POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by monkeyol,

Hey, I'm getting sleeved at the end of the month and just wanted to hear from a few of you that have been sleeved already. My diet is awful. It's incredibly carb heavy! I know that I will be changing my diet forever now to keto style. Did any of you find this really hard? I'm worried I don't have enough will power. Anytime I have tried keto before I have never been able to stick to it. I'm worried that I'm gonna lose the weight and put it straight back on again as I always have [emoji22]

  2. I am concerned yesterday evening around 6pm I got this pain on the top part of my shoulder up to my neck. My stomach is fine I dont feel sick my incisions isnt hurting but my shoulder is bothering me. I am a worry wart. I will be calling my surgeon office after my morning shift. I had surgery September 26th and returned to work yesterday October 10th with no restrictions. Has anyone experience this 16 days post op. I did have my hernia repaired during my sleeve procedure. I want to call out of work but its to late I have to go in smh. Just worried. I been feeling fine up until yesterday late evening Sent from my LGMS210 using BariatricPal mobile app

I was just wondering if any of you ladies find you need more calories during your cycle. My cycles are really heavy and a week long. By the middle of my cycle I feel weak and tired if I don't increase my consumption and my NUT said that I might need more nutrition due to the increased blood loss during my cycle. It's insane though, I average about 1100-1300 calories a day normally but this week I've been averaging 1500-1600. I've been adding iron rich foods at the insistence of my NUT. I just didn't know if this was normal?

So I'm one week post op and I'm trying to think of all of the food that would be good to eat after I'm completely healed. I like eating refried beans with shredded cheese on top I know that sounds weird. But I felt like there is high protein with that and maybe that's a good thing to eat once I'm healed. To the people that are already healed up and eating normally, what does your eating look like now?

I had my surgery on the 22nd of June. I've lost a good amount of weight but I still would like to lose more. I haven't been drinking my protein like I should be. Do any sleeve vets have any ideas on how to kick start some more weight loss? If I start drinking my protein shakes/water to get 60 oz a day, will that help get me going again?

When I was in the hospital every time I dozed off I would have a bad dream, and since I've gotten home (surgery was 9/11/17) I've had 2 horrible very real like dreams. I'm not one to hardly ever dream at all, so this is really weird for me! I thought maybe when I was in the hospital that maybe it was a side effect to the pain medicine, but I haven't been taking any pain meds since I've been home. The only medicine I take is the antacid they prescribed, and my vitamins. This is so weird! Has anyone else had this issue??

I am having a hard time getting protein in because I hate my shakes but I am getting all my fluids in and my vitamins. I am getting about 30g of protein daily. Frustrated!!

  20. I’m two and a half weeks post op after having gastric sleeve surgery. Does everyone stick to all decaf beverages after surgery ? I cannot find any fast food places that carry decaffeinated unsweetened iced tea, except Panera Bread. My surgeon / dietician advises all decaf beverages. I was in a hurry today & got caffeinated unsweetened iced tea at Hardee’s. Will this slow my weight loss? I have researched all over the internet....thanks in advance for any information

So, since surgery 8 weeks ago, I have been having heart palpitations. Had another ekg, and my Pcp and Bariatric nurse both guessed electrolyte imbalance. 1st labs come back fine, so no electrolyte imbalance. It happens after I eat, but not always. Ham, tomato soup w/1/2 grilled cheese, chicken tenders, all cause my heart rate to go over 120, sometimes up to a few hours. I'm not always hitting my protein goal, get my water and stay under 60 carbs total. White bread toast doesn't make it happen, nor did a soft serve ice cream cone. So, nurse thinks dumping, even though my only symptoms is palpitations and feeling like I have to sit down. I've seen anecdotal evi…

Hi all, In the past month I've fainted twice. Fainting is not new to me, used to faint due to dehydration Pre-op, so the first time I fainted (in Vegas, no alcohol) I thought it was due to dehydration so my NP ordered for me to get IV hydration. Today I fainted again (this time in a Verizon store), but didn't feel it coming like I usually do, and after fainting I've been more tired than normal and kind of nauseous. I called my surgeon's after hours number and my surgeon doesn't think it's hydration related because I'm further post-op than typical for dehydration to occur. He said just to rest, eat a snack, keep drinking water, and call the office tomorrow for an appoin…

