Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by Pookeyism,

Five months out, and really never totally transitioned to solid foods. I think I am going to take a week or two, do a boot camp, and start making thorough notes on my day to day progression back to solids. I will not be goin gback to clears...just protien shakes and exceptionally runny mushies - with a strong emphasis on low-carb. Has anyone else done this?

  2. Woo I am very excited for my 3 week check-in appointment tomorrow. If all goes well i get to be advanced to the mushy food stage - I do have to admit i have been doing a bit of head-hunger fantisizing about solid foods the last two days, nothing too obscene, just salivating over my husbands scramble eggs or chicken strips. I am thinking maybe I will try an egg first, or 1/4 c of refried Beans, or thicker Soup - it is so funny how exciting this is after consuming only liquids for so long Things are finally starting to taste better. What did you guys have as a first mushy meal? any favorites that you would like to share?

  3. Started by Artichokes,

Have a bunch to ready to drink pure Protein shakes and am looking forward to finally getting this show on the road!

  4. Started by tetemandy36,

Hi everyone I am only 5 days post my surgery. I have been dealing with a lot of discomfort but besides that I need HELP on finding a decent tasting vitamin. My dr. Recommend bariatric fuel but it makes me gag. Please any suggestions and the best of luck to you all.

  5. Started by katysleeve8,

I am 8 days post op and doing really well with Vitamins, staying hydrated etc but I am having so much trouble getting in Protein. A) Never hungry (My fantom stomach wants a cheeseburger but really, I am not hungry) I hate all the Protein drinks I was having before surgery and the thought of a Protein shake makes me gag. C) I can eat a protein tomato Soup packet with warm Water but I can only eat a couple of spoon fulls and then I am full for hours. D) The only thing I want, like and get plenty of is orange gatorade E) I can do a couple of spoonfulls of greek yogurt but once again, full for hours afterwards I am waiting for the great day when I can go to mushy …

  6. Started by Patrick Curl,

Ok so I was skeptical that it would mix well but I took a packet of unjury protein powder unflavored, and mixed with two sugar free pudding cups I emptied them into a bowl and whisked it was probablt the first time I had protein powder that actually didn't taste like protein powder. I recommend making it kinda runny consistency, tastes delicious and less than 20 net carbs, but great for us on pre op diet not yet used to it, or trying to get by without chocolate.

  7. Started by Newfoundlove,

I have a whole case of Premier Chocolate Protein Shakes that I am trying to use. Day two I had to really choke one down, so I switched to vanilla with orange Crystal light which was tastier. But I was feeling guilty about the chocolate going to waste so thought I would add a very small amount of peanut butter to one, blended with ice in the Magic Bullet. It certainly was tasty, but took me a lot longer to drink than usual (20 minutes is my usual time). Took me over an hour to finish. About 20 minutes after I was finished, I started feeling totally crummy. Not nauseous, kind of dizzy and really gassy and bloated. I spent the next 30 minutes running to the toilet. Apparentl…

  8. Started by ahaliace,

I like to know what works for others, and what other people are doing. Well, isnt that why we are all on VST? lol. Anyway, Im curious what others daily diets are like 4 months out. Maybe you guys can give me some ideas!

  9. Started by riojen,

I'm on my pre-op restricted diet. Low sugar/carbs and high protein. the last couple of days I've had pains below my breast bone in my stomach area. Almost like contractions, but not like those of mentrual cramps a bit higher in my abdomen. Are these intense hunger pains? I thought I was over the head hunger, and I'm over weight and never really experienced hunger pains before, I don't think. Should I be worried?

  10. Started by yvesdouce,

I am wondering if anyone can enlighten me as to the digestion time of the average food after having the VSG process done. I know steak and other such foods are harder to digest and take a longer time. For example, potatoes... from eatting them and them hitting your stomach, how long until your stomach is empty again?

  11. Started by notime,

I have been sleeved for six weeks and am having trouble getting through a full day without being totally exhausted. Is this exhaustion normal or could it be my diet. My diet consists of at least 64 oz fluids, 60 grams protein, 600-700 calories. I take 2 children's vitamins daily, calcium, B12. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

  12. Started by fesenjoon,

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie who just got sleeves on May 29th. I had my ups and downs but am recovering well. I actuall flew in from Turkey in the Middle East to do the surgery in the US. Well, since all is okay so far, I'm planning to fly back home in a few days. The only issue is that it's over 10 hours in the plane. I'm finishing off my liquid diet phase and will enter my purée phase in a few days. The challenge would be what to eat when I'm on the plane. I'm thinking of packing a protein powder packages. Maybe having a small Gerber baby food jar. Don't know what TSA will let me take with me on board. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

  13. So I have never in 33 years had a problem with lactose.... Until day 4 post op and then it decided to kick me in the ass! ^_~ I had no idea how many foods lactose is in until I developed this intolerance. I have switched to lactaid milk for my shakes, purchased lactaid pills, and I avoid foods with lactose. I have found the pills help but I still feel a little sick with them. Any other advice? So..in a glass full way of thinking.... If I ever feel constipated all I have to do is drink a very small glass of milk. Things could be a lot worse but I hope this goes away sooner rather then later.

