The cardio that I do the most is the Elliptical Cross-Trainer (the one where you work your arms as well as legs) and the stationary cycle. My question has to do with the 'calculator' on each of these machines. If I do 20 mins on the X-trainer I'm sweating pretty good and it says I've burned about 200 calories. Then I move over to the cycle and do another 20 minutes. I sweat my TAIL off on that thing...it's dripping off me like crazy...and the machine says I'm burning about 100 calories. I don't get it. Isn't sweat a measure of how hard you are working? I keep my HR about the same for both but the cycle sure feels like I'm working HARD but burning 1/2 the calories a…

Anyone else running 5ks? I did my first one on the 16th June and ran/shuffled a 42min 45sec time. My second one was on the 23rd June and I ran a 39min 30 sec. I just did my third this morning - knocking the time down to 38mins and 3 secs - that's a pace of 12:15per mile! 6 months ago I was 315lbs and would be able to walk a few miles, but that would be it. Now I am training most days and down at 248. The "high" I am getting from the running is just incredible - and combined with the lapband, the weight is just falling off. I live in The Woodlands, TX, and there is a 5k race - "Run The Woodlands" on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month - I intend to run as man…

So, I've now become obsessed with this stuff. According to the guys I've talked to, this is pretty safe, if practiced correctly... Obviously, you take it little by little, but for what it is, it would be a blast and AMAZINGLY good excercise... This is what got me hooked: Relowd Parkour 2006 and other Stunts/Crashes Videos on StupidVideos.com Anybody up for a little training?

Thanks to rereading some of Puddin's posts, I decided to get finally get a BodyBugg. After not losing an ounce for over a month, I've lost 2 pounds in the five days that I've had it. If you're competitive (even with yourself) this gadget is great! I've had the device for five days. Since getting it, I've been in the gym every morning and have logged every morsel of food before eating it. It is incredibly motivating and fun to try to hit your "deficit" number for the day.

Hi, Yesterday I went and checked out a new fitness club here, Lifetime Fitness. I feel in love right about away. I have never seen a gym like it: beauty salon, cafe (w/wireless), pool cafe, tanning, 2 indoor pools (24 hours), 2 outdoor pools, 2 full court basketball courts, 100 classes a week, racquetball, squash, 2 hot tubs (indoor and outdoor), childcare, rockclimbing, etc. They have the largest gym floor I have ever seen. They have physical trainers that are on site from like 6-10 (mon-fri) and 6-6 (sat-sun) I think. The trainers have several desks on the floor and they will help you You can bring 2 free guests a month and they are $10 adults and $5 a child per…

HI all, I went to see the exercise physiologist yesterday and he tole me some great things. First, he said that biking was THE BEST cardio ever. Better than walking. No stress on joints at all. He said that if he could get everyone who starts on WLS journey to get a bike and ride it everyday they(the WLS clinic I go to) would have the number one success rate in the country. So I guess that is a NSV for me, since that is my favorite thing to do... Second he talked with me about strength training. I was a little concerned about adding weight and adding weight as the smaller weight became too easy, but he set me straight on a few things. 1) Testosterone is what bu…

Credit:books and tapes are now available to help the woman of size become fit and healthy. But what if you don't live in a large city and your town or city has no facilities for plus-sized women? Guess whatyou are still in luck; there are still ways for us to meet our own fitness needs. If you can afford it, hire a personal trainer. If you can't, you can begin incorporating more movement into your life on your own. Another idea is to contact a physical therapist from your local hospital and ask if they would like to earn a little extra money by helping you set up a suitable exercise routine. Whether we use a size-friendly gym, personal trainer, exercise videos, or j…

I thought I would start a thread to ask for suggestions. I originally put this in the main forum, but maybe I can double my chances of replies if I put it here, too! I want to load up my Ipod with songs that are fast, upbeat, happy...for when I start excercising. What are your favorite songs for exercising (sp)? I want to get lost in the music and just GO! Thanks, folks! Stef

