POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by confusedturtle3,

I got my sleeve yesterday and had the worst time trying to keep down the ice chips. I was kept on anti nausea meds the whole time. When I was released today I had to drink & keep down 1 oz of protein and 3 oz of clears per hour for 3 consecutive hours. I nailed it right away and was sent home. Now that the anti nausea has worn off I can’t keep anything down. Is this normal? What do I do? Now I wish I would’ve stayed a day more like my surgery buddy did [emoji53] Have a great day! Amanda [emoji16] HW 248 CW 241 SW ? Surgery Date: 11/21/2017. Goal weight 150’ish ??

  2. I am 6 month post-op my sleeve surgery, within the last two weeks (I would say) every time I eat I get pain in my stomach, today is the worse it starts I above my belly button and moves over to the right side. As I am typing this the pain is getting worse (much more noticeable). I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if it could be appendicitis. Not sure if after having the sleeve done if your appendix can go bad. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just had my sleeve done on Monday 11/20...just 3 days ago. I am having zero trouble drinking fluids. Why? I was expecting it to be an issue since it is such a common thing mentioned on the boards. It actually freaks me out a little that something is wrong. The swallow study looked good the morning after surgery and my Surgeon told me the pouch is about the diameter of a dime. I saw images and yes, my stomach looked like a small worm. In addition, I have almost no pain and thry even sent me home after 24 hours (instead of the planned 48) because i was doing great! Anyone else recover really easily?

I was sleeved 11/13/17. I feel like I have something stuck in my throat! I started feeling this way last night when I took my last vitamin before I went to bed, and woke up feeling like it was still there. It's now 8:25pm and I STILL feel like something is there. Whenever I drink, I feel like it kinda goes down.. but then, nope, the feeling comes back! HELP!... is this feeling normal?

I'm 3 weeks post op, doing mushies now, and I'm afraid I'm able to eat too much. Everyone here says at this point they either have no hunger, or get full after a couple spoonfuls. I'm rarely feel full and feel hungry every couple hours. I have yet to feel any restriction at all. I make myself stop eating after 3ish ounces just so I don't over eat. My nutritionist tells me that it's basically impossible and I should be eating 1/4 cup of food 3 times a day and I'll be fine but that's not a reality. Maybe I just healed too quickly, but if I only eat 1/4 cup per meal I'm literally starving over the day. I'm eating like 2-4 oz. every 3 hours. I'm on a PPI and getting in 80-100…

Whats the solution to gain muscle weight and some fat to reach the normal weight and yeah i was 129kilos before and now im 79 kgs

So up until a couple of days ago, I was able to eat my foods and drink my liquids without any issues. Now, I can’t drink or eat anything without the feeling to throw it all up. I am now doing this thing where I “fake” throw up which is just me constantly dry heaving and gagging for about 30 minutes straight. I am a little over a month out from surgery so I have no idea why this is happening now. Has anyone experienced this or is currently having this issue? Because I honestly do not know what to do!!

So how many of you are Dudley Doo-Right overachievers and want to see if tracking things makes you more accountable? I already track in MFP, but there's another board which shall remain nameless, that has these daily menu threads and I find them infinitely helpful to see what others are eating, or to have someone spot something in another's menu that might cause them issues with loss or maintenance. Hi all: I am three weeks out from surgery, and I was wondering if there are any items or foods that I should get before surgery to be prepared for the post-op process? I wondered specifically if a blender or food processor is recommended. I watched a YouTub video where a woman made shot-sized protein puddings so she would have them on hand when she got home from the hospital. Has anyone meal prepped before surgery? I do have another random question. I am seeing in a lot of the YouTube videos that people are coming home with drain tubes or have drains in the hospital. Is that something I will have? I am nervous about that since I do not do well with blood and gut…

I had my vsg surgery on 11/20/17. It is now 11/24/17 and I haven’t been able to keep one thing down since surgery. Instantly started throwing up after trying first couple sips of room temp water and I’m dry heaving/throwing up after everything else I’ve tried. Today is my 2nd day in a row to ER thinking I might die. I’ve been admitting and am NPO until tomorrow morning. Anyone have any experience with this? Please tell me this will pass.

Does anyone ever get super massive stomach cramps? I don't get dizzy or throw up just really intense stomach cramps. I thought it might have been because I ate half a flour tortilla the other day that's when they started. However when I woke up this morning I was fine I was able to eat regularly again with no pain... that was until tonight I had a poke Bowl no rice Just Fish, avocado, edamame, seaweed salad and regular salad greens under that. I haven't noticed that at all.. I'm still always hungry and I can take in as much liquid as I want. It doesn't seem like my stomach is smaller.. I have been sitting here reading lots of posts and have gotten myself freaked out... 1st thing is that I haven't lost any weight yet, today was day 5 post op, my husband says my body is still swollen and adjusting but I would like to see the scale move. 2nd thing is I am a little worried that I am overeating. My nutritionist gave me a goal of 100 g of protein and I am hitting that. I am not hungry, I sip most of the day. So after about 6-7 weeks, I’m finally on my “ stall”.. now I didn’t have a 3 wk stall. Down about 43lbs and 7 lbs away from the 100’s! However I’ve only lost about 1-2 lbs the last week or two.. major slow down since I’m so early out from surgery. I did increase my calories drastically going from puréed to solids but still not enough to plateau. I heard these are normal? How long do these usually last? Anyone experience a nice drop again from a stall?? Just need to talk this out so I’m not feeling bad that I’ll stay at this weight since I’m not on the heavier side of gastric bypass patients as my doc told me....

  32. I know chewing your food to a complete puree is a key action post op with the sleeve. Does this get better with time (ie in 5 years will I need to chew every bite 20-30 times) Taking your time I'm fine with, no liquids and that also is pretty easy to do. But worrying about food getting lodged or making me vomit for a long time is kind of a downer. Just wondering how it looks down the road

Hi, folks! I'm still in pre-surgery land, but I've been researching post-op foods and what to expect. In Nashville, where I live, there's a company, iRevive, that offers IV fluids with vitamins and other additives for about $130/1 liter. From what I understand, you can make an appointment (or not) and just show up to have an IV drip put in.... Before I ever considered having a gastric sleeve op, I thought the idea was nuts. But now, I'm wondering whether that'd be a decent way to avoid dehydration during the first couple of weeks/months. Any thoughts on this? Have you used a service like this? It isn't cheap, but it might be cheaper than an ER visit. - tBot

She said no and that she would only eat a small amount of food that was placed on the table (we were eating family style) and that would be sufficient. I had a hard time coming out on anesthesia and my blood pressure dropped pretty low, but everything is back to normal now. My incisions are by far the most painful part, and getting in and out of bed is really not fun. I’ll be more glad I did this in a few weeks when I’m not as exhausted and in pain.
