Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone knows whether it is safe to play a contact sport being banded? Now that I've lost weight and can exercise without the risk of keeling over, I joined my college rugby team and have been practicing for a semester. If you don't know anything about rugby it involves hard-core tackling without any padding. You would think I would have thought of the concerns before playing. It actually just occurred to me when I realized how easily I could feel my port. Now that I have games coming up I've begun to question whether or not it's safe to play a contact sport. Let me know if anyone has heard from doctors or anyone about this is…

I have been doing heavier work outs lately and my trainer told me to get rid of the Nike Shox and find something with a more even base instead of tilting me forward on my toes. He said this while we were doing squats but I just dont know what to get. Anyone have any ideas?

I walk on my breaks and over my lunch hour at work. It's all I can really DO at work. I didn't feel like I was getting that much out of my 15 minute mini-walks, so I went to Kmart and bought weights to wear on my wrists and ankles. 8 lbs total.... And HOLY COW! What a difference!!! I totally broke a sweat, and feel like I got a great little mini-workout! Now, if my bodybugg would just get here, I'd know how many calories I burned.... :whoo:

I had got out of my exercise regimen, a while back, but in the last 4 weeks had got back into walking and last 2 weeks incorporated a little running. (kind of the couch to 5K approach but less running time 10 - 15 seconds every minute for 20-25 minutes) Have even cut back on my eating. Got on the scales this morning and up like 3 pounds??????? No heavy salt intake yesterday. This scale thing has got me just a lil down, was expecting a little loss, for sure not a gain??? Anyone have any thoughts on this?????????????:help:

Hi, I tried this program in the past (pre-band) and really liked it but was uncomfortable due to my size. Now that the weight is starting to come off, I would like to try this program again. My question: When I am released for strenuous exercise (I think it is 4 weeks after surgery - so two weeks from now) do you think it is OK to begin week one of the couch to 5K or should I wait more? I am already walking 30 minutes a day at 3.5 MPH and doing some pretty strenouous hills - and actually enjoying it! I have the nike+ program and an ipod nano, so I am set to go. Tina

My surgeon has me on a low-carb diet. It has worked well for me over the last year, but I recently joined a gym and I'm now working out an hour a day...sometimes more. But after reading an article on SparkPeople about glycogen replenishment, I'm starting to question if I might hindering my progress by not eating enough good carbs. Any thoughts?

That's what I call the fat in my lower abdomen. I know I probably can't get rid of the entire thing, but will exercise improve it? What about these flabby looking thighs and knees? Has anyone had experience with this? With regular exercise, has it really improved? Thanks :faint:

I have been banded 2 weeks today. Am I being impatient because I haven't lost any weight in the last week even though I'm sticking to plan, still feeling some restriction, and walking every night? I suppose the week prior to surgery and the week after spoiled me considering that I lost 15lbs during this time. Now, nothing.. i may have even put back on a pound or two. I'm sad..:cry My first fill isn't until the day before Thanksgiving.. 11/21.

OK so I just received my elliptical machine yesterday ... the hubby put it together for me last night and all I can say is .... man, that thing kicks my @$$! I can't last more than 2 minutes on it without my legs giving out on me, and gasping for breath Has anyone else had this problem? ... Does it get easier? I'd hate to have wasted $700 on a machine I can't use :faint:

I am considering having lapband surgery.I have seen a surgeon & he said I would have to do 1hr of hot sweatty exercise everyday. That seems a little excessive to me. Why not just exercise & watch what you eat & loose that way? I have about 120lbs to loose & have yo-yo dieted for 10years w/no luck. I loose & then regain. Anyone from the Akron, OH area, if so, who was your surgeon?:help: by the way, what is Pbing?

Hi everyone, OK, this is our first week in the Couch to 5K program. This is designed to be a 9 week program, but you can repeat weeks (as I will be doing) until you are comfortable moving on. However, you are not supposed to skip weeks. More information can be found here: Cool Running :: The Couch-to-5K Running Plan Attached is the first week in detail Anyone is free to join, no matter where we are!! This is the place to check in and support with each other and see how it is going. What week are you doing? How is it going for you? Is it too difficult / too easy? Any comments?? Good luck everyone! :whoo:

This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine. Dear Diary: For my birthday this year, my daughter (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary…

I'm 7 weeks post op, 2 day post 1st fill. I am brisk walking 5 x's a week 3 x s daily but my doctor told me to start doing weight resistance training. So after deciding joining a gym was just too costly right now, I read an article in Prevention magazine about working with bands. They did a study of which form of exercise provided quickest results between yoga, pilates , working with dumbbells or using band. The bands won. So my 22 year old daughter (who's lost 22 lbs with 10 to go) decided to be my trainer. She was a All State Athlete in High school traveling on top notch fast pitch softball teams and playing basketball. It felt great working my upper body and was fairl…

Hey, I have a great Idea for a creative exercise. It is called Geocaching. Geo as in Earth. Caching (cash) as in a pile or store of something. You can find the website at Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site This is a high-tech treasure hunt. There are caches all over the world and I bet there are TONS of them near you. You don't have to go out and spend tons of $$$ on a fancy GPS. Mine cost about $70 and does just as good. Now get a GPS and get out there and find some caches!

