POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by mmello2@me.com,

I am 4 days post op and I am in no way getting my fluids in. Even the smallest sip seems to get stuck in my esophagus then makes me gag. Should I call my surgeon ?

  2. So before I even knew I wanted the surgery, I took vitamins. They made me feel great. But I had to stop them a week prior to my surgery, and it's taking a toll. My throat is sore and feels swollen, the pressure im my head is ridiculous. I'm drinking copious amounts of water to try to counter act but I feel just awful, when just a few days ago I was on top of the world! My immune system has completely seemed to stop working. I have no fever as of right now, but it's Sunday and my surgery is Wednesday! Did anyone else experience this?! Does it stop? Will I feel better? Any medicine I can take while I'm doing this liver shrinking diet? Sent from my iPhone using the Bariatric…

Hey everyone thanks for taking time to read this, i just got operated for vsg single incision on jan 26, so im pretty much 2 weeks post op. Anyway my concern is i started having this clear/brown liquid coming out of my bellybotton (also thats where the incision is located) is this normal? I just saw my doctor this morning for a followup and he said everything seemed okay, now im a bit worried because theres alot i had to do today (chanhe my sons diapers, cook etc) maybe i over did it? If you have experienced this, any advice?

Hi Everyone! So I go to see my surgeon on Valentine's Day for my release to transition to regular food. Have two questions: 1. What advice do you have for transitioning? Please feel free to share any specific experiences that may help me. 2. When did you stomach begin to feel normal where you could eat just about anything with no issues? I'm not trying to eat everything jut want to know when stomach will "settle" so to speak. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  7. Hello, I had surgery 12/27/2016, by 2 week appointment I lost 10 lbs, It has been one month since that and lost 2 lbs. Everyone tells me that you can tell but really only 2 lbs gone. They say don't count calories but i do, I get anywhere from 450-650 in a day. 63-85 protein. I get my water in just fine. I have issues with one leg so I can only do walking 20 min at a time. I have been getting all my vitamins in. Anyone have a tips or ideas to help? I feel like my scale will not move don't matter what I try.

I am at gw (actually below it but haven't updated stats). I went from size 20 to size 8. Prior to wls I had my gb removed and had a true emergency c-section with vertical incision, so my abdomen is definitely scarred. It's also flabbier than I would like, which I'm working on... At my 6 month visit my surgeon asked if I would have a tummy tuck. He told me I'd be a size or two smaller and overall have a nicer (less flab) shape. Given that my stomach is scarred pretty badly I'm not going to be wearing any midriff bearing clothes, and I am overall happy with how I look. However the flab bugs me!! The cost of surgery is pretty high for a vanity project, I have some loose skin…

I am down 28 lbs since starting my pre-op diet. 17 of that 28 has been post-op. I lost in the 1st week post-op, and then didn't lose anything for 2 weeks straight. Then I lost 3 lbs this week! Funny how this all works. I have advanced from soft food to cooked veggies, to eggs and Beans, and now chicken and shrimp. I have tolerated each food really well. I am at the point that I am getting more than 1/2 of my daily Protein goals from real food. Still have some minor discomfort at my incision sites, but for the most part, back to normal. Can't wait to get approval to get back to working out. As promised in my last post, I am attaching a photo of my incisions.Barely noticeab…

I was sleeved almost 2 weeks ago and currently on puréed foods. While I get full after a few tea spoons of food, I really feel hungry in between the meals even though I eat every 3 hrs as per dr orders. I didn't expect to be hungry. Is it common? Does it go away or will I always feel hungry but just not able to eat as much? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hello! Just wondering how many protein shakes do you drink a day? I have been drinking one in morning along with faithfully logging my food and meeting my protein goal 60-80 a day. But I wonder if I should drink more protein shakes maybe at least 1 more daily because I'm in a stall. And I think 60 gram protein may not be enough daily. Sleeved 12-5-16.

My surgery was at 1230pm today. Unfortunately, my single incision turned into two. The doctor says it was because of my height (6'7"). He did mention it could happen. I was released at 630pm, and now home in a lounger. The nurses advised me not to sleep on my back until the gas pressure is gone. The gas pressure certainly is still real thing. Surprisingly, liquids seem to be going down well. Granted small sips, but I drank 8oz of Water at hospital in 3 hours, and now 4oz in less than an hour. My surgeon didn't require a pre-op diet, except the day before the surgery. I put on a few pounds, but my SW 372 GW 260 Good luck to the rest of February sleevers. Le…

  22. So I got on the scale today, I had surgery one year, four months and five days ago. I weighed 398 pounds. My goal was 200 pounds. Ive been hovering around 205 for months. Today I got on the scale and got a very early Christmas present. 199.6. I've made it. To all of those who's words helped my during times of angst, or acted as a salve to help me during a hard time (Usually with my ass) THANK YOU, attached is proof that you can do it. 27. I was sleeved on 1/6 and ever since then, I've had a severe sharp, stabbing pain in my left collarbone area. My doctor also repaired an inguinal hernia during my sleeve surgery. This pain is NOT the same as the gas pains, which came and are long gone. I talked to my Dr about this during my 1 week follow up and he said to keep an eye on it... but when I saw the nurse practitioner for my 1 month follow up she didn't seem too concerned about it. I'm not having any shortness of breath or dizziness, my only other symptom relevant to this is that my left shoulder appears to be a little swollen. I took some of the painkillers I had left over from surgery (Percocet) and it…

Well starting Jan 16 I started feeling ill which came out of nowhere. I went to the er and they told me I had an appendix which is impossible Bc I do not have a appendix. So I was admitted 3 separate times and at one point. I am currently in the cleveland clinic getting tons of test. I will keep you in touch. I refuse to put the dogs outside. I've kind of been skirting around this question with my nutritionists, but I do plan on asking one of them this when I see them in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, I wanted to hear some opinions from other people on this topic. I'm 2 months post RNY but due to nausea and other problems, I'm just now really trying to get in 3 meals a day plus Snacks for my Protein. I can usually only eat about an ounce of food before I start feeling too full. My question is when I'm eating things like string cheese or a slice of cheese, should it take me 30 minutes to eat those as well? I only wonder because it seems like a long time for me. It's like I'll get busy or I'll put the stri…

Hi guys! Quick questions for sleeve vets. I never had any gastric reflux issues prior to surgery. 1 yr post op I had my gallbladder removed (That was 11/15) Now, for the past 8 or so months I get the worst reflux I have ever had. My surgeon says to take an OTC like Prilosec or Zantac. Well, that's not working so well. What's next? I can't live with this painful reflux that causes vomiting for the rest of my life. Have any of you experienced this? I won't have to have a bypass will I? Yikes! lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm two weeks out from my sleeve surgery and I'm really finding it hard to want to drink anything other than Water. I have a morning Protein shake and after that I'm just full all day long. (About 30g protein) I've been sipping water thru the day to stay hydrated but to think about anything with flavor just makes me nervous about over filling and I'd rather just skip every other meal. I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance that this is normal and just gets better in time. Thanks for any suggestions.

I am still doing 90grams of Protein and 1200 calories of food per day and walking 10 000 steps a day. I don't have time for gym right now. I have two jobs and i am going to school. If you were in my place, would you increase your calories or try to decrease it?? I was thinking of changing it to 800 or 1000 but research suggests that my body will go in starvation mode.
