Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

Hi All, I've been banded for 3 weeks already. I've been going to the gym for two weeks already. I go five days a week for one hour. I do the bicycle for 30 minutes, I walk for 15 minutes and I jog for 15 minutes with no problems. The problem is that if i try to run fast the part where i have the port starts hurting alot and i was wondering if that's going to be forever. I guess this question is for those who have been banded for a longer time than I have. I used to play soccer and I'm itching to start playing again. Any advice or comments will be gladly appreciated. Keep up the good work everyone....and losing weight.

  2. Hi all -- I've never been good at exercising (Hate it, plus leftover gym class trauma). Now I have to do it to work with my band so here I am. I know there are some runners out there, and i'd like to ask for your advice. I have never run before but want to try it because: 1. running burns many more calories/hour than walking and other exercise that I can do. (I don't swim.) 2. I don't have to buy special equipment except sneakers. 3. It looks/sounds cool. But I am really scared: what if I get hurt? That's the big one. But also: What if I hate it? What if I suck at it? What if I can't do it because I am too fat? Should I try running or just go with something e…

I have struggled with my weight all my life. Before I got pregnant I was going to the gym and killing myself eating healthy food while others around me were eating Krispy Kremes. The weight lost was almost non-existant. I got my band on 8/9/07, a week later I was exercising. For the first time in my life I could see a weight loss difference after exercising. Man that was AWSOME!!!!! It made me feel so good, it made me want to go exercise just so I could jump on the scale and see it working. My weight loss is at a plateau and I am dying for my first fill, but I just wanted to share my excitement with the rest of you all. I can't wait for my fill so I can see those …

I am so anxious to start working out. I have been walking some, but not nearly enough. I had surgery on August 28th, I am still sore when I bend over so I'm sure stretching is out of the question. Ideas would be very helpful. I am worried that the longer I wait the better chance I have of getting saggy!

I got one of the Tanita scales that measures body fat and Water, etc. I know, I know those things aren't accurate....so I thought I would just use it to trend my BF, y'know? I mean, it is pretty consistent from day to day, so whatever it IS measuring, it's measuring consistently. Ok, so I've been using this scale for about a month. And according to this scale it says my BF is going UP, my water is going down and my weight is going down. What this tells me is that I'm depleting muscle!!! WTF??? I'm doing it all by the BOOK!! :help: Any words of wisdom out there??

Ok. on the advice of those here, I started the Cool Running "Couch to 5k" program today. :whoo: But I know to keep myself motivated, I'm going to have to keep it fun. I took two suggestions that I noted from other threads here: 1. Bought new exercise clothes -- specifically shoes. And since they were having a BOGO sale, I had to buy another pair too. :rolleyes 2. Music -- I knew there was a reason to keep that Awesome 80's CD around. Nothing like trite tunes with a beat (anyone remember the Go-GO's??) to keep up the motivation. No need to think about it, just keep moving! Any other suggestions out there to make exercise fun? frog.

I was banded at the end of June this year, and met a good friend online at this site...(she was banded in July). We've both been commenting on how we know we should exercise, yet neither one of us had started yet. She came up with a great idea, that I'd like to pass along to everyone. I live in Upstate NY, and she lives in Long Island. She calculated the mileage from my town to hers, and we're now on an exercise competition to see who could do that distance first. We're both walkers and/or exercise bikers so it's pretty even. We just started this on 9/1, and so far I've had the competitive ambition to walk 2 to 2.5 miles every day. This is exactly the kick in th…

Okay here is my perdicament. I have finally decided to take up exercising seriously and I have a membership to our local YMCA which I just love. Okay my problem is at first I was thinking that as long as I was doing cardio I was doing good. I was loving the elliptical machine. So along comes a guy into my life that is big into working out and tells me no no..I need to just do the treadmill and walk and burn the fat. Keep my heart rate at a certain rate..about 119 and don't go over. So thats what I've been doing..and switching working out my arms and legs on the machines..(abs every time ). I am confessing to falling off the exercise wagon. I quit smoking 7 days ago and that first week I was pretty depressed. I just didn't CARE about going to the gym. Not at all. I was just giving myself lots of permission to do anything I wanted....except smoke. Ok...so that worked. I'm still smoke free. Well, now it's time to get back at it. Enough rest. EXCEPT that Saturday I had a massage and the masseuse was doing some wierd quad stretches on me and has apparently hurt my lower back quite badly. I have a weak back anyway. It WAS getting so much better with exercise and now, today, I can barely walk. It's gonna take another 2-3 days before I can get to the …

