Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Anyalee,

Does starting to exercise make the port pain go away quicker? This is excruciating for me- I can't sit up in bed or lay on my side.....I just had surgery Thursday- but want to be moving around. (without hurting so much)

  2. I could really use the support, encouragement, companionship & motivation of a workout friend. In turn, I will be the same supportive friend to you!:tt1: Haven't joined a gym yet, but will probably join the YMCA before the month is up - Pay the Day is going on. But I know how I am...I am bad about going to exercise and classes, when I don't know anyone. Anyone interested in having a buddy in Arlington? :frown:

How does everyone exercise? Does anyone do work out dvd in their home. Is that good. or going to the gym better?

  4. Started by mamato3,

OK... so I am totally feeling ignorant even posting this. I am only a little over 2 weeks post op. I joined the YMCA as it is the closest thing to home for me. I have gone 2 times and it is SOOOOO overwhelming to me! I dont know where to start. I guess I am guitly of never really exercising before. Anyways, I got on the treadmill for 20 minutes and walked a little over a mile. When I got done with that, I looked around and didn't know what to do next, so I left! I felt too stupid to even ask anyone for suggestions. What is a good begginer exercise routine? Maybe I just have to suck it up and ask someone there for a little help, huh?

  5. THE BODYBUGG IS NOW SOLD - THANKS I have a body bugg which I purchased on Dec 1, 2007. I just do not use it although it is a great little gadget. I have one month or so left on the subscription which I would give who ever wants it the pw and user name...then you would just have to purchase the plan (everyone does) either monthly ~$9 or a whole year for $100...it is that simple. There would be no activation fees. I still have the box and everything - it is definately barely used - about 10 days of use or less, I would guess. Please PM me if you are interested. I will try to sell on ebay (where they are running about $200 for used ones) by the end of the week. I was h…

Hey guys, I had the band a week ago and for the first 3 days I was really careful and would sip slowly and not take in too much. However, after that I started drinking and sometimes gulping down liquids and realized that it had no effect. Then I noticed that I could down a whole tin of V8 with ease. Is this normal? Am I stretching my pouch?

I'll admit it. I haven't excercised in months. Since the weather got cold, I am afraid of taking the baby out in the jogging stroller. Being a single mom, I just can't afford my gym membership anymore. I cancelled it months ago. I found some weights at a garage sale, I used them for a few weeks, then I put them in the closet and forgot they were there. My weight loss is going just fine, but I need to excercise. How do I get motivated? No matter what diet I'm on, I have a hard time working out... unless I'm going to the gym. Then its easy. I may just have to find a way to get another gym membership and tough it out... they have daycare there too. That is a…

I am pre-op, still in the evaluation stage and have been thinking alot about re-joining a gym. I have a BMI of 40 (so I JUST make it for the requirements). I'm afraid that if I join a gym and loose weight that (if approved) insurance will not help me w/ my procedure. Should I weight till after surgery or should I join now and get back into the swing of things before surgery? Thanks for your opinion/insight! Nikki

  15. I'm not going to lie, I hate to sweat. I'm so large that moving for a long period of time tends to wear me out BUT TODAY I begin exercising. I'm starting small, 10 minutes my first day, and working my way up to one hour or more of healthy movement. So how do you move? Today I took my 85 pound pitbull for a walk. What did you do? Anyone else need to break the I-hate-to-exercise habit? What are you doing to change? Share your thoughts here. I am driven by the fact that exercise is essential to weightloss. Patty

I am one (of the many, I'm sure) who loathes exercise, but one thing I've usually been comfortable doing is swimming. I work on a mine site in the far north of Western Australia) and it is just too damned hot (even at 4:30am!) to go outside walking, so I've been swimming in the camp pool after work at night. It took me a week but I have gotten up to doing 1km of laps each night, using a mix of breaststroke, backstroke and overarm/crawl. It usually takes me about 40 minutes to do this and I was planning on stepping up the pace and taking fewer breaks until I could do it all at a brisk pace non-stop, before stepping up the distance. I didn't want to hijack the other thread, but I have a question. I know the bugg tracks your "activity level" - and that you have to imput your calories consumed into the computer (much like I currently do with calorie king). Does the bugg software allow you to add your own "custom" foods ? Also, does it have listings for all restaurants and supermarket brands, like calorie king does ? *also* Is it really just a "glorified" pedometer (only tracking steps) or does it really track how much you're exerting/burning ?

