I had RnY Surgery on Sept 6th and so far am down 42 lbs. I followed the doctors instructions to the letter for the first 2 weeks but have been deviating a little here and there. I am still eating pretty much nothing but protein. My diet consists mainly of eggs, cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt, re-fried beans, lunch meat, chicken breast meat and the occasional can of cream soup. everything I eat is the Low fat or No fat variety. Here is where I have deviated, Today I had 2 cups of coffee (I am not suppose to have caffeine until week 8), I went back to puffing on the occasional cigar about 2 weeks ago, in the last week I have started having either wine or a little wh…

I had my gastric bypass on July 17 had a complication while in the hospital so had a revision. So I am a little over 3 months post op and its been an on & off battle. I am glad & blessed to have the surgery & should of had it years ago. So I dont regret this blessing. I am struggling with gallbladder issues. My gallbladder has a mind of its own. Sometimes it is active and painful after drinking cold water sometimes its not. I still cannot eat solid protein like chicken, turkey or beef. I tried and tried and still either my stomach does not like it or my gallbladder doesnt like it. So I am back on premier protein, natural cheese and recently added lima beans, red …

I came across an interesting article this morning that discussed pain medication, specifically pain medication and relief after surgery. Many pain medicines are opioid based and there is the risk of addiction. Currently the government is clamping down on the use of these medications. This article discusses an alternative approach to pain management using a engineered chemical formulation. From my perspective it is analogous to a time release formulation. This looks like a valid approach to pain management that could very well be over the horizon in a few years. Pacira, a New Jersey-based company that specializes in putting drugs into liposomes did just that. In …

Hi all: My RNY surgery date is approaching, November 13, and I am trying to prepare myself for what I should be expecting pain-wise. I have heard a lot of conflicting information when doing my research - some people say they had very little pain, some people said the pain was terrible. I was hoping to get some feedback from the message boards from people who have gone through it. I'm sure it's different for everyone since everyone has different pain tolerances. Do you get pain medication when you go home? I wasn't sure if they give that to you since your body will digest things differently. I was also wondering what I should take to the hospital and if there is…

I found this site on a google search because I am looking for something to calm my nerves some. I'll start out by introducing myself. I am a 40 year old, disabled, morbidly obese man. I am a high functioning autistic and I have lost weight before but gained it all back and then some. I was driving a bus until I became disabled due to my weight and adult onset diabetes. I can no longer qualify for a medical card and I feel at my worst. Generally, I do not handle the extreme sensory stimulation of doctors and hospitals but I have no choice in the matter. I am on a high dose of insulin with oral medications so my PCP feels that this has become pretty urgent. Tomorrow is my …

This one is more geared towards women (unless men are privy to this topic). I had RNY on Tuesday but I noticed that my face and neck especially, get really warm but the rest of my body can feel cold. My temperature is normal but it feels like I have the chills or coming down with the flu (I’m not). Should I also mention I have PCOS...perhaps these are my hormones trying to adjust to this foreign object (pouch) in my body? Also, I do have a bit of shortness of breath so I’m walking slower. And my doctors and nurses checked my lungs, they’re fine. And yes, I’ve been using my spirometer as directed. I also presume this is again, due to a foreign object in my body? On a pos…

Hi all, I'm having issues with my band and my doctor is saying we may need to remove it. If so the option is to either simply remove or to remove and if possible switch to a bypass. I'm very nervous and am wondering if anyone would be willing to share their experience? A little background: I had my lapband in 2007 and for the first few years I did great. I lost 145 pounds. At about the 4 year mark I started having issues with heartburn and night cough (basically, I would wake up choking on fluid0 and had a series of unfills that put me at about 50% restriction. I've been there for awhile and over the last 6 years I've gained back about 100 lbs. However, after …

Hi all, my name is Kristen, and I am in dire need of a support buddy! I am 8 yrs post op GB, and am almost to the weight I was pre op!! Yes, I admit to being a bad patient, stubborn, and my worst enemy when it comes to eating. I have some legit reasons to not be as active as I should be( 3 types of arthriris and fibromyalgia) but eating the way I do is dangerous. I need a buddy, someone who has struggled, maybe was a bad patient but then dug out from this hole and took control of their health. Can anyone help me? I would be very greatful!!

