Post-op Diets and Questions

Post-op diet questions after weight loss surgery. Stages vary by procedure and surgeon. Recipes go in Recipe Sharing.

  1. Ok so I will be 3 weeks post op this next wednesday and I just started my mushies recently. I been having half of 1 scramble egg with a bit of fat free cheese and I made this with a bit of lactose free fat free milk. I can only eat half, I think I probably can eat the whole egg but I stopped when I feel full. I want to try to get as much as protein I can with only food so I can have at least 2 shakes of protein a day and complete the rest of my protein intake with foods. Anyone can recommend me a website or something where to calculate how much protein, calories etc you are eating. I am confused because I don't know much protein is in every food I eat. So far I tried …

  2. I am on day 5 post op and started my 10 day full liquid, low fat soup strained, sugar free pudding, broth etc... does anyone know what else i may be able to have that is okay for this time period??

  3. Started by SleeveDreamer,

I got some Unjury Chicken Broth powder yesterday at the dietician's office. It says not to use water over 130 degrees or it will affect the consistency. How do I know when the water is 130 degrees? i was going to use the hot water from my Keurig but that will definitely be too hot so how do you know?

I am what Kaiser calls a "reactivated case". I was in their bariatrics program years ago but dropped out and recently have been approved to go back. In the 4 years that I was gone, I gained 40 pounds. Kaiser wants me to lose that 40 pounds before surgery and they have given me approx. 4 months to do it... They gave me a meal plan and told me to exercise. I am going to have to BUST MY A** to lose this weight in 4 months and I need some serious suggestions...

  5. Hello everyone I am two months out and I was wondering how much other people could eat (at one sitting) at this point? I can barely eat anything! I am not complaining, but there are times where I wish I could just a tiny bit more that I could eat something other than Protein. I love veggies and would like to incorporate those in at some point. But when I do I don't get enough protein in. I have trouble with the shakes so I try to eat all of my protein. At this point I can eat about 1.5 oz of chicken, 2 of pork, 1 of tuna and about 1/4 of a sausage. This is within 30 minutes of sitting down. I know most people stop after 15-20, but I have found that that is too short…

  6. When I first stopped losing weight I was "ok" with it cuz I had been dropping wt fast. It took about a week for me to begin to get frustrated with the stall. Then I read about the 3rd wk stall and I was back feeling ok. I have graduated up to ground meats and cottage cheese so I have been getting twice the protein I was getting and about 200 more calories/day. I thought that might kick wt loss back into gear. Sadly, no. I read what others have posted about being patient and that with this kind of restriction we can't help but lose. However, my stall has been two weeks and I am really frustrated. I did have some concerns about constipation but I have found that has cleared…

I don't know why but I crave lemonade. The really intense kind. Such as the brands "simply Lemonade" and "Calypso". It could be from needing more fluids but not sure. Anyone crave it too? Or post your own odd craving.....

  9. After my pre-op diet of low carb low calorie, I lost 10 pounds (yay!)...then came th clear fluids, mostly consisting of Gatorade, and the 10 pounds just stayed there... Fast forward: I'm 7 days post-surgery, still living on basically Gatorade and broth, and still no weight loss (this is 10 days of staying at this weight). So I switched it up, no more Gatorade, did pure vegetable (no sugars) juice instead, skim milk (I'm allowed now), and the only sugar I get is in my chewable Vitamin. I'm still at this stall.... One theory my friend proposed is that the extreme low calorie, all sugar diet of Gatorade sent my metabolism into "starvation mode", and it was keeping th…

While I realize we will not be eating the same this Thanksgiving, I was wondering what the group has in mind. Good to hear from our experts to share with all of us newly sleeved what to hey do, have done or plan to do this Thanksgiving. food ideas very much appreciated. I know for me, my son loves Turkey. My husband it is ham so i am looking to cook both but much smaller quantities. We already have a plan to go for a long walk near a local waterway following lunch. In the past, we would watch movies. Not this year! Smiles.

  11. On two separate occasions, I lost over 100 lbs doing Medifast. The problem was I couldn't keep it off. And during my 9 week pre op diet, I lost 33 lbs doing Medifast. SO - fast forward to one month post sleeve - I lost 9 lbs the first week after surgery. The following 3 weeks I lost 3 more but then GAINED 2 back. I have no idea why, I'm eating approx 80 grams Protein, 5-600 calories and 20 grams of carbs. I know Medifast works, I'm so frustrated I'm thinking about doing it post sleeve. Anyone else do this?

