POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Hello there hope everyone is feeling well and getting ready to return back to normalcy after covid-19. Here in Australia things are starting to get back to normal with opening more businesses and stuff. It's my monthly check in for those that are interested in my journey. I count from the day I began my diet and my new way of life which is 9 months to the day but my surgery was 7 months ago. Everyday I wake up and I'm amazed how far I've come this year. I look in the mirror and I still can't believe how good I look now after losing all the weight. I spent half my life obese most of all my adulthood actually and I was always known as the fat friend…

I'm one week post op and feeling good and off all pain meds and finally pooped. 10 pounds down and I feel like I'm onto the next level. My question is what are people keeping track of and how are they doing that? Are you counting calories, measuring food, water, protein, and/or fitness? Is there an app you like best to do all this?

  3. Started by ChubRub,

Today marks 6 months Post Op!! I'm thrilled with the progress so far, and look forward to continuing my journey. I'm down 71lbs so far. I need to lose 19 more to get to a "normal" BMI, but would ultimately like to lose another 10 after that, to get down to 130. My before pictures are from my sister's bridal shower and wedding, the only time I let someone actually take my picture. I hated being the "fat bridesmaid" though! Please forgive the tight clothes in my "after" picture, but I wanted to wear something that would really show off the the progress I've made. Someday I hope to be confident to wear tight clothes like that out in public, but not yet! LOL!!

  4. Hello. I am concerned about the limits I need to place on myself during recovery. My daughter is pregnant and I am supposed to throw her a baby shower about three months after I have the gastric bypass. Am I out of my mind? Should I have someone else do the baby shower? I’m happy to pay for everything I just fear I won’t have the stamina to carry out the duties of baby shower hostess. Any suggestions?

"5 more days.." is the phrase I've been telling myself on repeat for a few hours now.. I swear my whole neighborhood is making BBQ today! It smells so good. I am ready for some real food!! ?

Surgery date: 05 June 2020 Starting Weight: 199 LBS Current: 184 LBS Gender: F Hey all, I just have a question regarding weight loss after post op. I'm wondering if you guys hit a plateau really fast? I just barely had my surgery and I've now been stuck at 184 the last week. It has me really frustrated and sad because I'm still in the liquid phase and should be losing more. I can only think the issue is my liquids. I've noticed that I don't have to urinate but maybe 3 times a day. And it just feels like my body is holding onto the water. I drink about 3000 ml a day so far but even when I drink more it doesn't seem to help? Anyone have this issue of bei…

My brother just had the gastric sleeve and called me from the hospital. He is in a lot of pain and said he regrets he did this because he can't keep even water down. I feel really bad about this and just want to know if this common to feel this way and what I can do to support him through this. Thank you

  8. Started by Ilanarose,

Any advice on how to take your post op medications? I need to take pantropazole and ursodioland I have to crush them up. It tastes disgusting. I’m only a few days at op so I have to crush them... and recommendations on how to make it more bearable? What to take it with?

  9. Just kidding. Not available in humans yet. Researchers experimented with mice. They had baby mice born in "bubble" and these mice had virtually no bacteria (good or bad) in microbiome (gut). No matter how much they ate, they were unable to gain any weight. They also had mice where the hormone leptein was blocked. Leptein is what tells your brain you have satiety and quit eating. These mice without leptein available ate nonstop and became extremely obese. Third group were totally normal mice, eating appropriately and maintaining normal weight. First experiment, they took fecal material from normal mice and transplanted to mice unable to gain weight. The skinny mice now h…

ive always had a dream of skydiving but i was always too heavy. You have to be 250 to be able to do it. This was my first goal and this morning i hit it. I should be taking the jump within the next few weeks. i cant wait!!!

  11. Started by Mac the Knife,

I'm 3 1/2 years removed from a second round of weight loss surgery - a duodenal switch which replaced a malpractice-level LapBand installation. As I write this it has proven, from a weight loss and physical health perspective, to be miraculous: having once tipped the scales at 360 pounds, I now range between 185 and 190. While I went into the "weight loss journey" with no specific weight target in mind? If I were to have had one I've long surpassed it, and for that I am grateful. But in the years that have followed new issues have emerged, and I'm writing to see who among folks here has experienced something similar - and what they've done to address them. S…

I'm 4 days post-op sleeve and feel nauseous a lot. I'm guessing it's the pain meds so might switch to just Tylenol. Plus I haven't pooped yet. Any suggestions?

