POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. I've been meaning to share since I got home from my 10/27/17 surgery and just keep forgetting - until now! My hospital is AWESOME - they give you a 'Bari-Bear' for stomach support after surgery! They gave him to me while I was getting prepped for surgery, and he's the cutest thing! He's not a normal teddy bear though. He is very firm, and has more of a flat body shape than rounded. He's perfect to hold against your tummy when coughing, moving, walking, etc after surgery. I don't really need Barry (that's his name haha) very much now that I'm about 3wks out from surgery, but I do still keep him in bed for a little extra support when I sleep on my side. Did anyone…

Can anyone tell me where to find the calendar app where it shows a calendar year and how many pounds were lost each month in big numbers over the month? I see it on Instagram ALL THE TIME and I can't find what it's called. Thanks!

I had sleeve surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago. I’ve been back on birth control for about five days. I’m getting terrible cramping in my lower abdomen. It could be gas but it feels more like menstrual cramps. Anyone experience this and does anyone have a remedy. I’m really doubled over at some points. Hurts so much that I’m sweating

Hi guys just wanted to check some symptoms at 2 days post op My chest is probably the worst pain, from the gas they used in surgery, they've told me once i start walking around it'll go away but its still slightly there and still very uncomfortable. Im finding it painful to drink water. My stomach is super swollen and I've vomited a few times is this all pretty normal?

I had my surgery in June. I’ve been doing great, but lately all I want to do is eat. I know holidays/this time of year is always hard. A lot of emotional eating. Please pray for me. I have gained 1 pound back and so afraid I will gain more.

I had gastric sleeve procedure on 11/18/17, so it's been one year since my surgery. For the last few days, I've had a sensation at the bottom of my throat of fullness, almost like food or something is stuck far down my throat. Has anyone else experienced this sensation or know what it is? I do take 40 mg of Protonix for GERD which I started 2 weeks post-op, and I'm also taking 150 mg of Ranitidine a day. However, this sensation doesn't feel like the burning sensation I usually experience with GERD. I can't imagine that food or anything of that nature is actually stuck though since I don't have any vomiting and water / saliva would have washed it away. Any…

Today I'm 6 weeks post op. I went out with my boy that's in from Tampa to have some drinks/food for happy hour. We used to drink like maniacs. Shot after shot... Sooo I had 2 shots and a bloody Mary total at the 4 bars we went too. Ordered a crab cake . But Yea I'm home now and feel pretty good and proud of myself... the old Kenny would still be out getting it on.. I had enough of that life I wanted it too be over. How did everybody deal with drinking once they started again. After they're VSG surgery ? Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm having trouble finding a good Protein Powder. I tried Bariatric Fusion and found it gross (especially the chicken soup). Premier Protein is just way too sweet for me. The Caramel is revolting, and the Banana and Cream is drinkable but soooo sweet. Everyone says Unjury is the best. If I don't like Bariatric Fusion or Premier Protein will I like Unjury? Am I doomed to find all Protein shakes undrinkable? Everyone keeps saying how great Premier Protein caramel is and I really find it disgusting.

Feeling much better, been eating baked chicken or yogurt and water. I’m gonna say it’s normal to have one of those days when u wanna cheat, This is new to me but I’ll make it through. I feel like I’m getting head hunger a lot so I usually just drink water or finish my work. Is it normal to no feel restriction tho, I usually stop myself so I don’t feel uncomfortable.

The guidelines I was given say during the mushy stage I should eat max 1/4 cup of food 4 times a day. That's like 4ish dry ounces of food a day. That seems really really low. Like impossible to hit any type of nutritional goals type of low. Any thoughts? I know I should ask my NUT but she is not very helpful. Basically just says stick to the sheet (and buy the products on it obviously), and doesn't really seem to know too much of the details of how bariatric surgery actually works.

  16. I am 5'2" and had surgery on Halloween, Oct 31st. Surgery Weight was 211 and am currently at 202 for the last four days. I'm two weeks out and thought I'd have at least the weight loss I experienced while on the pre-diet (13 pounds) I have started a pureed stage and am kind of forcing myself to eat since I'm really just not hungry. Also, when I do eat I am having problems distinguishing when I am full- seems like I can't tell until I've taken that last spoonful that makes me hurt and feel full and bloated. And I stay that way for quite a long time- feel full overnight even and just dont want to eat, not even hungry when I wake up. I do wake up with energy, Im …

I’m not allowed to start puréed till 11/27... but I’m so hungry I’m waking up in the middle of the night starving. I’m on Zantac so u don’t think it’s acid or anything. I’m so far 24 days of liquids at this time. I’m ready for food but afraid to eat ahead of schedule.

