I was approved and had the Gastric Sleeve surgery in March 2015.  At my first doctor appointment my weight was 235 lbs. I have genetic high cholesterol, I had high high blood pressure, and was pre-diabetic. I've tried many diets and I am very active (I enjoy working out).  I had a personal trainer for 8 months and I lost 2 lbs (although I was very strong!)  I have severe food allergies (allergic to all vegetables and fruit), verified by an allergist by various skin tests throughout the years.  This left me with carbs and sweets to fill up on.  A nutritionist recommended the sleeve as a way for portion control and weight loss.
The surgery worked exactly as it should have.  I felt 100% better.  I no longer take blood pressure medicine and I am no where near pre-diabetic.  I didn't have any issues with GARD, liquid intake or any other post-op issues as reported.  But....my sugar cravings came back with a vengeance about 8 months out!  My diet consist of all grilled, roasted, baked lean meats. I kept my carb intake to 30g or less per day.  I made the mistake of eating a hard candy whenever my stomach would feel queasy.  Therefore I introduced sugar back into my diet and I've been battling my cravings (sweet and salt) every since.   Entering menopause in 2017 didn't help either.
My lowest weight was 155 lbs in 2018 and I felt great!  I am working my way back to that.  I refuse to take any diet pills.  My surgery works, I just have to eat properly. I am currently on my 2nd journey to lose 10 lbs and maintain a healthy weight.  I am in the process of purging sugar and most carbs from my diet, and I exercise 4 days a week.  Mostly strength training.  I love my current health status, but I know it could be a lot better.
My advice to others:  Follow the bariatric way of eating.  Do not overeat. Pay attention to your stomach. Stop when you've had enough regardless of what is left on your plate. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!  I carry a Yeti stainless steel cup filled with lemon water everywhere I go. I take my vitamins, I drink protein first thing in the morning to start off my day.  With everything I eat, I have high protein and low carbs and fat in mind.  Scour the internet for bariatric or low carb/high protein meals.  They are out there and delicious!  Don't let any weight gain go too far.  That is where I am now in my journey....correcting, losing, and then maintaining a healthy weight.
