POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by aberry,

I’m really struggling with things right now. I’ll be two weeks post op on Monday. I have my appt on Tuesday. Everything tastes so bad. It makes me sick. Like, actually eating is fine. My stomach doesn’t get upset, it doesn’t hurt, nothing like that. But it tastes so bad that I don’t want to eat anything. Is mental nausea a thing? I don’t get sick sick, but I’m still very repulsed by it. I’ve tried soooo many things and it all tastes awful. Various soups/broths, yogurt flavors, protein shakes, flavored water w/unflavored protein, pudding, jello... I force myself to drink one protein drink and a greek yogurt cup every day. Although, that’s even a struggle. So I’m averaging …

I have a husband and one pre teen daughter. She’s still on break until Jan 5, and both of them were planning on coming to hospital with me and sticking around until I’m in a room. Hospital already said she was allowed in pre op & post op areas. I just don’t want them to have to stick around all that time when they could be hitting up fun things in the city. Will I want them there pre op? What about post op? Should they just come back to the hospital when I’m settled into a room? My husband keeps insisting they are staying, but I’m like why sit around and be bored for hours on end?

Hi all, So, I am officially three weeks out on Wednesday. Yay! Really happy with results so far, but I am terribly nauseated almost all day since about 5 days out. It’s making it hard to eat. Sometimes I force myself, but other times I just choose not to because the thought alone makes me sick to my stomach. I’m also really sensitive to smells now which is making it worse. At my one week post-op appt, the doctor said to try to push through it and use anti-nausea meds as a last resort. Should this nausea be over by now? Am I being a big baby about it? What have you all experienced and done to get rid of it? I’m so ready for it to end. I’m trying to meet water and protein …

  5. Okay I know it's a little gross, but a few hours ago I ate some chicken (I made sure to chew really really well and I only had about two small bites) because I've been trying to introduce soft foods into my diet. Well it had a little bit of spice in it and since then, I've been having a really giant and painful burning sensation all throughout my esophagus and chest. I've been spitting out a lot of extra mucus and burping a bunch. Just a few minutes ago, I noticed some black, thick, mucus come up during my burping/spitting/gagging and there's quite a bit of it now. They are like small little globs and are kind of blackish-brownish. I just gagged up a really big glob …

Hi guys, My surgery was on 12/28 and I am nervous that I’m not eating enough. I have to force myself to drink a protein shake a day. Should I be eating more? My surgeon said for the first week she wants me to at least drink one protein shake to keep up my muscle. Is this normal for me not wanting to eat anything?

I had my surgery done in June 2012 so I'm over 5 years out. Although I wish I had lost more than I did, I have maintained this weight within 8-10 pounds for over 5 yrs so I am thrilled with that. In the beginning, I learned quickly that overeating at one sitting will create a disaster, mainly cold clammy sweats followed by need to vomit. That's still pretty true today. Now the last year, I have a new symptom and I need to know if anyone else has this. Every morning after introducing any liquids : coffee or water, within 1 hours I have the worst dumping imaginable - to the point where I can't leave the house for at least an hour after it starts. Mostly just huge am…

Hi, I was sleeved 12/28 and my nut and surgeon said the first week i will be on clear liquids including jello. I tried some 3 days after my surgery and had a small pain under my left breast bone every time I take small bites. I tried it again tonight on day 5 post op and felt the same pain. Is this normal? Will this go away? is it because its sort of cold? Anything helps, i'm just worried. Thanks!

Does anyone else ever feel like you just can’t get enough water in? I’m 2 1/2 months post op RNY and definitely getting in at least 64 oz of water every day, but some days I feel like I could chug water all day long and it still wouldn’t be enough. I struggle to get protein in on those days because I’m drinking so much, which I know isn’t good.

My name is Shanta’ and I am actually sending this message on behalf of my mother Anna who has gastric bypass surgery yesterday. I encouraged her to join a support group to help her through this process and I came across this forum. As I mentioned she had gastric bypass surgery and she’s having a hard time. I’ve seen several posts on here where people did well and didn’t have a lot of pain at all afterwards. She seems to be the opposite and is quite a bit of pain. She has back problems so laying immobile in the bed doesn’t help. She didn’t get her pain meds until a few hours after surgery because the pharmacy had to wait to confirm it so the pain caught up with her. I want…

My husband and I both had surgery November 15 so we are seven weeks post op. Things have been going smoothly, about as expected. We are both hitting water/protein goals and losing steadily. However, something weird has started and I’m wondering if anyone else has experience with this. My husband (26yr) came home from work yesterday and had an emotional breakdown. Full on ‘crying, doomsday outlook, all hope is lost’ breakdown. My hubby isn’t the crying type, in fact, it’s pretty difficult to get an emotional response out of him at all, ever. So naturally, it kinda freaked me out. I started quizzing him with questions to try and find out where this is coming from but h…

