Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by ammthegr8,

I had surgery July 2nd (Monday). I am having the hardest time getting anything down because I have no desire drink anything....even though my mouth is dry! All of the Protein drinks that I liked before surgery now gross me out. I've found some 2.9 oz shots that have 24 grams of protein in them that I'm making myself use 3 times a day...but it's hard! I keep reading people who say they are dreaming of when they can start on mushies...but I'm dreading it! I don't want anything! Has anyone ever experienced this?

  2. Started by init4me,

Hey 11 days out and I'm having some pretty good mood swings. My husband probably doesn't know what to do with me. Don't get me wrong...he's been great in being my nurse, I'm just having these up and down mood swings. Anyone else?

  3. I'm drinking Atkins advantage drinks, there the best drink that I've tried so far. I had the option to drink: Ensure, Atkins or Mucel milk. I can't stand Ensure and the Mucel milk was way to expensive for my taste. So far so good no head hungar, or grumbbling stomach. I have 6lbs to loose before my surgery on July 12 out of the 20lbs that my surgen wants me to loose. I know I can do this 2 week diet one day at a time is my motto.-

  4. Started by NuStyle,

  7. Today is day 9 of my pre-op diet, and I've been doing very good. Not cheated at all. Today I had to fast for my EGD and got to start eating about 12:30pm, so got behind on my bariatric advantage shakes, I've had about 500 calories today and none of my diet food sounds good. I just want like a grilled chicken breast or something, nothing crazy, nothing with sugar or carbs, I just want some flavor in my mouth.

  8. So no one seems to have any clue what's wrong with me but for the past week I've been CRAZY sick. Not only can I not keep anything down but every time I eat I feel like I'm gonna die... ugh sharp pains, hot flashes, can't move... blah blah blah So I've only been consuming non carbonated beverages for the past week.... Ready and SILVER LINING 1)I've lost a few pounds ssss red hott over here!! Yeah!!! and (my main point) 2) it wasn't as painful as I would have imagined!!! I thought to myself "come surgery time... I'm totally kicking this liquid diets ass!!!!" I got this in the bag.... ohhhh yeah! Ok I'm tired and rambling a bunch of nonsense forgive me. But still... YAY!

  9. Started by augustkiwi,

So, I was doing good...until today...I was feeling so weak and looking at a protein shake made me want to vomit...I ate a grilled chicken salad from Jack n the box....hell yea I feel guilty and mad at myself...I'm too close to fail at this point...uuuugh... I have no plans on messing up anymore and I hope I didn't make my liver swell or whatever it does...the salad had 11 carbs and 37g of protein so I hope even if it was a mistake that it wasn't that bad. :/

  10. Started by TheRealMeIsHere!,

I'm doing everything right. Thought the carbs (like watermelon, broccoli and lettuce) were causing slow weight loss. Eliminated them (on the advice of NUT), lost 5 lbs in a week, then...STALL. All my life, I have had a hard time losing weight. Even at 17, when my Dr. put me on a 1,000 calorie diabetic diet (I don't and never had diabetes) the weight would not come off till I eliminated most food groups, and ate less than 500 calories per day. I also walked at least 2 hours per day. Now I have a Protein shake in the morning-17 gms protein, 100 cals lots of Water and Crystal Light Lunch-1/4-1/3 cup of some kind of lean protein food more water and Crystal Light dinne…

  11. Started by jusstice,

Hi, I am in the first stages of my journey, currently at 275. I had my first Dr visit and NUT visit. We are going for the 90 day plan for my insurance. My NUT has put me on a modified pre-op diet as of now. Funny thing, she did it before she realized that I was doing the 90 day as opposed to 6 months. Was she going to have me do it for that long? Is that normal? I get three low fat, low carb protein drinks, a small meal, and a snack per day. I know they want to shrink the liver, but this seems likes it's going to be really long time.

