Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Just_me,

Hi everyone, I had surgery 3/19 and have lost 14lbs. I have mainly walked 2 miles 4 times a week and want to increase my activity to start running again. When did people start more streneous excercise after their surgery? I tried to run for a minute or so the other day and got dizzy. I don't want to push it too soon but the loss has already help increase my energy level and want to get back to running. Thanks

I have decided to start walking/moving this month to see if that will 'jumpstart' my weightloss. My question is : Which is better? walking for 20-30 minutes every day or walking for 1 hour 3x/week ?

ok I have an odd question...while working out does anyone wrap their abs in suran wrap?? :confused2: I see a few women at my gym that do this and being the odd duck that I am I wanted to try it. so I was just wondering if anyone does it and what does it do for you? does it help you suck it in? help lose weight in that area? can I do this with my thighs also? lots of silly questions I know but if anyone has done this or knows anything about it I would appreciate the info.

After reviewing the threads in this forum I wanted to throw out what has worked for me. I have lost 60 pounds in my first 100 days of post lap band bliss. I do the proper diet with just a few exceptions a day. I asked my wife if it was ok to really focus on my health/body and would she pick up the load if I worked out 3 days a week. She is a great lady and has done just that. I started at the local YMCA doing 1 hour of cardio and hated it. TV, Ipod reading a book but nothing made the dreadmill any more tolerable. Once I started losing weight my friend at church asked if I wanted to play basketball in the church league and I passed on it since I wasn't ready …

I could really use your words of encouragement especially as I begin my training. Thanks. (By the way my ticker is probably way off. My current wt. is 165 lbs.) More info on the walk. Okay this will be a crazy & weird question to ask, but I'm curios to see if it's happened to anyone else. I work out at least 4-5 times a week for an hour . And I mean i "work" out!!! I do spinning twice a week and then I do a crossfit training class(kind of like bootcamp) well, for the last month I didn't loose any weight. i chalked it up to gaining muscle. I have been unable to go to the gym for two weeks (sick children) and i have lost 3 pds this week!!! Whats up with that. I've noticed when I DON'T work out as much i start to loose more weight? make any sence??? would love to hear if this has ever been a "problem" for you!

I have fibromyalgia and I'm really worried about the exercise routine after I have the surgery. What if I am unable to do any exercise (like now) because of the pain levels I experience 24/7? If you were to ask me how bad the pain is from the Fibromyalgia, daily, I would have to say 8 out of 10 on a good day. (10 being the worst) How do I deal with that?

Just wondering if anyone knows if it is normal to stay at a plateau after 2 weeks of majorly working out at the gym or is my body just being super difficult. I have worked out burning 600 cals a day for 6 days each week, I also started doing weights, squats and crunches. I feel like my body really doesn't want me to see the 100's! I am so frustrated right now ....I am almost (but not going to) throw in the towel. I just started crying after stepping off the scale today. Any words of advice or encouragment:crying:?

My personal challenge for April will be: first week...burn 450 cals on whatever piece of gym (or home) equipment I want 5 times a week second week...burn 500 cals " " third week...burn 550 cals " " fourth week..burn 600 cals" " I will try to get it all in at once but if I have to I will do a little in the morning, and a little at night. I really want to be under 200 pounds next month! Anyone can join me on this one at your own pace or target calorie loss. I made my ticker so that it equaled 22 workouts (give or take).

  14. I dont know how low carbers do it, my diet is carb based and always has been. I couldnt run without carbs in my diet. But I'm 3 days from a 15km race, and am trying to now carbo and Water load to be well hydrated and have my muscles full of glycogen. oatmeal for Breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, Pasta or rice for dinner from now till Saturday. It sounds so easy doesnt it? Its honestly like staring at a pile of house bricks, contemplating eating all that. Trouble is, I know from experience that carbo loading and 3 days complete rest will ensure me a GREAT run on Sunday. But it sure is very hard work!

Well its been a year since surgery now, and I have already ran in two half marathons, so its now time to train for the full marathon. I have up'd my training to 28 miles per week in running. I still need to loose twenty more pounds to be under the "clydesdale" rating for the marathon. I ran the half in 2:02 which placed me in the top 15% of the runners. So if I can finish the full marathon in a good time, I may qualify for the NY and/or Boston marathon which I will participate in if I can. I can run 15 miles right now without stopping or walking, so if I can get up to 20 miles without walking or stopping than I should be able to do the full. For anyone who runs I…

  22. I worked out at Shapes today for the first time. I only did 15 mins stationary bike, 5 mins elliptical, and 5 mins on another cardio machine like a "skiing" motion, no clue what its called. Anyway, I felt great after I was done until about 15 mins or so after leaving while I was driving, I suddenly felt really dizzy & sick to my stomach. I had to pull over & blast my a/c on my face for a few mins till it passed & I was able to drive again. It was scary, I thought I was gonna wreck my car cuz even my vision got blurry when I got dizzy. It came on so fast, no warning at all. What would cause this? Whats your fav classes/machines, etc.? I cant wait to start on Monday! I plan to go every weekday morning after the kids go to school & on Saturdays when they are at dance class (8yr old) & horse ranch (14yr old) They also have a kids program after school hours so my 8 yr old daughter can go w/ me 2x's a week too. I am so pre op motivated right now, I just hope the few weeks I cant exercise after surgery dont mess that motivation up, but I doubt it will!

