Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by FurEllie,

At 46 I bought myself a Wii and the Dance Dance Revolution. Granted, I'm still in beginner mode and probably will be for awhile, but I have to literally STOP myself from playing  I don't use the arm things - I have arm weights I can use while watching TV - just the legs. But I am getting sore so I know muscles are being used and I'm working up a good sweat. They have a workout mode on there that shows how many calories you've burned - haven't tried that yet. I'll still use my treadmill and once my stomach heals I want to get a personal trainer for at least a month or so to show me what specific exercises I need to do but this is a fun diversion. If you're b…

I love scuba diving, and I was wondering what info you have all gotten. I realize that ideally the band has only Fluid in it, I am worring that air trapped in the pouch and stomach during an uncontrolled ascent might cause a slip. I called Inamed and they said no research had been done on it and therefore could not give me an answer. My Doc offered an unfil before going (for the standard fee of course!) From what I have read on here many have gone without any problems! I was wondering if i should limit my dives to places with a cable or rope so i can better control how fast I surface. Any thoughts??

I'm hoping for some help and some suggestions, please.... Quick reference--surgery was Dec.12, 2007 at 294# First fill 1/29/08 282.5 I rescheduled my second fill for a week later because I haven't lost but 2-3 pounds since my first fill and am too embarassed to go just yet. I don't want to be accused of not working at this....I am the first to accept responsibility for not working hard enough to lose weight, and I know the band only works when I work with it. With that said, I am working really hard with few indiscretions--a piece of chocolate on Valentine's Day, etc. My "cheating" is measured and calculated if and when I do it. I am seri…

I'm headed to the gym for the first time on Friday. I didn't work out before surgery, other than walking to and from the refrigerator. :blushing: I'm not sure what I should do my first time out. I don't want to be dying the next day. LOL. My surgery was 2 weeks ago, do I need to start off slow? I prefer the elliptical over the treadmill (clearly, as I have a treadmill that hasn't seen my booty in years). Should I do any of the machines, or just cardio? Or just walking? Or just sit in the hottub and then say "oh yeah, great workout!"? Help!

  9. Hello there. I've been banded for about 19 months now. I'm down 65 lbs from being banded and an additional 40 preop for a total of 105 lbs. My body looks like crap. I have a huge flub of fat on my stomach and my tights are not tight at all. The only exercise I've done has been walking on the treadmill and working out with a fitness training. I have not done both for several months so. The first 100 lbs was rather easy. I have 35 more lbs to go and its a real bitch now. Any of you have a good story as to how you made it to goal weight through exercise? It seems like it has been 6 months since I've lost any weight. Part of my problem is I feel really comfortable …

Does anyone else here have a spinning addiction? I think there was another thread about spinning some time back but I thought I would start a new one and see if there are still spinners out there. For me, I am totally addicted. I have taken 5 classes this week alone. For anyone thinking about try it - I was not in good shape when I started 3 months ago and was very nervous about keeping up but it worked out fine for me!

I have been walking briskly for about 2 months now. I have got up to 3 miles 3 times a week on a walking path. The other days only around 2 miles on a treadmill plus weight training 3-4 times a week. The past 2 weeks, I have had severe cramping in my calves and my back hurts really bad. I am 54 years old so that may have something to do with it but I feel as if I am missing something in my diet, vitamins or something. I have also stopped losing weight which has not been coming off real well anyway. I have to keep an eye on the calorie intake to be sure I get at least 800 calories a day. I have started a protien shake but the cramping is still there. Any suggestions apprec…

I am sure I will get the answer to this from my surgeon, but I wanted to ask here as well. Here is my mini survey: How soon did you start exercising after surgery? What kinds of activities? Were you active prior to surgery? Trying to make some plans. Thanks for the feedback.

  22. Started by Ceradad,

I almost think I am. I am now getting up 40 minutes earlier in the mornings to do 1/2 hr of cardio on the treadmill at home before I hit the gym to do cardio there. I would just do it all at home, but I love the cardio cinema we have at the gym. Makes the time fly. I can't do more than 50 minutes at the gym in the mornings because I need to catch the bus into dt mpls for work. I keep trying to figure out more ways to get more cardio in w/o taking time away from the family at night. Plus, I have to go to sleep around 9:30 at the latest to get up and start the madness again. Am I starting to become too obsessed with cardio? I think I might be.

I have a gym membership, and they contract with a few different personal trainers. Am I too fat for one? I'm afraid they are going to be like "get on treadmill and start walking and don't stop until you lose 50 pounds and THEN call me". lol Maybe I need Bob and Jillian.

Made a total fool of myself. Of course there were mirrors on every wall. I looked like an episode of I Love Lucy.... :frown: There was a man next to me. its been a rough few months. i have not been exercising as much or as hard as i should be and the scale has not moved as much as i know it could. soooooo.... until my Tummy Tuck on 29Feb, i commit to do the following: Hard cardio for 45 minutes or more a day for 5-6 days a week Strength training every other day. i will take one (only one) 'recovery' day off a week. i will also fuel my body appropriately. if i eat foods that are not appropriate with me losing weight, i will up the cardio the following day by 20 minutes - even if it's my 'recovery' day.

My friends ask me how I find the time, which is one thing I always said I didn't have (not for exercise at least). Well, I realized that after work (I teach Kindergarten) I would come home and plop my fat behind on the couch. I would watch TV and surf the net until time to cook dinner. Well, guess what? that is when I exercise. I always thought that if I was working out, I just wouldnt have time to get all the things done that I needed to get done. I've been using one for about 3 weeks and haven't lost/gained any, and maybe I need to kick it up some? I'm also doing step aerobics, strength training, and yoga. I've been using it on levels 3 and 5 for 35 minutes going betweek 2.5 and 3.7 miles. I feel like I'm running on it, but who knows! Any suggestions? I've been pleateaued for about 2 months and I still have another 75 or so lbs to go! HELP!

Hi all. So what are your doctors telling you about how much they want you excercising? Do they distinguish how much cardio and how much strength training they want you to do? or do they just say how many days a week? My primary care Dr. is hounding me about excercise. She says that for weight loss I should concentrate more on Strength to build some muscle so I burn more calories at rest. However cardio is super important. She says I should be working out 5-6 days a week. Like 3 days strength and 2 days cardio. I started walking at lunch for 45 min 3 times a week, she says that not enough. I said I'm doing baby steps, don't want to go balls out right away and get burnt…

Is anyone out there consistently using their treadmill for exercise? I just bought one, to replace the one I had a few years ago and never used, and I've used it for the last 9 days in a row. I'm trying to not do the same workout each day, but only time wise. I average between 15-66 minutes a day. I try for no less than 20 minutes. My speeds so far are 2.5-3.0 (I did do one minute of 4.0 at a slight jog yesterday) with no incline. I plan to increase this and hopefully get to where I'm doing between 30 minutes to an hour each day with increased speed and inclines. What do you do on your treadmill?

It's $49 and they offer a 10% discount to WLS surgery patients (use discount code: WLS). This thing sits on your waistband and counts calories all day long. You can either enter them on bio trainer's website and use their menu options, calorie tracking, etc. for a fee or just write down your daily totals and keep track. I find myself wanting to increase the total calories burned each day so I improve. I like it better than a pedometer just counting steps or the heart rate (Mio) which may or may not calculate calories burned correctly. Wha…
