POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by LawrenShrinking,

Hey everyone! I just had my surgery on 11/15 and I’m having so much trouble getting my medications down. I crush them and try to mix them into things but it is so bitter that I have difficulty swallowing it. Any suggestions?

  2. Started by MariahS0105,

has anybody tried carbonated drinks after surgery? if so how long after surgery did you wait to try and was it successful? i LOVE seltzer water and can’t wait to have it again lol

  3. Started by ahillig,

I had the bypass done on August 28 and just had my 3 month post op visit. My surgeon is beyond thrilled with my results! I have lost over 50% of my excess weight to date and he said he wouldn't be surprised if I was near or at goal by 6 months. I also met with the nutritionist and she is perfectly happy with how things are going as well. I told her there are days I don't want to eat very much, if at all, and she said that's totally normal and fine but not to force myself to eat. She's ok that some meals I only get 1/4 cup of food and others I can eat a 1/2 cup. My goal is to be 199 by the new year, and if I keep losing at the rate I have been it's a very feasible goal! My…

  5. Started by Kimberly3,

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in January. It was actually really the final reason I opted for WLS. Anyway, most cases apnea gets better or even goes away post surgery. I was put on CPAP therapy right away. My sleep study showed I stopped breathing 62 times per hour. Yup more than once a minute! Essentially not getting any sleep at all. CPAP therapy has been miserable for me. The first three months I felt worse than before I started. 6 months in I started to feel better. Fast forward my surgery was October 15th. I wont lie I am anxious to get off the CPAP, but post surgery my apnea has gotten worse. I have started to breath through my mouth all of a sudden causing…

  6. Started by RA Girl,

My dr made me get off of all rheumatoid arthritis meds a month before surgery. My RA flared up so badly I could barely walk. I ended up having to take 3 months of disability. I couldn’t eat (mainly because of the RA) and lost a lot of weight quickly. Just beware if you find yourself in the same situation. I soldiered through with lots of help from my mom and boyfriend, but it wasn’t easy. On a side note, I also have the runny nose issue I’ve read about on here. Does that go along with auto immune issues?

  7. Hey everyone I'm feeling great. Been a big journey but I'm losing weight consistently. On average of 7lbs a week which I think is great. Seen surgeon yesterday he's very happy with me. Don't have to see him until 3 months post op. So far 12 weeks since I started my diet 88lbs gone. Surgery was 3 weeks ago 22lbs gone since then. I'm still mostly living off protein shakes with a little yoghurt not in an hurry to start real foods yet and the surgeon says that's fine take your time if you like. Fluids go down easily; water and shakes and a few cups of tea a day. No real issues at all I think I've been very lucky. Well for those w…

Hello everyone! I had my VSG done on 11/06. Things are cool so far. I'm just curious did anyone else stare repeatedly/keep going back to the approved foods list their doctor gave them, in hopes it would magically change or hope you'd find something you missed that you could eat? The liquid stage of this is not unbearable but sometimes I'm screaming in my head " if i have to drink one more meal im gonna lose it!" But then i regain myself, drink my shake and continue on haha.

Hey guys. I’ve been all over this website and it’s been helping a lot, but I have some complications I’d like to go over before I see my NUT and nurse practitioner this Tuesday. Originally I thought my new blood pressure meds had been making me feel faint and week, but now I’m thinking it’s a deficiency of either iron or protein or even both. So bad to where I was doing great walking after surgery up until I started feeling like this. Now I hardly do anything besides lay down. I mean I still try to walk around the house or do whatever I can but even standing up I feel faint and have a racing heart. It’s just frustrating. I had my surgery 17 days ago if that helps. But now…

How long should one be using laxatives post-surgery? I was advised that it may be a lifelong practice

  11. Started by mdhender87 ,

So I’m 5 1/2 days post op from gastric bypass. Still having pain of course but I’m wondering about how long that lasts...pain feels like a pulling burning sensation. I’m not having any other symptoms with it so I’m sure it’s normal but I’m ready to not be in pain.

I'm 6 weeks post op and have just started eating some soft meats. This is making me very sick and I've even experienced the dumping syndrome. Has anyone had this problem with meats? Any suggestions?

