Hi. Just wondering if any ex-smokers out there could answer this for me... My surgeon requires 90 days quit before the surgery and I'm 2 months in to that but slipped up and smoked a couple cigarettes in a moment of weakness. Do you think they will be able to tell or do the tests they do only go back 30 days? I'm really freaked out I will have to start over completely. Thanks, Stacy

Just got the call on surgery time. Reporting to Geisinger, in Danville PA at 5:45 AM. Thank god we decided to go down a day early and got reservations at a motel. Will be able to shower in comfort and not have to leave home at an ungodly hour of the morning to get there, as it is a 2 1/2 hour drive. My preop diet is finally getting easier, not really hungry anymore. Hope this bodes well for after surgery. Been watching my sugar as I have been off my meds for over a month, they seem to be stable for now. My husband and my grandaughter (18 yrs old) will be with me for moral support. The day after my surgery my son is getting a biopsy of his thyroid. I wish we could be th…

Hello All! I have been through all the hoops, am approved and have had surgery on the books and cancelled a few times. My hubby and I want another child. Mine is 3 and I don't want the gap to get too far apart but at the same time I want to have surgery too. If I don't have surgery before the end of the year, I have to restart the entire 6 month process all over again. I am just besides myself with decision and don't know what to do. I am totally torn - have surgery first, wait at least a year and then try for baby or have baby first and then hope after I have the baby I can lose weight and or restart the entire process again. Any opinions, insight or suggestions for me? …

Hello all! I'm new here. I had gastric bypass August 25. I was on a week diet starting August 18 and I've lost 30 pounds since then. I am having a problem with mental hunger. I started eating purée today and I'm ok but the mental huger is tough. Any ideas for yummy purée dinners and how to better deal with mental hunger?

I had my rny revision last monday. I had a very extreme case. 2 months after having my son my band slipped and twisted causing lots of damage and had to be removed that morning. The rny is my new beginning I had gained all 100lbs lost in the 6 months between removal and rny. My preop started 8/15 and I lost 16 lbs prior to surgery. At my 1 week post op I was down 4 lbs on top of the water weight from 6 days in the hospital. I came out of a 7 hr surgery with a tube down my nose into my bowel to keep my intestines from healing shut. I had to have a catheter and was medically induced sleep for 3 days. Once they removed the tube and catheter I was up and walking on day 4. By …

Does anyone else have this problem? When I wake up, I feel weak and sometimes have the shakes. It wears off after awhile, but it is really annoying. I have been getting all my Protein in and hydrating just fine, but this still happens. I was wondering if it's because I am going 6-8 hours not drinking anything because I am asleep. My RNY was July 22nd.

So I am approximately 50 days out from surgery (I am litterally still in shock and disbelief) and I'm trying to get myself to a place where I feel prepared. I wanted to see from y'all that have already been though this have any advice for me. Anything you recommend I do or get before hand. What helped you in the first couple of weeks. Mistakes you made that I may learn from. Any and all advice is welcome

I haven't seen this subject so I'll tell all. I had RNY on the 18th of Aug and was in the hospital 4 days. Three days after I was released I had dumping from a BariWise Cream of Tomato soup. There was dark blood in all three of my bowel movements. The next day I had another bowel movement with dark blood in it. I called the RN and she was really concerned about the color but to me red is red and all shades in between. We agreed it was old blood and to just watch it. Two days later I had another dumping episode from clear chicken broth. There was a lot of red and dark blood coming out. I could hardly stand up without feeling like I was going to pass out. I made it to bed t…

So at my first follow up appointment I was a little bummed at the fact I hadn't list as much weight as I anticipated I would. My surgeon said anything you lose in the first 6 weeks is like icing on the cake, that typically it takes a while for your body to heal and realize what's going on and what it's dose to do with all the changes. I'm coming up on my 6 weeks, I'm down 22 since surgery day, so I'm happy about that, but was curious if you all agree with the surgeon comment. Did you see a difference/increase in your weight loss progression at 6 weeks and beyond or was your big loss immediately following surgery?

Not sure if this will help or not but there is a Book called Emotional First Aide Kit that addresses so many of the issues surrounding Bariatric Surgery. I know before I started this journey I knew several people who had done this and had gained every bit of their weight back. I did this for health reasons of course will be nice losing the weight. However I want to be as armed as possible. I did not go through all this to gain it back. Also I have had people say: "don't you remember so and so who did that and look at them now. One thing is what is going on with "them" is their journey not mine. I hate it when people cast stereotypes. I do see how important i…

Hi everyone, I am new here and my name is Tonya and I live in FL. I am working with a dietitian at the Bariatric Center and will be having surgery in Nov. I am really mixed between having a gastric sleeve or a bypass. My mother and 2 of my neighbors have had a bypass; however, I have not ever spoken to anyone who had the sleeve. I have some time before a decision has to be made but I want to be educated before I do. I know everyone is different but I am just wanting to gather any info I can and take it from there. Have a great day!