  14. Started by LDallas,

I haven't had surg yet. After the Nut seminar, she had us go on a "balanced eating plan". Part of what we are supposed to do is, no drinking w/meals and take 30 mins to eat. My question is....those that have HAD surg and now only eat tiny amounts of food...do you still take 30 mins to eat??? Thanks!!!

  15. Hello my surgery is Monday. I am going out today abs do my final shopping. My doc office to get some protein mixes from this place that is just too dang expensive. Does anyone have any good and cheap protein mix, shakes, and or drinks suggestions???? Thanks Lay-lay

  16. Okay, okay, I'm a rebel! I'm only 2 weeks out from surgery and I've been eating solids and experiencing discomfort in my chest. I try to move "things" along with sips but end up throwing up the liquid. Stubbornly, the food stays until it painfully decides to pass. Is there anyone out there that made the same mistake? Did it get better or should I always expect to have the pain?

  17. Started by mommyinneed,

I start pureed foods Tuesday and am looking for more than a few ideas other than chicken salad, tuna salad, and soups...... Anything would help. I also start back to work the same day so things I can pack would be great as well.

  18. Started by ta1020,

I read on here but I can't recall the thread. A patient went to have her surgery in Mexico and the night before surgery her doctor allowed her to have a last meal of sorts. Is this something that is normal or was this just an exception?

  19. Started by rdoactv,

Im preop but making my way to the losers bench at a steady rate. So, reading everything here gave me ideas. Im headed to the bahamas for a week and wondered what to do with some foods in fridge since they would spoil. So I broke out the food processor. Using some low sodium beef broth and a partial jar of low fat beef gravy,I pureed and finely chopped some roast beef and peppered beef, stuck it in small portion freezer bags and froze it. We'll see how it holds up and it tasted really good to my preop taste buds..so if your bored with your pureed and mushies, this may be worth a try. Im sure other flavored meats would work as well with their coincided broths/liquids. Not s…

  20. Ok dr said he used a 34 french bougie(sp) but I can eat 4 oz cottage cheese or yogurt and feel 0 restriction but I stop myself. I feel hungry often and its just not what I was expecting. Has anyone else had this happen/feeling? I'm worried I have already ruined it..

  21. I'm 1 month yesterday and I feel like I'm eating too much. Today I tried shrimp cocktail of course only ate 2 shrimps but I did drink the tomatoe juice and avacodos, I just feel that maybe it wad too soon. Have you guys tried anything like this. Then I wonder why I only lost 22 pounds in 6 weeks. No wonder I'm stuck.

  22. When I saw my surgeon for my pre-op appointment, he gave me (among other things) a prescription for Omeprazole (Prilosec). After surgery, I didn't think I was having any problems with acid reflux and I couldn't understand why he prescribed 180 capsules for me. At the rate of 2 per day, that's 90 day's supply! When I started to move into mushies, and later to soft foods, I experienced mild discomfort, the kind you get when you're testing the limits of the sleeve. I usually stopped eating before that discomfort turned to real pain. A few days ago, I started feeling like I was getting slight discomfort between meals from acid, so I began to take the Omeprazole, 1 at mor…

  23. My Doctor is not going to make me do a 2 week liquid diet. But he did say he wants me to lose 10 pounds so I want to do a 2 week diet if I can make it lol my surgery date is on June 27 but I have a pre op appointment on june 14 and on that day the 14th he has to see me 10 pounds less he said. so please tell me what can I have in those 2 weeks so I can lose 10 pounds. I cant lose weight that easily that is why Im getting the surgery. anyways thanks in advance

  24. Started by mommyinneed,

I cannot think of anything that qualified for this stage except some cream soups. I need to take advantage of this stage to test my tummy and get some nutrients.

  25. Started by alliegb3,

I was sleeved 5/21 and I find myself hungry. I am on full liquids. Do you think it's just the liquids sliding through? I can drink like 1 c of. Fluids at a time and 1/2 c of soup and I do them every 1- 11-2 hours. It just seems like a lot to me...

  27. Please help. How do I get in an adequate amount of Protein on such a restrictive amount of food. I can not even swallow a protein shot now. The last protein shot I took nauseated me. Now I'm moving to solids at 1/2 cup increments 3 x per day. Right now I try to get in 2- 1/2 portions a day. My weight loss is almost zero. At week 5 how much Water should I be drinking. Also do any of you experience fierce heartburn at this stage. I took more time off work because this I feel so uncomfortable. I know I'm not eating hardly anything so I am getting so confused why I have only lost 2lbs in two and half weeks. When on liquids post op I lost about a 1lb. The soft foods came 1/4…

  28. Started by kstalvey,

Ok so I'm doing my prep diet and yes I'm hungry but I keep on doing it right so why do I feel guilty when I eat my one meal a day? I not eating bad I'm staying in my guide lines. I'm also a but nervous becaus I had my consultion at the beginning of April and I had to go back to work after maternity leave and life has been crazy and stressful. So I stepped on the scale the morning of day 1 an I had gained nearly 10lbs ugh I guess that's why I am feeling so guilty. Any advice surgery is schedule for June 5th so a little over a week. I am just worried that I'm not doing every thing possible to loose the weight plus a little more. Am I the only one feeling this way?