I have searched the threads and what I have found people mentioning is that when you start to exercise the weight loss will slow down do to the fact that they are building muscle. My problem is that at this point I want to lose the weight more than I want to gain the muscle. I have to see the scale moving in the right direction. So what Im considering is not exerciseing until I have gotten to onederland, atleast 199.9. I dont want to start exerciseing now and risk losing the weight. I understand that I would be buiding muscle and losing inches, but if the scale stops moving Im going to get really discouraged. Is this a good or bad ideal? :help:

Hi you too, I wanted to get your opinions on something. I totally agree with the way you eat and exercise and you both are my role models!!!!! You are both such inspirations to me that to tell you the truth, I search out your posts because you always have awesome advice and healthy ways!!!! Heres the scenerio: I started April 5th with pre op diet at 305.5 Day of surgery, April 19th, was 295 When I went for my first fill at one month, May 21st, I was 273. I was not given a fill because I had lost too much weight. I dealt with that and was fine after about a week. I decided that it would be better to go for a longer time and loose weight on my own without bein…

So I went for my first run today...okay, so it was more of a run/walk, but at least i got out there and tried. I've been going to the gym regularly for about a year, mostly using the elliptical and or bike, so I feel like I'm not in bad shape, but my run was a bit pathetic. I couldn't run for more than five minutes at a time, then I would walk fast, run again, etc. Anyway, so i'm very curious to hear from other runners, how much you run, how you started, any tips, etc.

I can Water , pull weeds , go visit with neighbors outside and not break a sweat. I even sit outside in the shade (of course) and read. Before I would have to shower if I wanted to go anywhere else. It was like a workout. I even made a comment to my hubby about something I noticed and asked is that normal? He said well honey you didn't spend much time outside before. I missed out but not anymore. edie edie

I have a crazy schedule that prohibits a traditional gym membership. I know - a lot of people use that as an excuse, but I really do have a crazy life. My day starts at 5:00 a.m. I'm home from work at 5:00 p.m. and immediately pick up my son. He is 2 years old and goes to bed at 7:30 p.m. After 7:30 is when I make dinner, lunch for the following day and maybe throw in a load of laundry. I'm in bed by 9:30 p.m. so that I get enough rest to do it all again the next day. My point is - I rarely have an hour to myself to escape to the gym. PLEASE - does anyone have suggestions on how I could boost my activity level during the day? I would really appreciate it. I kno…

I've been kinda watching my resting heart rate because it's a good measure of how your health is improving (or not!). In the past few years like when I take my BP at home or at the dr's office, I've never noticed a heart rate below about 72. I've measured it the last 3 nights and am getting readings in the high 50's and low 60's!! I suppose it's a result of my recent love affair with exercise....but WOW....so soon and with such good results?? I've only been at it about 6 weeks! Lets see.... 10 beats/min = 600 beats/hr 600 beats/hr = 14,400/day 14,400/day = 5,256,000/year 5,256,000/year x 30 years = 157,680,000 heartbeats saved Hmmm...I think I just added 6 y…

I am your classic "pear shape". I have found that I seem to be losing more from the waist up, than from the waist down. I am doing recumbent bike or elliptical 30-60 minutes 4-6 days a week alternating with the Turbo Jam dvd's. My knees pretty much suck, they sometimes make noises that I have never heard (and I'm a nurse, lol). Squats and lunges both cause that grinding sound and mild pain. Does anyone know of any other exercises to target the glutes, hamstrings, quads, etc...????

