POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by MorganS,

I’m officially on post op day 7. Although very early on in my journey I’m staring to feel discouraged. I often have sharp but fast fading gas pain in my chest. It happens mostly when I drink any fluids. I’m trying my hardest to drink all my fluids but it’s been tough. I feel healthy and have already lost a good amount of weight! I’m just becoming worried it will be like this forever!?!

  2. Started by BecomingAnna,

Ive been crying and having mental breakdowns will this get easier. Im Almost 2 weeks Post op and NOT HUNGRY AT ALL so its hard to get fluids down Im barely Getting 30oz maybe less and its getting to the point where my lips and tongue are very dry When I was in the hospital my blood sugar kept dropping and I was feeling very jittery and Lightheaded so they were giving me this glucose gel stuff in a tube that i had to eat, i have been feeling lightheaded and jittery the past few days but how can i get my blood sugar up if everything has to be sugar free? Also now i know im dehydrated because everything is dry, my urine is darker than usual and im only urinated like once a d…

Four days post op and It’s killing me not to be able to pick up my five-month-old son. Now I’m starting to feel guilty and hoping the incision pain will end soon. How long did everyone’s incision pain last? Any words of wisdom?

  4. Started by skyewolfe,

I know this is silly, but I had my surgery March 2nd 2020, so almost a week ago. Since then I have not felt hungry at all. So my question is, if I don’t fee hungry, how can I know when I am full? There’s talk of me being able to start phase 3 Monday and I am afraid of making myself sick because I just can’t tell. Obviously I won’t eat/drink more than a portion, but how do I know if I’m full before I finish that portion?

  5. Started by MamaAsh,

Is that normal? To have a random sharp pain under my left boob / left side of my chest? I'm 2 weeks out and over the last few days I randomly get this pain. Sometimes when I eat and sometimes even when I'm just sipping fluids. Has anyone else felt this? I am so freaked out over leaks, could this be a sign? I don't have a temperature, so what is everyone's opinions? I'm gonna call my surgeon in the AM but was looking to see what you all think.

Hi all, I’m new here and only 1 day post op. I was excited to get home and step on the scale but I’m up 7 pounds! I also have my menses. Anyone else experience this?

Hello Everyone, I'm in terrible need of advice. I am one month and three days post-op, gastric bypass. I just got home from spending almost five days in the hospital due to gastrointestinal bleeding. Throughout my hospital stay, I kept asking myself why this would have happened when I was complient and followed all the post-op rules. Then, today when I got home, I think I figured it out. I was about to make my daily protein shakes (since the doctor told me to resume protein) when I noticed some interesting fine print on the canister: "contains 100mg of caffeine pet scoop." Oh. Holy. Crap. I had purchased this canister at the surgical weight loss cen…

  8. Had RNY done late October, and about a month ago I noticed that I was getting what I could best describe as a rash around my mouth. It's generally red, but doesn't itch. I will also get random white head type of pimples around the same area. I seem to get them throughout the day, including at work which is a little embarrassing. Severity seems to vary - some days are better than others. Anyone else have this issue? If so, were you able to resolve through medicine/diet/other? Thanks!

Does anybody do this 16:8 intermittent fasting? I've been doing it but I don't see why it would make a difference and I don't think it has with me.

  10. Started by berrybariatric1,

I have found one of the most challenging parts of adjusting to the surgery is not being able to Sri I liquids with a meal. It’s taking so much time and energy to figure out when I can eat and planning my liquid consumption around that. How long did it generally take for everyone after surgery to be able to drink more like a normal person? I know there will always b some delay but waiting 30 minutes to drink is so hard!

  11. Started by Girlwithadream,

Hi guys, so im doing pretty well after surgery. Im one month post op. Doctor let me eat solid food at 2 weeks out. All is cool i tolerate EVERYTHING. I don’t feel i had surgery ( of course small quantities remind me) So my birthday is up this weekend. What do u think about one tiny white wine glass? Reminder im one month post op. Thx for the help

  12. Not sure if this is strange or not but I suffer from chronic pain in my lower back and neck the last 3 years. When I woke up from my sleeve surgery last week the pain was gone. My doctor couldn't explain it. Still no pain a week out and haven't taken any pain meds since I left the hospital. I've read that your body can only handle so much trauma that it picks and chooses what to focus on. Dont know if that's true or not but feels nice after 3 long years even if its only temporary.