I had the sleeve 5/18/20 and I am returning to work tomorrow. I also am starting my soft solids tomorrow and am wanting to meal prep and need lunch ideas. Do y’all have any suggestions!?

In Hospital still just had surgery today, all went well. Great Experience so far?

  15. Started by over65,

Had first puree yesterday. Canned tuna with a little lite mayo and whipped it up food processor. Went down easy without any issues but definitely felt the restriction for first time. Plan to try egg salad, sardines, canned chicken, and avocado instead of mayo and ricotto bake. Will continue with protein shakes to get in all my protein. After weeks just liquids, this will be great change.

Hey all. I'm new to BariatricPal and am hoping to draw on everyone's experiences and advice :-) I'm three years post sleeve and have been plateaued at the same weight for two of those years. I was enjoying the weight/wardrobe stability too much to do anything about it, but now things need to be addressed as the regain has started. Starting weight 275 Surgery weight 259 Current weight 193 Lowest 189 Goal 150 I know it doesnt seem like much, but I've been up as high as 197, which is WELL beyond the normal flux. I signed up for weight watchers but it's simply not doing anything for me! I've been following the plan really well 90% of the time. I started a pouch reset plan …

This week marks 1 year post op and I am down 112lbs and holding pretty steady. I lost 100lbs the first 6 months and it was too easy. I knew it would not go on forever like that and to enjoy it while it lasted. The past 6 months things have been much more of a grind. Im still not at goal weight but I am happier with myself. To be completely honest I did this without any regular exercise, im not proud of this but I think its important. I know I would be at the goal weight if I were exercising. I removed all obstacles that I thought were in the way but Im still not doing it. Weight loss chart below to give everyone an idea what the rate of loss looks like. I think …

Hey everyone! I will be 1 year post op July 18th and right now i'm kind of lost. I'm down 101 pounds so i'm very happy about that. ? I just need the motivation to exercise and be motivated. I feel like i'm at a stand still and my next goal is 30 more pounds. What gives you motivation to work out and just all around motivation? Also how much do you eat? My surgeon said i need to measure everything i eat still. I just serve a little bit and if i dont finish the food i throw it away..

I had my surgery in September 2019 and I was wondering if anyone else constantly felt drained or like they've had a mass loss of energy? I've been taking my vitamins and those are supposed to help but they don't seem to be doing much. I keep finding myself losing focus, not being able to do things for a long time, getting dizzy or lightheaded, and feeling really unenthusiastic about things I used to be passionate about. Did anyone else feel like this for so long after their surgery?

  21. Hello All, I need your help/advice, I had my gastric bypass completed back on Oct 2018 and still continue to feel weak. I'm currently taking the Optisource, post bariatric surgery vitamins and my labs come out just fine but I continue to feel weak and always feel tired. Another of my medical conditions is depression which I've been experiencing for years since before my surgery. I was able to meet my weight loss goal but when walking I feel as I if I don't have the strength to support my body weight. At this point I don't know if this lack of strength is due to my depression or a consequence of the weight loss surgery. If anyone has information they can sha…

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is doing great . I wanted to come here and share an update with you all. I had VSG in December and I’m so glad I did. Best decision ever! As of today I have lost 67 pounds and I’m am officially a healthy BMI! I can’t believe my clothes are a size small and extra small. I used to wear 2x! I am so happy. So much hard work and dedication goes in to this. This is def not the easy way out. A lot of sweat and tears to reach my goal. I workout every day. I purchased a bowflex since the gyms have been closed for a while now. I no longer eat meat, that was a huge change for me. Suddenly my stomach can’t handle meat at all. So I’m a pescatarian now…

Thank you all and hope everyone is doing well!! Xox

  25. Hello there Mike here I finally got my scales in the mail from Amazon. New fancy Bluetooth RENPHO scales and the first time I've ever seen these kinds of results and measurements before. Would like to know what people think or if there are any medical people here who can explain things??? Much appreciated. This is my lowest weight yet.

