POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Lene9,

Long story short... I have really bad cramps and I took the recommended dosage of milk of magnesia and I can’t stop using the restroom now lol. When does it stop? Lol

  2. Started by cabookie11,

I’m one month out from gastric bypass and have only lost 19 pounds. Is that normal?

  3. Started by STjourney,

Hi everyone! I was sleeved earlier this week 2/05 and I’m feeling great. My doctor told me to start on puréed. The first few days it was hard to get liquid down because of gas pains. It’s better now and I had hummus as my first puréed item. Is it normal that I don’t feel full? I had about 3.2 oz of hummus. I know we are suppose to learn to feel comfortable, not full, but I guess I sort of assumed that with how small my stomach should be now, I would feel it more with that much? Will I maybe feel different from other foods or more solid foods later on? Wondering about your experiences immediately post-op. Thanks ?

  4. Started by Miami,

I had a gastric sleeve revision on January 23, 2018. I have lost only 9 pound, which I lost the first week... nothing after that. I am afraid this won’t work for me again!

  5. Started by colt45,

Hi all. 17 days post op here and I seem to have pain on the left side. Mostly when I’m laying down and try to roll over. I feel excruciating pain for about 10 long seconds. Anyone experience this? Does it go away?

  6. Hi y’all, I’m just shy of 9 months post. The last couple of months it’s been ridiculous having to sit down. Within ten minutes, my bum gets numb and tingling. I am constantly shifting positions to try and alleviate it some. I’ve been searching for ways to hopefully get rid of it. Main thing is probably to workout my bottom and strengthen the glutes, but I want to hear if anyone has had some success with whatever you’ve done to get rid of the numbness and tingling. Btw...if I sit for 10-15 mins, the symptoms don’t go away at all! I have to go to bed with it still going. A bit frustrating.

Hi there! I’m finally on purée/soft foods and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to portion food so that you don’t overeat. I know they say eat until you are full but I haven’t reached that yet. I can’t tell when I’m full and don’t want to overeat. How much are we supposed to have at a meal? I’ve heard 4oz is this typical?

  9. I have a surgery date of July 19th. I am getting a little concerned with the group because I feel unprepared for the Liquid Diet and the post op diet. I feel the NY bariatric group explanations during the process are terrible and they push you so fast through like a meat factory. Is this the norm for the industry? I am finally done with every prerequisite I needed to do and had some time to put in thought. Thanks for the help!!

It's interesting how your taste changes post surgery. I am almost 8 weeks out, and pretty much have to choke down my chalky chew able vitamins. My nut recommends 2 chew able Flintstones Complete daily; got sick of those after a month and switched to Centrum chew able Orange Blast. Yuk. The nut at my bariatric center instructed us not to use gummies--her reasoning was that early on it could 'coat or stick to the stomach incision line' and cause problems. She also recommended against swallowing pills whole, but after several weeks of gagging on my crushed/opened Prilosec, Celexa, and Actigall, I swallow them whole with pudding without issues. I tried this method after…

  11. So tonight was my first time dining out w. My family.. we went to a local restaurant. I was excited but nervous.. I ended up ordering shrimp tacos. W. A side of steamed veggies.. I removed the taco wrap and ate the grilled shrimp and shredded cheese. There was three tacos. I ate the shrimp and cheese out of two of them and brought 1 home. Ate most of the veggies except the carrots. They were the hard whole ones so I was nervous about those. I feel I may have a tiny bit more then 4 oz. But I really didn't have a lot today food wise so I didn't feel so bad.. I do feel a bit full and was nervous I was gonna be sick but home now and feeling ok.. I'm nervous for v.day. my h…

I'm trying to walk more but it just hurts really bad. I can't bent, sit up or walk without pain even shirts on bother my stomach smh. Hi everyone! First post here... Anyways, was sleeved 02/06 just a few days ago and I'm now experiencing serious back pains... I'm not sure if it's because I'm laying down too much or if it's just pain in my back .. anyone experience back pain this immediately post op? Also how did everyone sleep? I cant sleep well at night as I'm not a back sleeper but I'm scared to sleep on my side or tummy.

I know everyone goes thru stalls...I've already had a few. And, I am down 43 lbs. since my very first doc visit on March 30th when I started this journey. However, I'm not sure I'm buying the whole 'your body goes into starvation mode' excuse anymore. I know 43 is a lot, and I'm not trying to say I'm failing. I just don't understand how I can go from eating way too much food like I had been for 30 years to eating just a few bites and not lose even 1 lb. during the week. The last 2 weeks I have started walking about an hour every day in the heat and humidity. I come home from my walk soaking wet with sweat. I just don't get how I can make such a drastic change to my…

