POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Aginn10,

I know there's no way it's just me but wow. I never dreamed my back could be so sore from all the weird movements etc. it kills!

  2. Started by gotime0810,

What natural remedies do you all use for nausea? I don't feel like I'm going to actually throw up, just feel off. Pre-surgery I would sip on ginger ale and nibble on crackers, but those are no longer options.

  3. Started by SlieveMishAmy,

Hi Everyone. I'm on the puree stage and have tolerated most foods well. I am craving some bolognese / ragu - did anyone else introduce beef this early? How did you get on?

Hey everyone! It's my first post, and it just had to be tmi. I haven't had a bowel movement since the morning of my surgery. I can pass some gas, and I took Miralax 2 days in a row with no result. The surgeon's office seemed more concerned that I was passing gas. Did this happen to any of you? How long did it take to resolve? I stopped my pain med yesterday, so that should help. Every time I drink liquids, my stomach hurts and I get a pain in my right side. Protein drinks are hard to get down. Maybe I should not refrigerate them? I tried sugar free chocolate pudding the other day. It gave me cramps like I'd have to go to the bathroom, but nothing happ…

Hey everyone I am coming up 5 weeks post op and a bit confused about exercise. Doesn't help I've never dobe any in my fine but whilst laid on my sofa decided I feel fit enough now I realised I have not been told what to do or given any tips! I vaguely remember reading a pamphlet pre op about getting in 20mins walking a day which I do strive for but... Barely gets my heart rate up. What kinds of things does everyone do? Any useful links or tips? I have a treadmill ( I'm about 11lbs to heavy for the reccomend weight though) but otherwise it'll just be my body moving. Thanks. 8. Started by Kathytej,

Yesterday was my first day of solid foods - I ended the day disgusted. Too full, too much food, so I am back to my puree for breakfast then for lunch and dinner I will do solids, I am tracking my protein intake and calories to play safe but definitely I will cut down in the amount of food, doctor said 4 to 5 oz if possible. I will do 3 oz it works for me. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

I’m in my 3rd week post op VSG and I could go all day without eating, I don’t feel hungry at all. I do eat the soft diet 3 times a day because I know I have to and I try to get the 64 oz of fluids in too. Does anyone else have this issue. It’s not a no appetite thing it’s just I don’t feel hungry.

Ok so I am a little frustrated at the moment. My bypass was on 8/25. On 9/5 my nutritionistchanged my diet from clear liquids to full liquids. I have been on full liquids since and I am dying over here. I can't tolerate any of the protein shakes so she finally is allowing me to have 1% milk and yogurt but I still haven't had any pureed food. I see most of you on here talking about being on puree two weeks out and I'm just wondering what is going on with me. Is my DR just trying to torture me ? I'm craving eggs so bad and she says it will be atleast another month before Eggs are introduced.

Hi ya'll, I'm in ending my 3rd week post op and I'm encountering a stall. How long will this last? Just curious. I'm sticking to the plan 60 grams protein, clear liquids, and taking vitamins. I'm doing 30 minutes of exercise/walking 5 days a week and 60 minutes 1 to 2 days a week. I’m 7 weeks post op and starting about 3 days ago I’ve had really bad nausea, no matter what I eat or drink I get nauseous and even if I don’t eat or drink I get nauseous. I am on a PPI, I have no gallbladder pain and I’ve thrown up twice but nothing really came up. I’m going to get a hold of the dietician tomorrow but I’m wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Gang, Has anyone tested carbonation out yet? I had a Mimosa and everything was fine, ( I did drink it slowly). I just attempted to have a few sips of Diet Dr. Pepper and I almost DIED! 21. I have 2 questions that I'm looking for some information on. I was told that after the gastric sleeve you can't take an NSAIDs anymore? But when I do research some say u can just not every day, others say not at all, and some even say they were never told anything about it. I ask bc I'm having major back issues. I'm really inflamed all throughout my spine and they suggested taking an anti inflammatory but I didn't think I could so I looked into natural supplements and they say turmeric is really beneficial for inflammation so I was thinking of trying that but I'd really like input on taking, ibuprofen or aleve etc... I converted my sleeve to bypass on 9/11, was 314 on surgery day. My high weight was 460. This journey is long and winding, take pleasure in every step of the way!

