POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

So obviously we all love food or we wouldn’t have been here. So in a effort to help find ways to not be bored during this long phase for most of us. Thought it would be nice to share some soft food phase recipes.

  2. Hi, I am 25+ Years post surgery but have developed some unusual symptoms that have returned with bigger difficulties. Recently developed extremely low iron (2). Having a blood transfusion in a day or two. Extereme amount of pain in stomach and left shoulder. Wondering if you can have ‘gallbladder attacks’ even if it has been removed (2000). This pain has occurred intermittently over the past 10 years; however, it has become chronic over the past year. Have tried various pain meds: tramadol, dilaudid, ibuprofen, tordal, with little to no comfort. I have tried massage, physio (still have full range of motion), been checked for heart issues, many different tests and X-rays. …

This is my second time around. First time I had the sleeve now I have the RNY bypass but it seems that everything I have learned throughout the past couple of years I have thrown out the window. And I mean literally because no matter how hard I try to remember what I should eat I can’t remember what foods to eat now that I am on the liquid diet. Not sure if milk is even OK to drink I’m afraid to try anything. Any advice or recipes

Ok so I read somewhere that drinking "smooth move" tea would help keep you regular. Well I've been lucky enough to be regular but I thought oh I LOVE tea so why not (for good measure) so I drank a nice cup earlier and then I decided to look up the reviews on it and now I'm horrified that I'm in for a night of torture! I read reviews like "it caused me to have the worst cramps I've ever had!", "the cramps are worse than childbirth" "I crapped for hours" "I almost shat myself Inside out" (ok maybe not the last one but that's my fear right now, that and having to sit in a quit room taking finals tomorrow!) So has anyone actually drank this stuff? How did it "go". If I don't …

Hello Everyone! I was blessed to get the sleeve after multiple attempts to lose weight naturally. I’m currently 10 Days post opp and able to handle more fluids than originally stated. I can drink 6-8 ounces in 20 minutes time by sipping and not feel sick. I’m not hitting protein goals bc I’m not hungry and that is hard to sip. Is this normal ? I’ve talked to my dr and he’s not concerned I’ve lost 18 pounds since surgery before the pre-op diet I was 294 the day of surger I was 281 and my follow up was Friday and I weighed 263. Has any one experienced this ? An I still gonna get full once I one to soft foods ?

Hey, so I'm a little more than two weeks out and just started the blended/soft solids portion of my post-op diet. I've found that my stomach feels uncomfortable (full and a little nauseous) after eating nearly every time. I mean, I just eat a tiny bit -- like, a couple bites of tuna or mashed potatoes or casserole, and I make sure the food is well-mixed and smooth and then chew really well before swallowing, but my stomach protests nearly every meal. Is this normal? Am I just getting full? Is it just going to be a bit uncomfortable to eat from now on? I'm allowed to eat up to 3 oz. at a time, but I start feeling sick before I manage that much... I never used to feel …

Hello - this is my first post (sorry it's a bit graphic). I had successful surgery - without complications - a week ago. I've just noticed that one of my wounds is weeping slightly. The fluid coming out of it has a little blood in it, but no pus and I don't have a temperature. The wound has surgical glue on it and isn't covered by a dressing, so I don't like to put anything on it, in case it causes the glue to detach prematurely. I have an appointment with my general practitioner on Monday any way for other reasons - do you think it would be appropriate to wait until then to get it examined?

I'm about 6 days post op now and I'm exhausted. Making sure I get my 64 in a day is a lot harder than I thought though I have been successful at it. 1 ounce every fifteen minutes feels like a fulltime job. I really hope that things normalize at some point and I can just carry a water bottle with me and drink that way. Sorry for the rant but this is just exhausting. Crushing pills is starting to wear on me too. Forgive the rant but I'm just mourning things that I didn't even think about before... The ease of simple tasks like drinking water and take medicines. Reassurances warmly welcome d. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

This might seem stupid, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I'm 4 days post op and was given narcotics. I haven't used them because my pain hasn't warranted it. Instead, I bought children's chewable tylenol and have only had to take it twice since getting home. Just now, I realized that all of my meds are liquid or crushable. Are chewable medications off limits? I feel sort of stupid just assuming they were fine for someone so early in recovery.

I had lap band to sleeve surgery. As a result, I've been having horrible gastric spasms on the left side. Like many I have read the tests show normal results. I've been on neurontin and some muscle relaxers but none seem to work. The pain is like an abdominal spasm and cramp. Its very painful sometimes. Any ideas on what this could be and how to treat it? Has anyone heard of this before?

Just went to my 6 week post-op appointment and now sitting in my car crying. In the last 4 weeks I've lost 6 pounds. SIX! How is that possible? I can only eat 2 oz of food at a time and I eat 3 meals a day with two snacks. Usually right at 1000 calories a day. I always eat protein first. Mostly chicken and usually that is all I can eat but sometimes I add in some tomato or olives. I get between 60-80 grams of protein a day with a protein shake for breakfast and protein water as well. I'm drinking my water and walking at lunch everyday. I even take the stairs to work now!! Im 45 years old and yes I was/am a low BMI and expected to lose slower than those with really high BM…

Hello everyone, I was sleeved on June 25th. I was bending over gently to get something off the floor. I had a pop inside of my stomach where my big incision is. There was pain at the moment of the pop, but not anymore. Should I be worried or did someone experience this. I am going to call my dr in the morning, just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and what was it.

I am looking for advice from people who use food as an emotional crutch, a friend, the only relationship you really have etc. I have always known my obesity since I was 16 was always related to psychological issues and not physiological. I am in therapy and until now I never considered surgery because I knew it was a tool but if deep down I did not choose to get better, surgery was not going to change that. I started researching surgery because the health consequences of the weight are manifesting very seriously. But as scared as I am of diabetes, arthritis, and loss of mobility, for some r…

  29. Hi again everyone! So far I cannot get the chewable vitamins down. I’ve been doing flintstones to compensate at least a little, but I know they’re not enough. In small portions like at Christmas? Or a family outing? 2)Do you have to chew your food to a puree for the rest of your life? 3)Is it normal to not feel restrictions on liquids? 4)Will I ever be able to eat a decent amount when I go out to eat with my family or be able to not take a long time to eat? 5)Is it safe living a full life on low calories? These are just a few things I am curious about. Thank you!

I see people mentioning stalls on here but I was wondering if anyone would be willing to discuss them more in depth. My mom is three weeks post off and is having a stall she dropped 20+ lbs by her two week check up but has been sticking around the same weight since her two week appointment. She has gone from liquid to blended foods, still eating very little at each eating encounter, but is getting her protein in each day. I keep telling her stalls are going to happen but she's getting frustrated. Any advice or pep talks are greatly appreciated She is feeling like a failure. Thanks guys
