Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by gmanbat,

I'm about a month and a half out of surgery. I went through a week of flu and a cold for another week in that time so my exersize has been sub-standard.I tried some push ups today, 2 only and on my knees! I also could only squeak out 12 knee bends. I haven't been this weak in distant memory. I am concluding that I have lost muscle tissue in my weight reduction, a substantial amount. Having been treated with testosterone-killing Lupron during my fight with prostate cancer in 2009-2010 I may be dealing with the residual effect of that, too. Also, I am 63. I am confident that I can overcome this and get my muscles back with proper diet and diligent strength training. A…

  2. Started by Rootman,

How may of you success storied sleevers catch yourself preening in front of the mirror now? I came out of the shower - same shower I've been in thousands of times over the last 15 years, caught sight of myself in the full length closet door mirror and started making muscle man poses and running my hands over the FLAT tummy of mine. Yep, there is a little pucker below my tummy, a tiny little bat wing under the arms but I look better now then I did in my 20's! Sorry, had to brag!

  3. Started by Monique Salmond,

So i have these 2 workout videos and was wondering if I could possibly hurt myself or appliances if I did workouts like this. I was in the service so I know I am capable of doing it but afraid of making something break or burst. Has anyone attempted these workout videos? Anyone in the 90602 in California who would be willing to join me for some kick ass workouts in home or at 24 hour fitness?!

  4. Started by Cheles,

I go to the gym at least 3-4 times a week to workout on cardio and strength. What I've noticed is it's difficult for me to drink water while I'm working out. Is this normal? And if so, when should I be able to get fuilds back in me?

  5. Started by Pam2011,

I have been on an stationery exercise bike at my physical therapy appointments the last two times now and my bad knee has tolerated the exercise. I am thinking of buying an exercise bike for home. I don't want to spend a ton of money on it and was wondering if any of you have any suggestions? I have been looking on CraigsList and the local paper for used ones but so far no luck. I looked online at WalMart and Target and they have a couple under or around $150. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  6. I'm getting sleeved 4 weeks from today. My doctor doesn't have a specific pre-op diet (other than 3 days clear liquids pre-op), but has advised to eat less, no fried foods, etc. and keep exercising. I'm a morning exerciser and got back into my routine this past Monday (Wii fit Biggest Loser game). Yesterday I was STARVING all day! So starving that after work I went to McDonalds because I needed something to hold me on my commute home. I ate a whole value meal, and then 3 hours later was starving again. I like working out, but hate the fact that it makes me hungry. Will this change after I'm sleeved?

  7. Started by reallyrosy,

I went to have m6y shoulders evaluated and I'm really weak so the therapist prescribed some exercises. How do I log pulling bands and doing the handbike on My fitness pal? Anyone have an6 ideas? Tomorrow I get my foot evaluated to see why that's weak. Sent from my SGH-T839 using VST

So I found this workout on YouTube. It's called Tiffany rothe workouts. It is fun and I feel good doing it. However, I did it yesterday and now my back muscles are killing me. Is it normal to feel like this? I was running a mile a day four days a week and weights 2 days a week. What is more important? Cardio, weights, or aerobics? Or something else? Any info would help.

Hi everyone! I was just wondering, on average, about how long it takes after surgery to get back, full strength, to the gym? I really enjoy working out at the gym instead of just the usual walking but if that is what needs to be done for quite a while, then I can deal with it.... I have a treadmill at home and enjoy walking oustide, but just trying to get an idea when I'll be able to get back in the gym? Thanks for any responses.. Randy

  11. Started by Kris,

Let me tell you about the video that is helping me have an awesome pulse rate (51 -- woot?!). My girl Jillian Michaels of Biggest Loser fame has a bunch of fitness workout DVDs out, but this is the first one of hers I've ever purchased or used (note: the title of the DVD is actually Ripped in 30, not 30 Day Shred). I picked it up at costco in early January for the low low price of $7.99 or something like that. I have definitely gotten my money's worth from the video, as I've used it at least 15 times the past couple of months. So, now that I've gotten through all the workouts, I thought I would tell you about it. The DVD contains a 4-week workout program with a …

I have a treadmill at home and I also walk along the beach traiil as much as possible, but I really need to tone up my upper arms. I have two friends who go to Curves, and they swear by it. Both of my doctors say that Curves is a waste of money and not beneficial. Do any of you go to Curves and what is your feeling about getting results from there? It is hard for me to believe that from what I hear about the workouts, you can get any results at just 1/2 hour a day on all the machines, but I can't really say since I have never seen it in action. I met a bunch of ladies yesterday at a Bunco party who all go to Curves, and they didn't especially look trim. (Although it…

