Hi all, Im new to this site and have been lurking about reading. I have been accepted for bariatric surgery, my surgeon is pushing for me to have a bypass as he thinks my snacking was the main reason for my obesity, therefore the sleeve wouldn't suit me. I was aiming for the sleeve as it was less invasive, but his comments are changing my mind but still 50/50 Anyway, I have read that A lot of you guys have had problems with health, diabetes, Gerd, etc and have been on lots of medications, so you choosing surgery was the best for curing those reasons. For myself I dont take regular medication apart from an inhaler for my mild asthma. My knees experience some pai…

So I'm 17 days post op and have been trying the puree food slowly as it's hard to get much more than water down. I've been tracking my food on fitness pal and I'm only having about 300 calories a day. Is this normal or ok???

With eggs, tuna salad and perhaps a yogurt dip, what do you use to dip? Is there a cracker or bread to purchase to use . I know thick bread is a no no. What about pita or those rye crackers that are really dry and crunchy? Suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are able, without it hurting, to drink fast, is it okay to do so? I find myself gulping and it doesn't hurt but I was wondering if there was another reason for not drinking fast? Thanks!

Ok I'm almost 4 weeks post op. I've been to my 2 week dr appt already but forgot to ask the dr. He did mention that the incisions looked like they were healing ok and that I had the dissolving stitches. My question is I have what seems like a small filament sticking out of one of the new scars. Very tiny. I can barely see it. I can feel it. I tried pulling on it with tweezers but it's definitely stuck. I'm going to ask the dr about it but my next appt is in two weeks and this is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

I am so upset right now. I had an alcohol problem in the past in which i went and got help back in 2008. i haven't touched it since except for last night and i drank a little too much at a Christmas party. My husband got very upset and called the hospital , i guess to see if they would take me in, and he told me we were going home and instead took me to the hospital for them to detox me.They kept me till this morning and told me I could go home. I am already all set for the gastric bypass and am now waiting to get my pulminary test done on Dec. 30th, everything else i have done. Supposed to have the surgery on Jan. 27th. Now I am afraid they will deny me. Anyone know …

I can't believe how good I feel. I was up and walking the evening after surgery and only took two doses of the heavy pain killers. I was released from the hospital yesterday and but for a bit of grogginess... I'm doing great now at home. I've been doing my walking, drinking my water and protein drinks. Tonight I liquefied some soup and had a few sips of that. But I cannot believe how good this is going so far. It's hard not to think the other shoe will drop... But has anyone else had an easy go of surgery and post op?

6 weeks out. I have no trouble eating. I'm only supposed to be eating 1/4 C of food at a meal, I haven't tried it but I bet I could easily eat 1 C! Does that mean something is wrong with my pouch? I also have absolutely no problems drinking fast. I want to barely be able to get 1/4 C of food down! On top of that in 6 weeks since my surgery I've only lost 14 pounds!

So today my mom tells me that my dad is afraid to have the surgery. He won't tell me because he knows I'm gonna do what I feel is best for me. He's never been one to tell me how he really feels about things because he respects my ability to make my own decision. Has anyone ever had this problem? What do you say to someone who cares so much about you and will support you no matter what to help them know that it's gonna be fine? I think he's afraid because we know some people who had bypass and had a lot of problems after....almost died kind of problems.

Sorry I just need to rant.. My husband is probably SO sick of hearing me obsess over everything..Who is with me?! Surely I'm not the only one! Oh man! 2 more weeks until my last weigh in. phew. Now that's off my chest... Lets see............... >> Psych Eval done & passed >> Nutritionist visit(s) done >> sleep study (no sleep apnea!) >> 5 other monthly weigh ins & supervised diet completed >> food journaling done >> Met with surgeon Now, I go back and obsess over every single thing. What did I miss? I feel like something wasnt done! My weight jumped up and down (very few lbs in either direction). I again obsess ove…

I'm 7 months post op and am still struggling with knowing how many calories I should be eating each day. I know everyone's doctor is different. I'm just trying to get some idea of how much others are taking in. My doctor says 800 is too much and his own dietician is telling me I'm not eating enough and should have about 950 per day. I feel like banging my head against the wall. I'd greatly appreciate knowing what others are doing or have done at this point post op. Thanks!

