I am meeting with surgeon in a couple weeks and we are discussing the sleeve verses bypass. I am 50 years old, no other health concerns except my knees are bad from my extra weight and the obvious.. I am overweight scratch that obese : ) So for those of you who have had bypass I was wondering if you would now have considered the sleeve or visa versa. THANK YOU ahead of time as I am a newbie. Have been working towards a sleeve since February and finally was given a date for Sept 2nd but surg suggested bypass. I feel a little unprepared because all my research has been for the sleeve. What has been your experience for recovery? How many days in the hospital?

I'm currently a high school teacher. Recent changes in our administration coupled with other statewide education factors have me thinking about a career change. I'm very interested in becoming a nutritionist and trying to get a job with a bariatric surgeon so I can help people that have had issues with weight like me. I think this would be a great career path for me because I could use my skills as a teacher, writer and public speaker that I have gained for 14 years of teaching English, speech and journalism. I've done some research and it looks like there are some online masters programs out there that I could work on while still teaching. My question for anyone in th…

I have attended about a half a dozen bariatric surgery support group meetings prior to surgery and about a dozen after surgery. When I first started going to these, it threw me for a loop. It was one horror story after another. I was almost at the point of rethinking the operation. But then I realized that those that attended these meeting presented a distorted view of the surgery. Most regulars had problems and some were significant ones. Most individuals who had surgery and didn't experience problems by and large did not attend these meetings. If everything was going well, why go to the meetings! I turned some of this negativity around by adding solutions when I…

Hello! I am in the ins approval waiting period to get my revision from the band to bypass. I got my band in 2009 and after years of trying to find my "sweet spot" and basically becoming bulimic when my band was filled I knew it was time for a change. I was approved for the surgery in 2012 and found out I was pregnant about a month later! My son is now almost a year (tear) and I'm gearing up for this new change. I'm looking forward to being able to eat the foods that are good and NOT throwing them up and opting for "slider" foods. I've recently become a single mom, my ex was abusive-physically, emotional, mental. I feel like this is my new lease on life for me and my son. …

Hi, my surgery was 2 months ago on April 3rd. I had gastric bypass rny and since surgery, I've lost 25lbs. It seems kinda measly to me. Especially, for it to be rny. I'm seeing ppl with the sleeve or lapband losing more. I thought the weight comes off quicker with the bypass? Oh well, just so long as it comes off. I definitely feel so much better! How about you guys?

I am working on wrapping my mind on this no sugar thing. Intellectually I get it and can cite all the reasons to " just do it". But emotionally...pow! Hits me like a bag of quarter rolls. I gave up refined sugar and processed foods for 4 years ..but there was raw honey. Bees were my friends. And the option was still there. I guess it still will be but I don't wanna get dumped! No doubt I am a sugar addict. I can eat Healthy meals very easily but then binge on 6 donuts. I know me well enough that I know will get this but for today...it is making me dizzy. But hey I quit smoking after 21 years and haven't looked back so anything is possibly.

So she lives 1000 miles away. is ten years older than me, and her doctor told her she needs to lose THREE POUNDS!! She is the only one of my siblings I told about my surgery and just did so a couple of weeks ago. Amongst all the dumb statements and questions, today she said, instead f congratulating me on losing 63 lbs, "When you get to where you want to be, you are going to be really saggy and wrinkled". I feel so much better now

I am having my band removed in 3 weeks. I also have diabetes and have now decided to just go all the way with RNY due to it. I told my surgeon that I would do it in 2 separate surgeries, but feeling the way I do now, I want to call Monday morning and ask to start the process for RNY ASAP. I cant tell if these feelings are beginning signs of nerve damage or worse. I'm scared to death to have the procedure in one step, but I'm more afraid to wait around. I really need your support right now! All revisioners

Hey everyone, I have only 2.5 lbs a week since surgery (even the first week). I have read the average is 5-15. I know that is still good to lose 2.5 but I'm confused because it's not as much as I thought. Let me also say this is only week 2. Did anyone have slow weight loss at the beginning?

I am finding myself chilled to the bone at night in bed. My body feels warm to the touch except for my extremities (hands, feet, nose, basically). It doesnt seem to come with a real fever though, my actual temperature is normal. But the cold feeling and the shivering is intense. It eventually passes, and never happens during the day. Anyone else experience this? And if so, do you have any coping strategies? I'm thinking it's a normal side effect of the body changes, but man, it's hard to deal with. Any help, or even commiserating, would be awesome... heather

Hi All, I had surgery on 5/30. Though my incisions are healing nicely and my gas pains are gone. I'm still having some muscle pain on my right side close to my belly button. It feels like a muscle pain and it hurts when I laugh, or cough. I'm at the point where I need to hold pressure to the spot/ muscle to cough, or laugh, or even sit up. Could it be a possible hernia? Thanks in advance!

I had to get emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. Cause: I ate too much Fiber too quickly. That cause the small bowel to kink. I did get a naso-gastric tube. It was truly not big deal. Just remain calm when it is going in and follow the instructions. Don't fear it. It made me feel so much better after one hour. I am sharing these experiences in hopes of helping others. Do go to the emergency room if you feel bad. Bowel obstructions, left untreated, can be particularly dangerous. Lesson to me: achieve more balance between high-fiber and lower-fiber foods.