Hello everyone, I met a very sweet young lady the day of surgery at the hospital who was having the same surgery as me same day so we have kept in touch. Well she sniffs cocaine occasionally and is ready to start back we are a week out. What affects would that have on her new pouch. Would that cause problems for her. I’ve been Basically her support system and told her about this group and told her she should join to talk with more people in her situation but i wanna know what will happen if she does cocaine this early. Yes I told her she should seek help to stop which she is but she said shes young very healthy and only do it every now and then so she dont see hersel…

  15. Hey post op people...did any of you use a heating pad for incision pain or on your shoulders due to trapped gas? I'm walking and moving, trying to hydrate and resting. I need to alleviate some of the discomfort and pain...I also have gas relief pills that I want to take.

I'm a little over 3 weeks post op and lately I have been depressed and VERY GROUCHY. I have ZERO energy and all I want to do is sleep. I know it has to be a phase but I sure HOPE it gets over SOON. People that are not going through this don't understand at all. I actually had somebody at work ask me "why are you being such a B*tch lately". She KNOWS that I had surgery. Anyways, I've lost 34 pounds so I'm proud of that. I just needed to vent. Has anybody else experienced this??

  17. Started by KayLow42,

Let’s participate in Face to Face Friday! Here is one of me. Left is 60 lbs ago and right is today! I am two months out from gastric bypass.

  18. I am seriously worried what is going on with me. I am the peacemaker among all who know me. I had my sleeve on 4/24 and I am experiencing serious mood swings. I get very anxious and angry, especially at night. My family is scared of me.....like, literally! I thought it was the Oxy they prescribed for pain. I'd take a little at night to help me with the tenderness of tossing and turning. But I had nightmares so I didn't take it since two nights ago. Also, I feel stupid. I can't process a thought and can't complete a sentence at times. Anyone out there with same symptoms?!?!? Thanks for listening. :-/

I know you can’t really compare apples to oranges, but I’m wondering if any of you ladies have had both wls and a c-section? How do they compare? It’s my only big surgical experience to draw from so I’m just trying to understand what I’m in for come March 20th!

  20. Started by Slimmy-mommeee,

Hello I just received my surgery yesterday for the sleeve. Has anyone else experience when they drank water it hurt the top of their stomach. I keep getting spasms at the top of my stomach. I'm Nervous about going home if I'm unable to drink properly. I've been walking pretty often but the gas is still there. Also my incisions hurt and I tried not to take the oxycodone but the tylenol doesn't do anything. I was trying to complete the fluid intake amounts but think I overdid it bc now I cant drink anything without sharp pains. Any advice on what I can do or does this just pass on it's own?

new here. i’m about 5 weeks post-op and on soft foods. i’ve always been a semi fast eater. i’m having a hard time with the chewing and waiting for 20-30 seconds before doing another bite. were you able to eat normally again down the road?

  22. Started by Chas74,

Today makes 3 weeks since surgery. The first 2 weeks I lost 30 pounds and 2 more the next day but NOTHING since. I've been doing everything I am suppose to do and don't know why I have not lost anything in a week. I know I'm not going to always lose a pound everyday but a week with no loss is killing me! Any advice??

  23. Someone please give me some hope..... I can barely get any fluids in my body I have these constant spasms that caused me not to be able to even drink anything I feel like I’m becoming dehydrated and even more sick.... today I tried apple sauce and it nearly killed me........I’m thinking about going back to the hospital to get IV fluids so that I am able to maintain but can someone please give me some insight on if this is how it normally is and how long does this phase last

  24. Started by Sanela,

I had the sleeve 6 days ago (02/24). I’ve had elevated heart rate every day since. Ranging between 90-120 resting and 145 when Im up and around. My usual resting HR before surgery was occasionally elevated so I’m not sure if I should be concerned. I don’t have any shortness of breath but I do get easily fatigued when trying to walk around, this as well I guess could be due to the fact that I just had surgery. Anyone deal with something similar?

Generally, How long after surgery can you start pretty easy looking senior fitness classes at the gym?

VSG was one week ago. I’m struggling staying hydrated. I am imagining having to eat at some point and still managing to get a minimum of 65oz of fluid. Does it get easier to manage that? When?

