POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by wjgo,

How dramatic, or unhealthy can weight loss in feet be? I am just 4 months post-op and lost 39% excess weight (based on BMI) and I have noticed me feet are slightly more slender, and a "bump" on my right foot (below that artery) is no longer annoying me so much I skip the shoe lace hole for long walks. I am still the same shoe size, just my feet seem slightly less "bulky." More importantly, I noticed what appears to be some potential loose skin developing on the outside bases on both my "pinky" toes. Does this become a problem down the road? I know about loose skin, but loose skin in feet would seem like more of a problem. I have always had athlete foot problems, so th…

Since post - op i am 28lbs down, weight loss is on stall. Not a very good progress. I started eating everything but very very less sugar. No cheese and less oil. I ear crabs but not too much. If i drink water after eating, i throw up everything. That happens once every few days when i can't resist having water. I feel super hungry but mentally and even before i have 2 3 bites i feel full. And that's not a worry thats how it is supposed to be but not having good weight loss is making me go crazy. Have not started work out yet. 1.5 week back i had a normal checkup with my family doctor and he said not to start gym not even cardio for 10 more days because to hernia. I …

Hi all. Had my one week check up today. Down ten pounds, hydrated, doing well pain wise and tolerating liquids plus ice pops cottage cheese and was advised I can now try egg whites and veges. Feels like a victory. One week ago I was on these boards crying and ready to back out of the surgery-terrified. So glad I listened to so many of you and stuck with it. My life is changing for the better already. I wish the same for all of you.

Hi everyone! This is my first post and I’m feeling a little desperate. I am 8 months post op with the gastric sleeve. ( Almost 100 pounds down!!!) As soon as I started eating solids in January I would get some discomfort and pressure in my chest. Sometimes it would even feel like the food was coming back up my throat. Not painful but uncomfortable. It got slightly better but was still present at my six month post op appointment. The surgeon thought I might have some narrowing in my stomach, a stenosis, so he sent me to do a barium swallow. The radiologist didn’t see anything on the images but my surgeon thought he could see some narrowing. I did an EGD with balloon di…

  7. I’m feeling really down and not sure what happened. Did I have unreasonable expectations? I had sleeve surgery on 6/13 weighing 306 lbs!! It will be two weeks ago tomorrow-and have lost 10 lbs. I realize 10 lbs. of weight loss is something to be happy about, but in the first two weeks after a sleeve surgery??? Shouldn’t this be my highest weight loss of any period after surgery???? I have been drinking water, propel, crystal light and chicken broth only for the last 13 days and that has netted only 10 lbs. of weight loss??? What’s it going to be like when I start protein shakes and puréed foods—will I even lose at all? I’m feeling so angry and disappointed. My biggest fea…

So I had my surgery last Wednesday (7/10/18). I've been able to keep everything down and I'm not nauseous but when ever I drink just the littlest bit of something the top of my stomach hurts and it feels stuck in my chest. Does anybody else have this problemand if so do you have solutions? I'm going to the doctors Thursday but my doctor doesn't have the best bed side manners so I thought I might just check here first. hi- i had the gastric sleeve on monday and was discharged yesterday (tuesday) afternoon. i think i was so focused on getting approved for surgery and overcoming my nerves to make it through it, that i didn't give a ton of thought regarding the post-op. i figured i'd feel tired and sore, but not like this. it's now day 3, the pain is excruciating when i get in/our of bed. last night i discovered that a reclining chair in our office is easier to get in/out of so i've been spending most of my time here. i'm still incredibly sore/in pain, but am staying on top of taking my liquid tylenol every 6 hours and pain meds every 4 (as needed). i've also started taking my vi…

I’m coming up on my 1 yr surgery anniversary and I’m down 170 lbs (yay!). But recently I am being more and more hungry more frequently. I’m still losing a few pounds a month but I’m really concerned about my increase in hunger/eating/calories. I’m probably averaging 1400 calories a day. Is this normal?! I’m so stressed!!