  12. Hello friends, I am 14 days post op and extremely tired. Some people say it's just my body responding to anesthesia/surgery/etc and some blame it on not enough protein. I do have a h*ck of a time getting protein in. I spent five days preop drinking protein shakes and now 14 days postop. I have been eating other stuff too. Like soup broths, SF jello, SF freezies and cream soups. Quite frankly I am sick of protein shakes. I used to like them but now....blech...they even leave a funky taste in my mouth. I'm lucky if I can get one in during the day. Perhaps I've had some tastebud changes due to ketosis or whatever. I have lost, what I think is, significant weight. 23l…

  17. Ok today is my 3rd day of Pre op liquid diet, I am TRYING really hard to stay strong. It is hard when I have to cook breakfast for my husband ( who does not cook ) Today I made chocolate chip pancakes and I had to suffered making them and the smell and stuff lol. Have to start using protein powder a couple times a day by drinking or adding to yogurt. Does anyone have any favorites? That can be purchased at a store not on line.

  20. CANNOT WAIT until Monday when I can finally have full liquids. Salivating, fantasizing over what to have first. Ideas, anyone? I love Soup, so that's not a problem, not one little bit. ---Begin Rant--- I love my own homemade chicken broth, but I'm soooo over it now. tired of all the other sweet options on Clear Liquids, juices, jellos. but will tough it out. gave up on Protein supplements after 2 days - blech. don't think there'll be a problem starting stage 2, as i like the Premier Protein from costco. I'm 3 months out and have been eating fresh fruit since about a month out and salads since about 2 month out. They both cause great amounts of "rumblies in my tummy". Grapes actually make me burp, but everything else just seems to make the tummy very vocal. I never had this problem pre-surgery, so why is it happening now? And will it go away? Even some sliders make this happen also, like the greek yogurt. Thanks for any input y'all have.

Hello! It seems like I'm always starving and when I eat a bite of cottage cheese, it just hurts going down. Were you all still on the broth stage at this point? Thanks!

  23. Started by hibblesmom,

Hello all I am scheduled for surgery on Nov. 16, and I start my 2 week, full liquid, pre-op diet on the 2nd. Over the weekend I bought supplies (broth, SF Jello, SF popsicles, etc) and a few samples of Protein powder to try them out. I bought the Syntrax nectar chocolate Truffle and a few sample packs of Jay Robb. I've tried each now (I am trying to perfect my shake making technique BEFORE the pre-op diet) and while they go down fine, I'm noticing some...shall we say...digestive challenges. And by challenges I mean cramps in my tummy and some loose stool issues (sorry, TMI). I suspect I have some lactose intolerance, so I switched to unsweetened almond milk and sti…

  24. The list of things we can consume is a small one as it is, but I find as non-meat eater it's extremely limited. Jell-o is derived from pigs (gelatin), broth is from chicken or beef...did anyone manage to stay vegetarian on the pre-op and post-op diet, and feel ok?

  25. I am post op day 7 and according to my Dr's office have moved to soft solids. On them for the next 7 weeks. My doctor is Dr. Hoehn at KC Bariatric and they just redid all their guidelines. I was on clear liquids for 2 days, soups/puree's for 4 days and now soft foods. Scrambled eggs, turkey deli meat, tuna, cottage cheese, string cheese, soft veggies. All things I would have normally eaten at any given point in time. The protein drinks are to be consumed as needed to meet the protein requirement. I can't tell you have happy I am to need to be able to chew something since I haven't had anything in three weeks. My liver reduction diet was 3-4 protein drinks a day fo…

Day 3 of 10 and wow I develop a whopping headache tonight. I just had a Protein shake and a Greek yogurt so that is helping a bit. I am on full liquids with the focus on protein I think I am going through a carb withdrawal I didn't realize how much I have actually been eating carbs until now. Also now the anxiety and fear is setting in. I'm really afraid that come 20 years from now I'm going to look back and an regret making such a drastic change to my body because there isn't a whole lot of long term data on the sleeve yet. Yet at the same time I realize that if I don't do this now I will probably be facing a whole host of other problems so I guess doing this is probabl…

Hello all, we finally are getting food at my workplace. Instead of a single junk food vending machine, we have a company called "company kitchen" installing a small convenience store like area. The worst part..tons of junk, the best part we can request healthier foods. So what would you request that's healthy and yummy enough that others not eating well would alos enjoy? The do have salads, and cheese (with crackers) trays, sandwiches and nuts and even some beef Jerky. Any help or opinions? Gayle

Hi everyone. I just got sleeved Monday and I am discouraged. I know I am only two days out but I got on the scale to start my journal for after surgery and I gained 4.5 lbs in one day on nothing but fluids! I sure could never lose that fast! Then other problem is I feel hungry. Is that "normal" amd did anyone else have that and get down (grieve over the loss of food)? I knew this was coming. I did well ( didn't feel hunger) and lost 21 lbs before surgery, which was hard due to Mr Ghrelin hanging out in the stomach. I think now he has taken up permanent residence in the 15% that is left and he is on a rampage. At home I am now allowed protein shakes, yogurt, and …

  29. Started by Peony,

I had my surgery just two weeks ago and so far I'm very happy with the results. According to my surgeon's post-op guidelines, I was allowed to start incorporating mushy foods yesterday, but the truth is I couldn't do it! I have several concerns; 1. I don't want to regain the weight that I have lost, 2. I had so many complications with my (now removed) Lap-Band, I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my sleeve; 3. I'm worried that I don't know "how" to eat -- how to know when my body is full, how much I should be eating, etc. As I mentioned above, it's only been two weeks, so I'm sure some of these things will get better with time. I'm just wondering if anyon…

  31. I know I've read posts from people who say they no longer drink shakes in order to get all their Protein. I just don't understand what they're eating to make this happen. I can see it being possible after your several months out but ... how is it possible at the 1 -3 month period? I'm trying to get in as much as I can but I'm not geting 60g consistently. I would LOVE to see some examples ....