Hey all, As of today, I am officially 1-week post-op but my doctor’s appt is not until Thursday. Until then I am on clear liquids and I came back to work today and was welcomed with a box of cookies! Not to mention somebody’s lunch smells reallly good! Any tips on how to make it through? Even after I see the doctor I’ll still be on protein shakes for an additional week!!!! I’m such a texture person and I miss chewing!!!!

I'm prepared to get responses that tell me I'm out of my mind, but I am having a gastric sleeve procedure one week from now and I turned 81 years old in January 2020. My rationale is that while I might not have many years left on this planet, I want to look as good as I can and feel as good as I can. Summer is coming and I mind the heat dreadfully. I'm looking forward to being more comfortable come the hot weather. Yes, I have air conditioning but I do go out the door sometimes. I'd love to hear from people in my age bracket who had undergone this surgery. I am in the Boston, Massachusetts area, and I am told by the weight center where I am being treated th…

Tuesday will be 3 weeks since surgery. I have lost 33 pounds. In the beginning I felt GREAT with lots of energy but towards the middle of the week I started feeling fatigued and very sleepy. I make sure I get my water and protein but I'm still on the full liquid phase so there's not much to choose from to eat. Any advice??

  30. Hello surgery twins We are officially 2 months out today so I thought I'd see how everyone is doing? Overall I'm doing well. Recovery was fairly simple and I've had no issues with any foods or getting in my protein/water. There are still lots of things I haven't tried (bread, pasta, rice, sweets, etc...) as I'm following the protein first recommendation from my team but within those guidelines all is well. I'm walking over a mile almost every day and am getting ready to join a local gym to add some weight training. My energy is still low so I'm hoping if I increase healthy carbs a bit this week I'll have the energy to do that. Weight loss is a little sl…

I messed up last night and ate chocolate. Im 5 weeks post op. It did make me feel sick after and i didnt finish it and threw it in the bin. I guess i just wanted to admit it publically so i dont feel so guilty. I dont want to eat high sugar foods like i used to, and want to nip this behaviour in the bud pronto. Anyone relate?

  34. Started by Lyssa1824,

I had the gastric sleeve Feb. 24 so I am 5 days post OP. I feel crappy. I feel hungry, am I suppose to? I tried the broth as much as I hate it and I couldn't do it. The cream of wheat they said I can eat made me throw up (never liked that either) so all I have really been able to eat it sugar free jello and sugar free fudgesiscles. I am not sure if there is other things I can eat at almost a week post op.. any suggestions??

Hi guys, new to this place, I just finished my surgery, Its been 8 days since surgery, I was 117.8kg (259lbs) before surgery and after 7 days I lost about 8.8kg (19lbs) but yesterday and today I started taking protein shake as the doctor advised me to do so and I am also adding thick liquids to my diet as I was told my dietitian and my doc, but since I started taking protein shakes, my weight loss has slowed down, like I was 109kg (240lbs) before starting protien shakes, and after it's been fluctuating for 2 days, today morning it was 108.5kg (239lbs) and after taking the shake in the morning and then checked my weight in the evening it was 109.2kg (240.7lbs), should I st…

Hello I’m 10 days post op and I feel great, my only complaint is I’m sooo sick of sweet drinks ect. Suggestions ?

  37. I had my surgery on Tuesday. Day one was ok, day two - terrible, TERRIBLE nausea. Threw up 3 times. Finally got home and threw up some more. Called my doctor and they said to come into the ER. I told them I didn't want to be admitted and wanted to wait it out. Now my temp has been hovering in the low 99s. Today, I got a wave of nausea over me. I have phenergan suppositories which usually work wonders, but this nausea is not going away. Slowly sipping on Gatorade zero and water. Took my temp and it's 100.0 - not sure what's going on or if I should just go back to the hospital. I know I'm kinda asking for medical advice, but mostly just seeing if you guys experi…

Hey guys hope all is well. Now I've just hit the 6 months mark since I started my weight loss journey. It's been an amazing ride that's for sure. I started my highest weight of 322lbs. Today I'm 178lbs; that's a 154lbs GONE in 6 months! Surgery weight was 257lbs so I'm 4 months post surgery as well; 79lbs since surgery day I never thought I would even get to this weight and now I feel great. bought some new clothes and noticed some girls actually taking notice of me these days it's a great feeling!! I have been eating more and trying out different foods lately and I can tolerate more these days; actually went out for lunch the othe…

