POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Krista22,

I’m just starting my 4th week post op, and it has been rough, but I’m now currently dealing with insane migraines for about a week straight now and have no idea how to handle them. I was released from the hospital last week after being treated for dehydration and lack of vitamins. I’ve kept up my liquid intake, have started eating soft proteins and kept up with my vitamins as well. Has anyone dealt with migraines like this before?

Hi all; I will be having my surgery on Feb 5th and I am nervous yet so anxiously excited. Would you all guide me to which topics I should read up on to get more information! Guess my biggest question that I wonder about is how soon will the weight start to come off? I'm on my pre op diet and have no issue following it; I've lost 6lbs in 4 days and my knees already thank me.

  3. Started by Sammi_Katt,

So, it's been an eventful month for me. I am one month post op from my sleeve- I was feeling great, doing great, and then at about two weeks in, everything kind of went splort. I was in and out of the er three times before I was admitted and had to stay for five days. The doctors there were unsure what was happening beyond me being extremely dehydrated (I went almost two weeks without eating ANYTHING and was having a hard time keeping more than 6-8oz of water down a day), and ran a slew of tests... My surgeon (the one who did my sleeve) eventually made them run another test that showed my gallbladder only performing at 15%. So if it weren't for her, I'd probably…

  4. Hello All, my surgery is scheduled for 01/28 and im nervous about the pain being that my tolerance for pain is very low and pain medicine don’t really work well unless its a strong medicine or i take more than recommend(which i think is due to my size). I’ve had my gallbladder removed and that pain was almost unbearable so the thought that this surgery could possibly be more painful scares me. What pain meds were you sent home with? How long were you in pain? I dont want to be bed ridden for more than a week due to pain I want to be able to be almost back to normal within 2-3 weeks.

  5. Started by martyravenx3,

I had my surgery 8/15/19 I lost weight rapidly i couldn’t keep food down even when i didn’t eat i was dry heaving. Eventually i had my gallbladder taken out thinking that it was part of the problem. At one point i passed out in my tub with my heart rate extremely high. I was so sick from puking my vitamins dropped and my thiamine was at a all time low to the point that i had vision, hearing issues, and dementia. I’m now in a wheelchair bc my legs gave out on me due to nerve damage and neuropathy. It’s really put me in a bad place. I cry almost every day, there’s not much i can do. I feel stuck, i feel like a burden, i wish i could just go back to normal.

Hey guys had a very slow week only lost 2.2lbs. But I am getting very close to the end of my weight loss journey. I started my diet before surgery; Today is 5 months and 1 week from start of my diet and 3 months 1 week since RNY surgery. Highest weight was 322lbs. Surgery weight was 257lbs Current weight 185.8lbs I've actually surpassed my dietitians goal but I'm not totally happy yet still got some stubborn fat on my lower stomach to lose so I'm going to try get to 180lbs I think ? I really need to start working out I think. BMI down from 43.6 to 25.1 so very close to healthy lol THANKS everyone for your support. …

I had my surgery 6 days ago and being on a more restrictive clear liquid than pre-surgery, I am starving. Nothing I drink is helping this feeling subside. Is there anything I can do? I thought about sucking on pieces of a saltine cracker.

  8. Started by ahillig,

Just had my 6 month post op labs drawn and the B12 came back with a >2000 level, max for the lab is 911. I've looked it up and it's either really benign or super serious. Some studies suggest it's impossible to store too much B12 others say it could be related to liver issues or certain cancers. Most studies recommend a follow up blood draw before drawing any serious conclusions but I'm just curious if others have had this problem and what came of it.