  26. Hello all: I underwent a gastric sleeve on February 26, 2020. I was told that this type of surgery can cause hair loss. .... but we hear what we want to hear. I'm losing my hair at an alarming rate. Anyone else experiencing this? In addition to that problem, my weight loss is at a crawl. Since February 26 I've lost only 16 pounds.... so now I won't just be fat, - I'll be fat and bald. Any input would be much appreciated. Best, Grace

  27. Started by Puffy-no-more,

Hey everyone. So I’m really starting to think maybe this is appendicitis.....? But I wanted to ask on here and see if anyone had any other thoughts. Since Monday, I keep having this stabbing type pain in my lower right abdominal area. It only last for about 7-10 seconds and then it goes away but it just keeps getting stronger and more frequent. I can’t figure out any correlation between the pain and when I eat or what I eat so I just don’t know. I’m 3 months out from gastric bypass and up till now doing great. Any possible ideas of what this could be?

I came home from hospital yesterday morning less than 24 hours since surgery. The remainder of the day was not good. Pain and gas. Felt like I was kicked in belly by a horse. Gas was mostly in belly and just felt like a tight balloon. I was given Rx for chewable simethecone (GasX). I finally started big rumbling farts. Used a heating pad which helped alot. I got in my Water but very little Protein. Had a great night's sleep. This morning feeling much better with a lot less gas pain. Having broth with unflavored Protein Powder (tastes like cream of chicken soup) and very soothing. Tried Jello at the hospital and it was sickening sweet. Couldn't eat it. I prepared…

  30. Hi everyone, I had my surgery 2/18. I went for blood work 5/9 and was shocked to find out my cholesterol jumped from 130 to 190. I’ve lost about 40 pounds between blood tests. My B1 is non-existent so I will need to take Lipitor and a thiamine supplement. Just wondering if this has happened to others and if this will improve. Thanks!

  31. Hey ya'll, my big day is coming on Monday! I am flying to Las Vegas from Montana to do my surgery, a 2 hour direct flight, but I am concerned with when I will be able to come home. Right now I am scheduled to fly back 10 days after surgery, but I would like to make it sooner if possible. I know there are follow-up appointments and such, but I am doing all of that in Montana. The biggest challenge is getting from the Uber car to my airplane seat. I am not sure how long that walk through the airport will be, but how soon will it be doable do you think? I am getting the bypass by the way, which can be a more challenging recovery compared to the sleeve, from what I understand…

  32. I had my surgery May 20, 2020, everything has  been smooth sailing until last night around 2am, I woke up to incredible shoulder pains that just will not go away with Tylenol. Ever thing else is fine. No fever, no tummy pain, nothing. Just this awful shoulder pain. Anyone else’s have this issue?

  33. Started by over65,

I had VSG three days ago. The big surprise was my doctor told me to quit taking 2 of my blood pressure meds and my statin on discharge instructions. Thrilled about that. Am taking my BP regularly to be sure it doesn't get high again. So already reaping benefits from my weight loss presurgery.

  34. Hi Those In The Know. I'm making a Thai broth I really like and have added some gen-pro unflavored powder to it. Anyone know if you freeze it and then re-heat it later in the microwave if it's a palatable consistency? Thanks!!

I bought GELATEIN20 on Amazon for my clear stage. You get 20g protein in little 4 oz Jello cup. Really helps meet protein goals. Fruit Punch taste a little like kids couvh syrup but it isn't too sweet and easy for me to eat. I have yet to find anything that makes me nauseous so may be different for others.

Hey everyone. I hope that y’all are doing good. So the other day, my little girl came to give me a hug. I was standing at the time and all of a sudden she got really excited and said “mommy, I can put my arms all the way around you now”!!!! It might be dumb to some but it made me so happy and I had to hide my tears from her! Also, tonight!!!! I took a very comfortable bath for the first time in a very looonnnng time! Before, I couldn’t even sit comfortably in the tub.

  38. I am 4 days post-op. For starters, I apparently had a large hiatal hernia that they repaired and it is causing dull middle chest pain sometimes when I swallow, that sometimes radiates to the center back. It is a weird feeling that stops me in my tracks. In my research the swelling of the esophageal-stomach junction area repaired can cause discomfort when swallowing for as long as 6-8 weeks after surgery. Has anyone experienced this? Separately, my stomach seems to hate everything I try to put into it. I can really only COMFORTABLY ingest Water, Protein water, Jello, and broth...even Protein Shakes are causing discomfort. By Day 4, I would’ve expected to tolerate more…

  39. Let me start out by saying that I know this is a really trivial concern. I have a friend in quarantine after a potential exposure at work, and a friend of a friend in the hospital on a ventilator. But darn it, it's still driving me crazy that I'm home in self-isolation (after returning from travel for my surgery) without a scale. I haven't weighed once since my surgery. I don't have/didn't buy a scale on purpose - for long term weightloss, having a scale in the house is a really bad idea for me. I get obsessed, and then after a few months I get mentally exhausted. I need to adjust to a new lifestyle where I don't think about food all the time, and personal…

Surgery was yesterday. I slept most of the day yesterday. Between the pain and the grogginess, I have struggled trying to get anything down. It takes me 5 minutes to drink a1 ounce. My throat is sore from the tube. Just needed to vent.

