I'm about 6 days post op now and I'm exhausted. Making sure I get my 64 in a day is a lot harder than I thought though I have been successful at it. 1 ounce every fifteen minutes feels like a fulltime job. I really hope that things normalize at some point and I can just carry a water bottle with me and drink that way. Sorry for the rant but this is just exhausting. Crushing pills is starting to wear on me too. Forgive the rant but I'm just mourning things that I didn't even think about before... The ease of simple tasks like drinking water and take medicines. Take this time to focus on you. Follow the surgeons orders and the time will pass quickly. I'm two months post surgery and I remember my first days, first month were killers. I had regret every day and the same thoughts as you. I felt like i couldnt drink or eat enough to stay alive!! Just do the best you can in the protein and water requirements. Gradually things got better and I feel myself again. I carry a water bottle and eat my small protein packed meals, if you want to call them meals. Lol. Its gets better. I used all the tools possible, followed all surgeons orders and attended his support group. This surgery is life changing and all the research and information I read could not have prepared me for the mental part of it. Made it through. Things got better. The old saying.... one day at a time. Take care..

@EsoKev it gets easier as time goes by. You'll be back to some semblance of normal within 2 months of surgery.

Are you able to drink more than 1 oz. at a time, or is that as much as you can handle? By 6 days post op, most doctors will let you increase the increments to 2-3 oz. at a time. That lets you get the water in much more quickly. But, only if you can handle it. I would drink my little cup, then stare at the clock for 10 minutes before I could drink another little cup. Made me crazy. It was much easier when the doc. said I didn't have to stick to the 1 oz. measure.

Water and pills are the hardest parts for me as well. The day after surgery when they gave me the 1 oz medicine cup of water I spewed it all back up and thought I was drowning. The nurse made me try again until I got it down. It has become more easy as time passes but it is still a problem for me. I think if your Dr allows you should mix SF drink mixes with the water. That helped me tremendously. AW root beer flavored water is my go to powder mix. Something about that mix goes down smoothly for me, much better than other flavors.

I see my doc tomorrow. I think I could handle more than 1 oz for sure. The water goes down pretty easily. I'll ask.

64 oz?! I guess every doc is different! I can't remember how many I was supposed to get in but I think it was 24-32. But I remember that. I'm almost 3 months out and I STILL feel like getting my fluids is a full time job. The 30-30 rule gets me but drinking more at once is so much easier. I'm still amazed when I see some people here drinking over a gallon of water!

My surgeon said from very beginning to start sipping. Just keep on sipping. No rule as to how much and how fast. Just sip all day and goal is 64 ounces per day.

I was in the same boat in the beginning but it does get easier. now I don't even think about it and i'm able to get it in. I KNOW when I have slipped because I get light headed fast. learn your body's way of telling you what's going on. you can do it!

Hi Kev! This is my first post. I usually browse but I wanted to share as getting my fluids was the hardest part for me. I had two ER visits and one clinic visit for IV fluids because it was such a struggle. This was really my fault. I was sipping too slowly when I could handle more than I thought I could. One day I just decided I was going to really push myself and go for it. I was surprised at what I could handle. Now I can finish a 16.9oz bottle of water in less than 15 minutes.

I’m 3 weeks out. Sleeved on June 13.

Feel things out first, but see if you can push yourself a little more. Good luck!

Hi TeeJay! Thanks! I can relate, if I only drink water it goes down hard and gags me, but if I put in AW Root Beer flavor (SF of course) I can do the 16.9 oz in about 20 minutes. Some people here say do not use flavors because of the artificial sweetener but that has been a godsend for me. Today Friday is 10 weeks exactly since my surgery. Nobody said it would be easy and for those people who think this is an easy way to go, well they are mistaken. But I feel good most days and if I don't it is usually my own fault.

What part of MD?

I was sleeved on June 18 and have found that I can satisfy my water wants and keep from wanting to gulp a bunch at once by sucking on ice cubes. I still get my drinks in but I am thirsty a lot of the time so the ice helps. Also I've had New Whey protein drinks. I put it over about a 48 ounce bottle of ice to dilute it and drink on that during the morning. It has 42g of protein and I get my fluids in easier at the same time.

I saw my surgical team yesterday and was told I'm progressing nicely, though I had to get IV fluids because I was showing some signs of dehydration and come back next week to ensure I'm not dehydrated still. They also said I no longer need to sip since I'm not having any pain, but I just need to pay attention to what my sleeve tells me in terms of STOP. I should be able to get more fluids this was now that I don't need to wait the dreaded 15 minutes per ounce. Should be interesting to see how today goes.
