POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Jenna_87,

Has anyone had a long weightloss stall? I'm talking months. It's been since January since I've lost any weight. Idk doesn't seem normal to me. I'm 6 months out and i thought i was still in the honeymoon phase.

  2. Started by New&Improved,

Hope all is well and everyone living life in isolation. I want to say happy Easter. I'm still maintaining around 170lbs. Decided for Easter I'll take one day off and have some chocolate. I think I've earnt a little break.

  3. Started by jbeesauntie,

Hi all, I am 6 weeks post op and I am having a really hard time with breakfast. Per my surgeons guidelines, he recommends avoiding bacon, sausage (even chicken), ham etc. but my issue is that I hate eggs! So I am tired of having protein shakes and yogurt for breakfast. I also don’t want to eat chicken or seafood every morning. I’ve had some bacon and I’m wondering if I am “cheating” and messing myself up. I hit a stall at 3 weeks, had my menstrual, and went up! It finally broke last week and I lost what I gained but it just doesn’t feel like I’ve made any progress in weeks! I’ve lost 22 pounds since surgery on 2/24 and with my 2 months coming up I feel like I shoul…

Hello everyone what a ride it has been. I spent a year researching bariatric surgery before choosing RNY BYPASS. my highest weight was 322lbs and I was very unhealthy and probably heading for an early grave. With a BMI of 43.7 now today after 7.5 months I've managed to hit 170LBS. that's a total loss of 152lbs in 7.5 months and I think I'm done and in maintenance mode. I've started adding more variety and carbs into my diet but still being mindful of my Weight. I'm just so grateful for the bypass it has completely and literally changed my metabolism for the better. Lately I have indulged here and there on a few squares of chocolate …

  5. Hi, I'm kind of worried awake at 4:30 because my upper body (chest and back area) are very achy. It almost feels like I have a fever, but I don't. I get chills and very achy when I have a fever. And no, I'm not coughing or sneezing or sore throat so I'm almost positive it's not coronavirus. Has anyone ever felt like this? I've been reading and I just don't know what the problem is. I can drink, but I hate the protein shakes. UGH!! I don't feel good. Yesterday I went back to just protein shakes and water because I thought I wasn't ready for cottage cheese and applesauce. Please help

I tried the Ricotta cheese bake and now I’m so freaking sick! I bought two tubs of ricotta cheese because I was so excited to try it and I loved Ricotta before surgery. What a waste! This is a learning experience. I feel like I’m having the dumping syndrome again. So apparently anything with milk is going to mess with me right now. Thank God I’m at home when trying it out. It smelled so good at first and now I’m nauseous from smelling it in the kitchen. This really blows.

  7. Started by Lynda486,

I really wanted to be at 150 by today, but missed my goal by 11 pounds. I am really happy with my progress though.

  8. Started by Puffy-no-more,

Hey everyone. I had the gastric bypass 7 weeks ago today. I have a question about fats. I have been told by my surgeons office that foods high in fat and sugar will make me sick, cause dumping syndrome, blah blah blah. However, they tell me I can have a tablespoon of peanut butter. High fat, right? And there are other foods I have questioned on their list that to me would be high fat. So my question is, what is the bad fat that I need to be looking for? Is there a difference in how my body will react to it? Obviously greasy foods are not even in the picture. I get that that is bad fat but I'm talking things like nuts, etc. Thank you for any insight.

  9. Started by ChubRub,

I officially weigh less than my husband!!! 177!!!! Woo Hoo!!! It's the little things!!! LOL!!!!

  10. My bypass was done in December but I still can't eat much. I basically eat hummus, yogurt and cottage cheese because they are the only things I can keep down. I have pain when swallowing liquids or eating certain foods. I know with the first couple bites if I am going to tolerate a food item and most times I just give up and go without. I throw up at least 3 days a week and usually continue to throw up for hours.. long after my stomach is empty. Anyone else experience this? I had to cancel an appointment with my surgeon due to covid19 concerns ( I am immunosuppressed due to lupus. )

  11. Started by MzzDani,

I am almost a year from anniversary date of gastric bypass. Woot woot! But my knees are now killing me. Before the surgery I had issues with my knees and had anthroscopic surgery on the right one. However, now both my knees hurt so bad that climbing stairs or sitting low has become a huge pain. Could it be muscle loss and now too much weight is bearing down? I’m just at a lost. Anybody else experiencing this??