I'm 18 days post op Roux-En-Y gastric bypass. I am feeling really great with the exception of low energy. I am working hard to get all of my calories and protein requirements in daily and wake up with a lot of energy but as the day goes on, I get really tired really quickly and feel like I need to rest. I would like to get more walking in but taking a shower wears me out! At this point I feel like I had more energy when I weighed 60 pounds more than I weigh today (that includes presurgery weight loss). Am I expecting too much too soon? I realize rest is important in recovery as well but I feel like I'm doing a lot of resting.... Any thoughts?

Hi. So many of us have a goal weight in mind... do any of you have a goal size? I've been up and down my entire life. The biggest was a size 22/24 (just prior to my surgery)and my smallest size was a size 5... 20 plus years ago. Remembering back, I think I felt my healthiest at a size 10/12. That is what I'm aiming for. I'm currently a size 16 and only 4 months post surgery...so maybe I'll make it to a 6 or 8, but would be satisfied with the 10. What's your goal...or is it all about the numbers on the scale?

I have known my surgery date for a few weeks now but just found this group. I did find a couple of other ladies who have the same surgery date as me and we have been emailing each other a few times a week. Any additional support is welcome and appreciated! I am having the bypass surgery, as are the others who I'm emailing with. My wls class is on wed Dec 3rd. I'm sure we will discuss vitamins and protein shakes, also the requirements for the liquid diet. I have my vitamins ordered and also have my protein shakes. I haven't bought much else because I don't know the specific requirements being made by my doctor. I feel ready for the surgery- definitely excited a…

The APA (American Psychiatric Association) recognizes something called "Body Dysmorphic Disorder" as a psychiatric condition. It basically means this (copied from wikipedia): "a disorder that involves belief that one's own appearance is unusually defective and is worthy of being hidden or fixed... If the perceived flaw has any foundation in reality, it is typically minor, though severely exaggerated." It's usually diagnosed in people with anorexia, to explain how someone can look in the mirror and describe their 80-pound body as grossly fat. I've been thinking about this a lot lately as I get ready for surgery (28 days and counting!), and review pictures of myself …

I am just starting all of the paperwork with my doctor. I really had to think hard about the answers to the questions. I know it is going to be a long journey as I have just begun. I hope I can even have the surgery done. There are a few other things that may complicate it more. Like my enlarged heart, prader willies, hyper thalamic and sleep apnea.

I have recently started using the Everyday app on iphone, and thought some of you might enjoy it as well. The app prompts you to take a selfie of your face every day, enabling you to make a time-lapse movie of your face over time. I got the idea from watching this: It seemed like fun to see how my face changes over time with WLS, and thought you might enjoy it too. You can read more about the app on their website (http://everyday-app.com/) or in the app store.

Hi my name is Austin, I am 21 yrs old and my surgery is set for Jan. 5th. When I entered into the process I clocked in at 428 lbs with a bmi of 58,I really let myself go, which my surgeon won't allow anyone over 60bmi to have the surgery... it wasn't until I hit 400 lbs that I ever really let it sink in that I was to far gone. You see I always convinced myself that oh I'm young I can loose weight if I really tried. But after several, upwards to 12 different diet and exercise programs, slimfast, nutrisystem, Atkins, south beach, etc. I finally broke down, and admitted defeat until my doctor uttered his best advice. Gastric Bypass. I went for my seminar and it opened my…