  33. Hi: I've been banded since July and have lost 114 pounds. I think a good part of my loss is attributable to all of the walking that I've done. Now that I'm getting down to fighting weight I am thinking I should make sure that I'm working hard enough when I walk. There was no question about that a hundred pounds ago. I bought one of those fitness watches with the heart rate monitor, pedometer, etc. What heart rate should I be shooting for? I'm 48 years old, current weight is 210, and I'm 5'7" tall. I'm going to be walking, not running (yuck!). Please let me know if you know the answer. Thanks. Sue

Hi all. I want to start by saying how thankful I am to be banded! I have never liked exercise. I hate sweating, and exhersion doesn't appeal to me! That being said, since banding and losing the initial weight, I decided to start working out. First I used the elliptical in my home that was so lonely for so long. After about 6 weeks, I got bored, so now I have joined a gym. Very nice place with all the amenities I could want. I have been there almost every day since joining! I am no longer dreading getting sweaty. I am no longer hitting the snooze on my alarm clock 42 times cause im so tired. I feel like a new person. I guess I am a gym rat...hahaha

I had been doing light walking at home, but I really wanted to do weights, crunches and heavy treadmill stuff. Good news! I did the circuit twice, leg presses included AND, I did some crunches. I started slow to see if the port area would hurt, but it didn't!! I'm so thankful. I did about 20 crunches to start off slow and not push it, but not once did it hurt or pull. I did stretches, leg lifts, and 25 minutes on treadmill as well. Hopefully my doc won't get too upset, but shoot,…

Hey people. I was just banded on February 11th and am so excited to get healthy. I'm a single mother of a small child. I need to get in exercise but it seems virtually impossible with him. We've been taking walks when the weather permits but I cannot get much speed going while walking with him. I really cannot afford a gym and feel guilty about having him in daycare all day long while at work, only to take him to another daycare at the gym! So, I'm looking for a reasonably priced treadmill! I'm in Kansas City, Missouri..so if any of you guys have a treadmil you no longer want/need and would like to get rid of it..let me know. Thanks!!

Do people take rest days from exercising without feeling guilty? When I was a runner 25 years ago, I took a day off per week. Now I do about 25 minutes exercise a day and had only two days off in 2008 so far, both for other events. It may seem a bit silly, but I don't feel I deserve a day off because I'm not exercising enough. So, what's your exercise plan? Does it include regular planned days off?

Last Sunday Jan. 13th I ran the PF Changs Rock N Roll Marathon. It was the greatest experience of my life, except for my wedding and birth of my daughter. It was grueling, but felt so good. Out of 30,000 racers I finished 8807th and finish 670 in my division. Not bad I beat almost 22000 people. I ran it in 2:18 min. I ran the first 10 miles non stop, walked 1, and ran the last 2 strong. When I finished I wasn't even breathing heavy, my foot was sore thats all. I got my finishers medal and shirt and went home and imediately signed up for another half marathon that is Feb. 17th. I am probably going to do the Scottsdale Half Marathon in March as well. I am hooked.

Hi peeps, So I started running intervals last month. I had already been doing 5-6 days per week of good solid cardio, 45-60 minutes per session, and I've been weight training for about 3 months now. I needed to start doing something more to keep improving, though, so I thought running (jogging, I guess) seemed like a good next step. I think my pace is reasonable and I am up to running for about 6 minutes at a time (the most I've done is 7) and interspersed with brisk (3.5-4.0mph) walking, am up to a total of about 16 or 17 minutes per 45 minute cardio session. I do this 4-5 times per week. This is on a treadmill at a 2.0% incline. My running/jogging pace is about 4…

I've never done ballet, but my daughter is in ballet classes and so we're learning the terminology. I'd like something that both tones muscles, but keeps up a decent pace. I've done Pilates in the past and have the Windsor pilates videos, but I don't like how slow they are. There's just not enough reps for me to feel like I'm getting anything done. You know you've got to get moving. You resolve to park the car a few blocks from work, take the stairs, and hit the gym after work. But a few weeks pass and before you know it, parking spots start opening up right in front of the building, the elevator is already in the lobby, and you've worked late every night that week. It's not that you don't know how to get fit, you just can't seem to stay motivated. We all know people who are religious with their workouts. So, what's their secr…
