POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. So, I had bypass a little over 3 weeks ago, lost like 14 pounds the first week but have been stalled since then. Surgery weight was 265 pounds, have been at 251 for the past 2 weeks. I am currently on pureed/soft foods. I ran my daily food through MyFitnessPal: Calories 491 Carbs 36 Fat 10 Protein 71 Sugar 8 I am taking in 4 tablespoons (1/4 cup) of food at each meal. Any idea what might help? Thanks!

Okay, so one of my surgery buddies is post op. Some of the things she is sharing is disturbing to me. I personally think this is crazy. But im curious to see what the norm is on average here for post op pain management. So when you were out of surgery what was the pain management for you? Where you on morphine drip? Liquid pain medication? Pills?

This is like the 4th time asking this question. I've been having gastric cramping on the left side. The cramping can be very bad at times, I was given gabapentin as a pain medicine but it barely works. The cramping goes into my back and it helps to exercise or drink fluids. Has anyone else experienced this type of pain? It started the same day I got the first lap band surgery. Its very frustrating for me.

This is my third day in the hospital. First day was surgery, apparently everything went well. I didn't need a catheter or a drain or anything else. However, on the second day, threw up various pain medicines all day long. They finally just took me off the pain meds because I feel better without them. (I felt so terrible, I was genuinely regretting my decision to have surgery for a few hours there. Nausea is the woooorst.) It's the third day now, I just woke up from a fairly deep sleep -- slept a solid nine hours, I think. That's good, right? My stomach still hurts, and I'm still nauseous, but feel better than yesterday for sure. My doctor is going to visit,…

I know it might be weird to be this excited about this, but FINALLY, 39 days after VSG I am going to hit my 70-90g protein goal (72g), my fluid intake of at least 64oz (probably going to be around 85-105oz), my calories goal of 800-1000 (912) and keep my carbs under 100g (75 carbs, 70 net carbs)!!!! I’m so so so happy!!! After all the horrible stuff I went through post surgery (I’m talking like 4 and 1/2 weeks of misery) I’m FINALLY feeling like I’m getting there! Up until now I’ve been soooo tired from being sick, but I’m determined to get outside tonight when it cools down for an hour power walk with one of the doggos. Hey all. Starting weight was 364. I had gastric bypass 5/11/18, and at my 1 week post op appointment, I was 24 pounds down. I’m assuming mostly water weight. Today, 6/21/18, I weighed in at 331. I’m a little disheartened by this number, and wanted some opinions. Am I expecting too much too quickly? I feel like the first week kind of set my standard unrealistically high. Thanks in advance!

I asked my dad and he said my grandmother used to do an Apple juice cleanse followed by Epsom salt to dissolve/pass the gallstones.. has anyone ever tried this? Really don’t want to have to go thru another surgery so soon :-/ my hair just finally stopped falling out and the gas pains from surgery sucks so bad. Help!

Hi all! So, I'm week 3 into my pureed food stage and I'm BORED! My diet is one month pureed, one month soft, and then regular food. I've been eating greek yogurt, hummus, eggs, mashed bananas, almond milk, sugar free pudding, sugar free Popsicles, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese (I did the notorious ricotta bake, I didn't really like it), and sometimes I will have a creamed soup. I have been spooning on occasion other things like guacamole, or rice pudding (both pureed with no chunks), but I still am craving other things! Does anyone have additional suggestions? I just want ideas for quick snacks, or things to make with less than 5 ingredients. I do not have much time…

  22. I’m 6 days out of surgery today and I haven’t been able to keep anything down. Prior to today I’ve had no issues. I was actually getting about 500 calories and 45-50g of protein a day. Today, no go. Every little sip of everything feels like it gets stuck in my chest, I start to slime, and then about 30-45 minutes later, I barf up whatever little sip I had. It’s strange because it’s not that my stomach contracts when I throw up the sip, it’s like I finally burp and it just slides right back up from where it got stuck in my chest. Should I wait it out a little or should I contact my surgeon? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. HW: 311 SW: 255 VSG CW: 246.6 Fi…

Doctor bill and procedure bill is $700. That's just the EOBs that have come in. No bills yet. I was expecting $2,000 total my share. But this has been way more. I'm just wondering if it is possible to stretch my sleeve right away due to not being filled up on liquids. My dietician says to have 4oz of liquids at a time, however I feel like I can easily fit 6-8oz. With pureed I stop at 4 oz but I feel like I could've gone 1-2 oz more. I'm terrified of ruining my sleeve so soon. Does anybody have any answers on if this can ruin it so early on or any advice on avoiding this hunger? Note: I do not get all of my fluids in and I don't go over 400 calories. On one occasion I reached 700. Since starting puree I've been weighing everything to exactly 4oz I just feel like I could eat more.

For whatever reason, I cannot break the 90kg mark or get to Onederland. I'm starting to think this is as good as it gets. This is my set point weight. I have tried to break the stall. Greetings! This is probably a very silly question, but would it be appropriate to practice a Keto diet once past the 2 or 3 month post surgery? My nut and advice from the surgery center recommend limiting carbs, and of course, getting at least 60 grams of protein each day. If that is the case, wouldn’t the Keto diet be the natural path forward? Any thoughts, opinions, research, etc. are appreciated!

  35. Man, solid food and pureed food are totally different As a quick background statement, I'm one month post-op and have had no issues tolerating food thus far. Never had any issues keeping stuff down, no nausea, no pain. Okay - so I started the solid, soft food stage a couple days ago. Nothing too impressive yet, some egg, some very tiny bites of chicken, 1.5 small potato wedges, half a small falafel. But tonight I finally had my first actual meal in a restaurant which was salmon and a couple bites of rice pilaf.