  12. Started by Ev2020,

Good afternoon everyone, I had my surgery on 3/11/20 and been with sharp pain on incession on the right where stomach was taken out. How long will it take for pain to leave. Anyone please??

  13. Started by JSSteinman,

Hi everyone. I’m 8 weeks post gastric sleeve. As per surgeons orders, I started solid food (that isn’t puréed) 2 weeks ago and I’m just wondering how slow to eat? Everywhere says eat slowly like taking 30mins to eat a meal but somewhere I read to have a bite every 5 mins. Is this right? I’m just worried I eat too quickly sometimes and it’s hard differentiating pain from eating too quick and not tolerating the food or being full.

  14. Anyone else scared of doing soft food because it will be more calories? I am, I have stayed the same weight for the past 10days, Only taking in 500 calories. My protein is around 75g. 80oz of water ea day. I log everything I eat, its the same everyday and i exercise everyday with a 2-3mi walk. But the scale wont budge. Tuesday is when i am supposed to start soft foods. I'm scared I will start gaining. Any advice?

  15. Please help me! My husband had Gastric bypass 1 year ago and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 3 months post (no history of psych issues), now he doesn’t want to take meds and now is experiencing paranoid delusions directed at me that I am bugging our house, wire tapping him, installing cameras, etc. I did not do those things and do not even have the skill set to make any of that possible. Are psychological issues a thing with this procedure? Has anyone experienced anything like this? His family is saying we should just divorce, I don’t want that, I want my husband back!! Any insight would be helpful ....

Hi there! I’m 3 months into my surgery and since 2 months i haven’t really felt like myself, the first month of Gastric Sleeve was perfect no pain no nausea no vomiting no discomfort, but right after that 1 month mark passed everything went downhill, i have no appetite I’m always nauseous to the point where i vomit for relief, food portion wise I’m eating like a 4 month old, I’ve consulted my doctor and he proscribed meds. Took the dosage and term of meds and still nothing, was suppose to do a endoscopy can’t due to covid-19 situation, so I’m wondering is there anyone else out there who’s experienced this, I’ve asked my buddies if they’ve felt this and 15/15 said no, my s…

  17. I’ve been on LOA since my surgery date of 3/3/20. I’ve asked my surgeon to extend my absence as long as I can and I go back to work tomorrow morning. I work at one of those megabanks where people like me - not in the upper echelon - don’t get to work from home. I’m considered one of those essential workers that must report to work regardless. I’m scared. From what I’ve heard moral is super low at my office due to those of us that are forced to go into work. I live with my family and that includes my 74 year old mother who has diabetes, my brother and his wife and their kids—my niece and nephew—who are 6 and 4 respectively. Hello all: I had a bad experience night before last and all day yesterday. After my evening dinner on Sunday I was very uncomfortable. My stomach was actually distended and felt like a hard rock. I thought it would just go away but it persisted into Monday morning and afternoon. This was so uncomfortable in that if I sat up I could feel my stomach protruding. I was somewhat worried and spoke with my doctor. That did me no good except it allayed a lot of fear that something really serious was going on. Finally I thought of taking some Gas-X (Simethicone) 125 mgs (2 capsules). It did not clear it up completely but it helped a GREAT DEAL. You can take two (2) c…

  22. Started by Puffy-no-more,

Hello everyone. I hope that everyone is doing ok during this time. So I am almost 6 weeks post op RNY. Before surgery, the main thing I drank was soda. Other than that, I would make sweet tea. Like extremely sweet tea. Like 2 + cups of sugar per gallon of sweet tea. Same thing with koolaid. fast forward to now. Of course all of those things are completely off limits and honestly I’m not even sad about this. I decided to make a change and my drinks was one of the biggest parts of the change that I new I had to make. My question is that I am getting a little bored with just the water, crystal lite, and Gatorade zero. I have never in my life used any kind of artificial…

Hi there - Quick question. How long did you keep visiting your surgeon post op? I love my surgeon so I’m happy to stay with her as long as she’ll have me lol. Due to coronavirus my upcoming 6 month post op appt was rescheduled. I was going to ask then, because when my mom asked me this question I realized I didn’t really have an answer. Just curious what everyone else’s experience has been.

