POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by aberry,

Is Emergen-C OK to have? I know it’s “fizzy,” but the fizz dissipates really, really quickly. 5’6” 25 yo SW: 256 CW: 236.9 *almost 3 weeks post op*

  2. Just started a few days ago. Felt overly full after eating. The feeling lasted a while then finally subsided. Saturday night it came back, but with tenderness and pain to the touch. I feel like I can't eat much and I'm constantly bloated. Any thoughts? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

I had my surgery March 2016, and after 1.5 years I gained back the 50 pounds I lost and am now at my weight before surgery (230, 5 ft 4 around 40 BMI). My lowest was only 185 from 240. I believe the first surgery pouch wasn't small enough and I do have gastric re-flux occasionally. I started gaining after 6 months - a year. I will admit after 6 months, I was not exercising as much (went from cardio every day for an hour, to only 3x a week), and I was more lenient with food adding in some carbs whereas I was only eating protein and veggies ~1,000 calories daily to ~1,200-1,500. I have an appointment with a new doctor in a few weeks to go over my options, but I just want to…

Hey all, first post. I’m a little down in the dumps today. I’m officially into my third week after surgery and while the first week I lost 8 pounds last week I only lost one! I’m super frustrated as I’ve been following every direction, not exceeding 700 calories a day, walking every day, following the rules. My only slip up was drinking some hot chocolate made with skim milk. Why would my loss stall like this? My husband says I’m crazy since I’m already 23 lbs down, but I just thought that the weight loss at the beginning was super fast. Now I’m afraid to add anything to my diet!

I was sitting on the sofa yesterday when all of a sudden my heart went crazy. I took my pulse at it was at 173. I call my GP since my surgeon is 4 hours away any they got me right in. They did an EKG and found that my heart had gone into A Fib. After getting sent to the ER they said they were going to have to shock me back into rhythm. Just as they were about to knock me out and shock me I went back into normal sinus rhythm. They said since I has never had this issue before it could have been caused from the stress of surgery and my new diet. Has anyone else had this issue. I think it was just a fluke and hope it stays away...

  6. Had a sleeve 5 weeks ago, since then every night I wake up with an incredibly dry mouth/tongue. So bad to the point that it's really uncomfortable and I think is disrupting my sleep. I'm talking my tongue is bone dry and almost scaly/crusty to the touch when I get up. Is this relatively common, anyone have any fricken idea what it could be?

I had my surgery last Thursday, everything has been going really smooth, I feel like I am ready to eat foods but sticking with liquid diet. Wednesday around 6pm, I nibbled at a tiny pecan, I spit it all out and washed out my mouth. Now I can't sleep, I feel like my stomach is tight and it keeps rumbling, did I just mess my stomach up?

I’m debating whether to purchase a scale or not. I haven’t had one for years. I always judged my size by how my clothes fit. I am two weeks out of surgery, had mine Dec 5, the day after my birthday. I am feeling great, tire quickly. Does everyone own a scale and should I get one?

So I know I'm not alone in having bowel movement changes post surgery and I can't really talk about the embarrassing things that have happened because of this with other people who haven't had the surgery. So on to the TMI situation. Nearly every month right before I get my period I have a BM that clogs the toilet at work. Today it happened and I was panicking because the toilet would not flush. I had to get creative to actually fix it. If this happened once and never again, it wouldn't be a huge deal, but it is has happened, specifically at work, three or four times already. Does anyone else have embarrassing issues with BMs after they have surgery?

I am going to start working out on my elliptical at home and I just was curious how much should I be working out a day? Is 45 min to an hour enough or should I strive for more as I work my way towards a healthier me? I realize I will most likely only be able to work out for 20 - 30 min to start but what should my goal end up being per day?

  14. I originally had gastric sleeve 5/20/14, HW 250. I had to do a conversion to RNY 11/1/17. My last weigh in was 196lbs. At one month post op I was down to 176lbs, mostly due to the liquid diet. I haven't budged from that number in two weeks and it was there for a week before the weigh in. I'm just wondering if it's a stall or if it's just smaller amounts coming off slower because it's my second go round? Any ideas?

My team at work is very... food-centric. I knew this before, and I've been doing a phenomenal job sticking to only eating what I bring. I'm almost four weeks post-op, and I didn't tell the majority of people at work (except my bosses), as I really feel like its no one else's business. But I knew it would happen sooner than later... there's a potluck scheduled for next week! Any ideas on what I can bring that I'll be able to eat but that everyone else also might enjoy? Ultimately, what I don't want is a bunch of questions about why I'm not consuming the way I used to or bringing something that everyone else won't enjoy... help!

