most of us have been told to do high Protein, low carbs but I have been doing research and I am finding info saying that a post workout recovery drink or meal should have a ratio of 2:1 carbs:protein to preserve and repair muscles. What do you all use as a recovery drink or meal after an intense workout? I am torn on what the heck I should use as I usually do high protein, low to moderate carbs. I need some tips on some exercise activities to start with. I am 4 weeks out of surgery and I havent really started a routine. The muscle that the port is sewed into just barely stopped hurting when i walk. My main focus has just been to move more throughout the day but now I need to get a routine started. I am hoping some of you have ideas of some moderate activities that I could do at home to get into the grove. So excited that I am starting to get to the point where it is ok to start to focus on loss and not just on healing.

  29. I am going to freely confess that I have always hated exercise. It am shocked and amazed to hear so many previously overweight couch potatoes are now seemingly fitness fanatics. i know I sound stupid but I just don't get it. I can stick to eating as per guidelines but I seem to be a hold out a rebel when it comes to getting myself to exercise. I know NIKE says Just DO It, but I can't seem to get myself to do it! It must seem foolish to ask advice because clearly all of you have Just Done It. I can't even ask for advice because I know the answer is that I must find a way to exercise. I just don't understand how others have found a way to embrace exercise? It tru…

  31. Hey everyone Recently I started to up my exercise. I don't have access to a gym so I've been doing yoga (the free videos on cable) and basic at home workouts (like push-ups, crunches, etc). I also walk a lot and my plan was this week or next week (weather dependent) to start jogging at the park near here. I always stretch very well and I'm careful not to over-do it or push myself too hard. I know sore muscles are to be expected, but mine are incredibly sore. Keeping me up at night even with advil sore and lasting for days type of sore. I've tried hot showers, gentle stretching, just giving it time, taking a break from the exercise. Could the reason its this bad be …

  32. *Pulling my hair out*. Yesterday I went to my first personal trainer evaluation. Of course, I was quickly judged on my choice to have surgery. The trainer quickly told me that without training I would gain all my weight back within four months and have to start over. He also told me that no piece of equipment in the gym would help me if I picked to do this on my own. He would help my husband and I for $1000 PER MONTH !!!!! What a whackdoodle!!!! I am down 75lbs with less than 30 until goal. I feel discouraged and angry! I need to tone my arms and stomach but was looking for some help (apparently with the wrong person!). 33. Hi everyone, I have been playing soccer 2 times a week. One is 60 minutes, other is 90 minutes. I have asthma, but its not bad and I would not say my asthma is not contributing to my lack of energy. I am finding that about 30 minutes in I am dead, pretty much can't do much running, can't keep up and feel so tired. Right now I intake about 800 calories, 70-90 g Protein. Could it be that I need to start intaking more calories or carbs or something? I am not in maintenance yet and still have like 20-30lbs to lose. Thanks for any help.

  34. Hey y'all, I just thought I'd share a great website I was introduced to by a very lovely lady here. It's purpose is to motivate those who love to workout, like myself, to really challenge themselves and each other. It's based on a point system, and I admit it's pretty interesting and fun!!! It used to be closed and only eligible by invitation only, but I believe as of a few days ago it has been opened to the public. Have fun spending those calories!!! http://www.fitocracy.com/home/

  36. I am 15 weeks out and had a follow-up today with my awesome doctor. I told him I thought i was losing too slowly. He said I wasn't. I told him i was doing my treadmill 30 min. a day and the days I didn't do that. I walked. He said to try this to get the body fat to melt off before I see him again: Get on the treadmill at 2 mph. for 1 minute. Then increase to 3 mph. for 5 min. Then increase to 4 mph. for 1 min. Then repeat 6 more times for a total of 35 min. He said this would work with no incline, but if you want to try an incline, it will work even better. He said when he sees me in a month, I should be down at least 10 or more lbs. if I do this at least 5 day…

Does anybody have any tips/suggestions on what I can do for exercising with an artificial knee? Currently I am: 1. Walking on a treadmill 2. Using the eliptical 3. Riding a recumbent bike 4. Swimming Because of the the artificial knee I cannot do squats, lunges or things like that. I also cannot do any weight lifting which would put extra pressure on that joint. I feel pretty good about far I have come since my surgery, but I want to make sure and reach my goal so any help/suggestions that I can get is all the better. Thanks in advance!

Hi folks! Today is my 1-month surgiversary/sleeviversary/whatever, and I've decided to start the Couch to 5K program this week. I've just registered for a 5K on April 29th, so that gives me 13 weeks to get ready. (The program is set up for 9 weeks, but I'm giving myself a few weeks' cushion so I can start off slowly.) Does anyone out there want to do the program with me? The schedule is outlined here: http://www.coolrunni...2/2_3/181.shtml There are podcasts and additional resources here: http://www.c25k.com/ I just got the iPhone app, which was $2.99. Yes, I bought a new bike that I can comfortably ride. I am so proud that my weight loss has allowed me to engage in a activity I use to throughly enjoy. When I was at my highest weight I couldnt comfortably ride a bike and was embarassed by my weight. Friday I was one month post op and decided I needed to start exercising. Having heel spurs causes me great difficulty walking. However, I was advised that with continual weight loss this will improve. Last nite I rode for 20 mins and have no soreness today. I know bicycling will require me to at least ride an hour before I begin burning calories. I am just so excited I can enjoy riding again and with my 11 yr old son.
