So, i have been following a nutritionists diet.. I have been reading here that many things that my nut is having me eat i wont be able to eat afterwards. The brown rice, whole wheat bread etc (other items too). I dont care for those food items as it is.. I just dont get why they have u stress on eating these items and then after surgery its a no no. I know they want to make sure you follow a diet plan, but why so dramatic difference? Is it just because you need those items now but not after surgery?

I will be having my surgery just 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. I guess I will still be on pureed or soft foods then and likely not eating much at meals at all. We weren't planning on doing anything special - we usually don't do the whole big turkey dinner since none of us really even like it and I have one kid who is a vegetarian, one who is lactose intolerant and one who won't eat any carbs and another who is just picky as hell. Yeah, holidays are always fun! Usually I just make a variety of appetizers and we graze all day. But, I got a call that my son who lives far away that he is coming and bringing his girlfriend who we haven't met! So, now I don't know what to do? …

Hi Everyone! I have made the decision to have revision surgery. I don't have a date yet, and am still deciding between RNY and sleeve. I've had a lot of complications with my band in the 3 years since surgery. I have never managed to have restriction and still feel good and eat healthy foods. As soon as I have restriction, I get terrible acid reflux, night coughing/vomiting, and I can't eat anything but tortilla chips, crackers, etc. Even liquids won't go down unless I eat chips/crackers first. I just don't like my band. I know I make poor food choices, but these are honestly the only things that go down easy and don't make me feel sick. I also hate the feeli…

I'm almost two months RNY post-op. I travel for work every week, and almost every weekday I'm hanging out with my coworkers. I have chose not to tell my coworkers about my surgery, but they've all noticed the 52 lbs I've lost recently. Well, it's been difficult to go out with my coworkers to restaurants. When we go to something like Chilis, they'll glance curiously at me while I take 1/2 hour to eat about 20% of my plate and leave the rest of it to go. The server doesn't help either, often she returns to the table at the end of the meal and will look nervously at my plate and ask "Was there something wrong with your food?!?"? My rehearsed reply to that i…

My name is Jonathan and I am almost 1 year post op. I am down 210 lbs and am pushing to do some amazing things now that I have regained my truly incredible body. I am planning a half marathon and a triathlon next year. I will be working my way up to a full marathon, a full Ironman race, and a 585 mile mountain bike ride while camping my way across the Colorado Trail. I want to show others that I am just a normal guy who made a choice to get healthy and that if I can do it, anyone can. I am open and willing to mentor anyone who needs a friend. I can provide advice, motivation, and best of all, tasty recipes. I used to work as a ched for Walt Disney World in another life.…

When I was in high school many many years ago, I was a part of a church youth group. I spent a ton of time singing in the choir, listening to sermons, and going out door knocking. It was a major part of my life back then. During this time, I had a friend named Eric Foust (Picture below with his daughter). Now Eric was an interesting individual. He always had such an amazing and positive outlook on life that you couldn't help but gravitate towards him. One of our youth leaders once jokingly said that he was so friendly he was annoying. I am laughing now just thinking about him, his goofy nature, and this comment. It really is too true. He is now pastor of his own church in…

They almost cancelled my RNY yesterday after a 2 hour delay. The surgery before me had become very complicated. The NP said the surgeon was exhausted & he had already cancelled the surgery behind me. I was so stressed I thought this must be a sign to not do the surgery. But then my Dr. & his assistant came to see me. I asked my surgeon if he was ok had he eaten was he tired. He was very honest. He said I am going to eat now & I know my limits. I am ready to do your surgery. About 30 minutes later I was given some versed & taken to the OR. All the OR crew reassured me everything was going to be ok. Last thing I told the crew was pray to Jesus for no compli…

Questions you do NOT ask people who have had bariatric surgery (or frankly, anyone): #1) are you supposed to eat that? 2) are you eating too much? 3) is that all you're going to eat? 4) Any good buffets we can go to around here? And I wish they'd stop asking how we're eating and how much weight we've lost every time they call. I wish they'd just mind their own business. I will volunteer this info if/when I feel like bringing it up but I have a life and its not centered around what I eat. Sorry for the vent. One set of my in laws (the ones I can't stand) are visiting and these are some questions they've asked. #1 question really irks me. How do YOU respond to q…

My gf had the gby in 2007. I soon noticed that something more than her digestion had changed. She in a way became more "absent". Hard to explain but her personality changed: Not keen on life around her as before. Not as strong in her mind and will as before... In months things got worse. She started to loose focus; could stop in the middle of a conversation not remembering what we were talking about. Started to loose her way on familiar roads. Started to slip things out of her hand, while carrying it. After a year or so I noticed that her mathematic sense hat gone bad. Also her handwriting - which had earlier been one of the best - changed to "doctors writing", say hard t…

I have had 2 strictures to date and if a food wouldn't clear the opening it came back up, all foods. Now I think I am set with the opening large enough but as I try new things some don't agree. They are coming back up like chicken a lot of the time. Pork tasted good but came back up. Beef is good so far. When it disagrees with me i feel uncomfortable, get the foamies, then it heaves back up with not much effort on my part. This is not dumping right? It is my understanding dumping involves sweats, anxiety, heart palpitations, diarrhea, sometimes vomit, nausea. Am I correct? There is a difference between the two. Right? When they say if a food doesn't agree wi…

So I am one that hasn't kept any of my old sizes in my closet. I am getting ready to return to work next week. I have tried my "Work" clothes on and not much fitting. It is a wonderful thing but don't know how I feel about getting different sizes now. I went to "clothes mentor" I had some really nice clothes I wanted to trade for other clothes. I gave them a bag with 6 tops and skirt suit and a light weight swede jacket with shirt to match. They came back with a $4.00 offer for the jacket only! What are you crazy??? I took the jacket and the rest of the clothes back home. All of this took 45 minutes to tell me. I shopped around. I shouldn't have done it but just found a …

I can't remember why we can't eat and drink at the same time. I am starting on more "regular foods" 6 weeks out and find that I really need something to help some things go down. I am thinking we are not supposed to because if fills the pouch so you aren't hungry? Does anyone know another reason?