I was wondering if anyone had this issue after RNY? I had RNY 5/9/17. On 3 separate occasions my bowels cramp so bad it wakes my up from my sleep. When this happens I have a bowel movement but while that is happening I wretch like I have to vomit. Just concerned. Thanks Lisa

I'm a freak of nature--I know. But I actually like the thickness and appetite suppression/fullness that I get from adding 1 tbsp of whole psyllium husks to a drink like: iced protein coffee, apple pie spice iced tea, protein smoothies of all flavors. It really gives body and stays with me. Will psyllium be off limits to me post surgery? Do you use it and if so, how does it affect you. How did you work into using it once you had surgery? TIA!

I am 6 days post op . I feel like the area around my incisions are huge. It’s like I have 2 guys and upper gut which is like firm and bloated, and a lower gut that’s just chub from before. It’s unflattering and discouraging. in general I just feel bloated. I think I may be constipated as I hear that is common. But I’m not really sure because 1. I’ve never been constipated before and 2. I haven’t eaten anything solid so I don’t know what I would be moving out. I drank some stool softener in attempts to rid this feeling. Any other tips? And when should I be able to see this bloat go down. Am I expecting too much too soon? I go back to work Monday and I’d like to be past thi…

Does anyone else take or plan on taking progress pictures? My surgery is 2 1/2 weeks away so I took my before pictures this morning. I took front, back and both sides (with nothing on but a pair of boxers) and I put the date and my weight at the bottom of the pictures. I plan on taking pictures every week to show my progress. I enjoy putting up websites so I will probably create a progress website once I have my surgery. I thought about posting one of my before pictures on here but didn't want to offend anyone, it is hard for me to see myself this way which should really help stay the course once I get started. While typing this post I thought about it and f…

Hi I’m wondering if any else has experienced this or has ideas: I had gastric bypass 12 days ago, and have had terrible back pain since the first moment in recovery that I remember. The pain is directly on my spine, middle of my back. I’ve never had back pain before. Hospital staff said it was from laying in the hospital bed and that it’d be better once I could sleep in my own bed. Once I got home, my surgeon suspected it was gas. 6 days out I went to the er for it - an xray showed nothing and they had no suggestions. I’m not constipated, eating is better than expected, no other issues... except I can’t sit, stand or walk for more than a few minutes at a time. …

I’m about 3 weeks post op. Every time I eat I puking it up with 5-10 mins. No matter what it is, how slow I eat, or how little bites I take I always throw it up! Seen my doc a couple times, got sent to hospital for fluids. Other then that they want to wait and see what happens. I’m suppose to be on soft foods but can’t even keep down the puréed. I’ve tried but it’s the same result. Doc mentioned a few things they might to but again they want to wait and see if it’s just swollen in there or is something is closing or whatever. I’ve tried everything they have suggested but no luck. Please someone tell me this isn’t my new normal! Spending more time in the bathroom then wit…

It is interesting what is being proposed in the United Kingdom. The NHS will ban patients from surgery indefinitely unless they lose weight or quit smoking, under controversial plans drawn up in Hertfordshire. The restrictions mean those with a Body Mass Index of 30 or more will be set targets to reduce their weight by 10 per cent over nine months, with those with a BMI over 40 will be told to cut their weight by 15 per cent. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/10/17/nhs-provokes-fury-indefinite-surgery-ban-smokers-obese/ The National Health Service (NHS) is the public health services of England, Scotland and Wales, and is commonly used to refer to those …

So I have been interviewing with a company and if all goes well next Friday, the company will invite me onsite for an interview. I'm 11 days out from surgery. At this point, I don't think I'll interview onsite prior to surgery. My question is how soon after surgery do you think I'll be 'good enough' meaning have energy and not look like someone beat me up, to sit through a 3 hour interview? 2 weeks? 3 weeks? I can't push it out too long. Help!!!!

I am eight weeks post op from my gastric bypass surgery. When I first went on solids I was tolerating them well and only had pain when I ate certain foods. Now, I have pain every time I eat anything and it is excruciating. It feels like my pouch is too stretched out and is going to pop. Food goes back up my throat and I belch constantly. I am only eating 1/2 cup per meal and not drinking fluids during meals or 30 minutes before or after meals. I'm avoiding foods I was told could cause trouble and the foods that are bothering me now I was tolerating fine post operatively to start. I've put myself back on just protein shakes and water this past week and am tolerating those …