I am so frustrated! I have been working with a personal trainer who has be on a schedule of cardio one day, upper body the next, cardio the next, lower body the next, etc. Well Saturday when I went in to do my lower body--I could hardly workout at all because my hamstrings were absolutely killing me! I do stuff on the floor with a fit ball, and I just couldnt lift it! I had so much pain and was so weak. I don't understand why, though. I didn't have any problems the last time I did my lower body workout, so I just don't know what happened in between there! And my gym is closed yesterday and today for the holiday, so I am freaking out about not being able to workout! I neve…

Calling all members of the body for life challenge #1 - who knows how many challenges we may do? So here is to the beginning of getting in shape - here are the rules: 1) Be true to yourself - this is a 12 week challenge, no one will be monitoring your exercises except you. So, your accountable to yourself, just remember, be true to yourself. 2) Take your before picture by Monday 4/23/07 and measurements (measurements are a must because some weeks while you are building muscle you might gain but lose inches) - 3) The program calls for 5 or 6 small meals a day, You may modify this to your needs - I will be modifying mine. 4) If you haven't read the book, you really ne…

I have recently started more jogging. I usually do 20 min on the stair stepper 20 min on the eliptical machine, and 20 min. alternating between jogging and power walking. I haven't been able to get past 10 min. jogging yet. I am wondering if I should skip the other two, and concentrate on building up to jogging longer. I am so tired of eating right drinking the Water and exercising and not seeing results. I had a resting metobolic test taken which showed I have a very slow metabolism. Is there any way to speed up a slow metabolism? I already have a lot of muscle in my thighs from all the weight routines I started a few years ago. I know muscle weighs more than…

I joined Planet Fitness a few days ago and went Saturday morning for the first time. I did 10 minutes on both the treadmill and recumbent bike to warm up, then the 30 minute circuit. Wrapped it up with 10 more minutes on the treadmill and 3.5 (was shooting for 10 but OH, MY GOD, IT HURT!) on the elliptical machine. I noticed the circuit training sign said not to do it two days in a row. What's the best way to make use of this gym membership? Go every other day? Concentrate on some machines one day and others the next? The first time I'll be able to do that Personalized build your schedule class is Friday. I don't want to lose motivation till then, but I don't want …

I have never owned a treadmill and I want to buy one, but the price varies so much that I can't determine what a "decent" one costs? Normally, I buy "middle of the road," but with treadmills, that's a couple of grand. Do I really need to spend that to get a good one? I tried looking at some buyer's guides online, but I got the feeling they were all bias because they always sell treadmills, too. I would appreciate any input.

Oh, yes, its that time of the year! Its time to go to the seaside! :biggrin1: Anyways, I am a great fan of scuba diving and generally swimming along shallow coastal regions/reefs. However, my doctor told me I should not do this, because there is chance for the band to slipp off. Honestly, I believe its a bunch of bull, since I read on the Internet that I can resume swimming after 4-6 weeks after operation! And I would rather swimm, since it is great aerobic workout that burns callories. Any opinions, experiences? :biggrin1:

I was wondering how many miles you exercise daily? Is it walking/running/jogging outside or inside on a treadmill? Do you use a bike? When you exercise on a treadmil or bike, Which do you focus on more? the time/carlories/miles ? I was told to go slow at first, Don't try to push for A LOT right off the bat. Because If I get to a standstill, I might try to kill myself to go that extra mile or two.

You guys will get a kick out of this. This weekend I drove my Mom to her best friend's birthday party in another state. Mom is 90. I was getting tired on the drive up, so I put my ipod shuffle on...It's all my upbeat workout music. Mom wanted to hear what it sounded like, so she put it on and was surprised that I had a lap band song on there. What? A lap band song? Mom doesn't hear well. So she started singing it in that overly loud off key way that we all sing when we have headphones on.... it was Donna Summers...."Lap band. Lap band for loooove. Yes it's my lap band lap band toniiiiight....." __________________

I have been working with a personal trainer now for two full months. I have a question that maybe someone else out there would know because they are not well versed on the Band. Yes, I have excess skin and trying to measure Fat percentage is almost ridiculous. In fact, My fat percentage went from 23% t 24% in 2 months. They have to pinch skin or use a hand held machine that they personally say isn't a guarantee it is correct. I started at 136 and I am now 143. I can only keep on thinking that it is muscle gain and that is it. I am watching to see if my clothes are getting tighter and I am not noticing that but when I look at myself in the mirror it feels as though …