I would appreciate some advice on selecting a personal trainer. I have had two. One Pre- surgery worked me very hard - pushed me - and with the result that 24-36 hours after most sessions I was so stiff I could hardly move. The hour was frankly torture that I got through. Post -surgery I have had 12 sessions with a different personal trainer . This individual always gives me the two kilo weights for the first rep and I need to encourage her to give me more weight. I have never had a single ache after a session. I am not a natural fitness bunny so I can't honestly say that I enjoyed the exercise more with this personal trainer. Both trainers emphasised wa…

  28. So bypass was 9/12. Follow up is on 9/30. At this point I am down 21 lbs. I did weigh Sunday and was below 200 only to weigh again ( feeling really bloated this morning) and discovering I was at 203. Probably not a big deal but I have a few questions. 1. Is this normal? Weight fluctuation? 2. I should be on puréed foods. I'm still having a lot of bloating. I know I'm eating foods of the wrong consistency (and I AM CHANGING IMMEDIATELY after talking with one of my supportive mentors) but I want to know if I've done real damage or if this is where the bloating is coming from. 3. There are very little limitations on my puréed diet but it does say no raw fruits and vegg…

Hi! I was sleeved 9/18 and doing pretty good so far except for the constant pain/gas in the middle of my chest. Literally every swallow of water, soup, SF jello, SF pudding etc -- I feel it. Even when I am not consuming anything, I feel it sometimes. I am still able to mostly get my protein/water intake in but I am just so uncomfortable and miserable due to this:-( I did have my hiatal hernia repaired during surgery so I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their recovery after having the sleeve and hiatal hernia repair? When did it finally start to go away or feel better? Thanks!!

Hi, guys I had my vsg on 9/18/17. I had difficulty with fluid intake so I was in the hospital 4 days. I’m home now and I’m doing much better with fluids, but I can only intake water and some vitamin water. The cream soups are too salty with dilution and the sweet shakes are too sweet. I don’t want either and I have had to force myself to take in 1/2 a cup a day of protein from Unjury. I know it is no where near my goal. I have my first post op appointment on Monday 10/2/17 and was wondering if I just focused on getting in water until then will I be fine. I’m a little frustrated and the pain is horrendous if I attempt to do anything but lay on my back. Any positive input …

I was sleeved on August 18, 2017 in Tijuana, Mexico. I haven’t seen a primary care physician since my surgery and I was wondering at what point I should do so? I’ve heard that it’s a good idea to check in with a doctor to make sure everything is going smoothly and you’re not malnourished. Even those of you who were sleeved in the states, how often have you seen your doctor? Thanks friends [emoji178]

I was sleeved on 9/20 and I have been very cautious about not drinking too fast so that wouldn't be uncomfortable. Today I have been taking larger drinks without discomfort, so I was wondering if I am not feeling the full sensation. Right now, I'm still having gas pains and incision pain, and a lot of gas movement/sounds so maybe I can't get a good idea of what it feels like because of everything else going on? Thoughts? Similar experiences? Thanks!

I had my VSG on 9/5/2017 and I was so thrilled before I had my surgery. I felt so much excitement because I worked hard to lose the weight I needed. I kept to the pre-op diet and managed to cut a lot of bad foods from my life. I made some big lifestyle changes as well. I hardly slept the week before my surgery and I felt the happiest I had ever felt in my life. But post-op, I just feel blah. It seems like I just lost all the excitement I had before. I go to my group meetings and I see all the other patients who had the surgery, and they have seem to have endless amounts of energy. So this may be an unusual one, but I wanted to get an electric hand-mixer to help me make things like Jell-O and Pudding (nearly liquid mixing, no heavy stuff). I bought a 2-speed one that included a whisk attachment, and the lowest speed is way too fast and splashes all over the place. Has anyone come across one of these things where the lowest speed would be good for something like this without making a mess? Thanks.

I am one week out and I'm suppose to still be doing liquids and my funnel diet which includes scrambled eggs and Greek yogurt and broths for another week. but the nurses keep telling me I can slowly start eating regular foods now. I was wondering if you used a coughing pillow after VSG and if so, how long after surgery did you need it? Would a firm pillow be better than a squishy fluffy one? I am hoping to go back to school a week after surgery (hopeful, not overly optimistic lol) and I was wondering if I'd need to take my pillow with me.