So I had RNY a week and a day ago. I just started on the full liquid stage yesterday. I've been telling my husband that I want some kind of creamy soup. Well, the church I go to, if someone has surgery, there is a group or committee that will cook meals and bring to the family. Well today, this nice lady brought over some creamy tortellini soup with sausage. I'm soooo drooling and wanting some (of course just the soup part, strained and all that) but I'm worried about what might have been added. Would there be too much fat added? What kind of milk or cream was added? I don't know the lady very well to straight up ask her. Would you have some or should I leave i…

Anyone else not have a goal weight? Sometimes I'll be like oh 150 would be nice, but honestly at this point I just want to be less than 180 like I was when I thought I was fat ? Little did I know how fat I was gonna get ?

  43. Binge eating is the reason I got to my highest weight of 315.4lbs, and it was all emotional. I ate because it was what made me feel better no matter what- I was mad, I ate. Sad? Food. Bored? Food. Even happy, you celebrated with food. Now that I've had VSG... I have no binge eating. My head is trying to convince me, but I have been journaling and going to therapy to help with that. It's helping, but it's feeling like it's not enough. I am hanging in there the best I can- I am practicing calligraphy, cross stitching, knitting, going for long walks (can't exercise fully yet), playing video games, etc., but I'm still coming up with the head thoughts of "YOU NEED TO EAT …

Good day everyone! I am preparing for surgery sometime in May. I was wondering how people have hid there bat wing arms after loosing weight. Do you all have anything like compression shirts or anything and who sells them I may need them and it’s probably going to be the one thing that stresses me out. Any and all info would be appreciated!

  45. Started by Katheryn0303,

Just curious how much time everyone was out of work and truly unable to work after surgery? I know everyone is different just curious what people have experienced. Surgery is in 6 days! Eek. Planning on taking 2 weeks off and then easing back into it.

  46. Started by MarvelGirl25,

Hi everyone! So I'm not sure whats going on but for the past few weeks I haven't been hungry. Some would say that's great because its preventing me from over eating but the reality is I've been under eating. I've lost my appetite completely and I've been getting in 200-350 calories a day. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'll have a few bites of my food then I'm done for the day and I don't want anything else. Yesterday and Sunday I had to force myself to eat something even though I really didn't want to and if I didn't force myself, I would have ended the day with 224 calories and 15 g of protein. I've been trying to eat foods higher in calories so that my ma…

  47. I do not know where to start. My immediate family (Husband, tweens) support me verbally, but they continue to eat lots of processed food, fast food, etc. I’ve asked that they keep that stuff in the pantry, but the request is ignored. (He actually brought home a case of Girl Scout cookies tonight!). I can ignore the take-out and fast food for myself, but I get really depressed when I make something I can eat for the whole family they take a few bites (like slightly seasoned taco meat) and head for the bag of chips. I knew this was going to be an issue before surgery, but I brushed off how hard it would become mentally since I’m struggling to find a good eating pattern …

  48. I am considering the sleeve. But it's important to me that my 11 year old does not know. I'm not wanting to debate my reasons on why I'd rather keep it a secret from her but it has me thinking about privacy. Do you keep it a secret? How? Is it possible? Obviously it's no one's business but my own. I will have my husband's support. But for those who have managed to keep it quiet from loved ones... how have you made that work? What might keep me from being able to do so? Thank you!!

  49. Started by Puffy-no-more,

Hey so I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. Before my surgery, my surgeon told me the incision on my left side would be the most sore. It definitely is but I'm starting to wonder if there is more to it. My surgery was a week ago tomorrow. I have been off of all pain meds for several days now. Since that time, that incision has been more sore and swollen than all of the others. But starting this morning, I started having a stabbing pain in it almost anytime I moved that is very strong. That has since changed to a very strong burning pain even when I just move my left leg. The incision site looks fine. No redness or drainage or anything but I'm starting to wo…

Sooooo... I normally have fairly dry skin, but ever since surgery, it's been ridiculous! I have to smother myself in lotion like three times a day now (I use gold bond eczema cream), but I will have scaly skin again after like... an hour. Is this normal? I take biotin with my multivitamin. If it is normal, how long does it last? Or does it never go away?