I will be 6 weeks out on Tuesday. The first 3 weeks I lost well (8.4; 3.8, 4.2). However, the last 3 weeks my loss has slowed down a LOT (.8, 1, and so far 0). Has anyone experienced anything like this and had their loss speed back up? I'm trying to keep a positive outlook but the longer the stall or slow down lasts the harder I am finding it. I see my surgeon and NUT on Monday and will be talking to them, but I'm just curious if this is the 3 week stall everyone talks about and if so, at about when it's normal for loss to pick back up. For reference, I was lucky to have a very easy recovery so I am getting 70+ grams of protein most days (always over 60). I…

So I’m past my one week post op. Was doing great and two nights ago I think I may have hurt something. I have been having severe localized pain in my lower tummy to the left of my bellybutton. Anyone else experience this? Called the dr office and they increased my muscle relaxer pills with Tylenol. Took the edge off, but I still feel the nasty stinging pain underneath.

  11. So I’m about a few days short of 3 months and I don’t know if it normal but I have been getting hungry more often. I still can’t take more then 3-4 ounce max of food and I never drink an hour before eating and an hour after idk the 30 mins after wasn’t working because I drank and felt like I over did it and would throw up so I stick to an hour after. But I’m hungry I eat my veggies and proteins and I have healthy snacks about twice in between and it still isn’t working. Maybe it’s my sleeping because I wake up around 9-10am and go to bed around late-ish. My nutritionist said it was very normal but I’m scared I might be end up gaining if she advances me to more then 700 ca…

Im just over a week post op and can eat nearly 2 cups of soup without feeling the need to stop. Im full but im just surprised that i can fit that much in and have the appetite for it. Anyone else feel the same so soon after surgery? Cheers

  13. I was watching a YouTube video with a weight loss surgeon, he said after surgery you cannot use soy protein powder, you have to use whey protein powder. Is this true for sleeve patients? I have a very favorite soy protein powder I love, and was hoping to use it post surgery.

5 years post op and I’ve been experiencing sores in my mouth and the roof of my mouth is dry and feels like it’s scratched. It doesn’t really hurt when I eat but concerned.

  15. I tried a bit of decaf coffee today and it was heaven. I also had a Greek yogurt this am and a teeny bit of unsweetened oatmeal less than 1/4 c dry. Everything went down fine. My one week post op is tomorrow. ?

I am writing a blog, and I would like to feature some before and after pictures from people of all different stats (starting weight, height, age, etc) and would like to know if anyone would like to be featured. I included some of my own before and after and have one person volunteer as tribute already, but would like to have more. I know that was one of the biggest things that I searched for when I was looking in to this surgery. The post can be found here... Please email before and after photos to coliveira77@hotmail.com and I will make sure to include yours! I welcome any comments on how I can improve my blog as well! Also, any topics you th…

Hello, this is my first post and I’m desperate for help. I’m 4 months almost 5 months post gastric bypass. I’m down 40 pounds. Only a few weeks ago did I notice I’m not feeling full like I was before. I thought it was just my body healing and I’d get back to my body limiting me on what I eat but it hasn’t. I realized that I picked up on drinking water while I ate and I’m just finding out that this is the BIGGEST no-no after surgery. I’m a water freak and just didn’t know how serious it was. Is there anyway I can go back to the way I felt (aka full) or did I ruin this for myself? I was going to go back on my liquid diet for the next week but I need to hear that I haven’t m…

I am at my goal weight of 175~180. I have to revise to RNY due to intractable GERD. Has anyone else reviewed at their goal weight? What I really want to know is how much weight loss should I expect. If you have revised, how many pounds did you lose. Thanks in advance for your answers!

  19. Started by Bunni3852,

I had the RNY on the 27th. I'm doing good with my fluid intake and don't feel hungry, but everything just sounds so good to me right now. Does that make sense? I go Monday for post op and pray I can move on to the stage 2 diet. Will I feel better once I can have something other than liquid. I'm so frustrated!

  20. Anyone else out there have permanent equipment in their body? Screws, rods, etc? I had bypass 1/27 and with preop diet and surgery I’ve lost 31# since Dec 26. This morning I woke up and the titanium rod I have in my back was sore- much like when I first got it. It’s been sore all day! I’m going to mention it at my 1 week check up Tues but I thought I’d ask here if anyone has had similar pain. It’s almost like it’s moved and scar tissue hasn’t formed around it ... anyway, just checking....

