I just had my surgery on Aug 28th, and am anxious to get back to swimming. I remember the nurse in the hospital saying to hold off on baths or swimming, but when is it safe to return to it? All my incisions have closed up. Thanks!

For those of you that enjoy yoga, how long was it before you started doing it again? I'm only a month out from surgery and I want to give myself time to properly heal. I will check with my doctor but I wanted to hear when you tried it and if there are any positions that were uncomfortable.

Hey guys- just approved for surgery. I'm pretty active right now- I try do Water aerobics resistance training and walking. My fear that keeps lingering in my ear is after surgery I'll be very weak and not have the energy or desire to excerise. The little voice in my head keeps saying " you won't be eating very much and you will be tired or will get low blood sugar when exercising. 1. Help me get over these negative thoughts. 2. How do you keep hydrated during exercise? I'm use to downing 24 ozs after an exercise session. 3. Anyone take water aerobics- how long until you started back? I take deep water aerobics and have been noticing that I acidently swallow water d…

I was just banded by Dr. Ortiz on 8/16 and am feeling great. In the literature I was giving, it said no crunches for 3 months. Does anyone know why this is?? Is it because they don't want us working our ab's or because the motion of the "crunch" might cause complications with the band? Is it ok to do other types of ab exercises and just not do crunches? What were you told?

I need a kick in the behind to get me motivated to use my treadmill. My mind knows I need to do 30 minutes each day, but my bones and fat arse keep whispering in my ear, "Hush now, isn't it soooo much more warm and comfy here on the couch with our good friend, the remote? We'll start that exercise nonsense tomorrow . . . " I saw this on another site and love it: http://www.q104.com/morningshow/images/audio/treadmilldance.wmv How about some suggestions for motivational music for at least 30 minutes? Anyone?

I've seen this mentioned on the "Self Defense" thread but wanted to share with all of you some more information on the subject. Prior to my having surgery, my husband and I took Krav Maga classes for a few months before our schedules forced us to quit. Now that things have lightened up a bit, we will be resuming our classes very soon. The class is 1 hour long and kicks your A**!! You're constantly moving and the sweat just pours off of you. I would recommend it to anyone interested in an intense workout. Krav-Maga (translates to Contact Combat) is the highly effective battle tested Israeli system of self defense, fighting skills and defensive tactics. http://www.kr…

What are the general consensus on this? I am afraid to do weight training, or sit ups because i'm afraid it will mess up the band. Is this just a myth? What do you know about the topic? Thanks!

My Dr. wants me to exercise 7 days per week for one hour a day. :omg: I really need to increase my exercise as I am not doing anything on a regular basis. I am wondering what others are doing and how often? I have a 7 year old child, I work full time, my husband works full time and goes to school so time is very limited. :phanvan

I'm not even kidding, I was invited to the Palomino club, one of the oldest strip clubs in Vegas, to do a Slumber Party in one of their private lounges. It was one of the coolest nights I've spent in Vegas, because the owner's girlfriend took me on a private tour of all the secret rooms, where I literally felt the eerie and exciting ghosts of mobster and celebrity pasts in some of the now-closed off private areas. One VIP room was untouched and stood still in time covered with red velvet walls and etched mirrors with one single dance pole in the center. I could hear the thump of the music through the floor, and since we were alone in that forbidden, fantastic place whe…

This may be a stupid question but... does the amount of toning and exercise you do while losing weight determine how much excess skin you will have after weight loss? Or will you have it regardless? I read somewhere that certain areas can't be toned with excercise and must be surgically modified... Just wonderin... Virginia

I took the Mtn bike back.....I find myself riding pavement more than anything and the Mtn bike is not very efficient for that. This bike...absolutely ROCKS! I cannot believe the difference riding this vs. my Mtn bike....I can pick it up with one hand easily and hold it out at arms length. My mtn bike was a tank....I cannot wait to hit the road tomorrow night with it. I feel like a kid at X-Mas. :heh: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/030.000.000/030.000.006.asp?model=11262

Hi All" I was wondering what you thought about this. I was banded on July 24, and the dr. said no abdominal work. My usual exercise program is a circuit type program (like Curves, but a different organization). I went back today and began with some simple step work (one step up and down). A little bit of arm work (bicep curls) and a little walking in place, and some time on the stationery bike. I went pretty slowly, but I could actually feel the little work I did. Do you think its too soon to start working out even if I do it really lightly and stop when I feel resistance or discomfort? Thanks,