I tried having some creamed soup. When eating I got a sharp pain in my stomach. It stopped once I stopped eating. But it still concerned me. Is this a common thing? Is that just my stomach telling me that I'm full and I shouldn't have any more? Or should I be concerned?

Is it normal to lose weight and gain weight because I lost 4 pounds and then I gain to that back

  18. I have been pretty faithful to my doctors diet. I went to my 6 week follow up. I thought I would get praised on my decent weight loss and adherence to the plan but instead I got that I need to eat 1200 calories a day by the physician's assistant. strange that it even came up. I am getting the protein, etc in and following "their diet" I eat around 350 to 450 calories a day. I only know that because I use my fitness pal I didn't even think we "had" to track calories. I also email the nutritionist at this practice regularly and she seems okay with my diet. I sort of protested to this lady and she said my weight loss would be more... I thought it was irre…

When I had surgery on October 10 I weighed in at 235. I’m now four weeks post op and my weight is 218. I was under the assumption that I would lose more/faster by having RNY over VSG.. is my weight loss ‘normal’.. should I be losing faster? This weekend im allowed to start move from basic walking to real exercise.. I’m hoping that will help.

  20. Has anyone tried Nutrafol hair vitamins after getting the sleeve? I received a list of medications not to take 2 weeks before my sleeve which included Saw Palmetto in it because I guess it can cause bleeding? It was listed in the same category as Advil and Aspirin. I'm just wondering if anyone has taken these post surgery and seeing any results. My dietician wasn't sure so I don't know if it was just not to be taken before surgery but okay after.

  23. Started by Brent701,

Yesterday I had sushi for the first time since surgery it was also the first time having any rice since surgery. I was surprised just how filling even a tiny amount of rice was. I am able to eat about 6oz of food but rice really packed a punch even from a few bites. I rarely ate rice in the past but it was never something that I associated with being very filling.

I am 11 months post op and have gone from 336lbs to 228lbs at my lowest. I have been losing and gaining the same 10lbs for about 4 months. I do CrossFit 3 times a week. Any advice on how to get the scale to move again!!!

  26. Started by It's about Me,

Well I’m one year and six months post op and I have gained 8 pounds that I cannot seem to loose again. I feel sad and mad at myself. I started at 231 currently staying at 168... I don’t like myself right now.

For the past couple of weeks I’ve had a tingling feeling in my feet that would last for about 10 secs. Has anybody had this feeling?

  28. Started by almosttogoal,

What's the guideline for the amount of weight you can lift after surgery: how much and how long after? I don't mean lifting weights as in weightlifting, but more like: "You cannot lift more than 5 pounds for a week post surgery."

  29. Started by elmatador,

So I’m about 18m post-op, below target weight, and now working on adding muscle. Have been working with a personal trainer, and exercising 3 days per week for about 45min-1h per session. My problem, or concern at least, is that for the rest of the day after a workout, I’m just WAY hungrier than I’m accustomed to these days! I’m not sure how much is head hunger, but it feels different I think for my typical daily head hunger that I’ve gotten so good at recognizing. Anyone with experience with this, or advice?

  30. Started by Bypass2018,

Hi All, i just hit one year post op and Iv lost 140lbs but Iv been lacking motivation for about 4 months now and haven’t lost any weight. My recovery post op was a struggle with gout but I’m doing better then ever. However, I’m struggling to eat right and wanting to lose the rest of the weight. Any advice on how you stay motivated to continue this journey?

  33. I have been having uncomfortable Back Spasms quite frequently. I have to take Aleeve to get rid of the pain. Any Ideas what is causing them? I also have to urinate a lot more through out the night when I sleep. I get up at least 4 times a night. Very hard to get a good night sleep.

  36. Started by Clarish,

Im 11 days post op, before surgery I always attended various dance fitness classes! Im missing my fix already! I’m wondering how soon did you all return to exercise/gym? Thanks.

  37. Good morning everyone. Its late here in Australia but today (it's just turned Monday) I'll be 2 weeks post op! 14lbs since surgery; 80lbs since started my diet. I've been keeping track of everything and I'm feeling fine. Drinking water and shakes without any issues. HW 322 CW 242 GW 190 THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT

I’m 3 weeks post-op from my gastric sleeve. I’m curious if anyone has any good recommendations for a pre workout or if anyone has an tips about getting back into working out. thanks!!

