Intense burning pain, black mucus, and spitting A LOT!

Recommended Posts

Okay I know it's a little gross, but a few hours ago I ate some chicken (I made sure to chew really really well and I only had about two small bites) because I've been trying to introduce soft foods into my diet. Well it had a little bit of spice in it and since then, I've been having a really giant and painful burning sensation all throughout my esophagus and chest. I've been spitting out a lot of extra mucus and burping a bunch.

Just a few minutes ago, I noticed some black, thick, mucus come up during my burping/spitting/gagging and there's quite a bit of it now. They are like small little globs and are kind of blackish-brownish. I just gagged up a really big glob and I'm starting to feel a lot better, not as nauseated and not as fatigued, and the burning seems to just come and go within a timespan of a few seconds. I tried to drink some Water and it helps a little bit but it just feels so cold. I also dry heaved once but all that happened was that I spit up some mucus but there was definitely a small amount of blood.

I called my doctor and the only thing that he said that if it continued to get worse then to go to the ER, which would be very hard since I'm out of state right now. He couldn't really tell me what it was and I was just wondering if anyone out there might know what it could be and how to get rid of this painful burning.

Thank you all so much!!

You don’t mention how far out post op you are.

Have you tried something for heartburn to see if that helps?

Thanks so much for your response! I'm actually 3 weeks post op. And I just went to go get some heartburn meds! Fingers crossed!

I’m 20 days post op and on purée. You may have overdone it with the chicken. I have been making my own puréed food with my nutri ninja.

Not sure what your diet progression is but I have another few days before I can eat moistened shredded chicken and I’ll be hesitant to try it. Even my purée chicken salad is very filling and I cannot eat much if it.

Hope you feel better soon.

Im 5.5 weeks out and I still havent tried chicken. I dont think chicken is a very good idea to try early, my surgeon has a vendetta against the stuff as its the most frequent thing his patients have trouble eating (not to mention I definitely wouldnt consider chicken a soft food unless its like a puree).

Most likely its just a mistake and a learning experience though. Early on I tried drinking something with too much crap dissolved in it and I got all kinds of bizarre violent reactions (dry heaving coughing intense pain etc). Just learn from it and be more cautious going forward

Alicia, the blood (both black mucus and frank blood) concerns me a lot. I would be extra careful if I were you, and drink only fluids for at least a couple of days if you can. I know that sucks with the holiday.

I really don't like this situation. Please be careful. If you keep spitting up the brown/black globs, or if you have dark tarry stools...you should seek treatment ASAP.

Also, keep track of your temperature and heart rate. If they start to raise significantly, it's time to go to the ER.

The black mucas makes me think blood. I would be concerned, I would probably go get checked out, even if you are out of state, just to be sure. I had a violent stomach bug when I was 7 months post op (farther out than out than you I know) but even then I didn't bring up any dark color mucas or blood and I was vomiting every 1/2-1 hour for a whole day. I can't think of what else, other than small blood clots the black mucas could be

Hi.....

My Bypass was on 11.13.17 & I've been coughing so much....I gag & up comes this White foamy spit like. I haven't slept at all this past night & have done nothing else all day except gagging up this stuff. It's really wearing me down!!! My surgeon just says, the body is still getting used to all the changes & this too will pass. WHEN? Is my question. Anyone else doing this?

Looking for help................... Please!!!!!

Thank you all for your responses! The blood stopped after that night and my doctor recommended I backtrack to liquids for a few days which helped a lot. The burning sensation was indeed due to stomach acid which wasn't really helped by antacids but I notice that very bland and blended foods didn't cause the same symptoms. Even though my dietitian has been recommending that I try to get on solid foods, I've been taking it very slow in order to see what i'm able to tolerate.

Again, thanks so much for all the responses and concern! You are all awesome!

And, to Deeme, I was kind of spitting up the same white foamy saliva and still do sometimes if I eat something my body doesn't really tolerate well. When you eat, try taking very small bites of bland food and make sure your spacing out your bites to about one every 4-6 minutes. Yeah, it will take a while to eat and chew but at the end of the day it's better for your body. Try going back to liquids for a few days to see if it passes. Maybe try some antacids cause for me, the spitting and gagging is usually due to extra stomach acid splashing up, the antacids didn't work for me but it couldn't hurt too much for you to try. Hope you feel better soon!

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