Just curious as to how many others have kept some sort of private journal (hand written or typed/online) that they use to document the progress of their journey. I know a lot of people blog and have YouTube channels (feel free to share both!) that are viewable by the public, but my journaling is done on a site called Penzu, which is a private online journaling platform. I used it when I went through my divorce from my first husband, and it was actually very helpful to get all my thoughts typed out without worrying about others reading them. I could just lay it all out as bluntly as I wanted. I may eventually share some of my journal entries with friends and family, b…

I had gastric bypass 12 years ago. I lost 175 pounds. In the past 4 months I have lost 52 pounds. I just can't hold any food. I have no energy at all. I can't even work. I've had terrible stomache pains and have to wear warm ups since they are loose. I look anorexic. I am really scared. I have been to my gastroenterologist and he has run all kinds of tests (endoscope, colonoscopy, ct scans, etc). He did have to stretch my esophagus because I had a hard time eating meat and that helped that but I still can't eat. Something had to have to the pouch. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I NEED HELP BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! Thanks.

For those that have had gastric bypass, what did your weight loss look like? Did you lose steady and gradually? Did you lose a lot then plateau? I was 222 the day before I began my liquid diet. I was 217 the morning of my surgery. It has been about one month. I’m currently at 196. I wanted to know if this is normal or truly what others experiences were/are like. And forgive my signature. I can’t figure out how to get back to it to update it! HW 228 CW 217 GW 125

I had my lap-band removed after 10 years due to a malfunction and quickly gained back a good portion of the weight I'd kept off despite my best efforts. So I had MGB surgery 3 weeks ago and am now starting to eat mostly normal foods (soft foods). What is really surprising to me is the difference in the level of restriction. With the band I could only tolerate 1/2 or so cup of solid food at a meal. With my MGB, they say you should eat about 1 cup of food at each meal. However, while I do stop myself at a cup, I feel like I could eat more and find this a little unnerving. My body got pretty used to only eating very little food at meals and it makes me wonder how I wil…

This is my first time posting, so I am hoping that I can get some real life responses and stories. I had lap band done in 2008 and in 2014 had it converted to the sleeve because it had slipped. I LOVED my band!! I was down to my goal weight, felt pretty great until it slipped. I had the sleeve and have done nothing but GAINED since then, no matter what I do. About 6 months ago, I started having severe heartburn and GERD, my surgeon has tried everything...I have had every test as well. We even tried taking my gall bladder out a month ago, because I had "similar feelings" to my symptoms when I did the nuclear medicine test and had to drink Ensure. I am still havi…

I don’t want to be a Debbie downer, so I am starting a new topic, I don’t want all the newbies to read this a freak out thinking this is typical. I am 5 weeks out of bypass surgery and am having major complications. I was told I have a stretchier and ulcer. I am at home with a PICC line, doing two bags of IV fluids a day. After my sleeve surgery (12/12/16) the bariatric nurse told me that I would not feel hunger for about a year. Was anyone else told that? So the last couple of weeks, I am HUNGRY all the time! Still eating the same, about 100g protein daily, low carbs, working out and drinking tons of water. I've lost right at 80 since surgery. Anyone else have this issue? I am scared.... it is truly a struggle, again.

I am 6 years post-op and it seems I have an unusual "side effect" and can't find a fix. Like most of us I had dumping syndrome right away. I also kept it longer than those in the support group....approx 2.5 years. I went immediately from dumping to constipation (I take Miralax everyday as prescribed). A few days ago for no apparent reason, I dumped. It was such a relief, even with the minor cramping. Now, I am again constipated. There is nothing in my diet that has changed. Nothing different at all. My constipation is debilitating, cramping so bad I'm crying and curled up in a ball. I have tried everything, medical to natural, and have found no relief from …

WOW! It is hard to believe that I am less than a month away from being a year post op. I had a lap band placed in 2015. I was strict - no caffeine, no soda, no alcohol. I attempted to eat vegetables and protein in the form of meat...only to regurge them back up every time. My surgeon was supposed to be "one of the best" around in the Valley of the Sun. The support groups consisted of skinny people with success stories and no understanding for what I was going through. The nutritionist eventually "fired" me because I was allergic to some fruits and vegetables and couldn't get others down. He stated that I needed to change my attitude and stop pretending that I was allergic to some fruits and vegetables. I was irritated to say the least. After filling…

Hi everyone! I'm scheduled for RNY October 30th and I have 2 weeks booked off work. I know there are many threads discussing recovery time from the physical aspect. My question is how long does it take to be fully mentally alert as far as recovery is concerned? Did you guys find yourself mentally exhausted after the surgery? How long was recovery from that aspect?