  12. Hi all. Had sleeve done on the 10th. Currently worked my way to protein shake for breakfast along with drinking water all day in small cups. Also eat ice pops and jello. Haven’t tried a second shake for lunch but I’m hungry. Want to try cottage cheese or yogurt. I see my surgeon on Wednesday-will ask if I can progress. Occasionally drink broth. Tolerating everything well. No nausea. Thank god. Anyone else moved to cottage cheese or yogurt already day 5?

So I'm at work and was at lunch, 3 wks post op and was having small bites of chicken breast that my team ok'd. I suppose it was too dry because after about 4 bites I felt as though it was caught in my chest and I barely made it to the bathroom before I threw it back up and man did it hurt!! I don't want to waste extra calories or carbs on dressings if I don't have to right now but I wanna eat the chicken for the protein. Any suggestions? I don't wanna have to go through that again!!

Hello all, I am just curious on coffee intakes. I have yet to have any coffee but I miss it so much. Before surgery I would have about three cups a day. I went completely cold turkey in February before my surgery. I know I am not supposed to have it, but I can’t see myself living without it. My favorite was a venti iced caramel mochiatto with extra caramel drizzle. Java chip frap, or mocha frap. I know that’s about 800+ calories each and lord knows way more sugar than allowed so I’m trying to find healthier alternatives. I am just wondering how long did it take you before trying to have coffee post-op? What are some of your favorite go to coffee drinks today that …

I called them over this weekend because I was so frustrated, and I was told to take a little benefiber with my liquids. That's doing nothing. Anyone else experience this after surgery? Sorry about the rant, but I'm just tired, annoyed, and feeling lots of other emotions.

Two days out and feeling so much better!! I cannot speak highly enough about my surgeon, Dr Perez and the Oasis hospital in TJ. Everyone has been wonderful. First night was rough, as expected, primarily due to gas pain. So glad I brought a heating pad and abdominal binder. Not sure if the simethicone drops actually did anything, but they make my mouth taste like a day spa, which was nice :) Although my stomach is grumbling, I’m not remotely hungry. It’s going to be a challenge to remember to hydrate, I can tell. Heading home tmrw. No regrets.

However, my dad has chosen to give up his fight against cancer and is leaving hospice to be at home until his time comes. As I’m approaching my half way weight loss goal I was wondering if anyone has come across surprise expenses that they really didn’t factor in. I knew clothing, all the undergarments and potentially shoe replacement were going to add up. Let alone potential surgery to fix some sagging skin. But what’s caught me off guard is the fact my skin is way dryer (or maybe it’s I’m 40+) so I needed to change/up my moisturizer game for not only my face but body. The other one is I’m going to have to get my wedding ring resized. It’s starting to slip off easily so I’ve moved it to my middle finger (which feels weird) but eventually as I get closer to my “goal” it and a fe…

I had a band over bypass surgery 18 days ago and I am experiencing some serious pain when bending over, standing up fom seated position or sitting myself down. All is fine when sat or standing. I have two palpable lumps under the skin on my tummy. One above my belly button which is the port I assume and the other is just below my left ribs. This is about the size and shape of a large egg. This is where the pain is. Well deeper inside/under the lump. I'm starting to worry that something is wrong as the pain is worsening rather than getting better. I have had severe siatica in my left leg and have been taking Gabapentin (Neurotin) for 2 years. It controls the pain and tingling in my leg but I’m left with significant loss of strength in my leg. The neurosurgeon won’t do surgery until I’m down to 250. I just had a sleeve 10 days ago. He thinks that significant weight loss may resolve the whole situation and thus need for surgery. Anyone else had their similar situation be fixed by their weight loss?

Are there any weight loss rates one should be hoping g to achieve? I would imagine that such a rate would be a function of excess weight for men and women. I am almost 4 calendar months post-op and I started at 164 lbs excess weight, and have been averaging 3.8 lbs /week last 6 weeks, pretty straight trendline. Is there a way I can know if I am exceeding typical goals, or faling short, and a way to see how those parameters change as I approach my goal weight? So far I’ve had one egg with a slice of bacon, that was my “brunch”. I plan to have a premier protein shake at 3:00pm and for dinner at 6:00PM a few slices of salsalito turkey with one babybel cheddar cheese. That’s what a typical day looks like for me. How about you? This is well under 800cals and has approximately 5 carbs total for the day.
