Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Started by juls130,

Day One of an all liquid preop diet! The Popsicles have saved me! Now, I'm just keeping my eye on the prize! One day almost down, then six to go... I'm stealing encouragement from those of you already on the looser's bench and those of you already on the preop diet! Warm up a place for me!

  2. Hey everyone - I am sorry I am asking this question without doing too much searching as I am sure it is answered. But, we are about to hit the grocery store and I have some recipes I want to make from Eggface, but not sure if I can eat it yet? I am on soft food (beginning of 4th week post op) and wondering if Pepperoni (I would get turkey pepp) but chopped up like in the pizza bites, Almond flour in a lot of her recipes and Multi grain pancake mix and/or Bacon (turkey as well) is allowed? I mean, obviously I know that pancakes are soft....but I know they will be sooooooo filling, so just wanted to make sure our sleeve is ready to digest something dense at this point. …

  3. Started by ShannonK,

I was sleeved July 2nd - and I LOVE to read about what people are eating on e a regular day. I am horrible about counting calories....but my goal is 60g-70g of Protein a day! I also despise most Protein shakes, and only grab one if rushed or can't be avoided! So please share what you had today - I would love it!! Breakfast - one scrambled egg, slice of canadian bacon lunch - 3 oz crab cake (recipe has been posted in the recipe section) with tablespoon of guacamole dinner - 3 oz roasted chicken breast with Thai green sauce (blended pablano and jalapeno peppers) Lots of Water and 12 oz G2 grape gatorade! snack - one jalapeno string cheese I am loving thi…

  5. Started by sherriehoffer,

I am almost 6 week and I eat my fourth of a cup of mushies and am so full, sometimes I can even ate the whole fourth of a cup. is that how everyone else is?

  6. I had been doing so well, not even hungry. Saturday, I ate a cheeseburger. Sunday, 2 bites of a slice of pizza, today so scrambled eggs. I dont even know why. My surgery is Wednesday. Tomorrow I do all clear and will make sure I stick to it, but should I tell my surgeon about my slips? I know its more about the liver than the stomach, I just feel so guilty!

  7. I got the letter two days ago. I should be eating better, healthier, smaller portions.... no drinks with meals. no fat foods. I should have been preparing better instead of just 'in my head'. i know i have to start drinking shakes and eating better. has anyone else started late on changing habits?

  9. Started by raqzilla,

My surgery is on Tuesday and so far it hasn't been that bad. But tonight I cheated and had a slice of pizza and few chips:(. I feel like a failure, but more importantly will my surgeon be able to tell? I have waited so long for this, having been denied 3 times because of insurance politics. What should I do? Confess to the surgeon or keep quiet?

  10. Started by slimmom24angels,

Hello fellow sleevers. I start my pre op diet Monday too. I am trying to keep a positive attitude about the hunger. I have been through so much to get to this point, so I am not going to let some hunger pangs ruin this for me. I don't know about everyone else, but I prayed when I first started this journey, and asked God if it was not his will for me to have the surgery, to block it. And I meant it. I did not want to be laying on that operating table if it was not his will. But every step of this process has been smooth sailing. My surgery coordinator submitted my package to my insurance company on a Thursday, and she got an approval on the next Tuesday. And I just got my…

Ok, I am at 4 weeks almost and getting ready to start my soft foods, and will go shopping soon,I am not sure what to try , I have my list of course, but was hoping for some ideas form all of you experienced sleevers. I am a bit afraid as well so input would be great. Thanks in advance.

  12. Started by Cyntha DelTorrro,

I couldn't be happier. I realize it won't continue at this rate. The first 20 fell off in the first 10 days and since then things have slowed to a normal level. My clothes are definitely looser. One thing that makes me really happy is that my feet and ankles no longer swell up painfully each day. I have essentially doubled my shoe wardrobe and I don't have to be concerned about wearing clothes that show my ankles. Dresses and capri pants are back in style for me. My ankles are now sexy again and the rest will follow. I read postings by a lot of people who are on the fence about getting the surgery and I want to offer encouragement. I had a hard time in the hospi…

  13. Started by made2beme,

ok, I thought I had this stuff down while I was pre-op but now that I am ready to prepare for the different phases I have read so many different things. I have the instructions from my doc on how long on each phase and what they are, but confused on what foods qualify for what. While grocery shopping yesterday I got some greek yogurt and SF pudding and was so looking forward to trying it on my "Full Liquid" phase, but now I am thinking we shouldnt have this until mushies or soft foods? I know I will be able to do strained creamy Soups and Protein drinks with milk, etc. but after that I am LOST! I also know there are tons of posts on here about it, but reading more a…

  14. Started by jennrus,

Had staples out yesterday and my Dr was pleased with my progress- 13 pounds down since surgery and 27 down since starting journey. He said, "make sure you follow your diet. Do NOT try and push it. It would be easier to put a gun to your head if you want to kill yourself." So guess who isn't going to try anything before I'm supposed to? That's right, this girl.

I am really happy with my initial results. Would love to know if this is normal. The liquid diet has been really boring. Would love to hear how others have made it through the first 2 weeks having the same things over and over again.