Yesterday I received a bill for my nutrition visits. Each at 118.00. I called the insurance first and they told me that they had used the wrong coding for it. They had it under treating hyper tension and not for weight loss surgery. I called the hospital billing and they are going to fix it. It is kind of frustrating, as I noticed that a lot of my surgery costs are still pending insurance at 4 months out!

Did anyone experience sore muscles (mainly leg and glutes) a few weeks after surgery? I'm super focused on hydration right now because I've been lacking the past few days, and now I'm thinking I'm low on protein and that may be the cause? Any ideas appreciated! (I'm taking my vitamins as well as Ferrex 150 mg and vitamin c 75 mg)

Not with cravings or anything but my stomach feels very heavy - heavier than usual. Did anyone else feel this after surgery? Will it eventually go away? Also sticking to my liquid diet is hard when I just don’t want to be bothered. Dehydration is a big problem with me. Before surgery I used to be In the hospital constantly for dehydration and I’m struggling now. Any recommendations on how to keep up? My last question is how weak and tired I feel. I just passed 7 weeks and honestly I feel like eating is a chore. There is no enjoyment in it anymore. I rather drink everything, but nut said I need to stay away from “slider” foods. So I try to eat at least twice a day now. Meat and eggs are just horrible to eat anymore. It’s Hard to describe, but it’s not enjoyable. Does anyone else have issues?

I’m almost at the end of my 2nd week of my pre-op diet. I started 12 days ago and weighed 333. After the first week, I was down 316. The last 5 days, I’ve gained 2 pounds. I don’t understand why this is happening. I’ve been very strict with it (no cheats) the last 5 days. All told, I’m only getting between 600-700 calories per day, and I’m averaging close to 10,000 steps per day. What am I doing wrong? How is this possible? Am I just retaining water? Has anyone else experienced this before? Thanks for any ideas you may have.

I’ had my surgery in 2013, I lost 50 lbs, within the first 3/4 months, I looked and felt great, that’s it, weight stalled and I never lost more that 8/9 lbs thereafter. I’ve tried, and I only go up and down between the 8/9 lbs. I look at myself now and realize, I’m still fat! What the heck? My mind played tricked on me, I thought I was smaller, lol .... yeah I look alright, I feel good but I can stand to loss 20/30 lbs but nothing works. I feel like I did this surgery for a mere 50lbs granted I wouldn’t have loss anything without it but I needed more. I still can’t eat a full meal in one sitting. Does milk mess with anyone after VSG? I use to be able to have milk but then I had to switch to Fairlife which is lactose free. I was fine after surgery with regular milk up until December I started to not feel well resulting in Sweating, feeling nauseous wanting to throw up and having to use the bathroom. Just wondering if this is normal.... reason for bringing it up is I got a coffee and forgot to ask with coconut milk instead of regular and now I’m having all those symptoms right before I have to be at work in 20mins.

Well I don’t know if it’s good or bad and will end up leading me back to bad habits but I go the entire week eating my 500-650 calories plus daily walking and then On like a Friday or Saturday I end up having a Reese thin just one little piece and like a hand full of skinny pop. I really don’t feel like it’s a bad thing I never have outside fast foods hence my stomach can’t handle the grease and I ended up with dumping. Which might I add if freaking annoying to last me two days. But I’m sure I’m not the only person who has a little bit of the sweets. Guilty

