I have followed a couple discussions about whether we're telling people we are having lapband surgery, who we're telling, and why/why not. Up to this point I have only told my husband and my three closest girlfriends. I live in an active retirement community where I am involved in a lot of activities. I know my losing weight is going to be fodder for some of the busy-bodies around here and I just didn't want to hear their crap about my health care choices. After reading so many other opinions, ones that match my own point of view of secrecy and ones that challenged my senses by being so open about it, I came to the conclusion that I really don't give a hoot what other…

It seems like I have been submerged in this process forever, but I FINALLY got my surgery date last evening!!! April 8th is D-day... or should I say B-day!!! I'm nervous but more Excited!!!!... I am not worried about my surgery. I am a registered nurse and have done time in the OR. In fact, I've seen my surgeon in action (though he wasn't putting in a band). Still, it is strange to think I'll be the one on the table! My nerves stem from a fear of failure. I have lost just over 20lbs so far and feel like I'm already on the road to the new me.... I just REALLY want this to work! Anyway, the 8th feels sooo ok far away, but I know that before I know it, it will be t he 1st an…

My name is Kristen...and I am totally a food addict. It took me forever to figure that out. I eat because I love, love, love food. I am not an emotional eater. I am not eating to hide myself. I just love food so much, and I experience "high's" from food consumption, just as a drug addict would. I also work in software development. I work from home for a company on the east coast as a SQA engineer...and I also have a photography business. I am 39 years old, and as long as I could remember I have struggled with my weight. For me there wasn't a moment where I became fat, like having a baby or something...no, I have just always struggled with my weight. I have yo-yo'd with …

Just wanted to stop lurking and reading other peoples post and step up and out of my own fear of revealing myself......Hid behind weight, and computer screens far too long! Have my surgery scheduled for 4/12/13 and am so seriously ready and excited. This is a gift to myself that has been seriously over due. I want to thank everyone for sharing all your stories, experiences, pitfalls, succeses, and fears. Reading your post have helped me to put a healthy and realistic perspective of what to exspect from VS surgery. I need to hear on a daily basis that this isn't a magic pill and that if nothing changes in me.....nothing changes! I am ready for this on all levels emotiona…

Hello everyone... I had my band done on August 15, 2012 and had lost 50lbs the first two months. Since November I've been fluctuating 10lbs back and forth. I have been on this plateau and have not lost anymore weight with having two fills. The first 50lbs I lost was without any fills. I just went back to the doctor last Thursday and he did not give me another fill, he said that he doesn't believe I am eating enough. He believes now that I have been released to start back going to the gym (hadn't been since before surgery) and him wanting me to eat more especially breakfast, that I will start to lose again. I just had gotten really discouraged due to not losing weight…

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself as "Pixie Dust." I just attended my first seminar in making a decision which WLS is best for me. I have decided on the Sleeve. I had a one-on-one with a Bariatric Nurse yesterday & have an appt with my family doc on Friday (to renew my meds), so will bring the blood work order I received from the nurse, to see if my doc would like to add anything else to it, since he sends me every 6 months for lab work. Then hopefully have my blood work done on Saturday morn. Monday I go for my psych eval...it was just moved up from from a month from now, since I've made it clear that I need my surgery sometime in the summer ti…

Hello everyone! Im new to the site and I have some questions for ya...I am having a hard time deciding between the sleeve and the bypass. I am diabetic with a bmi of 35. I would like to lose 80 lbs and be done with the diabetes. I am leaning towards the sleeve but I have two concerns...I won't lose enough weight and I won't completely get rid of the diabetes. There are so many pros and cons to each and I'm just confusing myself by obsessing over the research. Anyone out there having or have had the same issue?