  21. Well, I had my sleeve done yesterday, and I have this terrible pain, I think is gas. It radiates pain into my shoulders and make breathing difficult, especially trying to take a deep breath. I hope it doesn't last for too long !! Anybody else experience this??

  22. I had surgery last week on the 22nd and every since I've had this pain in my left leg. Its not my whole leg either just on the side of my thigh. I walk as much as I can and after about 15 to 20 minutes its starts, these spasms start happening. My mother had to drive me home one day because it was so bad! Now, I know everyone is going to tell me to go to the doctor, well the FNP at CCS told me she has never heard of this happening and to just keep walking. And my primary doctor's appointment isn't until the end of next month, I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this? Is this a side effect of the anesthesia?

  23. Hi , I feel like I'm doing it all wrong. Mine was done at a surgery center, sent home in a couple hours and was told i can do the funnel diet for the first two weeks. I go to therapy weekly and group every other week. I also am on medication for my mental illness. All I want to do is eat. I don't drink soda or alcohol. I get around 50-60 grams of protein a day. The rest is sugar and carbs. I feel so hopeless and like I've let everyone down. I can eat a whole box of cookies in an evening. I try to drink calorie-free things. I do well for a couple days and just do soft foods and track my calories and get protein, then I get depressed and overeat. I don't w…

It has been 15 days since I had my sleeve. At first I was happy with the weight loss, but it has been a week since I have lost anything and actually i have gained 2 pounds. Everyone I know that had this surgery said the weight just melts off of you but I am not seeing this... am i doing something wrong? Also, I have found that my experience with the sleeve is vastly different than how others have experienced. For example, my surgeon told me that I would only be able to eat a bite of banana and I would be full. Well... I ate half the banana and chewed my bites up really really well but i could have kept going. I only stopped for safety concerns. I don’t seem …

I am concerned with the amount of food I am able to eat and I do not feel restricted at all. I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and a snack but I always find myself so hungry a few hrs sometimes even minutes after every meal and find myself snacking on string cheese mostly. I lost 17 pounds the first two weeks but I’ve been stuck at a stall the past week which I’m not too concerned about I am more concerned with the amount that I am eating with no restriction. So I am 6 weeks post. And I feel super normal. Like, according to my Dr. I should be still not able to eat much, not be able to handle carbs or sugars. But NOPE. I can eat whatever within reason... still get that full feeling and when eating too fast can overeat and get that gross pain feeling. Anyways, I am now capping my calorie intake to 1000 because if I don't watch it, those slider foods/grazing can definitely sneak my calories higher than that. Not that I'm complaining too much. I'm down 59lbs as of today. Which is awesome. But I am a little jealous of those who still have zero desire for food or that still have those "danger zone" foods that the stomach…

I have since gained 5 lbs. on the clear liquid diet. I’m puzzled and concerned. Did anyone else experience this? I’ve heard of stalls but not gains so close to the surgery. @Berry78 do you have any advice for me?

Those who are short (5'2-5'3 and under) and were 215lbs or less or had a BMI of 40 or less, did the weight come off slow for you? My surgeon warned me that the weight loss may be slow for me due to my weight/BMI being at the bare minimum for surgery. At first, I didn't believe it because I have had some pretty decent weight loss so far but now I can tell its starting to slow down so I am just curious what others experiences were! I went to the ER a few days ago due to abdominal pain. They did a CT scan and said I had an enlarged Spleen and my blood work showed high liver function readings. They called my Bariatric doc and he told them he was aware of the spleen being enlarged because it was when he did my sleeve back in February!!! So a few questions. 1. Shouldn’t the surgeon have told me about it after surgery? I had no clue. 2. Has anyone else had this happen? The ER dr was very concerned and not even 10 minutes after calling my bari dr she was discharging me! He told her it was not related to anything bariatric but was probably a “female” issue. However, during spring and summer I do well on liquids. Now I am getting in an average 16 oz a day, I am still getting in my food but even that is getting skimpy. So I have a milestone birthday in a few days, and everyone is offering to go out and eat. Im almost 11 months post-op, I've reached my goal weight, and I have no interest in eating out. I feel like it is a waste, and to be honest my tastes have changed. My favorite food is an egg with peppers and onions. Eating out has become a little awkward for me. I don't enjoy eating out anymore and that seems to be all anyone wants to do to celebrate things. Other than food, what do you do to celebrate? Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app