I am almost 3 months post RNY (Tuesday will be the official 3 month day). Today I am feeling really good about where I am. I am down 41.8 lbs since surgery (83.4 since starting). In addition I have a few great NSVs: Lost over 25" total (including 5" off my waist and 4.5" off my hips) My arthritis pain in my knees is virtually gone I am walking 2 miles a day with ease Almost all my clothes are too big. A bunch I've had to pull to donate because they simply aren't wearable, and the rest are getting close. When we are out of social isolation I'm going to need to do some shopping before going back to the office. In addition, I had my 3 mon…

Any post-ops here who had some weird left chest spasms for a second or two? i’m about 8 weeks post-op and these weird spasms started last sunday. i did check with my pcp and cardiologist and they don’t think it’s cardiac related since it only lasts for a second or two but it happens on and off throughout the day. she mentioned something called esophageal spasms. anyone here ever had that and are you having the same symptom as i do?

  27. felt like uploading a brand new photo. 5 months since I began my weight loss. 3 months since RNY surgery. HW 322 SW 256 CW 190 Feeling good; confident for the first time in my life. I'm still losing but slowly I think I'll get to 180lbs but that's about it then I plan to start a regime of weights and stuff to try build some muscle tone and deal with some belly flab. comments very much appreciated!!!

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew how long the actual stomach takes to heal inside? I think I’m over stressing about leaks etc and I’d like to know roughly when I can stop

  29. Still on all liquids, but I am thinking I'd like to get a really good bariatric cookbook for when I get on solid foods. Suggestions for ones that are good, or warnings for ones that are "don't waste your time". I am a pretty good cook.

  30. I had a massive clump fall out my head and I’m 4/5 months out. Does your hair grow back because I’m soooo close to cutting it off I mean my hair line is like nonexistent and I can see it’s really bad. I’m drinking biotin and have the shampoo and conditioner for it I have been using and taking months before surgery but it won’t stop!! Should I cut it in a bob and wait for it to grow out and will it grow back?!? I want your input cause right now I’m trying not to freak out but I’m half way their with scissors in my hands.

I’m almost a month out from DS surgery and had this horrible metal taste in my mouth the first week after surgery or so but it went away and now it’s back and it’s awful!! My surgeon said it would go away. Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions why this is happening or better yet how to treat it? Bleck!

Hi all, sleeved in March 3, so it's been 3 weeks. I've lost a total of 16lbs. I'm trying to be happy about it, but honestly, I thought it would go quicker. I'm measuring my food, sticking to 2 premier shakes a day, sticking to lean proteins, measuring my 1.5 oz servings. Drinking my water. I lost 9 lbs the first week, 4 lbs the second, and 3 lbs the third week. I'm averaging between 60 and 70 grams of protein and about 600 to 650 calories a day. I think my calories are too high. Suggestions?

  33. Hey guys. I was sleeved on 3/13. I have been doing great and yesterday was advanced to phase 2. I had 2tbsp of greek yogurt for breakfast with 2tbsp of baby oatmeal (yuck). For lunch I had 1 tbsp of cottage cheese mashed and 1 tbsp of pureed peaches which I couldnt stand so didnt eat all of it. For dinner I had 2 tbsp of mashed tuna fish and maybe 1tsp of green beans. I held everything down and felt great. This morning I woke up and feel like someone kicked me in my upper abdomen and I have pain in my right kidney. Ive been drinking about 1 liter of water a day plus the clear fluid. (Yesterday plus the food). I still am able to drink today. Im not having any nausea or upp…

I’m 3 weeks post op gastric bypass and these past couple of days I have been extremely nauseous. Zofran isnt helping not are those nausea patches they gave me. How did you guys treat nausea post op. Before the operation I’d have ginger ale, and saltines. But obviously those aren’t an option now. i only started the purée food diet a week ago and have actually put myself back on the liquid diet until my appt on the 27th because I keep having complications (inability to tolerate most foods (severe cramping, vomiting and diarrhea). But now with this nausea I’m struggling to even get in a protein drink or my daily liquid intake. Yesterday I had 20 oz liquid. It’s Sunday s…

