POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Hello All, I've had my band for over a year and generally things have gone very well. But I have one issue I can't seem to find the answer for and it's this.... I can go for months doing great and then out of nowhere my band tightens and I'm barely able to get liquids down or during one incident, not at all. I wonder what seems to cause shis sudden tighenting and if it will resolve itself. Generally, I run right down to my doc and have them unfill me. But this time I am able to get liquids down, much to my band's chagrin. I'm wondering if this will resolve itself in a few days or if I should go get an unfill. I'm pretty sure I should get it unfilled but I was jus…

I had my surgery yesterday. Was in some pain until they got it under control. Was up and walking three hours after getting to my hospital room. Nurses were shocked but after I had my c section with my daughter (15 years ago) I recall the sooner I got up and walked the faster I healed. I have been eating ice chips and drinking small sips of water. Only had a couple bites of jello last night and one teaspoon of broth. I will see how breakfast goes shortly. Being removed from IV today and going to liquid medicine. Fingers crossed for a successful day. Not sure when I’m leaving it may be tomorrow or Friday. Much love to you all!!!

I am four days post op and it feels like my dry mouth is getting so much worse. When I sleep, I wake up and my mouth feels like a desert. I have been sipping fluids constantly, mostly water. Does anyone know any quick remedies to help with this because it is so uncomfortable? Sleeved 10/10/17 • HW 280 (3/1/17) • SW 259 (10/10) • GW 180 (TBD)

I noticed about 3 weeks post op that I had a very yellow bruise on the front of my left breast, about 2” from the center of my chest. It caused me concerned because I had not noticed this before. And since it was yellow, that means it was healing, and had had a worse bruise prior to it being yellow. I had not noticed a bruise on my breast, I think because I was so focused on taking care of my incisions daily. I’m wondering if this may have happened when I was in surgery. It did take the yellow bruise a good two weeks to go away, and then tonight I noticed a lump in my breast in the exact spot where the bruise was. This is really scaring me, but wondering if anyone else ha…

  6. I am 7 weeks post op and it has been so strange discovering that I can’t eat nearly the amount of foods I used to. Just had a mini vacation visiting family, so trying different foods tore up my stomach on day 3 of vacation! Spent most of the evening back and forth to the bathroom. I’ve also been having a little pain where my pouch is, and a lot of gurgling in my stomach. Not sure if it’s just my stomach getting used to new foods?? I am still getting in my 2 shakes a day, and liquid/water intake. I do still get full real quick, usually with only 1/3 or 1/2 of a small meal.

  10. For me it was the 2 wks of Liquid Dieting! It was hard not being able to chew! So what I did to over come this, I first put myself on a eating schedule. This way I was able to make sure I got my protein requirment in as well to stay satified. Next when it was my daughters turn to cook, she would graciuoly cook meats & veggies with broth & juices! Once I was able to eat solid food I had to deal with constipation & getting enough protein. The problem with getting my protein was due to the fact that I could no longer tolerate all flavors of the Preimer protein drinks! Nor can I eat cheese, all pork or some forms of beef! I can, however, Eat cottage cheese & …

It's not excruciating, more like a dull stomachache most of the time. Unless it's a protein shake or yogurt, it hurts after I eat. And I eat SLOW. And chew like a cow with cud. Plain water still hurts as well, even a sip. Is this normal? I'm happy with my loss, but so tired of hurting all the time.

I'm interested in learning how many of you had your taste buds change after surgery? I love so many different flavors, and I'm not sure how I would feel if I all of a sudden no longer like certain foods. For example, I'm thrilled that the avacado is on the list of foods to eat as it is one of my favorites. If my tastes change, I wonder if I'll be sad or relieved. On the other hand, if I no longer like the taste of cookies and other sweets, that would be pretty awesome. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using BariatricPal mobile app

Pain isn't too bad unless I throw up obviously. Did anyone experience the same thing? If so, how long did it last for you until you felt better and was able to drink stuff without it coming back up?, Sent from my SM-N910V using BariatricPal mobile app

I had my sleeve done on 10/5/17. I've been struggling with the 2 week liquid diet and have had a few things here or there but nothing real bad. I'm talking a few oyster crackers in my broth and that type of thing. This morning I am only down 2lbs since surgery. After surgery I was up about 10lbs due to all the extra fluid weight but I definitely feel like I should be down more than 2lbs. Today is the first day that I've really thought maybe this won't work for me. I have my post op appointment tomorrow and am worried about what they are going to say about my lack of weight loss. Has anyone else had this issue?

I just went to the NUT yesterday- I had sleeve done on 12/13/11- she gave me a prescription for Actigall and told me it was a necessity. I saw my Dr today and he said I should take it because there is a 30% chance of me getting gallstones if I don't. Is anybody post-op NOT taking Actigall? I hate to take it because I am afraid of side effects (especially because I tend to have allergic reactions- particularly hives) and I understand it thins your hair, too (great- between the hair loss due to surgery and now this, do I need to buy a wig now?) Now, I'm a planner so I like to have things ready to go and I understand this is going to be a take it one day at a time sorta thing because my body may or may not like certain things after surgery. But I have a fairly busy life; young kids, full time job, etc. Well I have the next couple weekends off and I'd like to make my life a little bit easier for when I return to work after surgery. I'll probably still be in a mushy food stage when I return to work and wanted to make some soups/other foods ahead of time and freeze them, but I'm not sure if it will be worth it. Walked a lot from day 1 and used inspiration spirometer like crazy too 10 times per hour-was very compliant and literally, just soo thrilled to be in the post-op phase. Afterwards on day 4, I had some complications, however. Temp went from 99 (was 99-99.4 post op days 1-3) to 102.6 on day 4. At the ER, all blood work was normal, but the the ct scan with contrast & chest ray showed that I have ATELECTASIS as it turns out. Hello, I was sleeved 10/17 along with a hernia repair and discharged 10/18. I was only getting 7 oz of fluid in a day and finally called my surgeon. He said I was released way to soon and need to get back to the hospital since I was so dehydrated only getting 7 oz of liquid in per day. He said I need to be getting 60-70oz in per day. Unfortunately I am still in the hospital and won’t be released until I can start drinking. Thankfully I haven’t had any nausea or throwing up, however when I drink something I feel it hit my stomach or now pouch and it feels like an elephant jumps on it. Has anyone experienced this?

I know nsaids are a no no for us so was wondering if anyone else had this problem and how did you manage it? Also are gastric bypass patients also not allowed nsaids? She really wants to have the surgery but ibuprofen is the only thing that helps her pain and now she’s discouraged.

I've read a lot of similar posts on here, but everyone seems to interpret "eat normally again" to mean going back to eating the way I did before surgery. What I mean is that when I calculate what a normal, healthy, active person at my goal weight should be eating each day to maintain that weight, it's around 2,400 calories a day (I'm a 6' male with a bigger frame). The impression I've gotten from my surgeon and nutritionist is that I'll likely be averaging 1,000 - 1,200 calories a day for the rest of my life. The surgery d…

I am staying the first 2 days at my friends house because I live far away from the hospital and would like to be near by just in case anything happens. I bought a mini fridge to store h20's, yogurts, poweraid zero, broth, and Jello. I brought some books, my computer, and cell phone and I have lots of comfy pj's. Can you think of anything else? I don't want to be bored, I hate being bored so I added like 30 instant shows and movies to my netflix account.