I have talked to my doctor and my surgeon both tell me patience, I just need to know that I’m not alone and that this is a normal experience. I’m still on protein shakes only as every time I eat soft food I get terrible stomach pain so that eating equals pain therefore I don’t want to eat. I may be getting 800 to 900 cal a day, I doubt I’m getting my 60 to 80 g of protein. I have released 28 pounds since starting pre-surgery prep, and my diabetes and CPAP requirements have almost disappeared. Am I the only one that is experiencing the transition to different eating categories has been delayed due to things like pain when you eat, the pain is in my stomach. Thanks for shar…

Hi all! I am about 4 months away from my 2 year anniversary of my surgery. I have lost over 90 lbs which is great. The problem I am having is that I have stayed at the same weight for easily 6 months, although there has been some difference in how clothing fits, showing that I have still lost a bit but not much. I have gotten back into a very bad sugar/carb habit and am able to eat more food more easily. I have some health conditions that makes it hard for me to do much exercise and causes a lot of fatigue. I need a re-set button or something. I have come too far. I don't really know what I need, except maybe an overhaul of my diet again. Having said that, I KNOW…

  23. Any experience changing to a whole new bariatric team AFTER your surgery? I'm 8 weeks out and having an extremely rough go of it. I've been hospitalized twice postop for dehydration, I'm still not eating, barely keeping liquids down (lucky to get 16oz a day), totally bed ridden and miserable. My bariatric team is not taking this seriously enough and is not working proactively towards a solution. I want to go to a new office, but I don't know how to begin. Any tips for finding a GOOD team? Anyone in the MD area have recommendations? I'm close to DC but willing to travel up to an hour or more for quality care.

I’m about 4 weeks post op and I throw up when I drink or eat anything. Followed up with my doctor yesterday and they sent me to get an IV drip for dehydration thinking it would help my nausea. After I did my two litters I still felt nauseated, when I try to drink or eat I throw up. The first couple weeks I did not feel this way. Has this happened to anyone? I’m really scared.

I'm 3 months post-op RNY and trying to go more plant based. I ate mostly vegetarian prior to surgery, but started eating meat again after because it's higher in protein. I've noticed that I'm not sleeping, constantly lacking energy now and have had several kidney stones recently, which is how I felt when I used to eat meat. My concern is that plant based proteins aren't as high in protein as meat. I've got plant based protein powder, though it's higher in sugar, but I don't want to do protein shakes for every meal/snack. Anyone else follow a plant based diet? What are some good options for protein? Does anyone juice post op?

Just had my gastric bypass yesterday. I was not feeling well at all. Happy to say I am getting discharged today however I can’t seem to tolerate liquids that is not water or jello. Any recommendations? I am super bloated and cramping from gas pain. Any way to work it out of my system faster? I am very uncomfortable. Also constipation.... when did you guys start taking stool softeners or did you not require it? I really only had water these past two days and I know I need to incorporate protein somehow but makes me ver nauseas. Let me know what worked for everyone?

Salad and fresh fruit? I’m a little over 3 weeks post op, bypass. My surgeon said we will discuss moving to lunchmeat at my next visit in 2 weeks. But all I crave is fresh fruit and I’d literally kill for a salad. I plan on asking him at my next visit, but I figured I’d run it by the professionals until then

Hi everyone! So I had my surgery on 1/31 and I’ve been slowly recovering since then. I haven’t felt much hunger the first 4 days (probably cause I was still dealing with a lot of nausea and pain) Currently, I’m incredibly hungry! I feel much better physically and less pain overall but this is also very stressful to deal with. I’ve been taking my liquids and protein shakes but I wanted to reach out and ask what helped you?

I had VSG surgery on 8/23/17 so I am about 5 months out and now 58 pounds down. 30 of those pounds came off within the first few weeks. I feel like now Im slipping into bad habits because I am unmotivated. I still eat small portions and get full quickly but not losing. Is it too late for me to get back? Did I mess up royally? I haven’t moved in a couple weeks and I’m really frustrated. SW-335 CW- 277 Any tips for getting back on the losers Bench? I don’t want this to be the end of my journey when I’m still heavy.

2 Years after my surgery I started having problems. I'm hoping someone out there can tell me if they went through this or give me advice. 5 months ago (2 years after my surgery) I started vomiting. I would have SERIOUS pain in by my left shoulder blade. The vomiting was/is mostly very foamy. First I thought is was the type of foods I was eating. It started out with a biscuit, pizza, pancakes. I thought I might have been allergic to gluten. Then I would start throwing up vegetables, cheese, anything, etc. Even though the vomiting concerned me, I was more interested in what caused the pain in my left shoulder blade. The only was to ease that pain was to stick my finger down…

Since I am new at this I am discovering things for the first time . I am surprised I still have cravings, is that normal?? Nothing like before where it occupies all my thoughts. However, if you have a piece of chocolate near me I feel good having a piece ( won’t have as much thought) Are craving especially for sweets Normal ? I am having issues with dairies making my protein shake an issue to consume. Dairies & fats are making me nauseous. Unfortunately, sugars are not.