I was banded 5/8/06. I lost around close to 40 lbs to date. Anyway, I have been doing a lot of thinking about exercising and getting to a more active lifestyle in general. Especially since I have a 15 month old son and I want him to grow up healthy and active. I have joined my gym at work and I’ve been going 4-5 days a week. I do different combos of aerobic classes, cardio machines and strength training. I realize how important exercise is and how I have GOT to incorporate into my daily lifestyle. It has finally clicked in my brain after all of these years. So anyway, I picked up a flier in the gym yesterday for a 5K run/walk. My hubby and another friend have decided to s…

Name: Denise Austin What I want you to know: “You don’t have to do tons of sit-ups to tighten your tummy. Wherever you are—sitting in your car, cooking a meal, working at your desk—pull your tummy up and in, like you’re zipping up a tight pair of jeans. If you hold it for five seconds, it’s the equivalent of one sit-up. Practice this regularly every day, and in three to six weeks, you’ll see results.” Name: Michael George What I want you to know: “You have to give a new fitness program some time to deliver noticeable results. When you start cardio and strength training, you might actually gain weight at first because you’re putting on lean muscle faster than you’…

I anticipate getting my band @ the end of next month. Using a BowFlex and walking will be my method of exercise. I am starting at the YMCA next week and would like to gain some knowledge of what to expect for a workout for an obese person. What is your workout routine? Do you use a combo of cardio and weights or other like swimming? Do you have a trainer? What are the benefits? What are good questions I should ask a trainer? Should I have a trainer experienced in working with WLS patients? We really can't afford a full-time trainer, but I was thinking I could purchase a few sessions to get me started and build from there. When I am ready to move on, perhaps another session with a trainer. I would LOVE to hear some feedback on this and I thank you all in a…

Congratulations to all of you who are doing so well...it seems your fitness levels rival that of professional athletes. You have much to be proud of. As I read through the various threads on the exercise forum I noticed that there was very little discussion/information/comments for those who are obese and struggling with even the thought of exercise. I am hoping this thread will help those who are very new to exercise and are generally intimidated by the thought of going to a gym, or even wearing work out clothes. I am a personal trainer with a number of certifications and many years of experience. I have worked with individuals who's mobility was extremely limited by…

I used to be an avid rider.....before I got fat and lazy I would usually log 20-30 miles a night on pavement and 2 times a week 15 miles or so on heavy cross country hilly terrain. It rocked and I loved it...which when it comes to excercise I think it helps if you love what you are doing.

Has anyone here tried boxing? I used to take kickboxing classes back in 1998 - 2000 but this is not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about actual boxing/training, i.e., sparring, jump roping, speed bag, bag punching..etc. I need variety in my workouts since I do it everyday, practically and I know me and ME gets very bored after awhile of doing the same things. There is a boxing gym not far from me that I am thinking about checking out this week to see if it's for me. Costs $75.00 per month and $25 registration fee. I have to come with all my equipment which only costs roughly $75.00 (gloves, hand wraps, head guard, jump rope). I have heard, read and have se…

Good morning guys, I've heard people who swear by it and others who swear against it. I've talked to a couple of personal trainers in the past and both insisted that strengh training is essential in weight loss and that you should do it since you start your weight loss journey, because gaining muscles boosts your metabolism, etc. I also talked to a nutritionist before who told me that I should wait until I have lost a larger amount of weight and then start strengh, otherwise my scale won't move. Losing inches is great, but I love to see my scale go down as well, I guess I can say that I'm addicted to the scale. (I know, I shouldn't) Ultimately, I just want to do what'…

I am supposed to be keeping my heart rate between 119 and 153 when I workout on the eliptical or treadmill. Yeah right?!?!?! I stay between 167 and 179. I know, that is high. To burn fat - I am supposed to stay in the low numbers - but man that makes for a REALLY long workout !!! I feel like I have accomplished something when I pound it out. I make sure I can talk while I am working out, and breath breath breath - through my nose! And of course drink drink drink Water. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Success/failure due to staying in the zone?