Hello my name is Michelle and I had the band Sept 2006. I am awaiting approval for my band to be converted to GB, I was submitted to insurance on Nov 20th so it should not be too much longer. For the first time today I had that what if feeling, what if I don't get approved. I have great insurance and they tell me it will be ok, but what if. Can anyone tell me how much different then their band it feels? I have lots of restriction already, but my problem is everything gets hovering in my band and my stomach is empty still so I'm sometimes hungry but cant eat. My dietician says she says eating will feel so much better after for me. But what if I don't have the restri…

Hey guys - hope everyone is doing well on their diets. Loving it that I can now have veggies and fruits!!!! My last threshold is grains at 6 months. I really don't miss them much though. Seems like my weight loss has slowed a little now; averaging 2-3 pounds per week. My average day is for Breakfast - either a Protein shake or protein bar; for lunch - protein (mostly cold cuts) and then for a snack during the day I have a GNC Quest bar (chocolate and Peanut Butter are my fav). For supper - same as lunch except I usually add a couple of veggies. I don't seem to get hungry, but I sure know when the fork needs to be put down!!!! It's a weird sensation, isn't it? Kin…

I am 6 months post op as of 4/15. Down 73 with just 10-15 to go to reach my goal weight. I have been having serious issues with my tailbone. I'm talking OUCH!!!!!! I can't sit for very long which is problematic because my commute is long- anywhere from 2 to 4 hours round trip each day. I drive a nice comfortable car, old but still nice. I've tried the pillows and while those work in my office chair, they aren't so good in the car. Anyone else have pain after dropping their weight? The explanation I was given was that my hips and spine, including my tailbone, shifted to carry the excess weight over the last 20 years. So now the tailbone sticks out due to a la…

This weekend, I told my parents that I'm having surgery on January 6. I hadn't shared anything with them up to this point, so there was a lot of catch-up to do. As expected, my mom was concerned and skeptical and listened with a furrowed brow, and my dad just listened for a bit before expressing his unconditional support. My weight problems are reflected in dad's side of the family and he's always been able to understand my experience better than mom does. He's gone through a few rounds of weight loss himself, but generally manages okay just by being extremely active and athletic. My mother and her side of the family are all very slim. She's 65 and maybe weighs a f…

I've started a list of things I can't do today, and look forward to doing once my excess weight is reduced or gone. I don't recall a day when I was suddenly unable to do these things, but I know I can't do them now and am excited to see them return. In other words, these are some of the small victories and milestones I look forward to achieving. What are yours? In no particular order... buy clothes in a normal store wear necklaces without extensions wear knee-high boots board an airplane without worrying who'll be next to me and whether I need a seatbelt extension cross my legs in a meeting ride a horse fit into a wetsuit hike and schlep around mountains and islands…

The only medication I have been told I cannot take now that I have had RNY are any type of NSAIDs. Ibuprofen used to be my go to medication for the joint pain caused by my RA but I can't do that anymore. Another poster told me we are not supposed to take Pepto Bismol and I didn't know anything like that. When I ended up back in the hospital and told the surgeon I took it he never said anything to the tune of not supposed to take it. What do you know of that we can/can't take?

Hello all! I am almost 3 weeks post op and I was wondering if anyone is having the same problems as me. I can not tolerate most sugar free items. I get a terrible upset stomach and nausea. But if I drink something without sugar free I'm fine. Is there something wrong? I'm kind of torn between drinking and eating what I'm supposed to and feeling sick or drinking the other stuff and feeling fine. I've been just drinking water lately. I see my doctor in 2 days.

So we had this long discussion at work yesterday about age and and the joys of being in our forties. The 20 and 30 something's (all sweet young whipper snappers that I adore) just couldn't believe that 40 is a good thing. Out of curiosity, what do YOU like about your current age and if you could, would you change it? I'm 40. I'm happier and more confident with myself than I've ever been (this starts happening pre-op but the surgery has helped). I no longer have drama...If there is drama I let it roll on past me. I think maybe I've figured out what really matters, what does, and what is just icing. Other then the lines starting to show on my face, I wouldn't change…