  29. Started by Melissa D,

I have a pound container of Syntrax nectar. Any suggestions of the best way to eat it? I tried it in broth (pre-op) and it got kinda foamy, but it was tolerable. I tried it in some diet juice but it seemed to make the juice really sweet & I couldn't finish drinking it. Any suggestions?

  30. Started by amytug,

IM gonna die doing all liquids. That's probably an exaggeration bit I'm pretty sure I won't make it. I did the hcg diet twice and could not make it past 4-5 days both times because I felt like I was going to pass out. Can I just do like 2 weeks of super low carb even if my surgeon says liquids? Sent from my iPhone using VST

  31. im on liquids .is that the reason im so hungry every 20 minutes..its kind of annoying im constantly drinkin gatorade or water or jello

  32. Started by CRainwater,

Sorry for the mundane question but what about strawberries at 2 1/2 months post surgery? I have been concerned about the little seeds in strawberries but they look really good at the local farmers market. Are strawberries safe at this point of time? Thanks. Chris

I'm so excited because tomorrow I get to eat more varieties of food instead of just purée! Anyone have a favorite food that's soft?

  34. Started by katyb,

I'm 18 days out today, and just had my 2 week post-op appointment. They were shocked with how good my incisions look and the weight I've lost thus far. They moved me from full liquids to a mechanical soft diet, which means I got to eat some tuna salad today! I never thought I'd be so excited by tuna!

  36. Started by Candyman,

I started Dr. Pronces three day yogurt diet this morning. I have learned that plain yogurt is nasty. Does anyone have any ideas to make this stuff more palatable. I asked Trish and she said needs to be plain. no fruit.

  37. Started by Melissa D,

I am 4 days post op and I'm on Clear liquids until next week. My doctors diet says I can start Protein supplements next week. So my question is, am I supposed to be trying to get any nutrition at all from the clear liquids? I'm happy sipping Water all day, I'm not feeling hungry at all, and I'm getting my liquids in. I'm just wondering though if I'm doing what I should be doing.

  38. Just curious if anyone else is eating like this as well? I seem to still feel hunger so I start my day with a protein shake and then every few hrs I have 4 oz of plain Greek yogurt mixed with a little instant mashed potatoes . I have he yogurt / potatoes 4 times then it's one more shake. By this time it's evening and I am finishing my 60 oz of water/ Crystal Light. If I'm hungry after that I just have broth. Does this sound ok? I'm getting 70-80 grams of protein a day.

  39. Started by kysia81,

  42. Started by kstalvey,

I am on day 1 of my two week pre op diet. So far so good it takes me a while to eat my protein bar so that kinda helps with the head hunger. Protein shakes I found to be delicious. Premium protein from sams chocolate flavor. I also have the nectar sample pack so I can change it up a bit. I have gained weight since my consultation so I'm doing all that I can to get it off. Any ways here I go!!! June 5 th baby!!!! Oh also a bit nervous about the surgery. It's funny if I was going in for my ankle surgery I don't think I would be so worried, but I am about this one is it because it's an elective surgery. I just want to be here for my 2 beautiful girls.

  44. So, I am about the pickiest person in the world about what I eat and drink. I like absolutely no type of artificial sweetener which presents a huge problem in finding a Protein source for the preop and post op diets. I have tried so many already and cannot stand them. They all make me gag. Needless to say, I have been very stressed about what to do and was even trying to figure out if I could do this without having to use a protein powder/liquid. Yeah, I know, not a good thing and I knew that. However, in being totally honest, it crossed my mind to try and avoid the liquid/powder forms of protein and just start getting it in once I could do it post op with food. I…

  46. Is there any way protein can be heated or cooked?? I'm in liquid/blended soup stage. I have heated my soup and let it cool some. I then added 1 scoop unflavored protein powder. As slow as I'm eating now my soup is really cold again. Can I nuke it to make it warm again? It started out being 8 oz but after adding the protein and some chick broth I now have way more than I can eat. So I would like to put it in the fridge and finish it later but I don't want it cold! What a dilema!

  47. Hey all, I just started week 4 and I am so through with purees. If i have to eat something like that again I hope im 90 years old. With that being said I am looking for ideas of soft stuff to eat that will be easy on the sleeve. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  48. Started by cscake,

My husband is 8 months out and has lost 100 pounds. His starting weight was 267 and he now weights around 166 to 170. He is 5'6 1/2" tall. Here is my issue. He does not like any type of warm food. If I cook something he just does not care for it, with maybe the exception of chicken after it is cold, or shrimp. He has a very limited diet and craves cheddar cheese, wheat thins and sugar free popcicles and chocolate. I have had him start drinking liquid Protein again. He will eat grits or oatmeal for breatfast occasionally. I find that I have no real "taste" for food now either. It is just something to keep the grumblings of my stomach quiet. However, I do make m…