Just a question about shoes. Did you lose shoe sizes after weight loss and were you able to wear different kind of shoes now that you weren't able to prior to surgery? I really want to start wearing wedges and heels but my feet, ankles and knees hurt terribly with any shoes higher than 1-2inches.

Im having revision from Lap Band to Gastric Bypass. Im having second thoughts as to if I should even go through a third surgery. ( Had a revision lap band for flipped port). Im very afraid GP will fail. Lost 70 lbs with Lapband, but gained 30 back with pregnancy. I dont want to do the fills any more, and want something that will help me loose faster. But, not so sure of wanting to go through it all over again.

Hey eveyone, I got the band in 2007. I was a model patient and followed all of the rules to a T. I have learned to live within and EAT within the limits that the band gave me. I have lost 70 lbs of the 100lbs that I had to loose. But was told by my Doc. that was really good for the band. Well, about this time last year I got reallllly sick. A real bad tummy bug and it was not very nice to me. Not long after that I developed very bad reflux. Stupid me I did not think much of it because I had been having heartburn and some reflux on and off. But this was diffrent. Then I had the flu and it gave me very bad dry heaves and then another round of so kind of tummy b…

Hi! Just curious - where are you from, where did you/are you planning to get the surgery, and how long did it take from your first appointment to your surgery? I'm in Canada and so discouraged to hear it's a 3-5 year wait. I'm a university student so I can't afford to self-pay even to Mexico right now, so it helps with waiting to hear y'all's stories!

I am so excited. chicken wings, fries, ice cream, gushers…) Then, I spent the entire day yesterday cooking so that I have the six weeks of foods portioned and ready in my freezer. I bought 2 oz. condiment containers with lids (50 for $2.95) and used 1 liter bottles for freezing fresh chicken broth. Cooking from scratch, a six week supply of post-op food cost me $75. I also added 0% greek yogurt, chicken broth and almond milk to pretty much everything, so that there is Protein in all meals. Here’s the list: 7 2 oz. servings Refried Beans (3 cubes) 19 2 oz. servings Chicken Zucchini Souffle 17 2 oz. pureed Tuna 31 2 oz. servings Mashed potato 12 2 oz. serving…

Hi guys. As previously posted, my bypass didn't work. I think it's because they left the stoma too big and I have zero restriction. They have been less than helpful in finding a cause for the failed surgery and have started to say things like 'I might have to accept that bypasses just don't work for done people' lol. They have, however reluctantly agreed to a second opinion and I will make an appointment to see another surgeon soon. However, I need some advice on what I should ask. He'll have both sets of X-rays that have been done but no other tests have been done and I'm not really sure how to get the best out if my meeting with him. Any advice? Thanks :-)

Had lapband to rny on May 21,2014. Lost 20 and then bam I have been stalled!!! I go up and down 2 pounds for the past week. It's so frustrating, makes me think I am doing something wrong. I know it's a stall but I worry I won't lose anymore.. It's messing with my head major! I really expected to continue losing like I was. I know it's not reality though. When I was banded in 2008 I was 300 pounds lost 120 in 9 months. Had to gain some to get the revision to rny so day of surgery I was 245. Now I am 225 and stuck. I wish I had the power to not weigh daily but I am so OCD I need to know lol. Any veteran revisioners to through this at the beginning??

Hi, I had my RNY 2 years ago July. I just gave birth to twins in Feb. I gained almost 40lbs and have successfully lost almost most of it. However, I am now at a MAJOR stall and having a HORRIBLY difficult time getting back into the swing of things as a WLS patient. I tried to do the 5DPT but having newborns and being sleep deprived, I was in the worst mood and didn't feel I could take care of my girls well enough, so I stopped. I believe I need to do it again, I did it once before and it worked wonders, I am just afraid of failing again and not being the best mommy I can be. I was apart of a different support group on FB, but that turned out to be so much drama, altho…

Over and over, scientific studies consistently tell us that gastric bypass surgery helps reduce diabetes. Most recently, a study funded by the National Institutes of Health found the same thing. Researchers divided patients into different groups. All individuals in the study were obese and had uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. One group received no weight loss surgery, another group had roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and the thåird group had sleeve gastrectomy. The study lasted for a year. During this time, all of the study groups had medical counseling and treatment for diabetes. After one year, individuals who had weight loss surgery had better insulin control than the …

I had my revision from VBG to bypass on May 6th. I went in at 287, I gained during surgery 296 (I get it was fluid) but still stuck at 277. And the scale really has not moved in over 2 weeks. Anyone else having this issue? I am over a month and thought it would be coming off faster than that. I do my water and protein. Can not walk a lot due to knee issues.

Seems to me that the sleeve and band topics are more supported. Is this just because, or do you think other options are more fashionable? Or is there more to it than that? I wanted a bypass an was told that a sleeve would suit me better, then I was told by the dietician that I was down for a bypass.