For those of you who run, how much did you have to lose before you began running? I started at 272 and there is no way I could have run at that weight. I am now down to 220 and I am considering running. I am, however, concerned about my knees. Will the excess weight cause me joint problems if I began running when I am still about 60 pounds from goal?

I have been working out 4-6 days a week since May. I do atleast 45 minutes of intense cardio plus 20-30 minutes of weights. My weight loss has recently stalled out. I have been at the same weight for 2 weeks. My calorie intake is still 800-1000 calories per day but the weight loss has stopped. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to start dropping pounds again? I'm starting to get frustrated.:heh:

I've recently started swimming for exercise, and have to say I am really loving it. Though always a Water baby, the very idea of swimming back and forth and back and forth never appealed to me AT.ALL. Booooorrrrring, I thought. No music! Until this last couple of weeks. For some reason, upon catching a whiff of the pool-chlorinated air last time I was in the Y locker room, I got the urge to swim a little. The thought didn't leave me, and in the last two weeks--during a time of incredible professional stress--I thought I'd give it a whirl. It's remarkable! Using all my muscles, non-impact, no sweating (!), really stretching as well as contracting and getting decent car…

I had TWO great exercise NSV's this morning. I have been walking & running (couch potato to 5k program) for nearly a month now, using the bike bath near my house. NSV #1: I ran (ha! that is an overstatement of my very slow jog) 22 out of 40 minutes I was working out. All the way from my starting point to the bottom of the big hill (15 minutes) then turned around and walked back up the hill and ran (7 minutes) back to my start. Woo! NSV #2: just as I was ending my run, I was very tired and wanted to try to keep running back to the start but wasn't sure I could. I see the same people on the path every day, including one lady with her huge black poodle. This mornin…

Pre-baby, I was at the gym all the time. And I could afford it! Now, no way. Can't afford it and I'm stuck! I am almost 4 weeks post op and I haven't started execising. I am stuck at 22 #s, so I know I need to get my butt movin'! I have a jogging stroller and live in the foothills, so it's great exercise, but I get tired so fast because of all the hills. It's no fun! Any suggestions? My son loves the stroller, so I have to take him no matter what... AND, any tips on self-motivation?

Hello all~ Since Sept 5 I have lost a total of 28 lbs....10 of those were postop. I was banded on 9/20. However, now I'm started to realize that I'm getting flabby loose skin.:help: I was told that I should not go to the gym until after my doctor has seen me for the first time since surgery. My appt. is Oct.9...scared I'm really going to be just skin walking around by then! Even though I was overweight, my skin appeared to be tight opposed to now. I'm just totally confused...happy about the weightloss but sad about the loose skin. Is it that I'm not getting enough Protein? I know during my liquid stage I felt like I could hardly get anything down...so I didn't drink a…

I really didn't initially start exercising till about 3 months ago or so and I started with the attitude of - I HATE WORKING OUT - then i realized if weight loss and better health is what I really want THEN I gotta do what I gotta do and it all began with - SHOWING UP DAILY at the GYM - NOW, I just and still walk for 45 minutes, swim for 10 and sauna and hot tub for the remainder of my time there daily. My mind fought me ALOT for a long time but this month I commited to myself to make the entire month daily. I had started out once a week, then twice a wekk then every other day and NOW EVERY DAY and I am thinking that I will continue doing it like this UNTIL I get EXACTLY…

DH and I finally found one a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it!! the one we bought comes with the Sport Pack and has Tennis and Boxing (bowling, golf, etc too.) according to my body bugg, i burn anywhere from 9 - 15 cals a minute while doing the boxing. (to compare - i do about 7-9 cals / minute on the elliptical / bike) it is an amazing workout and i recommend it highly.

:help: I need an attitude adjustment. I just can't seem to bring myself the excercise. I am more active...but not exactly excercising. Can't afford a gym or the Y right now. I do have a treadmill at home...but I absolutely HATE it! Someone tell me why I need to excercise right now anyway. I'm only 5 weeks post op and have only lost 20 #. Surely it would be ok to wait awhile longer...right???

I have been banded 4 months and recently started working out with a personal trainer. Once a week we do abs for almost an entire work out. I dont have any pain while I am doing the actual excercises but the next day the pain around my port is especially irritating. Am I doing too much? Will this harm my port? Does this go away? I dont want to stop doing the excercises for my abs because I really am noticing a difference but at the same time I dont want to set myself up for a flipped port or something goofy.

I know that I saw someone mention them on this forum before, but I couldn't find it. It's something with a b or bbb, something like that. I would appreciate if someone could tell me what those things are that most of the bigget losers wear on their arms. I know that they monitor their activity with them.