Hi, y'all. I'm going to a 4th of July BBQ on Wednesday and told the hostess I would be glad to bring a side dish. Of course, I was thinking I could bring something I could eat on the Mushy Food / Week Three Stage since I doubt they're going to be grilling up Protein Shakes on the grill for me. Any suggestions for a side dish, other than mashed potatoes?

  15. Hello all, I start the purée phase tomorrow *cant wait* and am looking for some low carb recipes or suggestions. Thanks!

  17. I just don't know what to eat anymore, everything I put in my mouth it comes back up. Please, I need help. I am 23 days post-op. Johanna

  18. Started by missmachine,

I'm so bored with broth, pudding, jello, and other mushy liquids. I cannot wait to eat eggs and soft cheeses and meats, and I still have one more week until I can do so! All around me still, are the foods I (used to) love! I have been debating on chewing up some stuff and spitting it out! I am starving and mourning food. Going nuts. How do you deal with head hunger?? The "foods" I am bored w/ don't even taste good to me. I just want some actual food! I feel like I am being punished! This blows!

  19. Started by lil4heartz,

Does anyone know any place besides your surgeons office to get it? I just trying not to pay almost $250 for 12 day supply.

  20. Started by Ang,

I was so excited to have real food again after four weeks of shakes. I'm two weeks post op. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting (other than while in the hospital). Came home from the doc, fixed one egg, two tbls grits. Timed myself, ate slow, chewed chewed chewed. Used a baby spoon. Didn't finish - stopped when full. Immediately lost most of it. The rest came later when I drank a sip of tea. My mom freaked and wanted me to call the doctor, I told her I'd try baby food tomorrow before I called them - is this normal? I just want to alleviate her fears ( and mine a little too, no lie).

I am wondering how much is ok to drink in an hour? I try to get in 8 ounces an hour, but I am worried that its too much. I am getting about 40 ounces a day and I know its not enough, but do most of you just have a bottle of water attached to your hand at all times. I feel like all I do is drink all day long!

I am so disheartened with my surgery. Was sleeved exactly 6 weeks ago. I had lost 15 pounds at week 5. Was informed by my doctor that 3 pounds a week was great. Well today, 6 weeks, I've gained 1 pound. I already feel like I'm slowly losing this weight but to gain? Does anyone have any feedback? Please?

Y'all are going to love me for this one.... Slice a banana up and freeze it overnight. Put banana in blender/food processor with a few drops of vanilla and skim milk (just enough milk to get the bananas moving in the blender. start with a little and add more as needed). Once it's pureed, it's the consistency of soft serve ice cream. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

I need to lose weight before I get approved and I'm having such a hard time. I'm good for a week, eating right going to the gym but the weekend hits and I'm bad. I don't go to the gym and I make bad choices. I have PCOS which makes it harder to lose and I do have depression. I'm taking Zoloft. I just need someone to talk to that understands.

As I reflect on the past few months I really believe this was the best choice for me. I am checked in at the hospital and changed and I know by the grace of God everything will be fine. I wish everyone being sleeved today a safe surgery and speedy recovery. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

What am I doing wrong? I started losing weigh one year ago, on Weight Watchers. Had surgery on 1/23/2012. I lost 45lbs before surgery and 57lbs after. I eat 600-800 calories per day Plenty of liquid, mostly Water. Exercise 1-2 hours/day-walking, hiking, Zumba, recumbant stationary bike, etc (and...rarely sit still for long) Only getting 40-50- gms of Protein most days Eating some fruits and veggies between meals Most months I lose only 6-10lbs 275lbs May 2011 230lbs day of surgery 173.8 today 58.8lbs to go What am I doing wrong? Should I eat fewer calories? My body ALWAYS needed less than most people. As a teen, my doc put me on a 1000 calorie/day diet.…

