Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

I am preband...I am seeing a nutritionist...and am changing my eating habits. I am NOT changing my physical habits. I know that I need to...I'm just unmotivated. I have lost 11 pounds since my first consultation...and I know that I would lose so much more if I added the physical part in. I make excuses...you know...the no time excuse. Help me....what can I do...at home...that will get me moving???

Can someone recommend home exercise for the fat around your bra line? It's really driving me nuts!! I'm dropping weight in most places, but this is the one where I feel the most jiggly! Well, my biceps need it too.

  3. Does anyone on here pre or post use kettlebells to exercise with? I am pre-procedure and enjoy doing them and can't wait to take weight off so my back isn't so strained. How long are you supposed to wait until you can exercise with weights again?

  4. This is what I call weight loss myth #1. If you workout enough you can lose weight. Exercise is NOT about losing weight. Exercise is about improving your health. You say. “What the heck is he talking about? Everybody tells me to exercise to lose weight.” Let me explain. Let’s say you and I decide to have lunch together. We overeat by say 500 calories. Now if we both decide to “work it off” with exercise, how long do you think we need to go? Generally speaking, 2 hours of exercise would take care of those 500 calories. But what about the next 500 calories at dinner? Hopefully you can see my point. Controlling excess weight is about learning to eat healthier portions.…

:help: I had my surgery about 2 months ago and just recently started an ab workout. My Doc said this was ok, but I have noticed I am having pain near my incision at the port site. I recovered rather quickly and didn't have much pain at all during the whole recovery process. It's not sore like "feel the burn" it's particularly sore right where I feel my port is. It's usually sore for a day or two, and then it's ok again. Am I doing something wrong? I can't just not do an ab workout, so is anyone else experiencing this? Please share your experience....

Hi! I started exercising :clap2: and i noticed that while i was exercising when i breathed in deeply, my left upper shoulder would start hurting pretty bad. It proceeded to continue till i was finally done with the workout, but when i increased intensity then the pain was sharper. Today, all is good again. I was wondering if anyone else had felt something like this. I tried doing a search within the posts, but was not able to find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I went to the grocery store and made it almost to the end of my list before having to check out.:crutch: I have been going to Curves 3x a week up until surgery...I'm thinking I can start back in a couple of days. I am curious as to when some of you went back to your routine?:bandit

I'm looking at buying a moderately priced ($200-300) used treadmill. I've been checking ebay and craigslist but it occured to me that I really don't know what I'm looking at. Any brands and/or features to look for or avoid? Thanks

I started jogging last week on the treadmill, about 4.2-4.4 mph. Well now my belly flop is starting to hurt from being jostled around while jogging. My boobs are having the same problem inspite of being in a sports bra. Do I need a smaller size of sports bra? And what can I do about the belly flop? Thanks!

  10. Can you be successful losing weight with the lapband if you have difficulty moving? I have fairly significant arthritis in my knees and find walking somewhat difficult. Obviously, losing weight may relieve some of the pain, but since I've had knee problems since I was a slender teen, I'm not expecting it to resolve completely. Since I've been sedentary for so long, my plan is to start doing physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around my knees, and simultaneously begin a more general weight lifting program to increase my general strength. I'm hoping after a few weeks of this I'll be strong enough to start walking short distances. What I have to avoid is injury …

I was kinda suprised yesterday when my doctor told me that my walking 30 minuets or so a day was not enough. They told me they want me walking everyday for 60 minuets at least. I really do not like to exercize so its not suprise that I am not excited about kicking it up an extra 30 minuets. But I will do what I have to do. I just didnt realize the exercise recommendations were so much. It used to be that when I was walking only a few days a week they were happy with me, maybe that was because I was just getting started.

I have Lupus and sometimes when it acts up I have arthitis in parts of my body or sometimes my entire body. Today its in my knees and I dont feel like I can walk hardly at all. Plus I have been sleeping almost all day long this last week because I get really tierd. So I havent been getting much exercize at all. I wonder if I should try to suck it up and gimp my way through my walks or if that it anti-productive really. I am sure alot of people have arthitis and try to exercize anyway. Am I being a wimp? lol

I've been noticing that it's the little improvements that make a huge difference in how I feel about this whole journey; particularly in regard to exercise. For example today I was on the tread mill for a total of 30 minutes. I walked three, ran 7 and I did that three times. Well, it started with me running for 30 seconds every minute and a half. But slowly I added more running. For weeks I stayed at walk 2 minutes and run for 1. The goal is to run a 5K by February, then more later. I'd like to be able to run a solid hour which is hard to imagine! Mind you a year ago I'd not have run out of the way of car careening toward me. I would have resigned myself to c…

Wanna chop my legs off sore. Shoot me now sore. Where are all the know it alls when I need them?

