POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Love27,

I got my surgery yesterday the 23rd at 7am. Those gas pains are no joke! Feeling a lot better today hopefully they send me home today but the doctor wants me to drink two bottles of water but even when I sip it hurts and I get nauseous. I just want to get better and hope to heal quick. I was getting cold feet but this support group helped me push through this. You guy are awesome!

  2. Started by ahillig,

I'm 5 months post op and as of today, I only have 16lbs left until my goal! I see my surgeon for my 6 month post op visit in 4 weeks, fingers crossed I can be near, or at, goal when I see him again! It's so crazy going from a 2XL or 3XL to a large or medium top and large bottoms. I thoroughly enjoy shopping now and often go to stores just to try stuff on. I went to put on one of my favorite shirts yesterday that I haven't worn in about a month and it looked like a sack of potatoes on me. I've already had to resize my wedding rings and will probably have to do it one more time here soon, they're already starting to get loose again. I remember going shopping before hoping t…

Well hopefully someone can help me, I had my surgery July 3rd and since then my period has been all over the place even though I’m taking birth control pills. Last month i didn’t get my period and it seems like this month I won’t either. I’ve taken a lot of pregnancy test and they are all negative. is this normal? I’ve had the surgery for six months already shouldn’t I be getting a period with birth control?

  4. Started by kc892020,

OK so this may sound like a super dumb question and I apologize. How many minutes do you usually space between sips of plain water during an hour? I was told that it didn't matter as long as I tolerated water without pain, but I've been drinking so much water per hour I'm afraid I'm going to expand my pouch. My mouth has been so dry and my urine (sorry for TMI) hasn't been clear and the surgeon says it's because instead of 64 oz I should be aiming for 100 oz. Ugh. This is so frustrating. I'm so paranoid I'm going to wreck my pouch but at the same time dehydration is no fun.

Good morning everyone, I had my sleeve December 2, 2019 (8 weeks) and have had tremendous success so far. Here is the thing...I really have trouble eating/wanting to eat. Has anyone experienced this? I have this aversion to chewing in general and am swinging between stage 2 and 3. I know everyone is different, but there are times when I am chewing and I have this feeling like 'okay swallow that and it is coming back up.' I have had intermittent problems with keeping foods down, but have found a happy medium with the softest foods possible. No matter how soft i make the chicken - and I am talking slow cooked dark meat - I cant eat it. The only thing I can eat is groun…

  6. Started by Arthur Belly,

Hi everyone, I had my By Pass done on December 16th 2019 and for the first two weeks after the operation I lost 12 lbs in weight. Since then I have only lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks and I even make sure that I have (75g) 3 times a day 25g of protein shake that I make with half water and half milk in the glass totalling 200ml and I also drink plenty of water each day, and eat 1 or 2 low fat yogurts and a bowl of soup each day. I am in a wheelchair and I can’t exercise much due to a Stroke, but I try. So.... please if anyone might have an idea as to what it is I am doing wrong, I would be very grateful to hear from them as it is really starting to get me down now. I am no…

Hi, me again! I was wondering if anyone had any post-op anxiety. I just experienced it and have now idea how to control it. It doesn’t help that I’ve also been trying to google doctor myself with all the side effects of the surgery, so I’m also very paranoid.

  8. Wow feeling amazing woke up today another 2lbs gone finally hit my next major milestone. 130lbs gone officially. HW 322 SW 257 CW 192 GW 180/185 130lbs total gone in just under 5 months since I started this journey. With 65lbs since surgery 10/28 ? Going out today to pick up my brand new rowing machine ? Mike.

  9. Started by Panda333,

Just have to vent. I had my surgery on Oct 1, 2019. I weight 285 then. Today I only weigh 255. everyone on the board seems to lose 10 lbs a week and it's been almost 3 months I've only lost 30. In total since starting this journey I've lost is 52 which I should be happy. I was doing okay then when I went to the follow up the nurse practitioner said I need to eat more food and to eat 1000 calories a day. I'ts been hard but I've been forcing myself too. maybe that's whey i'm lot losing as fast. The funny thing was I was following "their" program which was getting me to 400 calories a day with the protein, and liquid diets. This is my biggest fear. I had the surgery, messed …

Hello, I just had my surgery yesterday 01/20, and was wondering if stomach cramps are normal? They really hurt, and all I’ve drank is water and sips of chicken broth.