  42. Started by PepperCat,

I can’t stop trying to find answers. I have experienced migraines for years, but approximately two years after my sleeve surgery I began experiencing intractable migraines and headaches. I have been seeking treatment for years, am in numerous meds, and get botox therapy... and it’s still a struggle. I recently had revision to RNY... but honestly these migraines started initially two years post op my sleeve. Has anyone else had this? They’ve greatly impacted my quality of life.

  43. Started by pssk,

I’m doing quite well. I was 222 on October 1 and I was 167.5 today. My goal was to hit 155 that I now feel confident that I will hit. So 54.5 lbs down. I am 5’6” and now I have a BMI of 27. I started with a BMI of 35. I may lower the goal when I get there but I’m not sure how that will look at 55 years old. I feel so much better than I did in July at my first appointment. I was 228 then so technically I am down 61 since the summer. How are YOU doing?

  44. So me and hubby are wanting bring another baby into our lives. Has anyone ever had a successful tubal reversal done after having them tied for 4 years? If so how much did it cost?

  45. Hi Gang. Can the Bypassers weigh in? I'm scheduled for a Bypass on June 29th and just had my last visit with my surgeon who told me he would be doing a 100cm bypass. Does this seem short? My concerns regarding the Bypass were the malabsorption and dumping. I know some people value these to help them stay on track but I do not so I thought the sleeve would be best. But I suffer from reflux and have since I was a kid so Bypass was recommended. I believe my concerns about Bypass are why my surgeon chose this "100 cm size". However, from my research most people do twice as much. Thoughts on the pros and cons? Would love to hear from other 100 cm Bypassers. Thank…

I had gastric sleeve 5/18/2020 my weight loss has been pretty good. About 2 lbs per day. My total loss since surgery is 16 lbs. I have been struggling with getting my fluids down and I’m noticing that my pulse is running high, especially in the evenings. My pulse is usually in 70s and right now it’s bouncing between 100-110. Could this be from dehydration? The only weird thing is I notice it more at night... I’m currently trying to sip and get some water down.

Hello everyone, I honestly never do this but I'm beyond desperate and need to see if anyone has in the past or is experiencing what I am. I had gastric sleeve done end of Oct of 2018 and on 2019 I had revision done to bypass. I have suffered from GERD since I was 16 and I am now 44. The reason I mention this is because I had revision done supposedly because my GERD was causing extreme burning sensations im my throat and mouth. Well here it is 7 months after my revision and the sensations and feelings I had are back again at full force and even worse. I honestly do not know of this is even GERD at this point anymore. I am going to try to explain exactly what it is I f…

  48. Hello there I just want your opinion. I've been trying to maintain my weight now for a few weeks and I've been slowly adding more calories into my day but I still seem to be staying at a low weight even went down a pound this week. Plus I wanted to show people how my body looks after losing a RECORD 157LBS. I was my highest weight at the surgeons office of 322Lb and just today I weighed in at 165lbs. I know I need to figure out how to gain some muscle and tone up some areas I'm not sure if I'm underweight but my BMI is 22.. I had gastric sleeve on Monday and I am struggling the last few days. I am feeling regret, like I miss my life before where I could do whatever I wanted. I know this is childish because obviously I sought this out for a reason, but I am finding myself in tears every few hours. I know that many people in the world have far more to worry about than me and me missing my previous life, but this is where I am at. I miss food already. I have already been hungry. Ever since my surgery I have been able to take good sized sips and have gotten my water and protein in. Is this crazy to just miss food, and comfort foods at that? 50. Hi Gang. I'm trying to decide between two surgeons. Each have pros and cons. One requires me to do 1 week pre-op liquid. The other said no need. I'm trying to decide whether this is a pro or a con. If you DIDN'T do a liquid diet can you describe your pre-op diet for me? Really appreciate it!