<sigh> I've been swimming for exercise for the past few weeks, and I've noticed as my endurance increases and I do more, my lungs / chest have been hurting when I breathe (after the exercise). It's a bronchial / airway thing and I've really had it all my life (again, after I have exercised in the past). I remember feeling it in my teens and 20's, but since I've never been an exercise guru or stuck with exercising for more than a few months at a time, I never paid much attention to it. I've been trying to figure out what it is and the only thing that I can find on the internet that seems to match is exercise-induced asthma. I'm not wheezing (yet), but I am tak…

Exercise is generally a foreign term to me. I tried the gym but it was too much for my body right now.. I do walk away the pounds, and walking my dog.. Anyway, since I've been losing weight, I am a top heavy person, HUGE stomach.. but now my stomach sides, the 'love handles' which have always poked out bad, especially when sitting (and toppling over my pants).. seems to be getting worse with the weight loss. When I'm standing up, it looks pretty good from the weight loss, but when I sit down it seems 'squishier' and more loose.. Anyone know any ab/love handle specific exercises that are not too intense for someone still 100lbs overweight? I want to be able to do t…

  20. I read several posts within another thread on bicycling and it has me interested in taking it up as an exercise regime especially when we go camping on weekends. I know most skinny tired racing bikes would not hold up to 400 lbs and the ones I have seen on the internet for "Big People" are way out of my price range. Would a Schwinn Heavy Duty handle this kind of weight? Any other affordable bikes out there? :help:

Well this former couch potato is going to attempt the San Antonio marathon on November 11th - I just registered this morning! I have been running for the past 10 weeks or so, and am gradually increasing my distance. When I started I couldn't run for more than a minute without stopping - I ran 10 miles this morning with no stops! I run in a 5k race every 2 weeks, and I have registered for a couple of 10ks, a half-marathon, and a 25k between now and race day. I am far from fast, but boy, am I enjoying it! With this exercise, I am losing about 3/4 pounds per day and my intake is about 800 calories - mostly Protein. If I can do it - anyone can do it!

  22. Stupid question for the experienced bandsters- but has anyone had issues with the port or slippage with crunches/sit ups? I am NOT exercising yet aside from walking- going to wait until about 6 weeks out to start. I can't help but wonder if it will feel strange/hurt/cause slippage when I do start. Anyone?

I posted this is the main forum yesterday and no one answered me, so I'm trying again here. I just recently took up power yoga and am concerned that some of the moves could increase the risk of slippage because they can cause your internal organs to shift. Has anyone heard anything about this or know if yoga is safe with the band? Thanks!

I was confused on what I should be doing for cardio, but I think I understand now. I've been at the gym for about 4 months now. At the beginning I was told not to go above a heart rate of 125...just slow and steady. Then after awhile I was told "I should bump up my cardio"...then told to add interval training....I was getting confused!! You might be too. I found this article that I thought was very good at explaining it ALL! High Intensity Interval Training

  26. I've seen examples of a few bandsters who turn to exercise and go crazy with it. Maybe it's replacing over eating with another crutch, and in this case it's exercise The Addiction Transfer thread ( http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f15/addiction-transfer-37273/ ) spurred this in my head. So for those of you who are like the above, I'm wondering what your view toward it was before hand. Did you enjoy it? Did you hate it? When did you start working out more and more? I guess I'm trying to see if there's a correlation between those who turn to exercise, and see if I may fall into that category down the road?

Hi- For years I had been an avid hiker, but for the last 10 years I have been too fat to hike. I figured I would try it again. I went out this morning for what was supposed to be an hours walk-well, guess who got really lost? I took about three hours to get off the mountain. But I did it!!!!!! :whoo:It was hard. My calorie monitor watch says I burned about 1700 calories. Now that's a workout. Now I want to go back ASAP to find out where I messed up!

  30. hi everyone: I used to exercise all the time and I had lost 150lbs on my own doing it. i loved it when I was into it but then of course I stopped it all together and gained all my weight back my question is as follows: at my current weight of 239 lbs, I do not exercise because I leave the gym limping. I have knee pain every day and therefore am not exercising because of course, i have that as an excuse. for people that were really big, now that you are exercising and you lost enough weight to do so, do you find that the knee pain went away enough to let you get your cardio done? thanks