The glitz of Victoria's page is very tempting. And as I'm dropping pounds even more so. What I'm discovering is that along with the eating I also would buy expensive lounge clothing to make myself feel better. Yea I paid off my bill each month but the interest rate was higher than heck and now I'm falling out of 3-year-old yoga pants and re-sewing holes for the 4th time because it's the only clothing I've worn for the last 4 1/2 years. Scratch that for my entire adult life thus far it's been lounge clothes. I like comfortable clothing that looks nice, not an issue. I'm on the autism spectrum so perhaps I should err on the side of grace for myself, but when you don't…

So today I was able to start the puree stage. I was sleeved 11/15. Basically since I was sleeve to my stomach is handling everything very well I have always eaten a little bit ahead of plan by about a week but I noticed that being 4 weeks out the weight loss has stopped and I think it's because I'm being too lenient with my eating. I haven't been logging or counting calories or anything like I'm supposed to. I have my log book out now and my journal and tomorrow I am going to start religiously writing down what I'm eating and tracking my carbs and my calories and my sugars. I'm two days away from being 4 week post-op on my band. My doc put me from liquids straight back to solids after 6 days. I haven't had one bit of problems with that - nothing seems to bother me or be uncomfortable. Well, I lie - I've had one incident where I was eating a hard-boiled egg and it felt like it got stuck. It was super painful, but quickly rectified with water. Otherwise though, no nausea, no vomiting, no pain, etc. I've been good on my diet, as prescribed by my surgeon. No liquid calorie intake (only solids), only eating when hungry, no carbs (no rice, pasta, bread or potatoes), and trying really hard not to drink while eating or immediately afterward. …

Hello all, trying something new here.. Little history about me... I had lap band almost 10 years ago. It was a love hate relationship! I have horrible drainage so it didn't work for me. Either to tight or to loose. Last week I had the lap band out and received the sleeve all at the same time. Recovery has been pretty good. Pain is better but this liquid diet is causing some major emotions. I am getting my required 64oz of Water in, or more, and the 3 shakes a day. I will have some broth in between to change up the taste some. Today I woke up and hit a wall! Very weak and crazy emotional. Is this the norm? Just wanted to reach out and see if this…

I was covered in blood..gown from breast down, bed had to be removed a new one brought in, floor mopped. It was bad. The nurses put a gauze and tape over it. The bleeding stopped. But evidently it bleed under the skin, no bruising. I was having considerable pain they said it was gas. 9 days later at post op appt. Dr. Said he thought it was muscle spasm which kinds stood to reason with how I felt. Ordered a CT scan for Monday. Scan showed softball size hematoma. Anyone have had experience with this? Hi there! I had my gastric sleeve procedure on 10/30. I lost 10 lbs before the procedure and 10 lbs following it (first 2-3 days). It's been over 5 weeks and I haven't lost a single pound. I don't exercise, get about 500-600 calories a day. Not enough Water though. But I've attempted fixing all that and still nothing. I'm hypothyroid and insulin resistant. Have you any words of advice for me? I'm going crazy here. The doctor's office wants me to wait until next week to "look over the diet". That is not going to help. I've been following the diet. Just hasn't worked.

  42. Good morning! I had my 2 week post-op appointment on Tuesday. My incisions are healed and I had lost about 15 lbs since my pre-op appointment. During the first week and a half my weigh loss seemed fairly consistant on a daily basis. Then all of a sudden nothing. I haven't lost anything in 5 days! Has anyone else had a similar experience? I was getting so excited seeing the numbers drop on a daily basis that this feels like an emotional letdown. I just switched to pureed foods and have been logging what I eat in my attempt to make the protein numbers (60-80g). I am eating on average 500-600 calories a day.

I eat, because I need to eat but I just don't want to and I'm bored silly with it. It is a struggle to stay interested in getting it done. I'm tired. My sex drive has not increased (as promised and you know who you are out there!!!) Over easy egg, 1/4 piece of rye toast. A cheese stick. 1/3 cup cottage cheese. 2 slices of lean ham. 2 oz of baked chicken with broth and a couple carrot rounds and a teaspoon of peas. And it's a struggle. Isopure half a bottle, lots of crystal light. And weight loss is crawling like a 100 year old three legged tortoise. (Yes this is somewhat a prohibition pity-party)

  45. I think I know the answer to this, but just checking with the "experts". Early on I was much more militant about separating my eating and drinking. Lately I find myself occasionally taking a sip or two of liquids especially if it's something that is (too) dry. I assume this is just as bad of an idea as it was shortly after surgery? That it's a bad habit that can lead onto the slippery slope? Just checking.