  11. Started by kc892020,

Ok so I'm almost four days post-op and I'm still the same weight I was the day of surgery. This may sound like a dumb question, but when does the weight actually start coming off? I'm doing everything I'm instructed and given that I'm only on liquids it doesn't make any sense to me. As always, any help is appreciated!

Hey there how are we all? Almost one month already gone of 2020! Its been a tough week only managed to drop just 4 lbs; my slowest week yet I believe Well I've been doing a bit of fasting the past few days. As of today I'm now 194lbs ??? ============================== Should be picking up my new rowing machine this week and that should definitely help burn the fat off my belly area lol. Been buying new clothes and it feels great. I feel so happy and excited for the future and this surgery RNY BYPASS was the best choice ever!! Will be going to see my surgeon in a couple weeks for the 3 month post op checkup. Hopefully all my le…

If you were dehydrated how did you know you needed fluids? I’m 4 weeks post sleeve as of yesterday. I’ve felt like crap all afternoon. Dizzy, seeing spots off and on, and it’s weird to describe but it’s like my whole body is pulsating with each heart beat. Anyone else feel like this?

  15. Started by breavsg,

Just wanted to share this video, as I found it to be super interesting, along with most of this Doctor's other videos. I'm definitely not a Doctor, so don't take this as gospel, and please follow what your surgeon tells you! Warning: Some Profanity, so make sure your kids aren't nearby!! (He tells it straight) [/url] Edit: I forgot to add the most important part -- this is only regarding immediately post op up to around 6 months post, not forever. My apologies!

  16. Hello new friends! This is so exciting to feel such support and know that I'm not alone. I was just sleeved on 10/28 and have been having some issues - I was released on 10/31 and back in the hospital yesterday, 11/4. I feel like my body is completely shutting down. I had a really high heart rate when standing and walking and could not even brush my teeth without having to run to lay down. I have been getting my fluids (broth and water) but barely any protein because the shakes made me sick (I started on yogurt and liquid soups on Monday which has helped). They checked for blood clots and checked everything with my heart thinking that could be the cause of the s…

Hey Everyone! I am struggling to get my water ( lucky if I drink 750mls a day) and protein in because of timings. How long do you leave between your meals? I am trying to leave at least 10 minutes after drinking fluids before eating and at least 30 minutes after eating before drinking fluids again. But I am unsure when I can eat again? Also I feel like I am tolerating too much food. I am tolerating about 300grams. I am technically 5 weeks out although I was originally sleeved in 23 August 2019 then revised to bypass 5 weeks ago. Thank you in advance to anyone who offers their advice and guidance. X

Why can’t I have caffeinated coffee & tea? Is it just because it’s a diuretic? If that’s the case, well...I’m a lot more hydrated now, post surgery, than in my past. Between my wife and the timer on my phone every 15 minutes reminding me to drink.

  19. Started by KayLow42,

Hello! I am currently in my 5th week post gastric bypass. My question is when did you all eat a protein bar? What ones were you able to tolerate and taste good? I will Be traveling to Europe around week 11 and I want to bring something that I know I can eat.

Hello My Fellow Losers, I noticed about 2 weeks after my surgery that my hands are beginning to peel. It started with my thumb and has now worked its way across the entire inside of my right hand and has started on my left hand now. Has anyone else experienced this after surgery? I do plan to speak with my surgeon about it, and have already scheduled a dermatologist appointment, but I thought I'd reach out to see if anyone else had experienced this as well.

It’s not a big risk tbh but I need some greens in my life!! Tried spinach and it was horrible on my stomach two weeks back buttt today I’m risking it gonna try broccoli at 7 weeks hopefully it won’t kill me. Anyone else try it this early?

I am sorry to say that while this surgery has helped many, it has ruined 5 lives. My ex got this surgery without realizing that he probably had an underlying psychiatric issue which he medicated with food. After the surgery he never was relieved of pain. In fact, he almost died, even though the surgery was done in Princeton, New Jersey by an expert. He became septic because of a fistula. He lived through that. For 6 weeks after the surgery I had to stuff gauze inside the wound and change it twice a day. A nurse came to our house to change his IV. That was the summer of 2007. The entire month of July. The pain lasted more than 8 years. This pain and the lack of joy he Had …