Today is my first day on a full liquids diet -- Creamy soups, protein shakes, yogurt... -- And I was SO excited to be able to eat some NORMAL food. This morning I mixed a fruit smoothie and found that it was waaaaaay too bitter.. Was it the Straweberries? Banana? Or is this my tastebuds "changing" as I've see so many others post on this forum? But anyway, I got a whole 16 oz smoothie down in about two hours. No prob, bob. So, now it's lunch time and I wen to Whole foods for a tase of delicious Lobster Bisque...Mmmmmm.... My mouth watered all the way back to the office. I started eating and ....UH OH! 10 teaspoons and i'm already FULL????? Are you kidding me? …

  33. Ok...I'm almost 7 months post-op and I've had a HARD time resisting carbs over the last few weeks (and my lack of weight loss reflects it!!)...SO, I'm doing the 5 day pouch test as a carb reset. I figure I'd just share here as well as on my YT channel. I looked around here for personal experience from other sleevers doing the 5 day pouch test and didn't really find anything...so here I am! I'm having a hard time remembering not to drink during meals. I don't understand why. I have always had to keep my water intake very high due to vaso-vagal symptoms (I faint if I get dehydrated) and I have such a strong need to sip water between bites of food. Is there a reason that I can't or shouldn't - why do I need to wait 30 mins after a meal to drink anything?

My surgery is on Thursday. I get the whole clear liquids while in the hospital. But I am going to be released on Saturday. How the heck can one survive for an additional 4-5 days on only clear liquids....no protein shakes or anything...no calories? How have people coped with that?

  38. Started by wannasleeve,

I was just curious. I had surgery on 09/02 and since day 1, I was able to swallow and drink just fine. I actually drank 20oz of gatorade 2 days after surgery and it didn't hurt or anything. I have been so hungry that I went on to my mushies on day 7, like the dr advised, but I can eat fish, eggs, well pretty much everything I have no pain just a fullness when I eat several bites. Any other sleevers have this experience? Laura

  43. I had my surgery four days ago. I was terribly nauseated the first day, and the second day I was just thirsty. By the third day, I was absolutely starving. I just didn't anticipate being this hungry. Is this normal???? I have been on clear liquids but got permission today to add the protein shakes back in. I'm so sick of shakes, since I had them two weeks pre-op, that I can't hardly stand to drink them. I have tried Isopure, but I really don't like that either. I am rather irritated about the post-op diet plan because quite frankly there are 50 different planS!! I can't read mine like it is the bible when I have seen soooo many different ones. Some say three meals a day and to only have protein drinks for snacks. Some say 6 small meals.. some say only three meals and NO grazing! Grazing is the devil!! lol I can't see how eating little bits throughout the day could ever be bad. Some people say to write everything down and track your calories... but I don't want to bother with that.. that is why I had the surgery so I didn't have to do that anymore. The point was to have freedom from the diet grind, not be hyper-vigilent a…

I hear alot from folks that are frustrated by the pre-op pace, but I have found that the time it has taken me to loss my pre-op wt, see PT, the nutrionist, my PCP x 6mths, the support meetings, the program NP, surgeon, and psycologist has been valuble in me being prepared mentally for this major life change. Good morning all.... Just wondering how many carbs you all eat per day. This week I've been trying to keep it to 30 or 35 carbs a day but by 2:00 my energy is GONE. Yesterday I got so low....then had a dentist appointment and could hardly walk out to my car at 5pm. I wanted something sweet so bad and I couldn't stave off the craving so I drove through McDonald's which was the closest place before my 30 minute drive home and ordered a vanilla cone....then when I got to the window they said their ice cream machine was down so offered me a frappe. Like an idiot I accepted a small mocha frappe and sucked it down. Within 5 minutes I was experiencing what I believe to be …

Here's an article I found on caffeine withdrawal. Beware the perils of caffeine withdrawal Susan Todd loves her daily coffee fix. "I can drink four or five cups, easily, comfortably," said Todd, 59, of Clinton Township, Michigan. But if she skips her regular dose of caffeine, Todd warned, watch out. "I feel lousy all over. It's not that anything hurts," she explained. "I just feel sluggish, and a cup of caffeine will cure that." Todd is among the estimated 80 to 90 percent of North American adults and children who consume caffeine products every day. Experts estimate about half that number will experience headaches and other symptoms from caffeine withd…