  15. I am going to have to really think about how much (little!) I am eating when I am in the grocery store and adjust the volume of food that I buy. Last week I bought eggs, a few pounds of chicken, a couple of sweet potatoes, and maybe three zucchini. I was worried that it wouldn't be enough for the week. Now I am whipping up soup and purees to freeze because there is no way I can get through it when a bite or three of something fills me up. Hi! I’ve lurked for a week or now. I finally got the courage to post. I have a question about the eating phases that you all were told to follow. My SD was on 12/14. I am on full liquid diet for a total of five weeks (protein shakes, blended soups, oatmeal, yogurt, SF jello, SF popsicles, applesauce, etc. ) all only 1/4 cup at a time. I’m concerned that I will begin solid foods without a real transition to solids. Also, I am having a hard time with drinking water, protein shakes and eating. It’s a juggling mess right now. Can’t get it all in. What were you told to eat and when? Do you have any sample schedules that you can share?

I'm getting concerned...shouldn't there be some kind of activity? I'm also having a hard time with my Fluid intake. I must drink about 20 to 30 oz of fluids a day. This includes my Water, Protein, Soup, cream of wheat and lots and lots of sugar free popscicles. Did I mention I eat tons of popscicles?!?! Anyone experience something similar?

I’ve also noticed that I do not wait the complete 30 minutes to drink after eating... bad habits seem to linger. Since I’ve noticed these issues today I need to stop these habits!! Lasted about 45 minutes. Second was tonight. I had a few bites of a turkey burger. Just the party and again, awful chest pains and burping. No nausea but I almost feel when I burp that I may throw up. Does anyone know what this is? Anyone experience it too? I don’t think I’m eating to fast so wondering if the foods don’t agree or it’s to dense.

  23. Had an interesting talk with my dietitian today. She is hell bent that we work up to 1000-1200 calories per day as soon as possible. I'm on week two...she doesn't expect me to get there until week five or so, but encourages me to try. I asked, Why not take advantage of the natural desire to eat fewer calories and....you know....lose a little more weight? And what she said kinda floored me. She said that prolonged low calorie diets will switch your metabolism to a starvation mode where body processes are slowed, energy is conserved and *gasp* YOU STOP LOSING WEIGHT. Worse, you can lower your metabolic set point to sluggish starvation levels. She goe…

So excited for this but I am a bit nervous because I've been having no trouble with restriction in regards to my water. I don't feel the liquids make me full, it's just I have no hunger whatsoever(except mental, but I know eating can seriously hurt me so luckily the mental hunger has been minimal.) I'm nervous that this means my sleeve is not going to work properly? Well, I had gastric bypass on 12/20/2017. I am absolutely amazed at how easy my recovery has been. I was expecting much worse and I almost wonder if my surgeon just made incisions and didn't do anything, LOL. In all seriousness, I am very fortunate and happy to be doing so well. Today is 10 days post-op and I have a question about what I am eating. So my surgeon told me to start with 64 oz of liquids and 50 g of protein a day. Once I could get that down I could move on to plain yogurt, cottage cheese, and applesauce. So I started yogurt and applesauce 3 days out with no issue, then added cottage cheese 4 days out (only a small amount). Then once I could eat about a…

So I had to call the doctor this morning because my incisions were itching like crazy. When I woke up this morning the area around each incision was hot swollen red and itching like crazy. With my luck it’s probably a reaction to the glue they used (I’m 1 week post-op). The nurse suggested Hydrocortisone crime around the incision so as not to loosen the glue. That has done nothing. I’ve applied it 4 times today and still can’t stop itching and the swelling won’t go down. Of course tomorrow is Saturday so I plan on calling the “on-call” doctor. However, just wondering if something similar had happened to anyone else? I honestly don’t think something is terribly wrong oth…

I have constant pain around my incision and over to the right side. It’s extremely painful and very sensitive to touch. Is it possible to get an infection under my incision 12 weeks later from just the incision, that seems completely healed on the outside? Has anyone had similar problems? The other night I had alcohol for the first time since my surgery (very little, yes I'm allowed per my surgeon, no I'm not an alcoholic) And realized I had no idea what the hell to drink. Most drinks have carbonation and extra/excess sugar or are mixed with **** I don't need. What are the best options for a post sleeve patient to drink responsibly? I really don't drink often enough to where it'll be a huge issue, but I figure any opportunity to improve is always a good one. I'm sure there's old threads on this, but I mostly just found ones centered on when/how much rather than drink selection

Don't go 5 hours without eating, you will eat too much ! I have been taken off all the diabetes medication, (Yay, that was a huge motivator for this whole process), and am monitoring my blood pressure.
