POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by jenbugwi,

I did some quick calculating and, based on my scale, I've lost a little over 4 lbs a week since my sleeve surgery in April. I'm very happy with that, but since I haven't had my 6-week follow up yet with my surgeon, I'm just curious if I'm still on target or slowing down a bit already? I have had at least one stall already, but I know that's to be expected. What's your experience?

Hey guys, Quick question for you. I had my surgery on Monday and tried yogurt for the first time today. I usually just do the cottage cheese but decided to try something different. Right away, my stomach started gurgling and making noise and then came the expelling of gas (sorry TMI - I know...so attractive lol) should I try it again or not? is it good that it’s helping me expel gas or is it giving me more gas?

  4. Hi! So I had my gastric bypass on Monday and I’m on day 4 but I already felt my first hunger pang today and it freaked me out! I’m so scared of not being fulfilled by my full liquid diet or having my cravings creep back up. Is this normal? I’m doing about 5 med cups (30ml) per meal right now and I always feel full afterwards. Btw I haven’t lost any weight yet...when do you start dropping pounds?? thanks in advance

  8. I was sleeved 6 days ago and really the last bit of real discomfort I am feeling is a gassy stomach/sleeve. When I have to burp it is very uncomfortable at what I assume is the top of my sleeve. It doesn't take much gas and the burp is more like a tiny creaking sound for a few seconds as a series of small bubbles works its way out. Eating or drinking normally brings it on and often I will have to stand up to get the "burp" going. Does anybody know if/when the discomfort subsides or goes away and if gas x will help with that as it is probably due to me swallowing small amounts of air rather than my body generating the gas?

  11. Hi everyone. I had my VSG on 5/25. I’ve had a pretty smooth recovery so far. I am staying with my parents while I recover and my mom checks on my cat at my house every other day to make sure she’s alright. Today when I woke up I felt really good. I sat outside on the deck with my parents’ dog for a little bit in the morning and I felt so happy. But later this afternoon I started thinking about how much I missed my cat and feeling guilty that I haven’t been home for a few days and I started crying out of nowhere. This led to an argument with my mom because she told me I was “acting like a third grader” and well, when you’re upset about something, being told that isn’t ex…

I had Rny about 7 weeks ago and last week at my follow up appointment, they asked me if I was feeling a lot more energetic. I told them that honestly no, I’ve been pretty tired. I have Hashimoto’s, so they did a full blood panel to see if that could be causing the problem or if it was something else. They called me with the results today and it turns out that the issue is actually my blood sugar. It was a 56 when they tested it and that was mid afternoon. I have been feeling dizzy/light-headed some too, but thought I had just gotten up too fast when that happened. They told me to take bites of cracker or another carb like that when my sugar gets too low, but I hate to…

I am 13 days post op. I have had diarrhea for 11 days. I am barely getting fluids in and am hitting the protein benchmark of 90 grams half of the days. The rest of the time I get at least 45g in. My struggle is, the moment I get something in, it comes out! I’ve been tested, by my primary doctor, for everything...negative. I see my surgeon tomorrow for the first time...has not spoken to me on phone...office staff says, “Just drink your liquids and get your proteins in.” Surgeon’s office days I can’t take anything to slow down system. Now for numbers: According to my scale, I was 181lbs when I went in for revision from band to sleeve. Came home with fluid weight o…

  14. I had rny and gallbladder removal May 2nd. First two weeks... great! Water protein in ,no problem. I am 1 day shy of 1 month and doing and feeling miserable. Most days I can get in 35 oz of water approx. But protein is usually less than half or worse. I cannot take vitamins because my stomach is empty and water is very hard to get in somedays, like today. My stomach hurt, I feel overly nauseous. Very close to tears. I typically have a high pain tolerance... but not for nausea. Acid reflux hurts and I am already up to two doses a day. Waiting on doc office to get back to me. I dont know what to do.

Hi everyone, I’m supposed to have my gastric bypass next week on June 5th. I’m currently in school and can only take the two days off for my hospital stay. I’m gonna be on my feet a lot which is good to avoid post op complications but I’m afraid I’m going to get dehydrated or become too tired. I was wondering if anyone went right back to work after the surgery? Any tips, how the pain was, how you dealt with it? Any information would be great! Thanks!

So far I have been able to finish one premier protein bottle, it took me most of the day but yea I got those 30 grams of protein. I bit an inch off a sugar free icee [emoji28] and for dinner I had around 4oz of chicken soup drained and that took me like 30mins to finish. Yo-Yo Girl from New York City

I'm wondering if it's just me, but lately, I have these moments where I don't recognize myself as me. I've sidestepped to avoid someone I saw in my periphery only to realize it was myself in the mirror I was seeing. I've had times sitting around with friends where, I just don't recognize the body I'm looking at. I've taken photos of my holding something and it took a second to realize that was my hand. It's not a bad thing overall, just really really weird and I was curious if it was just me or if others were experiencing the same "not my body" moments.

  18. Hey everyone! My VSG surgery date is set for June 4th, but I feel that my situation is pretty unique in that I'm a graduating high school senior about to go to college. I'll be on a meal plan and will have access to good quality food, so I'm not too worried about that. However, I'll also be in marching band, which means that I have to go to band camp in August. As of now, it sounds like it'll be six days, from noon-10 pm, and we'll only be outside from 6-10 (so I won't be completely dying from the Georgia heat). Since I'll be two months post-op at this point, what advice do you have for me to stay hydrated and make sure I get all my protein while being on someone…

(pedicure tomorrow) I am using more lotion, but just applying to the outside isn't the same! I am wondering if it is the hormone shift, same thing happened when I was pregnant. Could it be the hormones? Is it bc there are no healthy fats in my diet? Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do? Did it get better?

I just finished the final clean out of my closet and I was super upset as I was loading everything into bags to give to good will (some things I just bought not that long ago). I seriously was mourning all of my old clothes that I just can not wear anymore. I couldn't believe that I had dropped so many sizes so quickly. As I was trying stuff on, it blew my mind how much smaller I truly am. I still don't see myself as being that much smaller, but while trying on the clothes in my closet, it finally hit me. I was keeping my water down but could not bring myself to keep much else down. I have been feeling very malnourished, dizzy, spacey, and just all around miserable. Well today was a huge leap forward for me, I was able to get half of a premier protein shake down in about the span of an hour this morning and I am feeling confident I will get 2 down today (which will put me at 60g of protein for the day). Liquids consumed, protein consumed, solid food eaten, bariatric vitamin taken, calcium taken x3 and separately from the bariatric vitamin, Prilosec, my other daily medications. Hey again! I just started soft solids yesterday and found I gained 1-2 pounds. I know it's not a lot but is this the stall phase since I moved away from liquids? Will the weight start dropping again? I just got cleared to start working out with a trainer as well just no core workouts until week 4. So I know more activity will help. But that kinda shocked me to see that so early. Obviously our bodies are like WHAT IS GOING ON so I understand it's just trying to adjust. But this is normal, right? Since week one, Ive had gurgling and throat noises every time I eat, my doctor said it was reflux and put me on Nexium. I think now it’s getting worse, I gurgle and feel the reflux even when I’m drinking water. I do drink coffee in the morning and wondering if that could be making it worse.