  35. I'm having my sleeve on Feb. 3, and of course I am nervous and trying to focus on the positive. I am realizing how much of our social life revolves around food! I am 61 and married. We are taking a lovely trip in June to Ireland and Amsterdam with another couple; We often meet up with folks for dinner/drinks; my husband and son love breweries, I am a pretty good cook and we have people over for dinner a lot. This super bowl Sunday is the first in forever that I am not going to a Super Bowl party with my ribs and/or chili. (To be fair, I am from Massachusetts, so this is not a great SB year for us....) Hello everyone. I had RNY gastric bypass on 12/2/19. Initially, I lost around 50 pounds in the first 5 weeks. During that time, I was only consuming 3-500 calories per day (just wasnt hungry). On my follow up visit with the surgeon, she expressed concern that I was not getting enough calories and wanted me to shoot for 1100 per day. I have done my best to increase my caloric intake but it has required me to eat higher calorie food in order to do so (not what I would consider to be diet food at all). I have been able to get up to an average of around 800-900 calories per day now. Since increasing my calories, I have nearly stopped losing weight. Over the last three…

Aside from awesome WL reactions, I keep getting the unexpected reply, "Did you get shorter?". At first I thought it was just a reaction to me being an overall smaller human (I was always a big guy, 6ft peaking @350lbs in DEC 2018 just before starting my WL journey), however, even folks I haven't seen in years are saying the same thing. I haven't checked with my Dr. yet but wanted to see if this is just a common reaction based on perspective or a real physical change. Still watching to see if a pattern emerges and trying to take it in stride (not always successfully). - No issues with liquids at all (yay!). I have been getting between 80 and 100 most days. - Eating up to 4 oz at a time. I haven't tried for more except with greek yogurt (I eat the whole container of the Oikos triple zero which is just over 5 oz). - On soft foods for the last 2 weeks and so far I've tolerated everything I've tried (eggs, Tuna, Ricotta bake, lunchmeat, etc...…

So I started the pureed foods stage today and I swear everything went to hell. I've been experiencing pain and burning after eating and can't seem to figure out why. I'm following the instructions on how to puree and am not eating anything with chunks. I'm taking my time between bites and am using my SWLC's (surgical weight loss center) recommended recipes in addition to waiting 30 min. before and after I eat before drinking water again. Is this normal? Is it because it's a new stage? I don't know. I just know today sucked big time. I left a voicemail with the SWLC. Has anyone else ever experienced this with the pureed stage?

Since day one I have been able to drink water just fine, take pills also...well it’s been 6 days and have tried to get as close as 64 oz of water a day as I could and I’ve been drinking some broth, and some sipping on protein shakes per my doctor she said main focus is water not protein but I am hungry! Is this normal? Yesterday I thought it was a mental thing but today I actually feel my empty stomach growling? Any one have any advise?

  43. I have two questions that are admittedly silly. Background: Had a RNY on 12/20/19. SW was 205, CW is 185, stalled for 2 weeks at 185. (I'm female, 46 yo). 1. How much protein should I be eating daily? I've asked my NUT this question, and she says I should be "doing my best" to get in protein, but that they don't give out goal numbers. How am I supposed to know what the number I should be reaching, if they won't tell me? I then asked my surgeon, and he advised me to speak with my NUT. This seems ridiculously silly, so I'll ask you all: How much protein should I be eating daily? I exercise moderately 3x/week and have a sedentary job, if that helps at all. …

  47. Hey, I am 5 months post op and within the last couple of weeks I am getting pains in my left shoulder- the same pain I had after my surgery. I have read that it is cause from eating to fast or much- I am being very careful to chew very well and slow- the pain starts with just a couple of bites and I know I am not full or satisified. For example this morning I had a quarter cup of egg whites done in the microwave and a tbs of salsa on the side, by my third bite I was in pain. I didnt have this issue before and I am starting to get a little freaked out as to why it would just start happening. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I know I'm only 4 days post op so this may be a little bit of a silly question but I thought I'd get some insight. Not going to lie it's been a pretty painful recovery so far. I'm just taking Tylenol as the Tramadol was giving me some weird side effects. Anyways, it's quite painful if I pull my shoulder blades back and stand up straight. If I'm hunched the pain really is non existent. The pain when I do this is on the right side, internally, feels like something is being stretched that shouldn't be. I'm assuming it's just muscle/organ healing etc. It's also quite painful…