Just had to share. On my liquid 2 week pre-op diet since Monday and am down 10 pounds!! I'm a huge guy, so it's relative, but I hope that this post encourages someone who is dreading it. FYI I fell off the wagon on yesterday and had 2 handfuls of raw cashews and 4 ounces of turkey but back on today and feel good!

I have NEVER had heartburn before my surgery and I am two weeks out. I feel like there is something "stuck" in my check when I eat. It feels warm and I am thinking it is heartburn. What can I take that will help it? And I never really had the gas problems that some people talk about but everytime I drink ANYTHING I burp and can't seem to help it! Has anyone had this problem and PLEASE tell me it goes away!!! Thanks

I I started soft foods yesterday and the only thing I've tried really so far is a 1 egg omelette and a sprinkle of ff cheese. Am I supposed to get full after a couple of bites? Because I can't eat the whole egg but about half of it, in like a 30 min setting. Kinda freaking out! Love the egg though

Ok, so im trying to get only like 20-30g of carbs for weight loss and about 70 g of Protein. But im on the post op full liquids diet. But im only on Breakfast and i have a miniscule amount of carbs left. I cant find anything to help but my protein but still keep my carbs low. Ugh. Annoyed. Anyone have any suggestions? I based by protein, fat, and protein intake based on kaisers bariatric nutrition plan.

  22. Started by nalasmom,

Anyone with me? I've been really reading up on it and it sounds really good to me. Getting Protein from food instead of shakes. I'm trying to prepare myself for it still because I'm still on liquids for one more week. If you're reading this and you're kind of not in the know about it like I was a week ago, here's a great link that i found : books on iTunes and at www.barnesandnoble.com. So if you'd like a list of resources let me know. Omg! By the ay, they have this cookbook called The Paleo Diet Cookbook: Comfort Foods... All i can say is im pretty juiced to use all these recipes.

  23. Started by ROYGBIV,

I had my surgery last summer, it's been about a year and two months since then and I've lost 85lbs and have passed my goal weight (my goal was 130, I am down to 120). However, I am finding it difficult to maintain this weight. I gain 10lbs, lose 10lbs, and my body just seems to be very sensitive overall to any excess (or lack of) calories...it is driving me nuts because I do not want to be obsessing over calories all the time. I have also noticed I am able to eat more and more as the months wear on--my doctor has warned me against eating too many bread products, Pasta, rice, soda, etc... anything that expands while being digested may cause my stomach to stretch out a…

Hey guys, I am six days post op and dying for something salty. Have been doing chicken broth and beef broth but wanted another choice. Any opinions on egg drop? My diet lists miso soup but my stomach didn't like it even after I strained it.

  26. Started by missjenny,

I'am 13 weeks post opt. And for some reason all I can eat at the most is .8 oz-1.2oz three times a day.I thought by now we should be eating more. Or am I wrong? I'am so worried I'm not getting enough protein in and the protein shakes make me gag.

I NOTICED ONE PERSON ON HERE THAT ATE SOFTS STRAIGHT FROM THE HOSPITAL. DID IT AFFECT YOUR SLEEVE OR CAUSE ISSUES IN THE FUTURE, ASSUMING YOU ARE PAST THE HEALING STAGE.

omg folks so my doctor (and it seems most all of them) says NO diet coke, no carbonation, and no caffeine.. the doc I talked to recommends at least a year without after surgery. So here I am 5 weeks before surgery trying to quit coffee and diet coke.. can I just say ARRRRRGGGGGH. LOL I think I was displaying some homicidal tendencies yesterday hahaha I felt like I had PMS times 100 hahaha I went and bought a real caffeine-filled diet coke on my lunch break at work because I was afraid to speak for fear of what horrible things I might say to people LOL so instead of cold turkey I decided to decrease by one cup of coffee/ can of diet coke each day til I'm caffeine free. …

wasn't fully sure where to post this topic. I purchased a nice Weight Watchers electronic scale, that you could even plug into the computer and track your progress, and it would tell you the BMI and such, it was retailed at $120 but I got it on ebay for like $25, new in box. Well the problem is I'll get on the scale 4 different times, and get 3 different readings. any suggestions on how to reset it? Fix it... etc?

Was going to get mad at myself for not fully embracing my 6 week lower carb diet. But then I realized I gave up coke zero and other sodas, cut coffee down to 1 to 2 a day, and cut all alcoholic drinks to 1 - 2 a week. I actually don't have an official Sept date yet, but just had EKG and sleep study.... So that should be all I had left for approval. Maybe an official surgery date will help. Now I am struggling some with fast food, ice cream and carb treats. I have resisted a lot, but have not made the best choices. I do have a close family member in the hospital, that adds stress. So I just wanted that out here for support and accountability. Thx

Hi y'all! I'm exactly 1 week post-op today and doing awesome...possibly too awesome. Absolutely no pain or nausea & I'm drinking fluids like a champ. A few mornings I've woken up and forgotten that I had major surgery last week! I'm already down 15lbs from my pro-op diet until now. If I play it "by the book" I'll move on to fuller liquids this weekend. However, I'm worried this is going too easy and I won't be successful on the long-term post op diet. For example, the other day I was giving my dog a pill w Peanut Butter and out of habit licked the rest of the peanut butter off the spoon (for the record, no the dog did not also lick the spoon!). The peanut butter …