Help me!!!!! Surgery date was 11/25/2019 and obviously I was hurting my first week or so but after that, I felt invincible. I had low sugar yogurt, I was happy, losing weight, eating mashed potato. I even made jokes if I had surgery at all because I was hungry most of the time. I am now almost 2 months out and I am so sensitive to food now, I am guessing it’s because I was safe in a bubble of soft foods and now I’m back to work. I had a piece of chicken with some queso (huge mistake, lots of fat in the queso) I was vomiting for 3 hours small amounts of queso (sorry for the nasty detail) next day I had to go to school and I don’t like eating in the morning but I had earl…

  25. In never had gerd or acid issues until after my sleeve in May of 2019. After 2 months I tried to stop the Omeprazole and I had the worst acid reflux in my throat. Burning pain that hurt a lot. I realized then that this surgery has made me dependent on that omeprazole and I am really upset. I read that long term use can damage the kidneys. I want off of these capsules but each time I try to stop, I get the reflux and burning in my esophagus. Right now I'm trying to use Papaya enzymes to curb the acid. I have gone 24 hours without the omeprazole but every few hours I start feeling the gurgling burn starting up my throat. So I hsve resorted to chewing 4 papaya pills at least…

I was sleeved 2/20/2019. Nearing the one year mark! Obviously the weight loss has slowed down but I'm curious if anyone is still losing this far out? I started at 273 on the day of surgery and have gotten down to 181 but have been here for a couple months.

Hey guys.. so what are your favorite unflavored protein powders and what do you mix them with?

  31. I'm feeling AMAZING. I've hit 198 as of yesterday so I decided to treat myself by going and buying some new clothes and some brand names even ? I managed to find the smallest size I could fit into and I was shocked. Thought I'd share my latest progress photo for everyone. I've come along way from 322-198 has taken me 4.5 months so far. Please be kind ? I know I've gotta start really working out soon so I'm picking up a rowing machine next week which that should help a lot with my stomach area.. I really hope I can get down to 180-185 Thankyouuu. MIKEY.

I can't believe it's already come and gone. When I woke up the pain was so bad I was starting to seriously regret going through this. I'm still in pain but its manageable. I feel like the first two weeks are going to be the toughest. Between all the timings of when and what to sip on and getting used to the supplements, etc. I just pray I can get through it.

I hit 6 months and just stopped losing weight. I haven't lost in 4 weeks and am starting to become frustrated and concerned. Anyone else experience this? How do you move past it? I have considered hiring a dietician, personal trainer, therapist and even going back to Weight Watchers (but do have a limited budget) Help please!

Hello everyone, I had gastric sleeve surgery on the 3rd July 2019, my starting weight was 120kg/265lb and is now 83.5kg/184lb which don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with but at 5ft1 my ‘goal weight’ is around 134lb which seems so far away and impossible for me right now. Since October I’ve only lost 7kg and for the past month or so it hasn’t moved at all, just the same lb up and down. Is this it for me? Has anyone experience it stopping this early? Thankyou x

I had the sleeve on Tuesday 1/7. When I wake up in the morning, I feel really good. Unfortunately, the minute I take a sip of anything, that's when the stomach cramps start up. Every single sip, my stomach cramps. Doesn't matter the temp or what im trying to drink. It makes it really difficult to try to get fluids in. Is this normal and how long should this last?

How soon did everyone start to have shrimp? I'm 6 weeks out and I have been having flaky fish and tuna with over steamed or over baked veggies. It settles fine with me. I was wondering what about shrimp though if it might be too heavy……I have a recipe that includes shrimp but I don't want to damage my sleeve or feel sick.

Surgery was 1/7 & now I'm 2 days post-op. The day after surgery was a bit rough- now, it's all about getting up & down. I have not figured out how to do that without excruciating pain in my right side of ab. I've tried videos, but still have not figured it out. Anyone else having this difficulty & how did you work around it? Thank you!

I am two weeks out from gastric bypass. All was going well but on Tuesday I woke up with some intense lower abdominal pain when attempting a BM. An hour and a half later and many solid BM later, the pain went away. I called my doctor and went back to liquids. My nutritionist thought I had eaten something my stomach didn’t agree with and the pain had subsided. Did liquids for 24 hours and all is back to normal. Fast forward to Friday morning, same thing is happening right now. Intense lower abdominal pain when having a BM. I do not think it was something I ate because the last time I ate was a protein shake 12 hours ago. My stomach is gurgling too. Anyone else hav…
