Hi all I'm 3 1/2 week out from surgery and doing great no that the gout went away. I do have a question though, I am still on a liquid diet yill next week and I have been having no problems achieving 80 ounces of liquids (protein shakes, soup, water etc) a day should I be concerned by this or am I OK.

I’m almost 9 years post-op and will be 62 in March. I’d lost 119 pounds but have gained back 60. It’s been a struggle, but I’ve managed to lose 10 on my own. I'm scheduled to have gastric sleeve 8/10. I was initially gung ho, but now I'm having concerns. I've read SEVERAL instances of GS/GB patients having complications - including a significant deterioration of their dental health. Apparently, it is primarily due to a change in the level of acid the new stomach creates, a change in the pH balance in the mouth, the need to constantly and thoroughly brush your teeth after each snack/meal, problems with vitamin/nutrient absorption, etc. I spoke with a bariatric surgeon (not mine) and a top periodontist in my area. This past Friday I went to the ER with abdominal pain radiating to my back. After a CT scan it was determined that I had an internal hernia, referred to as Peterson's defect. Along with a marginal ulcer. They did surgery on the hernia and I have to take a couple of meds for the ulcer. Anyone else have surgery for an internal ulcer? How long did it take to heal? I'm home now and although they said I could go to work since I have an office job with no lifting, I'm considering staying home for a day or two. Would like to know others experiences.

I had the lapband in 2009. It slipped in 2013 and had a sleeve revison at the same time as removal. Since then, I've had raging reflux. My GI dr has tried all meds and Im taking the strongest dose of the strongest PPI out there. Shes now recommending surgery. There's the Nissen Fundoplication and revision to bypass. I had an upper gi this am and the radiologist said he wasn't sure I had enuf stomach to do fundo (they wrap ur stomach around the esophagus). I am getting closer to surgery day and part of my process has been to think of all the things I will gain as I begin to sacrifice my unhealthy relationship with food. I know the normal like clothes fitting and shopping at normal size stores etc., but I would love to hear what you guys are looking forward to. I think my most unique one is looking forward to getting out of wide shoes (I know this one might not happen I may actually just have a wide foot but it is one that I am hopeful about).

Hello Everyone! Getting an RNY has been a great journey that I would do again in a heartbeat. Success whether measured in dress sizes or comorbidities has been success all the way around (Haha! English teacher punny). Unfortunately, iron absorption is not keeping up with daily life and the Docs are concerned (BTW - this is the only concern as all of my comorbidities are out of the picture). Currently undergoing testing for poor iron absorption; it is consistently low. My concern at this point is going to a hematologist for iron therapies or blood transfusions and what the therapies will involve. Any experience with this?

I am a few months away from my surgery and have been doing a lot of research on what to expect both pre and post-op. I see that many have experienced hair loss about 3 - 4 months post-op. From what I've read, this happens to about 1/2 of bariatric patients. Have this happened to any of you? What was your experience? Did you actually have bald spots or was it hair thinning. Any information you can provide is appreciated.

Wow this site has so much information. I have a question about when you eat food..the amounts your supposed to vs not eating..how does that affect losing weight? Example...if I think I am going to lose weight by not eating as opposed to eating the required..how does it work... In my mind..if I don't eat the body goes into starvation mode making it not burn anything to keep it in reserves...is this correct? I am 4 wks post op...and happy to be here.

For me it was wanting to lose weight a little faster than the sleeve. I know I'll have to watch the excess skin and try to tone myself as I go on, but I'm ready to do this after 20 years of ups and downs. The doctor said I could go either way, but I made a good choice at the same time. Did you choose or was one recommended over the other?

