POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by lex2287,

I had my gallbladder out on Thursday and have been extremely fatigued, way more than I was with my VSG 7 months ago.. not sure what is different but I sleep all day and am still extremely tired when I wake up. I never felt this way with my sleeve.. I was back to work 2 days after my sleeve and had a decent amount of energy. My gallbladder surgery has literally drained what life I had left in me.. ready for a nap again after sleeping 13 hours last night.

I don't feel hungry, don't feel full when I eat. I feel like I can eat more than I should be eating although I am eating what my surgeon tells me to. How do I know when I am consuming too much food. I am afraid I am gonna stretch out my stomach. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi everyone! I am 1 Month and 5 days post op from VSG! I know when you have a lot to lose, the weight comes off a lot quicker in the beginning. I started my journey at BMI of 35 and I now BMI of 31(total of 13.2lbs). I weigh myself every morning and the scale doesn't seem to be moving. I would lose 0.4lbs and the next morning, I would gain 0.6lbs then lose 1.2lbs, then gain 1.4lbs....it is getting so frustrating. should I just stop weighing myself? how do you keep track? I HATE the scale and it is really ticking me off! I also can't help but to weigh myself every morning. LOL...it's like an addiction. How do you keep yourself motivated through this process. I …

I wanted to have a thread for the several of us with the same surgery date. How are you all doing? We are about 10 days out. I've lost about 20 lbs, but the vast majority was from the liquid diet Pre-surgery. I have a few more liquid diet days and then have 2 weeks blender food starting Friday. I feel pretty good. Still tired a bit and my stomach still is black and blue and a little swollen. Other than that I'm fine. How are you guys?

I originally set a goal of 190 based on the fact that I had previously been at 185 and my ribs were clearly visible. Now as I approach that goal I’ve been talking with my team about when to stop (assuming I can). The nutritionist is fine with where I am now (206 down almost 100) and doesn’t want me under 190. BMI is totally wrong for me (lots of muscle, big build and long torso makes me heavy for my height). Wife thinks I’m thin enough. I’d like to get into onderland just because. I think fitness and size wise I’m good. I run 3.5 mi (10 min miles) a couple times a week and it’s not too hard, bike a lot. Shirt size went from xxxl to M and pants from 44 to 32. …

Has anyone had issues with their JP drain? This is my 2nd time having one, as I was sleeved in 2014. The drain was gross but not too much of an issue. I converted to bypass on 6/26 due to reflux, and it still just seemed like a necessary nuisance. Last night was my first night at home, and it was hard to lay in bed or get comfy. I missed having the bar above to grab onto, to help me reposition. I emptied my drain last night around 11, and I woke up soaked. It went through the bandages, binder, pajamas, sheets, mattress pads, etc. The drain itself didn’t leak, but the wound. I called my home nurse and she says I’m okay as long as I’m not actively bleeding. I’m not but it s…

I’ve been reading over a lot of questions and comments and I see people saying how they’ve lost a lot of weight. I went into surgery at 260lbs came out of surgery at 266lbs got back to 260 a week later due to water weight... so I was told. At my follow up two week appointment today I have only lost 6 pounds! I understand that my body is healing and I can’t compare myself to others but it’s so hard not to feel crappy, and scared that this isn’t working.. 12. I was sleeved May of 2017. No complications other than some dehydration issues. I have lost 137lbs and gained a whole new life. Beginning about 3 months ago, I began experiencing quite a few digestive problems. I had no problem with having regular BMs post op but that all began to gradually change. I now go days without going. I haven’t went since Sunday and before that it was 8 days prior. My intestines feel awful. I have really bad heartburn from being so backed up. This is actually kind of hilarious to me. I have been on my program perfectly since my surgery two weeks ago but weird stuff is happening when I sleep. ? Last week, I had a dream that my nephew had made a strawberry cake (strawberry flavored cake and strawberry buttercream) and I woke up just as I was finishing a piece in my dream. And a couple of nights ago, I dreamt that I’d had a SIP of ginger ale (Vernor’s, if anyone cares) and I woke up feeling so guilty that it took a minute to realize that I hadn’t actually done it. ??. Anyone else having food dreams? Is it just because I’m dying for soft food? Amanda

I am 5 day post op. I had gastric sleeve on 6/19 and was sent home 6/20. I thought that was extremely soon. Anywho, I am having random stomach pains. They remind me of the pain felt when trying first meal post surgery. It happens so sporadically throughout the day. Even my pain meds can’t keep up. I’ve been told it’s normal but geez this is so painful. I do ensure that I walk and I’m getting about 30 oz of fluid on a good day. Is anyone else experiencing this? Hi all! I’m currently three weeks with my little banana and I’m on soft food. So yesterday I tried an egg scrambled and I felt rubbish. So I just had a couple of ounces of cottage cheese for lunch and dinner and my tummy settled. So today I really didn’t feel great light headed and generally lethargic so I decided to make some extra lean mince beef and it went down fine. I took it super easy and I feel great. I feel warm and I have energy. I just thought it was weird that I couldn’t stomach one soft scrambled egg but I managed a serving spoon of mince? The body is crazy. Total loss since post op diet is 36lbs!

Probably worlds stupidest question. I lost a lot of weight since my surgery in December.(80lb) I had a pretty big booty before, now its very boney. Every time I do floor exercises my tailbone hurts so bad. I avoid floor exercises, as well as sitting on the floor. I doesn't hurt during other activities or sitting on soft things. Is this normal when you first lose weight. Does my body just have to get use to the lack of padding. I know this is a very stupid question. My husband and daughter say it cause I'm skinny now. So I was wondering if it really was normal.

I know some people don’t get hungry, others feel a little hunger but I get hungry HUNGRY! I feel almost the same hunger pangs that I used to get before I had my surgery yet that doesn’t bother me too much because when I do eat I can only have a few bites before restriction takes over regardless of how hungry I feel. With that being said, my issue is how long it takes my stomach to send me the message that I’m full. So let me explain.. I get hungry, I eat, I feel the restriction, I stop. I’m still hungry but I can’t eat anymore.…

starting this surgery they made it seem as though you cant eat or you will feel full however I never feel full just self-conscious that my stomach is stretching and I stop myself from eating. I've been having breakfast essentials, I had them in the hospital and fell in love. I can "eat" like 2 of these in a day I love the variety chocolate flavors, also I was having creamof soups and like broth but it literally made me want to throw up after day 4 and I ran out of shakes so I just didn't eat at all besides water from day 4-6. I tried several different regular foods none of which went down okay like eggs, tuna, steamed fish, babyfood banana, a mushed up pancake, etc event…

I’ve been keeping the sites clean and to see how much it was leaking I put a bandage over the 2 spots before going to sleep last night. However, tonight, I was just sitting on the couch and got up to take my jello bowl to the kitchen - I’d only been sitting for about 45 minutes - and got so dizzy that I had to call my husband from the other room because I thought I was going to pass out. It passed but it really just freaked me out. I have been getting my fluids in, I thought, but could this be a sign of being dehydrated? Or something else? It’s really got me a bit nervous.

I'm 4 days post-op Gastric Sleeve, and have gone home. I'm having this weird fluttery skip-and-hop sensation just below my breast-bone at seemingly random, though maybe more just after drinking water (sipping from a bottle). It almost feels like internal hiccups. When it happens, I almost can't breathe for a half-second -- think hiccups -- before it calms down. It's rather painful in the way that coughing is painful on the more-sensitive side of my stomach. Is this normal? I'm thinking it might be some sort of gas issue, but am also worried because the sensation is so close to my heart/lungs. I'm allowed to be paranoid four days after life-altering surgery, right? Bu…
