Wondering about calories

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am 3 weeks post ds surgery. I am doing good but I cant stand any more Protein Shakes. I can get all my Protein in through food but I am wondering if I am getting too many calories. Is 800 too many calories for one day? I am exercising every day.

Didn't you receive a nutrition outline of the various eating phases after surgery? If not just google it online - there is tons of information for guidelines of nutrition and calories in the phases post surgery.

800 calories is fine 3 weeks post op. you are doing good especially if you are already working out every day. if you are working out and burning 300 calories in your work out that means you are 500 calories a day. I would not be worried at this point. The guideline is 500-800 3 weeks out and when you get to the soft foods and after that its 600-900 calories. But remember that you should factor in the calories you burn from your workouts for your real daily caloric in take.

Thanks BajanSleeve! I did get lots of information from the nutritionist, but no mention of calories. Everything was on what you can and cant eat, Protein and Water goals.

A lot of programs, including mine, don't focus on calories. The theory is, if you eat your Protein first, veggies second, and carbs third, and only eat 3-5 times per day, then your calories will automatically be inline.

I think you are probably OK with 800 calories, but keep in mind that you don't want that to trend too far forward. I eat 1200 calories on a regular diet, and things really start to add up when you get to soft foods. We are both short people, and if we were regular weight, probably wouldn't need as many calories as someone taller. I can't tell if you are male or female, but gender makes a difference as well.

Just caution that you don't increase too much from there. I know mine went from 400-500 to 800 in soft food stage. It was amazing how quickly it happened and without effort. It wasn't like I was eating more, just that the foods contained more calories.

if you're following the post op guidelines, then you'll be fine. I had to read mine several times to remember it all. Careful with work outs - don't do too much too soon. make sure you're cleared for vigorous activity.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