How often do u typical urinate through the day? since surgery and going back to work I maybe urinate twice a day. I drink (Maybe not as much as I should). I have a hard time having to time food and drinking. I usually always feel thirsty and will most always pick drinking over wanting to eat. Just debating if this is something I should make my doc aware of.

I had my band placed in December 2008, after many ups and downs my surgeons office told me that they no longer do the band since they had so many problems with it, they immediately sent me for a barium swallow and said I had a problem with my esophagus. So a complete unfill. Long story short gained weight. Back over 200! So after much soul searching and talking with my diabetes doc, I decided that a revision to RNY was the way to go. Now it seems as though I have to go through the whole process again. I had a little bit of anger around that, and voiced that to the people in the surgery center, Now it seems as though they really do not want to do surgery on me. The…

I'm about half way through the tons of pre-op clearance appointments for a December surgery. It's a tough place: both of hope and fears. But... today, I am celebrating baby steps and a few pre-op non-surgery victories. I have 4 kiddos: twins that are 15, a 5 year old, and a 3 year old. All girls. Where's my gold star for that alone? Anyway, I'm currently sharing plates, bowls, and utensils with my toddler. I did not get upset today when I had to have green instead of pink. I cut up her food before I diced mine to pencil-eraser size. I tried not to be jealous of her cute sippy cup sitting next to her plate. Tried. Seriously, not drinking before, during and af…

My bariatric Dr told me today if food gets stuck and it gets thrown up then we're not to eat any more until the next meal. This is after he asked me if food gets stuck and I told him about 2x a week, if that, ON MY FIRST BITE but ONLY because it's too big of a bite and if I eat my bites too fast. The pain is so intense in waves that I can't take it anymore and make myself bring that piece up and then I can continue to eat the rest of my meal. Ok, so, with only eating 3 meals per day, no Snacks, no supplimental Protein drinks allowed (though I do anyway. Screw him), I eat my first bite of food, it gets stuck, I suffer in intense pain until it passes (a while), still hungr…

So finally told my mom that I have a date set for my surgery. She tells me "why don't you try dieting one more time. ". "Your brother is doing great at this all protein diet." "You know your aunt Betty had it done and had diarrhea every time she ate anything" Ok I should have never told her. I know that now. Am I backing out no. Second thoughts no. Pissed that she wants me to delay and try another diet yes. I explained to her this is my one and only shot. If I try another diet I may never get gastric done. I have tried dieting my whole adult life and look what I have accomplished. Gained a second person. Another diet will prove nothing that has been proven already. …

Dec.19 was my surgery . I'm on the 4th. Day and healing. It seems that everything went well. I'm having a back and legs pain issue. But that was even before my surgery. If that wasn't bothering me I would be feeling fine. Trying to get all my liquids down . That is hard for me because I'm not a water drinker .Any one else just had surgery? Any good advice?

n 2009 I had the LapBand, in 2013 I had it removed due to issues. I decided to get the Vertical Sleeve Gastrostomy. After many issues, I saw a surgeon today, She said my issues may never end. I have two choices. To stay as is it, and deal, or try. Or to revise to Bypass and possibly have some improvement, OR remain the same. She mentioned because this would be my 3rd surgery, I have a HIGH chance of complications. I am just wondering if anyone has had all 3 procedures?! At this point it isn't about weight loss, HOWEVER, I want to, but its about my general health and my quality of life. Thank you in advance for your input. -Rxtine

I lost quite a bit of weight on a very low carb diet a year ago that also included "special" B12 Vitamin shots that you got 3 times per week. But like so many extreme diets I quickly gained it all back plus some after stopping. And unless you have a tiny stomach it seems like an impossible way of eating forever. I have not had my surgery yet which will more than likely be a gastric bypass. I've read that you really should try to max out your first year honeymoon period for as much weight loss as you can manage. After rearranging my insides I'd really like to make the most of it. I was thinking maybe a regular low carb diet for life might also be my best option becau…

Hi everyone!! So, my biggest delima right now is what proceedure to choose...The sleeve or the bypass? Sorry, this may be long..but here is where the issues come from. My PCP is a former sleeve patient & swears by it. My surgeon will do either proceedure. However, he has concerns about the long term effects from the sleeve. He says it hasnt been out that long (vs the bypass), thus doesnt know the long term effects & results (10+ years, lifetime, etc). He used the example that the lapband had great success rates in the early stages (such as where the sleeve is at), but after about 7-8 years there were a lot of failures & revisions needed. I need to lose a…

I've been going back and forth about posting this here but I'm starting to get very discouraged and I was hoping someone could chime in with some suggestions for me. I had surgery on Sept 16th. I'm about 2.5 weeks out of surgery. I've had a fairly easy recovery; minimal pain, no bowel issues, a couple of bouts with nausea but I'm pretty much back to my old self again with the exception of my eating habits. Within the first 10 days, I lost about 9 lbs which I thought was great. Since then, nothing, nada. The number on my scale has been the exact same with I find incredibly confusing and discouraging. I'm still in phase 2 of my plan, which is full liquids. I understand…
