POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by sello,

I have a question for the people that are post op, were any of you diagnosed with a pituitary tumor prior to surgery and if so, has it affected your weight loss journey in any way?

I've searched the past posts, but can't find anything related to this, and OF COURSE, it started on Friday! Yesterday morning I woke up with pain similar to 1 week post op. I figured I just slept on my stomach and pulled my stomach muscles, gas, etc because it went away after an hour or two. This morning, same thing. I made sure I didn't sleep on my stomach, but last night I couldn't sleep on my side! This morning I'm back to using the heating pad and taking Tylenol. It's only at the large incision site, which is totally healed and looks good. Obviously, I am calling the doctor Monday morning. I'm just looking to see if someone else experienced this? Everything else had …

  6. ok so I'm 15 days post op and i feel like I'm starving!!! the nurse told me its head hunger and of course i got a little defensive .... like your not in my body you don't feel what i feel. after a lot of thought i realized a lot of it is in my head ..... i see all this food that I'm used to eating in fact as a single mom I'm up close to it 24/7 because i obviously can not starve my kids but I'm struggling big time because even though some of it is in my head i am also really hungry as embarrassing as it is i have to admit I've eaten a very tiny piece of meat and it hurt my stomach I've chewed and spit. I've even sucked the cheese of Cheetos (I've rarely done these t…

Is anyone else experiencing a stop in weight loss after three weeks of surgery? I'm walking every day 20 min to an hour. Getting plenty of sleep, I try and eat and drink as much as I can. Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong?

  8. Started by melsabells,

I am guessing the answer is when your surgeon gives the ok but i'd like a general idea. We have a rather larger yard and can only use push mowers. I don't want my mom to have to do it alone. Of course we'd have to get rain for the grass to grow. LOL .01 of moisture in the last 150+ days here.

  9. Guys, help! I'm a paranoid hyper-anxious person, so I'm not sure whether I am obsessing unnecessarily. So, I'm 8 months post op and down 115 lbs. After my stricture dilation 2 months post op I've had very little discomfort with eating or drinking. I could *almost* chug like normal and it was nice to get my water in so easily...I could even use straws... But... This past week I've been feeling very subtle pain off and on in my upper left abdomen. It's dull/crampy and more annoying that painful. Then suddenly (like, last two days) I've felt a lot of restriction in my pouch... Small drinks of water cause lots of pressure and give me the feeling of needing to burp …

  13. Before my RNY I had very bad diabetes and had a different Rx. for my eye glasses. My glasses that I had made when I had real bad issues with my diabetes are not working so well now since I no longer take the meds for it and no longer have sugar problems. I am wearing a pair of glasses I had made before I really had any problems with diabetes. So it seems like my vision has gotten better since I don't have sugar issues anymore ????... Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hi everyone. I’m new to this site. I do want some advice. I am now 2 months post op and have lost 33 pounds and seem to now gain and lose the same 3 pounds. I am struggling with sweets and am really wanting soda. I feel like I’m grazing and struggling with eating a stable meal except dinner. For dinner every night I do eat tomatoes and cottage cheese. Any advice to get over this sweet hump. I am so disappointed in myself and discouraged.

  17. So I had my gastric sleeve 2 months ago exactly and things are going fantastic - down 51lbs so far. One odd thing I’m noticing though is my weight loss is more dramatic in specific areas causing indents or rolls between 2 sections. An example is the top part of my stomach before my chest has an indent in the middle. I’m also getting 2 sets of laugh lines on my face when I smile as it’s losing weight. My sides now go totally in causing the part towards arm pit and the “tube” part of my belly to look like 2 separate rolls. Im not complaining as I look so much better and I feel much better but it’s odd that my body is losing weight more in very specific areas.…

  18. Hello everybody, I'm 5 months Post-op from VSG.Ive been in a stall for 2 months. I had an appointment at my Surgeon's yesterday. They told me I'm not taking in enough calories for my body to efficiently lose steadily. They want me at 2000 calories a day. I work out hard 3 days a week and lift very heavy and do Orange Theory workouts 2 days a week. So I'm in the gum burning crazy calories 5 days a week. Has anyone dealt with this as well? At what point does it get better? I’m not in a huge rush to eat, I’m pretty content with my meals now But Any help would be great.