Hello, everyone! I am a 32 year old female from Portland, Oregon, and I'm in the very beginning stages of my WLS journey. I just applied last week to a clinic, was got the call on Thursday from the insurance coordinator. She said that my insurance does cover the surgery, and that I don't need to do any doctor supervised diets - the only requirement is that the insurance company wants to know an exact surgery date 6 months in advanced. So basically at my first appointment I'll get my surgery date (probably sometime in November, I'm thinking) and then the waiting will begin. I'm 5'2 and I weight 240. I've been heavy most of the life, although in high school I was down…

I just had surgery on March 13th as a birthday present to myself to get healthy. Only 3 days post op I'm know I'm having similar thoughts as I'm sure some do - did I do the right thing? I am feeling pretty good for the most part - very little pain but a lot of gas. I have been sticking to my diet pretty faithfully although it has been tough. I'm not really hungry just want to taste " real" food. I just keep telling myself this is temporary and will be well worth it when I can shop for cute clothes that will actually fit. I'm excited for this new journey.

So I am 28 and was banded January 18, 2013. I started my journey weighing 319 lbs which was an all time high for me and seeing that number on the scale was a wake up call. I lost 23lbs prior to the surgery. Surgery was painful ( who would have thought someone probing around and installing a foreign device in you abdomin would be painful? lol). That being said , I was up and walking around all night and day at the hospital, going above and beyond what that doctor ordered . I was paired up in a room with a woman who had had gastric bypass 4 days before my surgery and the pain she was in and her inability to move kept me motivated. I could see she was in too much pain to m…

Wish I would have discovered this site 2 years ago! March 21 will be 2 years for my band. I was 10 pounds from my goal weight November 2011- 7 months after surgery and then I think I hit a psychological wall of fear. The initial weight seem to come off without much effort. Great yes but not. Had many compliments then started hearing you are not looking healthy, you are getting to thin to having my first bad experience with an overfill. The overfill was a horrible experience and I thought it would get better but waited 2 weeks to decide something is wrong. Two things happened- they removed all the Fluid and I was afraid to eat solids for fear of becoming stuck or in unbear…

Hi guys!! I'm so excited to finally be on this journey and "meet" everyone! My name is Kim, I'm 37 years old, married with 3 teenagers (ouch!!). I haven't been overweight ALL of my life, but I was always the "thickest" friend in my group. BUT...I was also the only athlete in my group, so I was always in shape physically and had lots if muscle. In high school I was 5'6-5'7 and weighed 165 (ish). Last week at my initial consult I was 5'4 1/2 and weighed nearly 260 lbs....ohhhh mannnn did THAT sting I gave birth to twin boys in 1995 and weighed 218 the day I delivered. Surprisingly, less than 2 years later I gave birth to my daughter (oopsie!!). So, I found myself 21 …

I was sleeved on March 5th at approx 0800. My journey started a few years ago. I started tossing the idea of bariatric surgery around when I kept gaining and gaining weight. My dr kept doing test to see if there was a reason, and adding meds to my regimen because I was being diagnosed with different things. I talked to my dr about it and went through the initial seminar that the local bariatric surgeon has. That's as far as I went that time. I met my wife and realized that I wanted to be healthy. I wanted to be around for her and my children. Her and I talked and she pushed me to go back to the dr and start the process again. I am a paramedic for the city w…

I had my surgery almost 10 months ago. Will be on the 16th. When I started my journey I weighed 390 pounds. When I weighed in yesterday, 245 pounds!!! I feel amazing! I never thought I would ever be back to this size. It is wonderful to go into a normal store( like Walmart) and buy clothes off the rack. I used to buy through a magazine. I still lose about 2 pounds a week.