At two years post op, health insurance no longer covers the sublingual version of omeprazole. The sublingual version of omeprazole successfully treated my GERD. I switched to the over the counter version because the health insurance has decided not to cover any form of omeprazole. After using the capsule for a few months, I find that the GERD is back with a vengeance. I had GERD pre-op and I have it post-op and expect to always have it. What are the experiences of others? Has anyone else experienced a difference in effectiveness between the sublingual version versus the capsule version of omeprazole? I did some research on the web and found an abstract of a st…

Need support/guidance. I had my first ice cream sandwich yesterday and afterwards I told myself "that won't happen again." Well today on my to ski I couldn't stop eating "treats" that were 190 calories a pop. They were s'more bars made by a friend. I couldn't say no to these things yesterday or today. I've noticed myself eating treats more and more. I'm so scared and disappointed. New Year's Day I went to outback for the first time and ate most of my salad, the sweet potato and steak. Now I didn't finish the steak and ate it later that night but I looked at my plate and couldn't believe I ate all of that. Have I stretched out my stomach? Should I just "move on" and …

I have been planning on having the sleeve all along and then I saw the nutritionist today. She recommended that I consider bypass as I have a real problem with binging on sugar. I am not sure. I would love to hear why people chose bypass over sleeve. RIght now my only major health problem is obesity and arthritis. My family history is horrific however, none of us are a normal weight. I feel like I have been working for years just to stay under 250. My father died of a heart attack at 62. He weighed over 500 pounds when he died. I am 52 now and want to be able to stay active into my 70's and 80's so I really want to be sure I make the right choice now.

I'm really getting tired of the air bubbles and birps, or feeling like I need to but can't, just from drinking. I'm taking small sips, not gulping, and air still gets down. I've tried straws, no straws, didn't matter. It's annoying and frustrating. Any suggestions? (Almost 5wks post op)

I'm almost 15 months post op and have experienced Dumping Syndrome twice. I have to have lab work for my endocrinologist today and the one for blood sugar is making me nervous. I have to drink that nasty syrup. I never even thought twice about it but when I woke up this morning I was wondering " Will it make me dump?". How much sugar is in that stuff? I've dumped on as little as 13 grams. Since I have to be out all morning - lab work, car inspection, then Dr appt for my poison ivy - I'm very concerned about not being close to a bathroom if I dump. And the other effects of dumping that could make me feel terrible and also interfere with my morning. Has anyone who gets d…

Today was back to school day, and I was finally able to wear a dress that I ordered off Zulily two years ago. It was labeled 3x, but like most things on Zulily, it ran very small. It was more like a L or XL. I rarely wear dresses, so I felt kind of weird, but it was nice to finally get in it. This is a picture my 8 year-old took of my oldest son and me. He's a senior this year.

My bypass is tomorrow. I am nervous just cause it's surgery and this is the first time I'll be facing surgery without my Mom. I;m 57 and being a big baby!! But I am also worried that it might have to be an open operation vs laproscopic. Surgeon of course says not to worry. But they said that when I got my tubes tied, when I had my gallbladder out and when I had a hyster. All said it would be laproscopic and it wasn't. Anyone had open surgery? Is it awful??

Hello friends, I have started my journey towards bariatric surgery this past June 2014. My surgery will be late Sept. 2014. I have heard and been learning a lot about "support" after surgery. Obviously everyone should be ecstatic for me that I am on my way to getting rid of or at least greatly reducing the severity of that which is slowly killing me at the present time: Diabetes, Fatty Liver Disease, GERD, sleep Apnea, Out of control/remarkably high cholesterol numbers as well as remarkably low "good cholesterol" numbers, social anxieties, depression, pre-arthritic symptoms, etc... Well... the obviously clear reasons for my choice are apparently not what others wou…

I have worked out through my entire band journey and have found no problems when I work out however, I have really gotten to a point where I can't eat very much and I fear that my workouts are draining me of energy and I get dizzy when I stand up fast. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and is it normal. I do more weight lifting now than cardio (15 min) because I am at a good weight as of right now. I have lost 84 lbs. In a little over a year in a half. I do take my multi-vitamins and I eat about 1/4 cup to 1/2 a cup of food when I do eat.

So I told my boss this morning that I am planning on bariatric surgery and that date will be in October or November. I don't have a date yet. She asked me to wait until December since it's elective. I really don't want to wait until the holidays dang it. I want this done ASAP. Not wait a month and half after my last dr appt. tempted to just hit fmla up and do it sooner anyways since they can't stop fmla. But is it worth it to piss off my boss? I work for a large hospital and the October/November months are our inspection window this year. What do you all think? Should I discuss this with the HR dept?