  33. Started by Billie,

I am new to the forum with a surgery date of July 2nd and on my 4th day of the liquid diet. Things are going pretty well except I cannot stand the taste of the Protein shakes; I even tried mixing them with crystal light which helped a little but I guess it is what it is. So far within the first 3 days I have lost 9.5lbs, not to bad I don’t think. Husband and kids are being very supportive however it is a little hard to not sit down at the dinner table with them as this is something we make sure we do in our house no matter what. I just keep the big picture in mind. Here's to another day of Protein shakes and crystal light; I did have chicken broth last night and it w…

Its now been a week and a half and I haven't stepped on a scale, but I feel like this isn't working for me. I lost 97 pounds pre op and now kind of feel like I expected so much more by this point. Is it normal to feel like I have failed already? I'm kind of depressed.

  35. Started by notime,

I think I understand the reason for not drinking after meals, but why no fluids for 30 minutes before meals?

  36. Started by Failure,

I'm sorry if this has been asked or outlined somewhere. I couldn't seem to find it but maybe that's due to frustration at the moment. I'm just wondering what exactly is the difference between what is considered a full liquid and what is a puree. Because technically puree is the stage after a full liquid stage, but you can make a lot of things into a creamy texture using a puree setting on a blender (at least on mine you can) depending on ingredients of course but I'm just wondering, what makes the difference and how do you know what is ok for what stage? If there's no soft chunks or anything, is that still technically okay for a full liquid stage?

  37. Started by achristie,

Well here I am 21 days post op and let me just say it was a crazy experience. I noticed for the first week and a half I wasn't getting nearly enough Water or Proteins. I was so tired, and grumpy! I guess you can say I completely avoided the puréed stage of my diet for the sole fact that I could not fathom pureeing a chicken breast or any type of meat for that matter. Ugh. Anyways my diet for the past few days have been as follows: (mind you i barely finish it all) Breakfast: An egg white A sausage link Lunch: 1/2 c tuna (over a time period) A yogurt Dinner: Anything soft that is being served I did notice that when I tried to eat chicken last night I was …

  38. Today we had chinese food. I didn't know what to order I opted for egg drop and out of habit I said egg drop wonton. I fished out all the bits of egg and now I want to eat a small piece of the wonton. I even broke a few open and ate the meat inside. But I'm afraid to bite the wonton. Is a wonton in the same category as bread, rice and Pasta. Stats: I am 5 weeks post op. I'm going on my 2nd week of soft foods then I'm on regular food.

  42. So I am 9 days post op. I am happy with my decision, but am finding it hard to not eat!! I have to make breakfast, lunch and dinner for my kids daily, and I find myself wanting what they are eating, not this "full-liquid stage" stuff anymore!! I know the food stages and guidelines are there for a reason, but man, I just want something of substance to chew on and eat!! Any advice/thoughts?

  43. Im a lil nervous now. It is on. I'm excited but the support of my family is lacking. Their negativity is starting to wear on me. Idk if this has happened to anybody else who went through this, any advise would be appreciated. I feel like I can't lean on anyone for support. I know I'm better off having the surgery than not. I'll be healthier. But y can't my family see that? I guess I just needed to let that out. Well 9 days here we come. I have come this far nothing is going to stop me now!

Do you need a little motivation to get "Back to Basics" with your eating? Well, come Monday I'm going to practice what I preach and I'm going to kick my own butt with my food! I've been doing ok, but usually about once a month I need to eat really clean for a few days to make my stomach go back down and to flush out any extra fluids I'm holding on to. I'm going to do my Basics Bootcamp. If you'd like to join me or would just like to follow along, you're more than welcome! I'd like a little company!! But... my only request is if you say you're gonna do it... DOOO ITTTT!! I will hold you accountable for sure. If you're not sure what my Basics Bootcamp is, you can read u…

Have just begun my 2 week semi-liquid presurgery diet. I drink 1 Pure Protein shake at 7:30, then another at about 9:30. Each has 23 grams of protein. Is this too much protein to ask my one kidney to process in a short period of time? Anyone have any info on this kind of thing? Many thanks!
