POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. After reading a few posts about Gerd I'm getting nervous about the sleeve vs bypass. I'd like honest answers regarding the sleeve and Gerd . I've had at different times in my life and it's been controlled by diet . Surgery in two weeks!

I am a week post op and most days this week I have felt good about the decision despite pain, discomfort and some head hunger. Today, anxiety smacked me in the face and I thought, what the **** did I just do?? I honestly know this is a great decision, and I am recovering well, but I can't help today to just be freaked out about just having most of a healthy major organ cut out of my body. Anyone else? Words of wisdom?

I have my sleeve surgery on 1/25 and I've been healing as expected. However, this past Friday I started getting this stabbing, burning pain in my right side somewhat under my rib cage. It's becoming constant and not being relieved with Tylenol. Is this normal?

I'm 2 months out from my RNY and my life resolves around my surgery. I'm sure a large part of that is because I stay at home all day, mostly to myself. I was the same pre-op, so this isn't exactly new. I just feel like the same distractions that helped me get through my days before (social media, Netflix, writing, Pinterest, etc.) don't give me the same kind of satisfaction right now. I do like spending time with my mom and my sister and I try to make that time with them as normal as possible. I'll eat, take my meds, etc. when I need to but other than that I try to keep my mind off my surgery and just try enjoying their company like always. I joke that I feel like a rob…

I know I'm dumping, but I can't drink anything. I throw it right back up. If I can't get fluids in, should I go to ER for IV fluids? It's been hours and I can't drink. I am having diarrhea too, I know I'm dehydrated. If I should go, when? What do I tell them?

Hey, I need you guys advice. I am almost 3 months post op. All was great until this week when all of a sudden I have an extreme lack of energy. I normally workout 6 days a week for a 20-30 mins alternating between cardio and strength. I get 70-90 grams of protein. I take my supplements in patch form ( multi, vitamin D, biotin, iron) and pills omega-3, vitamin B-50, probiotics. I just don't know what is wrong with me. I am still losing weight I believe but I can't seem to finish a workout to save my life. I can barely walk up a flight of stairs.

  22. Hello All, I have the date for my gastric bypass surgery on March 22, 2017. Still waiting though to hear from insurance, but that's why it was a good idea that the pre-approval documents were sent out in advance. I'm a little over a week post-op (sleeve) and I'm finding that in general I'm not that hungry. Yay, right? This is one of the changes I was really hoping for, that with the removal of stomach tissue and the ghrelin it produces that ever present voice of hunger would quiet down. So now that I'm experiencing it I'm wondering if it will last. So those of you who are several months or more out, did your appetite comeback? When? And by how much?

  27. Hello, I had my surgery on the 18th of January. I have been hospitalized twice due to bowel obstruction. One of the main symptoms I experienced was some really really foul smelling burps and vomit. Literally, they smelled like feces. After my first bowel obstruction was cleared, I was good for about 2 days. Then the foul burps came back, along with the vomit. I went back to the hospital for the second time, another obstruction was cleared. I went in on the 10th of February for the second clearance. The burps aren't that bad but you can faintly still smell the "feces" can this mean that I have another obstruction or can it mean that my tummy still has some residue of that…

I know I have read several people have stalls in the beginning so I somewhat expected it but it's not fun! I weigh myself every morning in hopes that the number went down even just a couple ounces. I had my sleeve Jan 31 I lost 10lb pre op and 9.6 lb the first week post op. The 2nd week I lost 2 more lbs the first day and now 5 days at the same exact weight. I'm trying not to get discouraged though! All this excess weight didn't come on overnight so i shouldn't expect it to all come off overnight.

So, I woke up pretty hungry this morning and decided I wanted something different than my normal scrambled egg. I made a toasted fiber one English muffin, one scrambled egg and one slice of low fat cheese. I made a breakfast sandwich out of it. I cut it in half and planned on eating a half. Well, I ate the whole thing. I could have stoped at half but it was delicious and I ate the rest. I am super full now. I don't feel sick, but I am very full. Could I h e stretched my sleeve? I am normally so good at measuring things out and I feel like I screwed up!

Is that normal ? Am I abnormal? Wasn't this surgery supposed to take away your hunger? Please share your experiences.

Hello beautiful people! Like many sleevers I developed heartburn after surgery. I was taking OTC generics (same as Prilosec) which did a great job of controlling it, but because of my family history of neurological issues I asked my nut about other options; she suggested trying enteric peppermint oil. I've been taking it for a few days with promising results. It certainly doesn't last 24 hours but if I take it about 30 mins before I eat, it controls it. The one I take also has fennel in it and is marketed for people with IBS, which I don't have. Just wanted to throw that out for anyone seeking to conquer post op GERD.