  23. I have been working out now 5 days a week for 3 weeks. My workout does include weight training. I have not lost a pound in 7 days and I have been watching my diet. In fact my weight may have even gone up a little. I am really depressed about this and am wondering if my weight training could be stalling my weight loss. I thought weight training may slow my weight loss but not reverse it. Does anyone know exactly how the weight training effects weightloss?

For those who watch The Biggest Loser, do you think it is a helpful television program or sets people up with unreal expectations for weight loss and exercise goals? Even though I know that losing 8+ pounds a week isn't going to happen for people who can't devote every minute to exercise, I still think it is a motivating program. And, for some reason, I really like Jillian Michaels. It doesn't feel exploitive like Fat March or other reality shows. What do you guys think?

She was banded October 19th and is doing pretty well and has lost around 15-20lbs, but she is constantly battling pain and swelling of her knee. She wants to exercise and speed up the weightloss, but doctor says she can't walk. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of exercise she can do and not be hard on her knee. I used to love to jump rope! In elementary school I was the "Jump Rope for Heart" champion 5 years in a row. Once I started gaining weight, I stopped doing any exercise. The other day I was thinking about how much I used to love jumping rope, so I went out and bought a jump rope and started. Well, it's a lot harder than it used to be. The first time I did it, I was only able to do 10 jumps. I know, thats sooo sad. But I continued doing a little every day this week and today I was able to do 100 in a row, although I thought I was going to hyperventilate afterwards. I was doing some research on calories burned per hour and based on my weight, jump roping burns more than jog…

Ok this is going to sound really strange. But I've been working on running lately, doing the couch to 5k. Anyway today I ran at 4.2 mph on the treadmill for 5 minutes, then it all started. I started drooling/sliming and then the puking started. Considering it was first thing in the morning the only thing I had in me was Water. I felt like my band was really really tight. So I stopped to puke and then just layed in bed for an hour and sipped a hot cup of tea. I felt fine afterwards and my band seemed to lossen up. Has this happened to anyone? I've been working out for the past 6 weeks with no problems until now. Cardio is either biking or the treadmill. …

Has eating real food also been any problem after a couple weeks after surgery? Thanks

A couple of weeks ago, my sister who lives up the street from me (well about 2kms up a BIG hill) called and asked if she could drop by and borrow some of my shoes to wear to a wedding. I told her I was going out for a run in the next 5 minutes and would be gone for close to an hour. Oh, well you can put them in a back pack and run to my place and leave them for me, cos I'm not home and was going to come pick them up in about half an hour, she said. Geez I said to her jokingly, I'm not a pack horse, I'm an athlete (this part was said with sar…

I am just over 2 months post op and have started to add more muscle excercises to my work out. I was doing some sit ups the other day andwhenI was done my port hurt. If anyone goes there or has in the past, please let me know what you thought about it. Is it worth the money? Seems like the 1/2 hour per day workout is too good to be true. Thanks!!

I have owned and ridden horses all my life and I'm concerned about my ability to mount & dismount (I hop down from the saddle - short legs). I'm concerned about the jarring effective on the band and the stretching effect on the port. I haven't found a thread on this, so thought I'd ask. I don't want to sell my horse - its my favorite (and almost only) form of exercise. I mount with a mounting blocking - will have some, but minimal pull. The horse is smooth gaited. I'm most concerned about getting off. My port in not on the side, but nearer to the front. Anyone dealing with this......pls?:help:

How can I make it stop? A: Are your shoelaces too tight? That's the first thing to check. Restrictive shoes could pinch a nerve, says Matt Werd, a podiatrist in Lakeland, Fla., and president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. If that's not the culprit, another possible explanation is something called "exercise-induced compartment syndrome," he says. During exercise, muscles may increase in volume and exert pressure on blood vessels and n…

I asked him about all sorts of exercises and basically he told me to listen to my body and build it up.