Hey guys, I'm 10 weeks post op and things are going great! Although sometimes I get the feeling I have food sitting in my throat after I've had a couple of bites. It doesn't hurt or make me feel ill it's just uncomfortable.. I've only experienced it a few times (not every time I eat) I spoke to my surgeon and he said its nothing to worry about unless it happens every time I eat. I was just wondering if any one else has experienced this too? It's not happened for about 2 weeks now, so I'm hoping it's not gonna happen again :-)

To the men, big men 300+ (30-40yo) if you had low stamina or libido prior did it change after Major weight loss? Not meaning not interested in it but so unhealthy and unfit you feel you'll have a heart attack during sex But also I guess if men noticed more stamina and libido I thought it's actually a genuine topic? Not trying to be crude Tnx

I'm really struggling! I'll be 2 years post op in July (too much math). I lost 95 lbs. since surgery and 130 lbs. all time. Since the beginning of this year I've had a lot of issues and have gained 18 lbs. It seemed like it happened overnight. I'm the kind of person who needs serious structure. What BASIC diet/meal plan can I follow going forward? I had RNY Gastric Bypass, and am a pescatarian, but I can substitute seafood for anything. ANY help would be very much appreciated. Take care and stay safe, all. ?

  42. Started by Fondra,

I'm only to have 64 oz of h2o, and four 2 oz cups of premier protein shakes for two weeks. Everyone in the house is eating my favorite foods. I have no stomach pains except for gas. I've been taking 3 gas x chewables as a dose to rid me of gas and bloating. I have Crystal light and shakes and fat free popsicles. Did anyone else want to eat food before it was time? I think I drink too much at once last night. My stomach held it, but I don't want to stretch it or burst my staple line.

Nov. 2020 i had the sleeve done. Very happy with my decision. I am a little confused thought, before the surgery i lost 30 pounds, since Nov. I lost another 50 for a total of 80 pounds. But, Only 50 were from the sleeve. My surgeon told me that was it, i wasn't going to lose any more weight. I thought you could lose up to 100 pounds from having the surgery. Why is my surgeon telling me im done after only losing 50 pounds? It has also been about 2, maybe 3 weeks since i have lost any pounds. Can anyone please help me understand this, and why am i not losing weight?

Hey y’all, What did you use for your scars to decrease their appearance and help them heal more? I used scar away for a scar on my cheek in the past but it hasn’t been the best thing. I definitely don’t want noticeable scars when I’m finally able to wear a bikini in a few months! ??

  45. I think I had too much for supper last evening. I had 5 ounces of greek yogurt and about 1/2 hour later I had a protein shake. About 1/2 hour after that my stomach felt too full. It felt hard and distended. That happened to be once before about a week ago and it went away fairly quickly. However I woke up this morning still feeling like my stomach was too full (again hard and distended). I have a call into the doctor but haven't heard back yet. Has anyone ever felt this way?

I had surgery (bypass) on Mar 5. I have steadily lost .8lb each day. I have written down every calorie and every gram of protein. My question is On Thurs I ate 400 calories and 75g of protein walked for 25min. On Fri I copied everything to a tee from the day before except 1 sugar free popcisle at night and my exercise was doubled but I gained 3.8lbs. Anyone explain the abrupt weight gain? Sat I went down 1.5lb (same) food intake but less exercise only 45min. I know alot of ppl stall at 3wks but this wasnt a stall it was a gain....

Umm I don't go online as much because I'm happy and doing things my way... Fired my useless dietitian months ago... I started this diet journey 7 months ago pretty much to the day and I've hit 150LBS lost I cannot even fathom it. I never ever thought I would even get this far or this low but this bypass just seems to keep working for me. I started my journey at high weight of 322lbs and today I weighed in at 172lbs …

  49. I notice a lot of people are on liquids for 2-3 weeks. However my doctor said I should be on liquids for only 1 week, then 1 week of mushy foods then I can start having normal food. Tomorrow marks the one week mark. When do I know I’m ready to transition.

  50. Hello I am 4 weeks post op and my life is hell. I cant even swallow my own spit. I am so nauseous that I wanna cry I have no energy and can’t get the nutrients i need.....is this a part of the process or is this a problem? I so regretting this surgery ????☹️