I am considering buying a fitbit. Because it's a 100 dollars, I wanted to get some opinions on it. Does anyone on here have one? If so, what is your experience with it? Has it helped with your fitness goals? I know there is also the bodybug, but I would rather have the fitbit because it connects with myfitnesspal and I am an avid user of that app. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Anyone else do Jazzercise for their workouts? I've been doing it for over a year now and I LOVE IT! By the way, it's kinda sad how this forum doesn't have more posts. Exercise is the secret for me to be successful in maintenance.

YEY! Those of you who know me, know that I've been threatening to go swimming for a few weeks now... I kept putting it off and putting it off, you know that 'fat girl syndrome'... I didn't want to be seen in public in my costume etc! Well long story short, I bought a new costume... one that fitted me... and after some lovely people on here encouraged and cheered me on, I've done it. I have had a really stressful couple of weeks and I needed to do 'something' to get my mind off the stress... I have to say that swimming did the trick! It wasn't easy to get there... I was a little anxious at first, but when I got to the pool it was all 'ok'. I did a few lengths and j…

  20. Just curious what others have come up with as far as exercise with your spouse or partner? We need to find something to do together on date nights other than go out to eat. But, my husband isn't that into most exercise. We have bikes, so we can go biking. We regularly (several times a week) walk a couple of miles around our neighborhood. I think we should go to one of the indoor ice rinks one of these days. What are some other good date nights that involve moving about and not just eating?

  21. Started by sleeve 4 me,

OK So I've heard different methods...my trainer said to do weights first then do cardio. My hubby does weights first then cardio??? Thoughts on this?? Also he said I need to eat 216 grams of Protein a day, SAY WHAT??? I think it's 1.5 grams per my weight (144)...there's no way! Does this sound right to you? Anyhoo, appreciate any feedback. Thanks!!!!!!!!

For a male my age, 63, height, 6"2", and body type, big boned my ideal weight according to the calculators of health experts, ( http://www.calculato...r=180&x=78&y=12 my ideal weight is between 167 and 194 pounds. I am now 271 and my goal is 220. I haven't been 194 since I was 18 and I was probably about 13 when I was 167, sickly, and just had my appendix out. I ran into an old friend last night and she was very happy about my losing 60 pounds but when I told her I had 50 pounds more to go she freaked out. She thinks I've gone nuts with this, that I don't need to lose that much. That would just get me down to 220, if I went by the calculator I could lose anothe…

1st yoga class tonight and Ihope that I don’t look like a total fool. This has been a goal of mine for years and now that I have less weight and my joints don’t hurt I thought I’d try it. That being said, I am fearful of being the big woman in the class and the looks and whatnots, I guess I’ll just have to get over it. Thanks for letting me vent. I love this group!

Hi! I never really been a "walker" because I get really bad shin splints. My shins get hard as bricks, they get really warm and red when I walk and they hurt like heck. I've tried different types of sneakers, I have to stop and stretch while walking several times and as you can imagine it is a pain to have to do this and I'm not getting the best benefit from walking. I have an elliptical and use that but walking is a social activity for me and I would like to join in with walking groups. Does anyone have any experience with shin splints?

Hey all, I don't know if anyone else experiences this but most days after I work out I get a headache. It's really only at the front of my head and it's not unbearable, just weird. My trainer says it might be that I'm dehydrated but I drink water throughout. Anyone else have this issue?

It'll be a year in February since I have gotten my band. Though I have lost weight, I seem to be standing at a still point in my progress. I can't seem to lose anymore weight than what I already have. I've lost about 50 pounds from last year. I don't ever gain my weight back but now the progress seems to be even slower than when I first started. I did have some issues with my band being way to tight so I know that had a lot to do with it. I'm recently in school and can only come back once in awhile to get my band readjusted. I used to come in every month, but like I said, I go to school and am not in the same state as I was when I got my band. So my last visit consisted o…