Either way post your biggest numbers here and lets encourage each other to use this bugg as intended. So please post your biggest records like most steps in a day or most calories burned. I would be interested in hearing what exercises caused the "spikes" on your chart. Maybe you are doing some awesome daily routine that I could add to my day. I have been walking on a treadmill everyday for about 3 months now, 1 mile a day at least. I just discovered that your workout is diminished if you are holding on. The treadmill makers probably won't tell you this for safety reasons but any able bodied person using a treadmill should not be holding on to the hand rails. Walking while holding on will not give you as good a workout and you will not burn as many calories. It is bad for your posture too. I had my suspisions but when I noticed that the trainers on "The Biggest Loser" won't let the contestants hold on I did my own research online. Anyway, today I walked my mile without holding on and it nearly kicked my b…

So I have to ask ... after getting banded and losing a bit of weight is it easier? Currently I hate excercise, it is the bain of my existence and I know excercise is a key part of the banding process. Right now becoming someone thats an "excercise junkie" seems like a hard concept to wrap my brain around.

I do cardio 6-7 times a week and lift weights 3 times a week. I have hit a plateau in my weight loss. I went for a third fill and I can eat more now than before and I am even more hungry. So I am trying to examine my workouts and see where I need to make a change to jump start the weight loss. I don't think I need to do more. I am already working out 2-3 hours a day 6-7 days a week. I do 1-1.5 hours on the arctrainer at 80-100 resistance (max 100). Is this doing more resistance training and possibly building muscle rather than burning fat. Should I knock the resistance back in order to jump start the weight loss again. My legs are really starting to get muscular no…

  30. Has anyone out there had any trainers or perhaps dietitians that have taught them ways to firm your skins elasticity up before going into surgery? My thought is, after such dramatic weight loss...there will be some loose skin issues for some of us. I have a fear, I'll be one of those. So, what my thinking process is...is there a way to at least alleviate some of this if not all? Maybe you have some tips to share, or some reality to shed on us. I'm sure that this is a question on a few of our minds that are pre-surgery patients! Dev

Since I have been running and spinning my resting heart rate has dropped to 50-52 which seems really low but my research says that for a "highly trained athlete" it is normal. Now although I have been working out a lot for the past 4 months I do not consider myself a highly trained athlete - has anyone else had that happen to them. I am concerned that it is an indicator of something else.

Hi everyone. I'm on schedule to be banded sometime in late Feb./early March. I recently bought a used 2 person sauna, the infrared type. I've always liked saunas, working up a good sweat and finally talked my wife into letting me get one. The reason I'm posting is that I read on a FAR Infrared sauna web site that silicone implants will melt at 200 degrees celsius and that you should check with your surgeon before using. I'd hate to have to get rid of the sauna after wanting one for so long... Has anyone asked this question? I can't imagine getting to 200 fahrenheit, let alone celsius...I have mine set around 140 fahrenheit. At 200 celsius, wouldn't you pretty much be on…

How many calories per day do you eat when you workout? I know I have been eating too many calories to lose weight and so yesterday I really cut back, did my protein, etc. I never really felt hungry but I had a headache most of the day and when I went to the gym last night, I just felt weak and I know I didn't workout as good or as hard as I normally do and I felt like it was due to the lack of calories. I need to find a happy medium. Can someone give me a sample menu of what you eat on the days you workout and about how many calories, carbs, protein, etc you eat? Thanks.

  37. Hi.. I am getting banded in 1/10. The good news is I have always been fairly active, and belong to a gym that I actually like attending. How soon after surgery were you able to start taking the different classes at the gym (or doing the DVDs at home? I know I can go walking ASAP, but I was wondering about swimming, spinning, yoga, pilates, cardio ball, etc. You know...all those fun classes that make working out in the winter more fun! Also, I have a few sessions with a personal trainer, when do you think I could start some light weight training?

Is anyone interested in a free trial gym membership? The National Body Challenge by discovery health network has an 8 week body challenge. You get a trial membership good from Jan. 5 - March 2. I signed up last year and decided to buy a membership. I haven't gone as much as I should. And, they are limited on Bally's locations, but if you are anywhere near one, it's fun to have the free membership. My daughter got the free membership with me last year but did not sign up after the 8 weeks. She called me today and asked me to go online and sign her up, she's been gaining weight. So I signed her up today. Just thought it might help someone who might not know about it.

I have been religiously training, running about 20 miles a week. I highly suggest the nike-plus I pod training program. It helps motivate and chart your progress. I should finish in 2 hours time, at a pace of 9-9.5 minutes a mile. All in all things are going good. My wife and I bought a brand new boat and have become avid wake boarders. Probably one of the most intense work outs there is.