  23. I'm about a week away from my gastric sleeve surgery (3/14/2018). I've taken a fair amount of before pictures, I measured my waist, hips, arms, thighs, and neck so I can use that to track if I'm losing when the scale inevitably plateaus, and I think I have the essentials packed for surgery (gas-x, biotene, baby spoons, all my vitamins for the first month, water bottle). I was curious about to those who have been through it - what do you wish you had done before surgery to either make it easier, to make your progress more visible, or just simple quality of life things?

Hi all. Im just starting on the road to WLS for the 2nd time (I chickened out 5 years ago, and now I'm 20 pounds heavier...gahhh). I'm single and live alone. My nearest family is close, just 10 miles away. And I have a few close friends. But I'm independent to a fault. I'm wondering how well other single people have managed post-surgery? Assuming no major complications, should I mostly be ok on my own? i do have an elderly cat who may require more care than I can give initially, so I am a little worried about him. Any advice and/or lessons-learned would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I’m 2 months post op. Today, no matter WHAT I eat, I get extremely nauseous. Even if it’s just a tiny bit. I’m also getting that full feeling just after a couple bites, and of course I stop eating, but then I feel like I’m gonna throw up. Then I get super hungry after an hour or so, then nauseous again after I eat. I haven’t eaten anything today that I haven’t already tried. Should I just expect to have bad days like this? If so, what do you suggest I eat?

I am interested if your doctor/Nutritionist allowed you to have coffee 1 month after surgery. See poll attached. Seems like there is some confusion as to whether or not it is okay to drink.

  28. This post is actually for my daughter. She had a gastric bypass on December 18, 2017 and has done very well losing weight. However, for the past couple of weeks she has had extreme dry heaves in the morning when she first gets up and sometimes at night. They are so severe that it causes radiating pain from her back, up into the back of her neck, Into her hairline and no amount of medication has been able to completely stop her pain. She thought it was from drainage due to a cold, because she is not throwing up any food, just a little mucus. I am so worried ...but cannot convince her to contact her bariatric surgeon. Haven't posted in a long while. I am approaching 6 years post op. I have had lots of ups and downs. Generally I am pleased and I have not put weight back on. I was about 350 prior to surgery and I float in between 160 and 170 pounds. Eating is still a struggle but its something you learn to deal with. I hope everyone is doing well and receiving the support that is needed. If I can help anyone the way that I was helped and supported by this forum, I would gladly help.

  30. I’m wondering whether anyone else in this forum suffers from this issue.......I had my surgery on 1/2/18 and haven’t really had any issues except this one. I try to walk at least 3 miles every other day. I don’t walk every day because I have degenerative disc disease and spinal stenosis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and lupus and I need a “rest” day because of pain. My problem is that on the days I walk, about 30-60 minutes after I return home, I start getting really bad abdominal cramping and have to [emoji90]. No Dr has been able to tell me why I cannot get my period even when I was prescribed Provera to provoke my period. I finally decided to get the sleeve surgery as a way to possibly conceive before I turn 40. I was sleeved on 1/09/2018 and till' this day I've had no signs of my period. Anyone else have the same issue? I fear i may be infertile even though tests show otherwise. Your advise it greatly appreciated!

Historically, I have always had low cholesterol (it had to be genetics!). The highest its ever been is 190 and the lowest was 160. 2 months prior to surgery, my CHOL was 170, TRIG = 51, HDL = 72 and LDL = 133. I am 5 months post op and had my labs done today by my PCP and my cholesterol is the highest ever - 221 with elevated HDL and LDL. I was SHOCKED. I am strict with my diet, I have had no sugar and carbs are at about 24 grams per day. I basically eat meat, veggies and low fat cheese and yogurt. I work out 7 days a week - swimming 2 miles a day, 3x per week and work out at least 30 minutes the other 4 days a week. I had better cholesterol levels when I ate crap! I hav…

Had surgery 2/22 and so far I'm doing awesome with staying hydrated, bowel movements, gas, walking, pretty much everything except getting protein in! I've found that I tend to get nauseous with the few powders I have on hand (isopure zero carb, isopure clear, & any bariatric fusion) I can seem to tolerate one milk based protein premade shake I picked up yesterday as well as plain low fat milk. However the stats aren't the greatest on the shake and I can't get enough in a day... any suggestions to help with this? I plan on adding unflavored protein powder to my purées when I start them on 3/2, but till then I'm not quite sure what to do... :/
