Hi, I am a military wife with two boys who is divorced from my husband after 22 years of marriage. My highest weight was 298 and it stayed there for years. It was a HUGE contributing factor to the demise of my marriage. When I realized my marriage was in trouble I started changing my diet habits, exercising and making better choices. No matter what I did the weight just eeked off. Right when I started this my doctor told me I was diabetic. I was not going to take medicine. She encouraged me to go into the bariatric program to get my health under control. I resisted for a short while then I proceeded to enter the program. Even when I went to orientation I was NOT sure this was the way I wanted to do it. At my hospital it is typically a 3 month time frame to surgery. I went at my own pace. Drug my feet making appointments and taking tests while I spoke to everyone I could and did all the research I could on bariatric surgery. During my 2 year journey I lost 50 lbs on my own. I know that is good and your probably asking why would I do surgery after having success on my own. Two reasons. First, I started doing damage to my knees from walking and exercising with my heavy load to bear. Second, at my age, I couldn't wait many more years to get my sugar down with my weight. I am confident now in my decision to have gastric sleeve surgery. What started as a way to keep my marriage and get my sugar down has turned into a mission to be healthy, love myself and enjoy life's activities that I couldn't at almost 300 pounds.
update: After 3 years and 75lbs lost, 20lbs regained I had to undergo a revision to RNY for acid reflux and fix a hiatal hernia. My pre surgery weight this time was 196 and 6 weeks out I have stayed at 176 for several weeks now. The journey this time is not the same. I'm not seeing drastic results, I already had restriction so not a lot has changed there. I'm trying to stay motivated to lose more and not waste this opportunity to get even healthier than I was before.