I had kind of hit a wall with losing weight. I was doing great right after my surgery, then I became unexpectedy pregnant. As you can imagine, this pushed losing weight off the table. I got fills after my daughter was born, but found that I had lost some of my momentum. I found a free app for the iPhone called "MyFitnessPal" (it's also a website!) It helps me track what I'm eating so I can get a better idea and make the band work for me! It also lets you input your workouts. It's very satisfying to fill it out every day and know I'm on the right path. After using this app, my weight started moving in the right direction again!! Just though I'd share, in case a…

I find that I can tear it up on the elliptical for 30 minutes but jog about 3 minutes (out of every 5 minutes) on a treadmill (at 4.50)...why is that? My hubby saw me this weekend working out and said if I can do what I did on the elliptical I should be able to do the same thing on the treadmill...do you think this is right??? I find the elliptical much easier...I wonder if it's just all in my mind??? Thoughts???

Hey yall. So my underarms are icky and flabby. I work out everyday and do pilates 3 days a week and can see that the fat is visibly being lost in them but they still have that not attractive left over skin. How can I make that skin tighten up and be more attractive? My mom offered to get me surgery (she is the best) but I want to try everything else first. Its almost bathing suit season and tank season so I wanna be not embarrassed by them anymore. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I need to buy a new scale. I think... So according to my scale, I've only lost 7lbs since surgery. According to my doctor's scale, I've lost 11. WTH?! I weighed myself, right out of the shower at about 7am the morning of my surgery, 250 flat. I weighed myself same way, same time of day yesterday, 243. Yet the morning of surgery at the hospital (about 2 hours after I weighed myself), I was 251 with a big heavy hospital gown. then at my doc's office yesterday, 240. He says his scales are better, being $300+ dollars. But now I don't know if I'll be able to accurately guage my progress with mine. He wants me to lose 10+ more in 2 weeks, but I'm afriad if I go my scale I w…

I am 25 months out from my banding. I am down 65# but need to pursue dropping the remaining 30# suggested on the BMI Charts. My exercise has been sporadic at best. I have a positive gift for hurting myself and having to recover. At first with my initial weight drop everything was so loose in my joints that I literally could hurt myself walking. It was so embarrassing. I got invited to participate on a CoEd Adult Softball team! Wow! I have not participated in team sports in 20 years. So I am excited, cautious, and nervous. I know I can only do my best. The team is a great mix of people doing this to 'move unnecessarily' or 'exercise'. I have the gloves and the first pra…

  39. I've found this treasure when I was a teenager some 20+ years ago. My ex-Stepmother had a copy of this book and I took it an read it. Suffice to say I never returned it... LOL :-) I still do have it to this day. It is by FAR the best workout book I have ever (well I can't say bought... haha) came across. I have been getting many requests for tips on how I'm being able to keep my shape the way I am. I'd say there are several factors to this. Firstly, eating low carb... it does help with belly flab!! Believe that. Low carb eaters have much flatter tummies than those who do not. Second, my running really is helping sculpt a very lean body structure. I can't …

Okay, I have unfortunately had an apron now for awhile. Since I have lost the weight it has become smaller, but also a bit baggier, and it claps. How do the runners deal with this? Guys I just don't think I can run with my belly slap-clapping along. It also creates discomfort after a little bit.

It was easier than I thought it would be. I haven't jogged in years (not since I was over 200 lbs.) and even though I'm teetering on the edge of 200 right now it was not bad at all. I love the podcasts. The music is pretty good and the verbal cues sure beat watching a timer or stopwatch. I plan run a 5K in April.

Ok I'm just one day post three weeks post op (1/25} and at two weeks was given the clearance to work out and swim, just no weight lifting yet. I swam at least ten miles since Monday and walked more. Now I'm in pain and gained 4 pounds. I rarely eat even 400 calories so it can't be fat can it? I'm up 4 to flat for over a week. I literally cried yesterday. So frustrated and sad.

I know for some this is not a big deal but I have not been able to walk an uninterrupted mile in about 8 years. Then to boot I was not to sore in the morning I could actually get out of bed!

Hi! Any fellow horseback riders out there? How long after surgery did you wait to start riding again? I asked my surgeon the day I was discharged when I could get back in the saddle. He got this really horrified look on his face (doctors always get this look when you mention riding horses) and said that we could "discuss it" at my 4-week post-op followup. I guess I can wait that long, but I'm really starting to hit withdrawal! BTW: When I say riding, I don't mean "just sitting there", I mean getting back to work with my trainer schooling dressage and jumping. Also, is it realisitic to expect to do my first 25mile limited distance endurance race later this summer (…
