POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Hi all I'm new here! I had my surgery a week ago and overall I think im recovering well, I'm sleeping, walking, and drinking water. My problem is that when I eat strained soup, shakes or even water sometimes, it seems to hit the top of my pouch (I imagine) and although it goes down it causes fairly intense pain for a moment followed immediately by this wave of the most intense hunger I've ever felt. I'm hungry all the time anyway but this is the type of hunger that makes you feel you might throw up, if that makes sense. The liquid then comes up a little bit but I don't vomit and it'll go back down again. I haven't felt not hungry once since the op which is getting me dow…

  2. I don’t know if it’s head hunger, but I feel like I was literally hunger after surgery. Still to this day. I’m 3 days out. Is it because I’m on liquids and everyone is eating food around me? Also- my surgeon says the hunger feeling may be just irritation to the lining of my stomach from surgery. Please tell me other people felt hungry?? I know it’s only 3 days out but what if my stomach is too big or this isn’t going to work for me

Hi all! Ok, so I am 2 weeks & 2 days out from VSG & am struggling... Regret has crossed my mind every day since surgery [emoji17] Unlike many of my fellow sleevers, I experienced significant pain following surgery, which was the first hurdle that I dragged myself over, along with being able to take in the minimum liquids to go home. Over the first week the pain subsided & the liquids got easier, but then bring on puréed food stage. I am constantly bloated & feel like I am going to pop, after only having taken in 1 Tablespoon of Purée. This then makes it extremely difficult to get the fluids in between. So much so that I feel like I am forcing fluids in &…

Today was my first trip to the grocery at 10 days post op. It was much harder than I anticipated. My husband went with me and as he was casually throwing his usual junk food in the cart, I felt a huge wave of sadness just looking at all the things that I would no longer get to enjoy. I had a committed relationship with each one of those tasty morsels. I had mentally broken up with this food about 5 months ago via the usual food funerals but seeing it all piled up in the cart, it was like ripping a huge bandaid off and boy oh boy, it was painful. The reality of the break up hit hard. I felt myself tearing up in the frozen food aisle, surprising to me since I’m not overl…

Warning, TMI Lol! I’m just wondering if anyone else has been through the same thing and what was the outcome? I had the sleeve on 3/26. I am three weeks out and on the puréed stage. Since I started this stage last week, my stomach has been a mess. It’s making loud gurgling noises I’ve never heard before and I’ve had diarrhea (I’m sorry but it’s true!) for close to a week. Anyone else have this issue? What was the outcome? Yes I called the Dr and they told me to try Imodium for a couple of days. Yesterday was day 1 and no relief. I am calling them again today.

  6. So I am 4 days post op, and I just took my first full shower - soap, shampoo, conditioner... The works! I can't believe how tiring it was! I wonder if a cooler shower would have been easier. I'm currently laying down resting until I feel better. Has anyone else felt the same? How long before I can get out if a shower feeling good?

  7. I’m 6 days post sleeve and off all of my diabetes meds. My numbers are all over the place sometimes as high as 177. Is this normal? I was hoping to be “cured” but I’m getting worried.

Had anyone had any long term side effects or complications from the sleeve? Just trying to be informed to make sure I make the right decision ,[emoji4]

Hi everyone I am new! I had my surgery on 4/16 and I am STARVING. I wish i had gotten the no hunger but I just feel miserable without being able to eat. Is there any remedy for this? Also, I am a worry wort, so when typically does the weight start to drop? I’m still at my surgery day weight. Last question- everytime I get up and try to do things like even walk to the car, I get winded, light headed and need to sit down. Is that normal? Thank you all!!

  11. I've been looking high and low. My weight loss office said I can't have no more than 6g of sugar to avoid dumping syndrome.... Because other applesauce I see is no sugar added or unsweetened....but still has sugar when I read the labels.....can someone help me out here.... Even seeing recipes to make me own....

I'm 10 week after surgery and having problems staying awake after eating dinner. I'm fine in the morning, and whatever I can eat for lunch mostly I'm still having protein drinks, but in the evening when I try to eat small bites of chicken, cheese etc I go to sleep. I'm NOT eating too much carbs under 10 to 20 a day and not high amounts of fat. Anyone else dealing with this? I also don't feel like eating most of the time. I'm running into having a bite or two of chicken or tuna and giving the rest to my dogs. I just can't eat the 2-4 ounces of it.

I know it’s different for everyone in recovery time.. what is the typical recovery time for someone getting the VSG? Or RNY? I’m starting a new job and I’m nervous I’ll lose my job later on once I go for surgery.. The employer does know that I have a pending surgery date (just don’t have an exact date yet) and is aware of all the necessary appointments need to be kept. When she asked how long is the recovery time .. I didn’t know what to say ?‍♀️ [emoji991] Instagram: milaalmodovar [emoji317] SC: almodovarmila

I got my surgery on March 26, that’s about 23 days ago. I’ve lost about 26 lbs so far, and doing well otherwise. Best part so far is that I fit in my old clothes which I haven’t worn for over a year. Alls well, but I still feel lazy. Can’t seem to get off the couch to go walking in the park. How many KM / Miles, should I make it a point to walk per day? Any ideas?