I’m 8 months out from surgery and am down almost 100 pounds. Last month I started having a lot of pain in my hips. My left one has actually dislocated. My knees do that and I’m used to it but never had that problem with my hips before. It’s to the point of starting to limp when just walking around the house and store. I had an MRI of both hips and they said it shows arthritis. Didn’t say how bad or anything and gave me a referral to an orthopedic doctor, who I see on the 18th. I always thought you were supposed to feel better after losing weight but am finding just the opposite is true for me. Has anyone else had this happen? How was it treated? I know we can’t t…

So, the first question I asked my doctor was, "When can I have sex?" Before surgery I had a pretty active, and regular sex life, and now that I'm 7 days out, I think that enough time has passed and I don't see why I shouldn't be going back to my regular life. I have some incision pain but it's mininal. I stopped taking pain meds 4 days ago. My doctor said that as long as I don't have pain, and I don't do anything that will hurt that there's no reason why I can't have sex. Granted, there will be no swinging from the chandeliers or anything, but with some creativity I think I'm ready. My girl on the other hand, thinks I'm going to break and is totally against it. She…

That's closer to a cup. I'm curious as to what others on a similar timeline are having for meals throughout the day. Anyone care to share?

I had my sleeve done on 9/28 and have been doing ok but really starting to notice a constricted feeling , like there's a rubber band and around my stomach but feels like heartburn. I know that's kinda vague. I am taking Prilosec daily so I don't think it's heartburn but it's just a constant uncomfortable feeling. Maybe gas bubbles? Or normal post op stretching? Does this make any sense to anyone else?..

So my theory was over this 2 weeks I have been in hosp the decrease in food must have caused my sleeve to shrink? Especially the couple of days I went 2 days with no food. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and am 3 weeks post op. One of the main reasons I did the surgery was to help with my knee pain. I am down 25 pounds (I lost 14 prior to surgery), and now my knees hurt so bad even laying in bed. If I turn a certain way in bed or walking my knees have this horrible pain that shoots through them. The pain management Dr. had told me the next step was knee replacement, but I didn't want to go that route, if possible. He had also said getting the weight off would also help my knees. Has anyone experienced more knee pain with losing weight, and does that pain eventually go away?

I am having a tearing/pulling, burning pain to the right of my belly button more than an inch from any incision. It is fine if I lay down and don’t move. The moment I get up and move now it hurts so much. I cannot bend over and walking hurts so much. It used to wax and wane, but now it is almost constant after I sit up and pain pills aren’t working. It used to help if I applied pressure, but even that hurts now. Anyone else had a similar issue?? Left a message for my nurse again since it is getting worse.

  47. Started by Samib226,

So I absolutely love water. It has always been my favorite drink to drink. Before surgery I would drink like 6-8 water bottles a day. Now that I have had surgery, it is a lot harder to drink that much water BC my stomach won't really hold that much at a time, and sipping water all day seems that I can't get 64 oz in because it gets warm so fast, and sometimes I just need to taste something lol. Does anyone think that I can count Powerade zero as my intake for some water? Like maybe 15 oz or less a day.

On vacation in New Orleans, drinking capital of the world. I won't do that again. I honestly don't like water. I try and try to get it down. I had my Drs appt, 1 month follow up yesterday. Dr. Said I'm doing good. I've lost 27 pounds since August 25th, 14 pounds since surgery on 9/11/17. I forgot to tell the Dr. that I get brief chest/throat pain while eating certain foods. I'm not sure if this is something that just doesn't agree with me or what. I chew the food up really well, and it is soft to begin with. My throat and chest also makes a gurgling sound, which feels weird. Has anyone else had this issue? Also wonder if it could be because of the hiatal hernia repair I also had done at the same time as my sleeve? It does make me slow down even more with eating, like a warning...