My name is Terry. I am 53 yrs old. I have been overweight since the birth of my twins, 26 yrs ago. I gained even more weight with my second pregnancy. I tried WW and lost 50 lbs, but gained it back, and then some. I tried Atkins and lost seventy 75 lbs, and gained it all back. I spent thousands on Optifast, lost 80 lbs, and gained it all back. I was so sure that I would keep off the weight after Optifast that I donated all my old clothes. I bought a whole new beautiful wardrobe and I felt so good! But the pounds have come back over the last 3yrs. I have had to pack up my pretty wardrobe and buy new fat clothes for my job in a bank. I have knee pain, lower back pa…

Hello, My name is Jennifer and I am just starting on this journey. I am 46 years old and have been battling my weight for years. I have done many different diets and can lose some of the weight but I always end up gaining it back. I now have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and joint pain. So after doing a lot of research and soul searching, I decided that having the sleeve done was the best choice for me. I had my first doctor visit on Monday. I qualify for the surgery because of my co-morbidities. I will end up paying about $2000 out of pocket. I have a few hoops to jump through first...six months of medically supervised weight loss, a psych evaluation, a…

Greetings All, I have been scouring this site since before surgery for real experiences and first hand info so I thought it time to to join!! I am 7 days post op and feeling oh so much better than earlier in the week! Compared to some of the other posts I feel that I have had a fairly easy go of it....no nausea/vomiting, no shoulder pain, unpleasant but tolerable tummy and incision pain....Don't get me wrong....days 3-6 were not fun but I definitely feel that I have turned the corner. I have been very surprised by how hungry I have actually felt given that everyone at the support group I attended said they were never hungry. I am assuming this comes once you can put…

So I fell that its time to update my progress since my last entry. The pain is minimal from the ags and the incisions. dull stings and what feels like joint pain in the left shoulder. No I am not having a heart attack, no shortness of breath, sweating, difficulty breathing, etc.( for the medical folks out there). I was out and about most of the day. can I over do it? thoughts. So how do I get my 64oz of Fluid in a day? I'm taking in about about 48oz by bedtime. should I be taking bigger gulps? Should I be forcing fluids on a time schedule? What are your thoughts on the subject? Sooooooooo, this was not in the brochure. 1. Commercials. Have you all noticed that T…

I like many of you have had a terrible time with my weight loss. Some diets worked awesome and then boom the weight comes back. I'd bet that we all know this side of the story so I'll spare you. I am married to the absolute best wife ever. We drive each other crazy but I know deep in my heart that she will be there forever with me and I am fortunate for that. I have always been involved in volunteer Fire/EMS for the past 17 years and always loved helping people. In fact I used to love hearing others say "how do you move so good for a big guy"? I always got a little winded but never felt that I couldn't perform the position. After the years went on I started feeling …

Good evening everyone! Just introducing myself here, my name is Yvonne. I'm 31 years old, married, no children. I enjoy computers, video games, painting/sketching, aquariums (saltwater & freshwater), my 2 cats, and many other things. I've been obese for a very, very long time. I was a chubby kid and a fat teenager, transitioned into morbidly obese in my early 20's. Of course I've always had issues with self-esteem, so with that I never really had the desire to lose weight. That changed of course when I met and married my husband, I started becoming frustrated with how my weight effected our relationship and what it meant years down the line. I decided I want…

Less than 8 Months! I am over the moon excited! It is so hard to comprehend that in less than a year I have made it this far, even though I have so much more to lose, it is a sure sign I am going to get there no matter how long it takes! Okay, How I did this you may wonder? I do what works for me! I track my food daily (no matter what), eating no more than a cup of food per meal and exercising. I am a firm believer in and have been on this thread about 'doing what works for you'. Finding a solution through trial and error is the way we learn, from mistakes. That is pretty much how it functions in the 'real' world. Many bandsters may disagree because they think 'their…

Hi everyone, I love reading all about your journeys and experiences. I went into surgery Monday morning at 9, my weight was 309. I did this surgery at a day surgery center and was released home at 4 PM. Dr. Tersigni was my surgeon. I went home with a JP drain and SL. On the day of the surgery I received 3 liters of fluid, Tuesday I returned to the clinic and received 2 more liters of fluid for some much needed rehydration, I also was able to get my IV and JP taken out. Wednesday I went in for a quick check up with the surgeon and a "weigh in", because of all the fluids my weight was 319. I have been doing really well, walking every 1-2 hours, drinking about 2 ounces of m…