  22. Hi there all, I've been lurking around here on the forums for a few weeks now. I'm just now going into my 4th week post-op and I can't help but keep thinking about what foods I'll be eating once I finish my transition into "normal" food again. I've learned a lot of great recipes from this website called Skinnytaste over the years. They taste amazing, full of healthy ingredients, and very low in calories in my opinion. However, I wanted to see what y'all think about it. You guys are the experts, I'm just a newbie looking for healthy recipes that I can depend on to lose weight, keep it off, and will work with my new stomach. In addition, I noticed that a lot of yo…

I am ready to pull my hair out. SW 266 i lost 16 lbs on pre op diet so before VSG I was 251. I am 16 days post op and I was down to 241 but I started puréed and now the scale will not move from 243.5, it has been five days and I’m going crazy. I thought two weeks post op that I would lose more weight than this. Is it normal to have a stall this early? Thanks

  26. Started by shiannajohnson,

So I’m scheduled for a sleeve on Thursday 4/19/18. I’m wondering how the pain will be. I like to think I have a pretty high pain tolerance. So my question is, for you ladies that have had a c-section, which pain is worse post c-section or post-sleeve? Just so I can get an idea of what to expect. I had a c-section in March 2016 and got my wonderful twin baby girls out of it. Came home and got my rx of pain meds filled but never used them. So I’m curious about the sleeve surgery.

I had the sleeve 1 week tomorrow. I initially lost 11lbs but gained 3 back (weird). I feel perfectly normal as if nothing has happened. I am able to drink with no problems, but sometimes feel gas if too fast. I feel no pain. I am still on the liquid stage and the broth does satisfy me but I still want food. ( I think that part is mental) I am not experiencing any of the dilemmas that I have read. I’m concerned if my sleeve isnt working because I feel too normal. Anyone go through this. Any tips will help thanks!

I am 5 weeks post op and have been feeling pretty down. No weight loss for almost two weeks now. And I know it's part of the course, but nonetheless it's hard. I decided to go jogging tonight without my dogs. Sometimes they can be such a distraction. And boy, I am so glad I did. As I put on one of my favorite tunes "Parallel Lines" by Junior Boys, I began running, and running, and running and I didn't stop for 10 whole minutes. I felt SO ALIVE! I haven't felt like that for 5 years. It is a newfound vitality and it felt amazing. I couldn't believe my feet weren't giving out, I couldn't believe my knees didn't start hurting. Even my hips were okay! I felt so much lighter on…

  30. I think it would be awesome to find other WLS survivors in our areas to meet up with for advice, support and maybe even clothing swaps. You wouldnt have to be tbe only one ordering broth at a resturant. Lol If your interested, post your location (and a major metro if you are in the boonies and willing to travel a bit) and we can start to make IRL friends. What do you think? 31. So I am 14 weeks Post op, and things are going great. However, I have had several stalls, which get discouraging. I will go 2-3 weeks and not lose a pound, and then drop 5 lbs in one week! So weird how the body works. When I am feeling disappointed in the slow weight loss, I do side by side photo comparisons of before and after. Here is one that lifted my spirits today. When you see yourself every day, you don't always see the huge changes that are taking place. Don't always count on the scale to show you your victories! Use photos and body measurements as well. You will need them at times when the scale is not moving.

I feel like I'm eating more TUMS than protein some days. (And the more protein I eat, the more antacids I need.) Yes, I am still on omeprozole, but unfortunately, the doctor wants me to take it at night with another medicine to protect my stomach. So, it's not there during the day when I'm eating. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

I had RNY on Tuesday and was doing really well in the hospital. I walked a lot and found it easy to get in my protein and water. Now that I’m home though, it’s a different story. Even the thought of a protein shake makes me want to throw up. I’m handling crystal light and jello okay, but don’t know what to do about protein. I’ve been taking my nausea meds too, but they don’t seem to be helping. Help!

Since surgery on Tuesday I’ve been having these weird things I can only describe as a cross between a hiccup and a burp. I get them a few times each hour, but not in a row like hiccups. And I’m not releasing any gas with them like you would a burp. All I know is that they’re very uncomfortable and I’d love to hear if anyone else has dealt with these and any suggestions for getting rid of the suckers.

I was told NOT to drink out of a straw. Slow sips of water, often. Well, I did really well the first week or so. Starting week 2, I realize I'm probably only getting 20-30oz in. Yesterday I started filling my 24oz Tervis tumbler with water and drinking through a straw. I hit my 64oz daily goal yesterday and am already at about 32oz today. I haven't *felt* anything weird when drinking with the straw or anything weird going on in my stomach. I really hope I can continue doing this because for some reason, I tend to drink A LOT more when it's from my tumbler with straw. (I wonder if it reminds me of my fast food drinks?!??! What a thought. Yikes.)