I didn't know about the dreaded "3 week stall" until seeing it on various posts. It happened to me when I went on pureed diet stage (for me that was at 3 weeks). Discouraging, but "This too shall pass". Stepping up my exercise hoping that helps. Also having to take Miralax, issues with not "going" without it. So just completed my first appointment, very lacking of information. I guess I understand. So apparently the process is to see your PCM, they determine your BMI and simply send a request off to tricare for approval. They said once approved, they will assign me a surgeon to see. I am very excited to report that I have reached one of many goals, to lose 40 lbs by 2 months post op. I struggled hard with the 3rd week stall because it last 2 weeks and I've just started to work out and I feel amazing. I am so happy. From my highest weight of 270, then 255 on surgery day and down to 215 today. Today I am 198lbs down from 270, surgery was april 5th 2017! I am almost at my 4 month mark. I quit smoking cigarettes a week ago. On my initial consult with a surgeon in May, he told me to quit. I asked about the e-cigarette (vaping) and he told me it was fine, it's the cigarettes he worries about and cigarettes will show up way more nicotine on the breath test than an e-cig will. The nurse also told me they have a patient that vapes like a fiend and always has it in her mouth. The one thing I am wondering now is do any of you vape? If so, what nicotine level are you using? I'm keeping my gastric bypass on the down low with coworkers. I seem to be getting unwanted attention about how little I'm eating and not drinking alcohol. Anybody have similar issues and have tips for diffusing comments.

Hi there, I had gastric bypass surgery on September 18th and have been taking my Enoxaparin Sodium injections twice a day, once at 9am and once at 9pm. I noticed, near an injection site, that a lump has formed. It's tender if I push down on it a bit, and the swelling hasn't gone down since I noticed in yesterday. Should this be alarming? I don't see my PCP until October 5th. Thank you in advance for any comments given!

This might be a weird question but when I'm hungry I get lower left back pain. I know I need to go to dr but I keep procrastinating - just so much on the go. And I did mention it at my 2 year check up and nurses weren't concerned. But it's becoming more regular now as I'm trying to lose more weight but once I get even a little hungry I get a pain in my lower back left side. And to keep it from hurting I have to eat carbs. If I stick to low calorie foods it keeps hurting. It's like I need sugar in system to stop the pain. I was banded in 09 and want to have a revision to the sleeve but after testing I may find that I don’t qualify and have to have bypass instead. I’ll definitely do it if I find that it is my only option but the whole rerouting of the intestines thing kind of freaks me out. I have told my immediate family about my upcoming bypass surgery, but not my friends. I really don’t see my best friends that often, but that’s been my fault since they live right here. Had RNY on 09/08/2017. Prior to surgery, I was on a TWO WEEK LIQUID DIET drinking protein shakes, broths, g2 etc.... On the 26th of this month, I will be in the clear to begin pureed foods. Hello! I had by pass on the 5th, 18 days ago. I did 7 days post op of just liquids, 7 days purees and now I am on soft food. On the 4th I was 239 and after 1 week after I went down to 226. It was the 12th. Since then I didn't lose a single pound. It is a little depressing also because for me it's difficult to reach 1000 kcal a day as my surgeon told me to do.... I am pretty active and i walk every day: I don't feel like going to the gym doing cardio unless I hit those 1000 calories. Is this normal???

I would appreciate some feedback. I had a gastric sleeve three years ago and reduced my excess weight by about 50%. My weight has been stable but a little higher than I hoped for two years. However, because of the speed of the loss I now have gallstones and after a few episodes , I need to have my gallbladder removed. I just had my one year checkup after my conversion from band to Bypass. I've lost 98 pounds and have a BMI of 22. My surgeon asked me not to lose any more weight.. Words I never expected to hear from a Doctor's mouth. My story started in 2009 with a lap band. I lost about 60 pounds while throwing up almost daily. Even with repeated fills and unfills, there was no "sweet spot." I either could only have liquids, or experienced no restriction at all. After 3 years, I asked that it be emptied. I had GBS in December 2016. Starting weight was 335. I’m down 127 lbs and feeling great. No more BP meds. Not exercising like I should—scared to death of gaining muscle weight, and getting depressed looking at the number on the scale possibly go up. Has anyone had a similar situation. I have to travel a long distance from home to have the surgery. A friend will be taking me to the hospital and picking me up, will stay with them for a day or two then have a short hour long flight to my mother's. Until I am able to come home. Does that seem reasonable that I can fly short distance without too much trouble? Do I have to be able to go back and see the surgeon after surgery.