  39. Hey there. So today I did my first weight in after being 1 week post op, and I weighted myself and only lost 2.2 pounds. Literally everyone I’ve seen or heard about looses 6-20 the first week...what’s going on with me? i follow my instructions. I have 60-70 G protein, about 400 cal and 2-7 carbs. Water is on average 30-45 oz. im extremely confused of why I didn’t lose any weight...help!!!

  40. Hey guys felt like writing a separate thread. I had my RNY 7 days ago top be exact. I've always been a big water drinker due to kidney issues. I expected post op not to be able to drink much but I'm still drinking like 3 litres a day just taking smaller mouthful and taking my time between bottles of water but definitely not feeling any issues Drinking this much.. It's like half of what i used to preop but I'm still constantly thirsty postop so water and protein shakes are no issues i just drink slower to be safe.. I'm not complaining it just feels like did I have surgery... Well besides the pain and weird noises coming from inside and the holes in…

  41. Started by sheslittletex,

Hi All. I am just over a month post VSG. I am drinking 60-80 ounces of water a day, just like pre-surgery. Pre-surgery I needed to use bathroom every 1/2 hour to hour to keep up, and it was always urgent. Now I only go around 3 times in an 8 hour period. I don't feel like I am retaining water, and no puffiness to indicate it. Anyone have similar, or know what this is about?

how soon after surgery were you able to travel by plane? i’m 6 weeks out and o have a trip planned in February. just wondering what everyone else experienced

  43. On Tuesday im 4 weeks post op and Im struggling to eat the 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food (pureed or soft) that my dietician has recommended. Doesnt matter what i eat (soft cereal / porridge / poached egg etc) I can only get through 3 teaspoons of food, over a 5 - 20min period. If i go a 4th teaspoon i end up with the sharp pain in my left shoulder and a horrible full feeling that lasts for about an hour after eating. I dont pile high my teaspoon its literally a small teaspoon amount. Should i speak to my dietician?? Last night we had a friend over for dinner who i havent told i had surgery and i tried to eat a small amount of pasta salad and the tinniest amount of steak …

  45. Started by karlee0206,

Hey All! I know that topic has come up a lot and I’ve tried searching but I was wondering what unflavored high protein powder you guys are using that has low calories. I’m just a week out of my sleeve surgery and I want to make sure I’m getting lots of my protein. I’m not liking the pre-made drinks or some HMR stuff that I have, so I’m hoping you guys know. I heard Genepro has high protein but had some lawsuits and might not be that actual high so looking for other options, maybe Isopure? Thanks!

Okay all, I'm 8 days postop and cannot stop thinking about sex. I've been so turned on over the last couple days my nipples are hard and sensitive and my clit keeps tingling. My husband and I attempted to have sex last night but didn't get very far as it got a bit too uncomfortable, mostly abdominal muscles pains. How long after did you all wait to have an orgasm? I'm so tempted to satisfy the urge but afraid it might cause more harm than good.

  47. Started by Luvlvnlyfe5,

I'm trying to decide what to wear and pack for hospital and what I need to buy for first few weeks post op. I'm not a sweatpants person so all I have are suits and jeans. Should I get yoga pants, drawstring no drawstring elastic???? I love to shop and I will go out of control if left to my own ideas.

  48. Just curious if anyone has had a significant rise in their Total Bilirubin and Vitamin B12 levels post op. My Bili is always on the high end of normal, or BARELY above normal. I was once told that I might have some sort of benign liver disease (I was 19 at the time - I am now 47), but no other doc was ever concerned as the rest of my liver function tests are usually normal. And while the only time I have ever had (knowingly) a Vitamin B12 level was pre-op... it WAS normal. When I got home from the hospital, I noticed online that my Bilirubin was much higher than my normal while I was in the hospital. I just assumed that it was due to injury/irritation of liver or gallblad…

I know surgery requires you to stop nicotine use( not an issue) due to nicotine potentially causing issues but wondering if anyone has used MJ for post op pain or even just recreational? Would there be any possible complications ?
